Paris Considers Triple Parking Fees for SUV | Nigeria News

Paris Takes Aim At SUVs With Premium Parking Vote

In a bid to tackle environmental concerns and curb the pollution impact of SUVs, Paris is contemplating a substantial increase in parking fees for these vehicles.

The proposal, subject to a Sunday referendum, aims to triple the cost for parking hefty vehicles in the city, sparking both support and opposition among residents.

Mayor Anne Hidalgo, advocating for the move, highlights the higher pollution output and increased threat to pedestrians posed by tall, heavy SUVs. This initiative aligns with the city’s previous steps to pedestrianize streets and enhance cycling infrastructure, emphasizing the need for sustainable urban mobility.

Environmental group WWF has criticized SUVs as an “aberration,” citing their 15 percent higher fuel consumption compared to classic coupes and elevated manufacturing costs. Hidalgo contends that SUVs not only contribute more to pollution but also monopolize road space and parking areas, leading to congestion.

The proposed plan would impose an 18-euro ($19.60) charge for non-Parisians’ internal combustion or hybrid vehicles weighing over 1.6 tonnes (two tonnes for electrics) to park in the city center for an hour, with reduced fees further away. Exemptions would apply to Parisians, taxi drivers, tradespeople, health workers, and the disabled.

Critics argue that the classification of “SUV” lacks precision, potentially excluding compact SUVs while affecting family-sized coupes and estate cars. Opposition figures accuse the city government of manipulating the referendum’s targeting, while some suggest a more nuanced approach based on the type of vehicle and its environmental impact.

Despite Paris’s efforts to showcase its environmental initiatives, including hosting the 2024 Olympics, drivers’ groups express discontent. Concerns are raised about the potential impact on daily life, with calls for a more balanced strategy that distinguishes between internal combustion and hybrid or electric vehicles.

As Paris contemplates these measures, the anti-SUV sentiment resonates beyond the city, with Lyon’s Green party mayor planning a similar three-tier parking fee system. The outcome of this referendum will be eagerly awaited, reflecting the ongoing tension between environmental objectives and practical considerations for motorists.

We Dread Setting Foot In Our Farms Again Over Bandit Attacks – Residents Of Plateau Community, Mangu Cry Out (Video)

In the conflict-affected communities of Mangu Local Government Area in Plateau State, residents have reported a suspension of their farming activities. This pause is attributed to their fear of potential attacks by herders, preventing them from accessing their farm areas.

The residents made this known in a short documentary uploaded online by AIT News and seen by SaharaReporters

They lamented that the recent crisis has hampered food production in the communities.

A resident, Laura Yohanna said feeding has become difficult for the dwellers of these communities who are majorly farmers.

She said, “We don’t have any place to go and farm again, we cannot go to our farms. If we go to our farms, they (herders) will start chasing us with machetes, and we cannot do anything.

“We wish to also call for immediate modalities to compensate communities whose properties and farmlands were destroyed, thereby creating huge implications for food security and scarcity in the coming days. This is because the communities are one of the largest farming communities in Plateau State and Nigeria at large,”

    another man, Chris Iyama said.

The Nigerian Army earlier said the major cause of the ongoing religious crisis in Mangu communities was rooted in cattle rustling.

This was stated by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, at the army’s bi-weekly media briefing with newsmen.

He stated that the Mangu crisis was caused by cattle rustling and the killing of a Wagungun man who was riding his motorbike when he suddenly collided with cattle on January 22, 2024, and an argument between the herders and the Wangagu man resulted in his death.

Six days ago, SaharaReporters reported how scores of people were killed during a clash between soldiers and gunmen in Mangu.

It was learnt that no fewer than 30 gunmen were killed while some soldiers sustained injuries during the clash a few hours after Governor Caleb Mutfwang relaxed the 24-hour curfew imposed on the area.

How FG Can Increase Awareness On Data Protection – Expert | Nigeria News

ICT Expert Urges Targeted Awareness Campaigns for Data Protection Education

Mr Jide Awe, an ICT expert and Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Policy Advisor, has advised the Federal Government to conduct focused awareness campaigns to enhance education on data protection. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday, Awe emphasized the importance of raising awareness, especially during the National Data Privacy Week observed from Jan. 28 to Feb. 4.

Data Protection Bill signed into law by Bola Tinubu

Organized by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) under the theme “Take Control of Your Data,” the National Privacy Week aligns with Global Privacy Day on Jan. 28, aiming to promote awareness about data privacy.

Awe highlighted that Nigeria’s data privacy ecosystem is still emerging, making it essential to concentrate on promoting data protection for long-term compliance rather than revenue generation. He emphasized that many individuals are not aware of their right to access and control personal information, exposing them to potential risks associated with data breaches and misuse.

How To Pay For Facebook Ads In Nigeria: A Comprehensive Guide

Referring to the Nigeria Data Protection Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (NDP-SRAP) 2023-2027, Awe suggested a multifaceted approach, with targeted awareness campaigns tailored to different groups based on their specific risks and needs. This approach should consider vulnerabilities and accessibility for impactful campaigns, including specialized approaches for children, the elderly, students, workers, organizations, and those in rural areas.

Awe proposed the integration of data privacy literacy into the school system and promoting career opportunities related to data protection to enhance awareness within the education system. He also recommended citizen engagement through workshops, the development of data protection skills, and the offering of free or subsidized programs for broader participation.

