NYSC Confirms Delay in Payment of Increased Corps Members’ Allowance Due to Lack of Funds.

The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, has clarified that the recent approval to increase corps members’ monthly allowance has not been implemented due to insufficient funds. This comes after the Federal Government approved the increment from N33,000 to N77,000, effective from July 2024.

In a statement shared on NYSC’s official Facebook page, the approval for the increase was highlighted in a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, dated September 25, 2024, and signed by its Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta. However, despite the formal announcement, the new allowance was not reflected in corps members’ September payments, leading to concerns among the corps community.

Speaking to the BBC Hausa service, Brigadier General Ahmed explained that while the increment had been officially approved, the scheme was yet to receive the necessary funds for implementation. He further noted that this delay also affects NYSC staff, whose salaries were increased several months ago but have not yet been disbursed.

Ahmed expressed optimism that the funds would soon be made available, enabling the payment of the new allowance. He reassured corps members that their monthly stipends had indeed been increased, as confirmed in a letter dated July 29, 2024, but no timeline for the payment has been provided.

As corps members eagerly await the fulfillment of the promise, the situation remains a point of discussion, with many expressing frustration over the delay in the much-needed financial relief.
