  • 20 Students Confirmed Dead in Boarding Schools as Meningitis Hits Nigeria

    A suspected outbreak of meningitis has tragically claimed the lives of at least 20 students in boarding public schools situated in Potiskum, Fika, and Fune local government areas of Yobe State.

     

    The fatalities were reported from Government Science Technical College, Government Girls Science Technical College, and Federal Government Girls College, all located in Potiskum LG.

    According to a source in the town, a minimum of 20 students succumbed to the outbreak, with most of the affected students admitted to the Specialist Hospital in Potiskum, where they are reportedly responding positively to treatment.

     

    Confirming the outbreak, Dr. Muhammad Sani Idris, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, disclosed that the disease suspected to be meningitis resulted in the death of 20 students. Governor Mai Mala Buni has directed the state Ministry of Education to temporarily relocate to Potiskum in response to the outbreak.

     

    The commissioner further confirmed the admission of several students to Potiskum Specialist Hospital and detailed the proactive measures being taken to curb the spread. Ambulances have been stationed in schools for emergency cases, and teachers are conducting regular health checks on unaffected students.

     

    Dr. Idris expressed the gravity of the situation, stating that 17 students died in two secondary schools belonging to the Yobe state government, with an additional fatality reported from the Federal Government Girls College. The affected areas have been identified, and the Ministry of Health has dispatched a medical team to investigate the cause of the outbreak and provide necessary medical interventions.

    Dr. Idris underscored the commitment to students’ well-being, emphasizing the establishment of temporary isolation centres within schools to deliver first aid treatment. The Commissioner and relevant officials have temporarily relocated to Potiskum to oversee the situation until all students are in good health.

     

    The Yobe state government is taking swift and comprehensive measures to combat the outbreak and ensure the safety and health of students across affected regions.

    Former pastor of the Omega Fire Ministries, Mike Davids, who had accused the General Overseer of the church, Apostle Johnson Suleman, of sleeping with his wife, has threatened to expose the “truth” behind the Stephanie Otobo’s s£x scandal.

    Recall that between 2017 and 2018, Canada-based singer Stephanie Otobo accused Apostle Suleman of impregnating her and breaching a promise to marry her.

     

    The accusation dragged on with Festus Keyamo standing as Stephanie’s lawyer.

     

    However, months later, Stephanie made a U-turn and confessed at the Omega Fire Ministries that she was paid by “strong” politicians and pastors to accuse Suleman.

     

    “They paid me a lot of money,” she said, crying in the video posted to the church’s Facebook account.

     

    Well, Davids who recently accused Suleman of sleeping with his wife, Faith Edeko, who currently heads an Abuja branch of the church, has said in a new video that he and Apostle Suleman both know how they got Otobo to come to the church in Auchi, and apologise over the scandal and how they persuaded her mother too.

     

    Davids said: “I left the church (Omega Fire Ministries) of my freewill. You were never the one who sent me out of that ministry. I was tired of your ungodliness as a leader. And that was the major reason I left that ministry. So, forget those manipulations and cheap lies.

     

    “We all know the part I played in the Stephanie Otobo saga. You know as much as I do. How much involved I was in bringing that saga to a halt. I don’t even need to mention names. You knew how we got Stephanie Otobo to come to the altar and apologise to mama (Suleman’s wife) and brought Stephanie Otobo’s mother to Auchi.

     

    “I am coming to that issue because you are pushing me to that extent, Apostle Johnson Suleman as much as I knew what happened. Thirdly, I am also aware that my account has been frozen. You have also released policemen to get me arrested.

     

    “You have 48 hours to ask those who are blocking my account to unblock it. You will not like what is going to follow.”

    Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, has said he needs “miracles” to get his injured players back in time to boost their quadruple bid.

    The Reds defied a host of injuries to beat Chelsea 1-0 in the Carabao Cup final last weekend.

    But they lost midfielder Ryan Gravenberch in the first half of that game, adding to their mounting fitness crisis.

    Gravenberch will miss at least two matches, starting with Wednesday’s FA Cup fifth round tie against Southampton at Anfield.

    Wataru Endo is also a doubt for the visit of the Championship promotion chasers, as he was spotted leaving Wembley on crutches and wearing a protective boot.

    That leaves Klopp without 13 first team players, including Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai.

    “We need miracles with a few players. I don’t want to rule them out for too long,” Klopp told reporters on Tuesday.

    “But it is touch and go with a lot of players who were not available for the final: Darwin, Mo, Dom – we have to see what they can do (on Tuesday).

    “In an ideal world you’d think about this kind of thing, but we obviously don’t live in an ideal world so we will see when the players arrive and they get checked.”

  • Two Bureau De Change Operators Jailed In Kano

    Two illegal Bureau-de-Change operators identified as Munkaila Sani and Mohammed Sani, have been sentenced to one-year imprisonment by Justice Mohammed Nasir Yunusa of the Federal High Court in Kano, for operating BDC without licence.

    The Economic Financial Crimes Commission made this known in a post shared on its X handle on Tuesday, February 27. According to the EFCC, upon arraignment, the convicts pleaded guilty to one-count charge for engaging in financial operations of Bureau De Change without license.  

    ‘’The convicts: Munkaila Sani and Mohammed Sani were jailed after pleading guilty to one-count separate charge bordering on engaging in financial operations of bureau de change without a requisite licence, upon their arraignment by the Kano Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,  EFCC”.

    The lone-count charge reads ‘’ That you Munkaila Sani sometime in February 2024 in Kano within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did engage in a financial operation of bureau de change without a valid licence and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 57 (5) of the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act, 2020 and punishable under Section 57 (5) (B) of the same act.’