Highlighting the need for diverse communication channels, Awe suggested utilizing physical materials, online resources, social media, traditional media, and local languages as appropriate. He emphasized the importance of promoting a privacy-by-design culture and the necessity for behavioral and attitudinal shifts, while encouraging increased collaboration with the NDPC.

Awe concluded by underlining the fundamental role of the data privacy ecosystem in fostering trust, innovation, and sustainable growth in the digital era. He highlighted that the enactment of the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 positions the country as an innovative 21st-century digital economy, benefiting both individuals and organizations by addressing concerns about data breaches, misuse, and lack of control.

In a plea for leniency, Omoseyin’s defense counsel, Afuye Adegbola, emphasized her being a first-time offender, a mother of one, and expressed her remorse. The judge, Mr. Aneke, sentenced her to six months’ imprisonment or a N300,000 fine, effective from Thursday.

Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin was arrested by ICPC operatives along Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, and the viral video showed her flaunting the new Naira notes.

She claimed to have received the money from her fans at the party and asserted that she did not know the individuals who gave her the cash. Items recovered at the point of arrest included a Range Rover.

Despite legal provisions against such actions, the act of spraying Naira notes at social events remains prevalent in Nigeria. Enforcement by relevant security agencies is sporadic, allowing some high-profile incidents to go unaddressed.

Ejes Gist News understands that the case of Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin serves as a reminder of the legal consequences attached to tampering with Naira notes.

DSS Sends Warning To Electorates Ahead Of Saturday Bye-elections

In anticipation of the upcoming by-elections set for Saturday across 26 states in Nigeria, the Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a stern warning, imploring electorates, political parties, and the media to prioritize peace and adherence to electoral regulations.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will oversee the elections aimed at filling vacant political seats in a majority of the country’s states. States such as Ebonyi, Yobe, Kebbi, Lagos, and Ondo, among others, are among those where citizens will cast their votes.

In a statement released on Friday, the DSS emphasized the significance of maintaining a peaceful environment during the electoral process. It called upon voters and political parties to abstain from activities that could potentially disrupt law and order.

“The service wishes to call on the electorate and participating political parties in the 3rd February 2024 re-run and bye-elections to be of good conduct during and after the exercises in the affected states. In this regard, the Service tasks the contending parties to shun all acts capable of causing a breakdown of law and order,” the statement read.

Furthermore, the DSS underscored its commitment to collaborating with INEC and other security agencies to ensure a smooth and secure electoral exercise. The agency urged the media, civil organizations, and public commentators to refrain from divisive actions and spreading false narratives that could jeopardize the nation’s peace.

“It is inarguable that it is only if there is a livable country that individuals, groups, or corporate bodies can pursue and realize their legitimate businesses and ambitions,” the statement added.

2027: ‘You’ll Be 81 Years’ – Bode George Advises Atiku To Shelve Ambition

Former Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Deputy National Chairman, Chief Olabode George, has appealed to ex-Vice President, Atiku Abubakar to shelve his 2027 presidential ambition.

George, while appearing on Arise Television on Thursday, further appealed to the former Vice President to allow younger Nigerians run.

He pointed out that Atiku, who was the standard bearer of the PDP in the last two presidential elections, would be 81 years old in 2027, and he would be too old at the time to govern the country.

“My brother Atiku Abubakar was 77 years old last year, and by 2027 he will be 81 years old. Atiku should give room for younger Nigerians, who still have the energy and the brain to develop the country,” he said.

“Atiku should be in a situation where he plays like the big uncle in the room or the elder in the room.

“What would anybody carry me now to do because I’m heading to 80 years old and I want to go and be a minister? To do what?

“Let’s mentor the younger generation, and let’s be consistent with our strong belief in our party norms.”

Bandit Ransom Condemned: Nigeria Police Declare Crowdfunding as Criminal

Nigeria Police Force Condemns Crowdfunding for Ransom as Banditry Continues to Plague the Nation

In a stern condemnation, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has expressed its disapproval of the rising trend of crowdfunding to secure the release of abducted individuals, citing the detrimental impact on the morale of its operatives. The Nigeria police Force Spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, made these remarks during an interview with Channels Television on Thursday.

Adejobi emphasized the challenges faced by law enforcement, revealing that families of abducted victims often refrain from involving the police due to the explicit threats issued by kidnappers. He argued that the act of raising ransom through crowdfunding not only poses legal issues but also inadvertently supports and fuels the thriving kidnapping business.

“Paying ransom is criminal in Nigeria, according to the provisions of our law,” Adejobi declared. He pointed out a critical issue where families, manipulated by the kidnappers’ threats, choose not to inform security agencies, allowing the criminal enterprise to persist without interference.

The Nigeria Police force spokesperson recounted a disturbing incident where an individual resorted to crowdfunding on social media to gather funds for the release of victims. He strongly condemned this approach, stating, “It is criminal. Crowdfunding is not allowed. How can you come on social media and tell people to gather money to rescue victims? It kills our morale.”

This condemnation comes in the wake of a tragic incident on January 2, where bandits abducted a father and his six daughters from their residence in Zuma 1, Bwari area of Abuja. After two weeks in captivity, the bandits ruthlessly killed one of the girls, Nabeeha, due to the family’s inability to meet the initial ransom demand. The kidnappers reportedly increased the ransom to N100 million, threatening further harm if the money was not paid.

In a distressing turn of events, the bank details for the ransom were shared on various social media platforms, highlighting the desperate measures taken by families in an attempt to secure the release of their loved ones.

Fortunately, after enduring 18 days in captivity, the remaining five girls were freed on January 21.
