In the early hours of Monday, Nigeria experienced yet another collapse of its electricity grid, marking the sixth such incident in 2024 alone. The collapse occurred at approximately 2:42 am, plunging the nation into another round of power outage woes.

As of 8 am on Monday, ISO data indicated that the grid managed to recover slightly, generating 266.50 megawatts of electricity from Okpai, Geregu, and Ibom power.

Jos DisCo, one of Nigeria’s electricity distribution companies, confirmed the collapse and attributed the widespread power disruptions to the loss of power supply from the national grid.

In a statement, they said, “The current outage being experienced within our franchise States is a result of the loss of power supply from the national grid. This loss occurred in the early hours of Monday, leading to power disruptions across their feeder networks.”

Dr. Friday Adakole Elijah, the head of Corporate Affairs at Jos DisCo, expressed optimism regarding efforts to restore the grid and ensure regular power supply to customers. However, the frequent collapses highlight the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria’s electricity sector, including issues with infrastructure, maintenance, and distribution.

With the nation grappling with recurring grid collapses, stakeholders continue to call for urgent and sustainable solutions to address the persistent electricity supply challenges plaguing Nigeria.