    Upon arraignment, the defendants pleaded guilty to their respective charges when they were read to them. Based on their pleas, prosecution counsel,  Aisha Tahar Habib prayed the court to convict and sentence them accordingly.

    Counsel to the defendants,  Abdulrahman Isah pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy as the suspects are elderly and have become remorseful for their actions. Consequently, Justice Yunusa convicted and sentenced the defendants to one-year imprisonment each.

    The convicts began their journey to the Correctional Centre when they were arrested by operatives of the Commission around Wapa BDC market and Grand Central Hotel, Kano, following reliable intelligence about their involvement in a syndicate operating bureau de change businesses without an appropriate licence

    Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, has said he needs “miracles” to get his injured players back in time to boost their quadruple bid.

    The Reds defied a host of injuries to beat Chelsea 1-0 in the Carabao Cup final last weekend.

    But they lost midfielder Ryan Gravenberch in the first half of that game, adding to their mounting fitness crisis.

    Gravenberch will miss at least two matches, starting with Wednesday’s FA Cup fifth round tie against Southampton at Anfield.

    Wataru Endo is also a doubt for the visit of the Championship promotion chasers, as he was spotted leaving Wembley on crutches and wearing a protective boot.

    That leaves Klopp without 13 first team players, including Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai.

    “We need miracles with a few players. I don’t want to rule them out for too long,” Klopp told reporters on Tuesday.

    “But it is touch and go with a lot of players who were not available for the final: Darwin, Mo, Dom – we have to see what they can do (on Tuesday).

    “In an ideal world you’d think about these kinds of things, but we obviously don’t live in an ideal world so we will see when the players arrive and they get checked.”

  • 29-Year-Old Man Arrested For Killing His Father With Pestle In Plateau

    A 29-year-old man, Joseph Yakubu, has been arrested by the Plateau State Police Command over the alleged murder of his father, Yakubu Dalyop, with a pestle.

    The unfortunate incident occurred in the Anglo-Jos community, Jos South Local Government Area of the state.  

    Yakubu was among other suspects paraded for various offences by the state Commissioner of Police, CP Hassan Yabanet, at the command’s headquarters in Jos on Tuesday, February 27, 2024.

    According to the CP, the suspect picked a pestle and hit his father during a minor misunderstanding.

    “On 20/02/2024 at about 6pm, information was received at the Anglo-Jos division by a good Samaritan that on 15/02/2024 at about 8pm, one Joseph Yakubu, male, 29yrs of Kambel Anglo-Jos had a minor misunderstanding with his father, one Yakubu Dalyop aged 49yrs,” the police boss stated.

    “As a result, the son took a pounding pestle and hit the father on the head. The father became unconscious and was rushed to the Plateau State Specialist Hospital for medical attention

    “Unfortunately, he died on 19/02/2024 at about 1pm while receiving treatment. The suspect has been arrested while the corpse was deposited at the same hospital mortuary.”

    Yabanet said the case was still under investigation and the suspect would be charged in court upon conclusion of the investigation.

    The commissioner said after studying the security situation in the state, he had designed a new operational template for the command which would flush out criminals from their nests across the state.

    He said the application of the new operational strategies within a few weeks in office had started yielding positive results with the arrest of criminals paraded for criminal conspiracy, trespass, disturbance of public peace, kidnapping, and culpable homicide.

    He assured the people of adequate protection of their lives and property while soliciting their support and cooperation to achieve the objective.

    A kidnap kingpin, who has been on the wanted list of the Command for a long time, Samaila Wakili Fafa A.K.A Habu Ibrahim, has been arrested by the FCT Police Command.

    Wakili was arrested on February 24, at about 7:05 PM, in a continued effort against banditry in FCT and its environs

    The suspect is said to be one of the two kidnappers the Honorable Minister FCT placed a bounty on, as the other one namely Saidu Abdulkadir A.K.A Dahiru Adamu, had earlier been arrested by the Command.

    When interrogated, the suspect confessed that his syndicate masterminded and executed several kidnappings in FCT and its environs, including the abduction of Barr. Chris Agidy, the legal aid to Senator. Ned Nwoko and Mr Sunday Yahaya Zakwai, the district head of Ketti Village were later killed by them.

    Samaila Wakili further led police operatives to where the remains of Barr. Chris Agidy is. The remains were recovered and deposited in Gwagwalada General Hospital.

    Confirming the arrest to newsmen, the spokesperson of the command, SP Josephine Adeh, said while an investigation is still ongoing, the Commissioner of Police FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, reiterates his unflinching commitment to combat crime and criminality in all its manifestations and to ensure safety of residents.

  • Ned Nwoko’s Abducted Aide, Barrister Chris Agidy Killed, Police Recover Body

    Barrister Chris Agidy, the Senior Legislative Aide, SLA, to the lawmaker representing Delta North, Senator Ned Nwoko, who was kidnapped by bandits in 2023, has been killed.

    The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed this to DAILY POST on Tuesday.

    Recall that at least 19 persons were in November 2023 kidnapped from their homes in the Galadimawa area of the nation’s capital by gunmen.

    A report earlier emerged that 12 of the abductees were killed.

    However, the identities of the deceased was not clear as the lawmaker and the security operatives continued efforts to rescue the lawyer.

    Confirming the killing on Tuesday, the FCT PPRO said the lawmaker’s aide was killed by one of the wanted notorious kidnappers terrorizing the country’s capital city, Samaila Wakili.

    Wakili was arrested on February 24 at the Sardauna Forest, in the Toto area of Nasarawa State, by police operatives.

    The FCT PPRO said the suspect, upon his arrest, “led police operatives to where the remains of Barr. Chris Agidy is”.

    She noted that “the remains was recovered and deposited in Gwagwalada General Hospital”.
