Senate President Godswill Akpabio has vowed to push for constitutional amendments to ensure the full implementation of the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy.
He made this commitment during a meeting with members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State who are loyal to Senator John Akpanudoedehe, the former Interim National Secretary of the party.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, Akpabio expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for initiating steps toward local government autonomy. Akpabio assured that under his leadership, the Senate would guarantee the judgment’s full enforcement.
“The Senate, under my leadership, will amend the constitution to guarantee that the judgment is fully implemented, without any loopholes for manipulation,” Akpabio affirmed.

The local government autonomy ruling had long been a subject of debate, with many advocating for financial and administrative independence from state governments.
Reflecting on the political history in Akwa Ibom, Akpabio remarked that before joining the APC, the party had never won even a councillorship position in the state. He recalled how internal conflicts during the 2019 elections prevented the party from seizing opportunities to win key political seats.
Akpabio welcomed back returning APC members, expressing optimism about the future. Party members, represented by Eteubong Alex Umoh, Obong Kufre Akpan, and Mrs. Roseline Eyang, reaffirmed their loyalty, stating that they never left the party despite their leader’s defection.
“We recognize the Senate President as our leader in the state and refused to be used as weapons against the party leadership,” the group noted, expressing satisfaction with their reunion under the APC banner.
