Geometric Power plant inaugurated as Aba makes history today

President Bola Tinubu will today officially open the first integrated power plant in Nigeria, the Geometric Power Plant, located in the Osisioma Industrial area of Aba. Aba is the commercial centre of Abia State.

In preparation for the commissioning of the Power plant, Turbine 3 was turned on at 3.39pm on Sunday, February 25, 2024, leading to massive rejoicing by Geometric Power engineers and their KS Energy counterparts.

The 181-megawatt Geometric Power plant was originally scheduled for inauguration on Saturday, February 24, by President Bola Tinubu.

Aba Power Limited Electric, the newest electricity distribution company (DISCO), in Nigeria, will take electricity from the new plant and supply to 9 of the 17 Local Government Areas of Abia State.

Described as the biggest investment in the South-East Zone of Nigeria, Geometric Power has spent about $800 million on its integrated power project, which includes building of 27-kilometre natural gas pipeline, from Owaza in Ukwa West LGA in Abia State, to the Osisioma Industrial Layout in Aba.

“We have, in addition, installed 150,000 kilometres of cables and wires and installed four new power substations, as well as refurbished three others inherited from the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN”, explained Ben Caven, managing director, Geometric Power Ltd.

The Geometric Power Group was founded by Bart Nnaji, a professor and former minister of Power.

Nnaji, embarked on the integrated project after James Wolfensohn, a former World Bank President and then Nigeria’s Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala visted Aba, on March 17, 2004, and discovered that the greatest challenge facing both large-scale and medium-scale industrialists in Aba, reputed to be the centre of indigenous manufacturing in Nigeria, is epileptic power supply.

Both Wolfensohn and Okonjo-Iweala appealed to Nnaji to assist with a power plant dedicated to Aba, following the 22MW Abuja Emergency Power Plant he led a team of Nigerian engineers to build in Abuja, from 2000 to 2001 that supplied uninterrupted power to critical places, like the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Company, the Central Bank headquarters, the Aso Rock and the entire Central Business District of Abuja.

Patrick Umeh, a former executive with the Los Angeles Water and Light in the United States, who later served as commissioner in-charge of Markets, Market Rates and Competition, at the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), described the tubular poles mounted by Geometric Power in Aba and the environs, as incomparable in Africa.

“Only in cities like Tokyo and San Francisco in California you have facilities of this quality and sizes.

“Much as they are tall, as all of us can see, the tubular poles here are actually about 10 meters deep.

“In other words, in the unlikely event of a natural disaster, like earthquake in Aba or the environs, Aba Power and the Geometric Group will still be able to supply electricity to its numerous customers”.

‘Electricity was rarely available in Aba and when it was available it was so poor that it couldn’t power your household appliances, let alone industrial machines,” Alphonsus Udeigbo, president general, Aba Landlords Protection and Development Association (ALPANDA) said.

For Andy Ubah Obasi, a former president, Aba Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ACCIMA), takeover of Aba, by Geometric Power Limited, will incite industrialisation in the entire South-East region and Nigeria at large.
According to him, “The feeling of the business community is that this is long overdue. Most people know how useful and beneficial power is to industrialisation. Geometric has always been there for the past 16 -years and the business community has being anxiously waiting for this and we are glad that it has finally arrived”.

The inauguartion of the Geometric Power plant, will mark a new dawn in the country, not just in Aba or Abia State, according to Alexander Maduakor, president, Association of Aba Industrialists.

“We are proud of the support the Federal Government has of late been giving to the Geometric Power Limited, the only group in Nigeria that will generate and distribute its own power.

Federal Government Holds Summit with NLC, TUC to Address Protest Plans

The Federal Government is currently in talks with the leadership of Organised Labour concerning the scheduled nationwide protest set for Tuesday and Wednesday.

As reported by Television Continental (TVC), the meeting involves the government, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and is taking place in Abuja.

Recall that Joe Ajaero, the National President of NLC, had announced a two-day nationwide mass protest to address the ongoing hardship faced by Nigerians.

However, the TUC decided not to participate in the two-day nationwide protest, citing the failure of the NLC to involve the union before making the announcement.

Furthermore, a total of 65 Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) under the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations Forum have withdrawn from the planned nationwide protest.

It’s worth noting that the leaders of organised labour and government representatives reached a Memorandum of Understanding on October 2, 2023, after a 16-point agreement was made.

The agreement aimed at addressing the public’s suffering due to fuel subsidy removal and finding lasting solutions to issues such as the devaluation of the naira, inflation, and insecurity.

  • Protest’ll Hold As Planned – NLC President Ajaero

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC has said it is going ahead with its planned protest.

The protest will hold on Tuesday and Wednesday over “mounting hunger and insecurity” in Nigeria.

NLC President Joe Ajaero disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

Ajaero accused the Federal Government of allegedly trying to use an amorphous group, the Nigeria Civil Society Forum, NCSF, to attack its members during the rallies.

He vowed to ensure a total shutdown of Nigeria through the withdrawal of services by workers if any of its members were attacked during the protest.

