BREAKING: Cross River Moves NYSC Orientation Camp from Obubra to Akamkpa, Gives Reasons
The Cross River State Government has announced the temporary relocation of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Permanent Orientation Camp from Obubra to the University of Education and Entrepreneurship in Akamkpa to allow for the renovation and upgrading of the existing facility.
The state government said the decision was approved by Governor Bassey Edet Otu to address the deteriorating condition and growing capacity challenges at the Obubra orientation camp.
The announcement was contained in a press statement issued on Thursday, October 15, 2026, by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. A. Owan Enoh.
According to the statement, the Obubra camp, which has served the state for several years, has become overstretched and requires urgent intervention to bring its facilities up to modern standards.
The planned renovation and remodelling are expected to improve the camp’s infrastructure and provide a safer, more comfortable and conducive environment for corps members participating in the mandatory three-week orientation programme.
The government stressed that the relocation was temporary, assuring residents and other stakeholders that the camp would return to Obubra once the renovation and upgrading works were completed.
To ensure a smooth transition, the state government said the temporary facility at the University of Education and Entrepreneurship in Akamkpa had been assessed and found suitable to accommodate corps members during the renovation period.
The statement listed adequate hostel accommodation, reliable water and electricity supplies, a dedicated parade ground and security arrangements among the facilities available at the temporary camp.
The government expressed confidence that these provisions would enable the NYSC to conduct its orientation exercises without disruption.
It also appealed to prospective corps members, their parents and guardians, NYSC officials and other stakeholders to cooperate with the authorities and support the temporary relocation.
The statement reiterated the Otu administration’s commitment to youth development and the continued improvement of facilities supporting the NYSC scheme in Cross River State.
The relocation is expected to provide an opportunity for the state government to address longstanding infrastructure challenges at the Obubra camp while ensuring that orientation activities continue at the temporary venue in Akamkpa.
