ECOWAS Orders Standby Force Deployment to Restore Constitutional Order in Niger Republic

In a decisive move, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced the deployment of its standby force to restore constitutional order in Niger Republic.

The decision was communicated by ECOWAS President Omar Alieu Touray during an extraordinary meeting held in Abuja on Thursday.

The resolution comes in response to the recent coup in Niger Republic, which has resulted in the detention of President Mohamed Bazoum and his family members. Despite efforts to engage in dialogue with the military junta responsible for the coup, all attempts were met with defiance and rejection, prompting ECOWAS to take immediate action.

The resolution, read out by President Omar Alieu Touray, stated, “Direct the committee of the Chief of Defence Staff to activate the ECOWAS stand-by force with all its elements immediately. Order the deployment of the ECOWAS stand-by force to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger. Underscore its continued commitment to the restoration of constitutional order through peaceful means.”

ECOWAS has also called upon the support of the African Union (AU), partner countries, and international institutions to back the resolution. The regional body emphasized its dedication to achieving the restoration of constitutional order in Niger through peaceful means.
