Kano Assembly in Mourning as Two Lawmakers Die in One Day
The Kano State House of Assembly has been thrown into deep mourning following the death of two serving lawmakers within hours on the same day. The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday and has unsettled lawmakers, government officials, and residents across the state.
Ejes Gist News reports that the deceased legislators are Aminu Ungogo, who represented Ungogo Constituency, and Aliyu Sarkin Daneji, popularly known as Sarki Daneji. Both men were active members of the Assembly at the time of their deaths.
Aminu Ungogo Dies Inside Assembly Complex
Aminu Ungogo was the first lawmaker to pass away. He served as Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, one of the most strategic committees in the Kano State House of Assembly.

Reports indicate that Ungogo died inside the Assembly complex after a brief illness while carrying out his official duties. His death occurred during working hours, triggering shock and emotional reactions within the legislative chamber.

The development was officially confirmed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Speaker’s spokesperson, Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai.
“The late Hon. Ungogo died while in active duty at the Kano State House of Assembly. He is survived by his wife and children,” the statement said.
Lawmakers Describe Ungogo as Dedicated Public Servant
The sudden death of Ungogo drew emotional reactions from lawmakers and Assembly staff, many of whom described him as calm, disciplined, and deeply committed to legislative duties.
Colleagues said the lawmaker remained fully engaged in Assembly activities until his final moments and was actively involved in committee work and plenary responsibilities.
Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Jibril Falgore, expressed deep sorrow over the loss. He condoled with the family of the deceased, his constituents, and members of the Assembly.
“Hon. Ungogo’s death comes at a critical time when Kano citizens needed him most,” the Speaker said.
Ungogo was scheduled to be buried later on Wednesday at about 6:00pm in his hometown, in accordance with Islamic rites.
Second Lawmaker, Sarki Daneji, Dies Hours Later
Barely hours after Ungogo’s death, the Assembly was struck by another tragedy with the passing of Aliyu Sarkin Daneji. His death further deepened the grief within the House, making the day one of the darkest in the history of the Kano State legislature.
Details surrounding the circumstances of Sarki Daneji’s death were not immediately made public as of Wednesday evening.
Plenary Activities Disrupted Amid Mourning
Following the second death, plenary activities were disrupted as lawmakers were seen in a sober and emotional mood. Several members described the loss of two colleagues in a single day as shocking and emotionally overwhelming.
The leadership of the Kano State House of Assembly is expected to formally announce mourning arrangements and possible suspension of legislative activities in honour of the late lawmakers.
