Ibadan Explosion: Makinde Signs Executive Order On Safe Handling Of Harmful Substances In Oyo

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has signed Executive Order 001 of 2024 on the safe handling of harmful substances in the state.

Makinde signed the executive order on Wednesday.

Ejes Gist News reports that the signing of the order is coming two weeks after some explosives exploded in Ibadan.

The incident occurred at Dejo Oyelese Close, Bodija Housing Estate, in Ibadan. https://dailypost.ng/2024/01/16/confusion-as-explosion-rocks-ibadan-video/

The governor, while speaking during the signing, said that the order was signed to ensure the safe handling and storage of harmful substances within the state.

He declared that there is now a law in place to guide the handling of harmful substances in the state.

He added that the state government is taking all necessary action to prevent a recurrence of the January 16 explosion in the state.

He said the structural integrity tests on buildings around the site had been concluded.

Makinde said, “We have scheduled an expanded meeting for Tuesday. After that meeting, we should be in a position to lay out what next step we are going to take to launch out.

“If you store gas in a way that is irresponsible and can make heat trigger an explosion, it becomes harmful and would have the same dangerous consequences that are negative to human existence.

“So, what this order has done is to say that the government, not being superhuman, cannot know what people have stored in their respective homes. And it is to say, any company or individual that has harmful substances stored in residential houses should notify the state government.

“Going forward, anybody who has harmful substances in Oyo State, it does not matter if you have a licence to hold it, you have a duty to notify the Special Adviser to the governor so that we are sure you are not endangering the lives of other people around you. And this will be on until the governor revokes the Executive Order.”

Who is Urum Kalu Eke, the South-East nominee who rejected Tinubu’s appointment?

Urum Kalu Eke: South-East Nominee Rejects Tinubu’s Appointment.

Urum Kalu Eke, a nominee for membership of the Central Bank of Nigeria Board of Directors, has declined the offer, stating that he is currently engaged with the World Bank.

This revelation came to light during the Thursday plenary when the Senate initiated the confirmation process for the nominees.

On February 13, President Bola Tinubu submitted the names of Urum and four others for confirmation as members of the CBN board.

However, during the confirmation process, former Governor of Abia State, Senator Orji Kalu (APC, Abia North), informed the Senate that the nominee, who is his constituent, had called him to reject the offer, citing a conflict with his current role as a consultant with the World Bank.

Kalu stated, “The nominee told me this role would conflict with his job as a consultant to the World Bank, Federal Government agencies, and other private companies.”

Meanwhile, the Senate has confirmed the appointment of four other members to the CBN Board of Directors as forwarded by the President.

Those confirmed by the Senate on Thursday as Directors are Robert Agbede, Ado Yakubu Wanka, Professor Murtala Sabo Sagagi, and Mrs. Muslimat Olanike Aliyu.

The confirmation followed the consideration of a report on the nominee screening presented by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance & Other Financial Institutions, Senator Adetokunbo Abiru (APC, Lagos East).

Abiru stated, “That the Senate do receive and consider the report on the confirmation of the nomination of the following Five (5) persons as members of the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of Nigeria in accordance with section 6(1), (2) (d), and 10 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.”

According to him, the Committee did not clear Urum Kalu Eke from Abia because he failed to appear before the Committee for screening.