Recall that the Department of State Services, DSS, has warned that the planned protest may be hijacked by “some elements.”

This was as the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, warned that embarking on the rallies would be contempt of court.

However, the NLC statement reads: “We would want to inform Nigerians that the State has perfected plans to attack our peaceful rallies across the country.

“One of the groups being primed to attack our peaceful rallies goes by a nebulous name, Nigeria Civil Society Forum (NCSF).

“NCSF is one of the emergency groups put together, funded, promoted and remote-controlled by the government to cause violence against our members for electing to peacefully protest against hunger in the land.

“We, however, remain resolute, determined and prepared to express our pain and grief in a peaceful manner as Nigerians come 27th and 28th of February 2024.”

Reports obtained by Ejes Gist News reveal that armed individuals stormed a mosque located in Eastern Burkina Faso on Sunday, killing dozens of people.

According to AFP, security sources in the region confirmed the attack, stating, “Armed individuals attacked a mosque in Natiaboani on Sunday around 5:00 am, resulting in several dozen being killed.”

“A local resident also said, ‘The victims were all Muslims, most of them men who had come for the morning prayer.’”

The village of Essakane was specifically targeted by the assailants, resulting in the death of 12 individuals at the scene. Furthermore, three others unfortunately passed away while receiving medical treatment for their injuries, and two individuals reportedly sustained varying degrees of injury during the assault.

In addition to the mosque incident, reports reveal that the gunmen also attacked a community as they gathered for prayers in the northern village of Essakane.

Al Jazeera quoted a church official saying that at least 15 Catholic worshippers were killed in a Burkina Faso village when the gunmen attacked.

The vicar-general of the Catholic Diocese of Dori, Abbot Jean-Pierre Sawadogo, released a statement confirming that the tragic incident in the village of Essakane on Sunday was indeed a “terrorist attack.”

The attack resulted in the death of 12 individuals at the scene, while three others succumbed to their injuries during treatment. Additionally, two individuals were wounded in the assault.

At present, no group has claimed responsibility for the shooting, Ejes Gist News understands.

“In this painful circumstance, we invite you to pray for the rest in God for those who have died in faith, for the healing of the wounded, and for the conversion of those who continue to sow death and desolation in our country,” Sawadogo said in a statement.

The shooting incident occurred in a region where various armed groups have carried out multiple attacks, some targeting Christian churches, while others involved the abduction of clergy.

Approximately half of Burkina Faso remains beyond government control due to years of devastation caused by armed groups.

These fighters have caused the deaths of thousands and displaced over two million people, posing a significant threat to the nation’s stability, which has already experienced two coups in 2022.

The military rulers of the country have faced challenges in restoring peace in areas plagued by violence since the initial coup in January 2022. The number of casualties from attacks by armed groups has nearly tripled compared to the previous 18 months, as reported by the Africa Center for Strategic Studies in August 2023.

Furthermore, the security situation has been exacerbated by the country’s porous borders with Mali and Niger, both of which are also under military rule and grappling with security crises, Ejes Gist News reports.

A coalition of bakers from across the nation has come together to voice their objection to the impending nationwide strike organized by a faction within their ranks.

According to Ejes Gist News, the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria declared on February 14 its intention to commence a nationwide strike on February 27 unless the Federal Government honours the agreement reached with the association in 2020.

In addition to this, the association advocated for the creation of a price control and monitoring committee, sanctioned by the amended constitution, and other measures aimed at improving the business environment in the country.

However, issuing a statement on Monday, certain bakers, represented by the Supreme Bakers and Confectioners Association of Nigeria, criticized the decision to go on strike during this challenging period for Nigerians, deeming it unnecessary and potentially exacerbating the situation.

The acting National President of the association, Edmund Egbuji, urged all members of the group to refrain from participating in the strike.

The statement read, “The BOT chairman and the entire members of the board of trustees, in conjunction with the national exco of Supreme Bakers and Confectioners Association of Nigeria, wish to bring to the notice of the general public that Supreme Bakers Association will not embark on a nationwide withdrawal of services (strike) proposed by some bakers association in the country.

Supreme bakers deem it as unpatriotic at this time of food insecurity and scarcity in the country. Going on strike will never be an option; instead, the government, through its relevant ministries, should call for a roundtable discussion to cushion the effects of the food scarcity plight.

Tensions Rise as Police Seal Labour Union Ahead of Planned Nationwide Protest Over Economic Hardship

In a move sparking controversy, the Nigeria Police have sealed off the Labour Union office in Lagos, a preemptive measure to thwart the planned nationwide protest scheduled by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) against what they claim are the economic hardships caused by President Bola Tinubu’s policies.

Poor economy: We don’t have all the Solutions —Tinubu

Ejes Gist News has learned that the NLC had designated February 27 and 28 for the protest, aiming to draw attention to the severe economic challenges faced by Nigerians under Tinubu’s administration. The contentious decision to seal off the NLC office raises concerns about freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly.

Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, President Tinubu’s economic policies have come under intense scrutiny. Nigeria’s economy has experienced a dramatic collapse, marked by the Nigerian currency plummeting from ₦450 per dollar to an alarming ₦1710 to the USD. This staggering depreciation has led to hyperinflation in food prices, making it increasingly difficult for the average Nigerian to afford basic necessities.

Tensions Rise as Federal High Court Gears Up for Nnamdi Kanu Trial

The economic downturn has left a significant portion of the population grappling with the harsh reality of food insecurity. The widespread impact on citizens’ ability to afford essential items has triggered growing discontent.

Critics argue that the actions of the police to seal off the NLC office infringe upon the fundamental human right of Nigerians to express their grievances through peaceful protests. They draw attention to the irony of the All Progressives Congress (APC) government, which once protested its way into power, now preventing citizens from exercising their constitutionally guaranteed right to peaceful assembly.

The message from those advocating for the nationwide protest is clear: “Tinubu, Enough Is Enough. As tensions rise, the nation watches to see how this clash between the right to protest and security measures unfolds.

Tensions Rise as Federal High Court Gears Up for Nnamdi Kanu Trial

Heavy Security As Nnamdi Kanu Trial Resumes

The Federal High Court in Abuja is currently under tight security as the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), resumes. Kanu faces charges of terrorism and treasonable felony.

Access to the court, near the Federal Ministry of Justice headquarters, is restricted, allowing entry only to individuals on a Department of State Services (DSS) vetted list.

This continuation of the trial follows the Supreme Court’s decision on December 15, 2023, allowing the Federal Government to proceed. This decision overturned a previous Court of Appeal ruling that had dismissed the charges and ordered Kanu’s release.

Read also:How Harrysong Stole From Our Music Label – Kcee

The legal journey for Kanu, arrested in Lagos on October 14, 2015, has been tumultuous, including a bail period on health grounds and a dramatic escape from Nigeria, followed by re-arrest in Kenya and forced return in June 2021.

Despite the unanimous decision in October 2022 by the appellate court to dismiss all charges against Nnamdi Kanu, citing illegal extradition practices by the Nigerian government, the Supreme Court challenges this verdict, stating it was sentiment-based.

This legal back-and-forth has heightened tensions, prompting increased security measures at the court.

In the lead judgement by Justice Garba Mohammed, read by Justice Emmanuel Agim, the Supreme Court criticized the Court of Appeal for not basing its decision on Nigerian law but on international statutes.

The apex court held that the lower court did not cite any Nigerian authority, even as it criticized the Federal Government for acting irresponsibly in bypassing the law to bring Nnamdi Kanu back for trial.

The Supreme Court emphasized that, despite any procedure, illegally obtained evidence remains valid in Nigerian courts. It suggested that if Kanu felt an illegality occurred, he should institute a civil proceeding against the Federal Government.

The court declined to align with the Court of Appeal, emphasizing the need for explicit legislation in making judgements and urged FG to approach the trial court regarding any breach of bail conditions.

  • How Harrysong Stole From Our Music Label – Kcee

Popular singer, Kingsley Okonkwo, popularly known as Kcee, has opened up on how his former label artiste, Harrysong, allegedly forged the signature of him and his brother to collect money from their client.

The music executive made this known during an interview with Beat FM.

Kcee said he had chosen not to keep silent over the issue, stressing that some people in the music industry are aware of his loggerheads with Harrysong and had made attempts to settle the dispute.

The singer alleged that the ‘Reggae Blues’ crooner forged their signatures and defrauded a client of over N3 million, which got many industry players angry after hearing the issue.

Kcee also frowned at Harrysong’s attempt to discredit his success in the music industry, adding he was already a superstar before the singer joined their record label.

He said, “This is like 8 years or 7 years we went our separate ways but he keeps coming back every year with one thing or the other. I think this year, I told myself I wasn’t going to take that anymore because I have been keeping quiet and I didn’t want to address it. But most people didn’t know what happened between me and him. I have witnesses like Ayo Animashaun and Daddy Showkey, they tried to put us together and they heard about what happened and people were angry with him. I never came out.

“Nobody knew he had to forge signatures of me and my brother, with his former manager to take money from one of our clients about N3.something millions, which is in the police right now. If I want to wake up that case tomorrow, I will wake it up. He even has a contract running, 5 years and he went out calling him out saying he wrote my songs.

“When I won Star Quest, he was in the village, still fishing with his grandmother and I did four albums, 3 with Kennis Music. I was a superstar already, coming out to discredit me at some point because I gave you umbrella to shine was nothing to write home about. I told myself before that I wasn’t going to talk about it, but I have decided that I will talk about it anytime I have the opportunity.”

Breaking: US Airman Sets Himself on Fire Outside Israeli Embassy

An active member of the US Air Force set himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in Washington on Sunday, reportedly in protest of the war in Gaza.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene just before 1:00 pm (1800 GMT) after receiving a call about a person on fire outside the Israeli Embassy, according to a message on X, formerly Twitter, by the capital’s fire department.

Upon arrival, responders found that officers from the Secret Service had already extinguished the fire. The man was transported to the hospital with critical, life-threatening injuries, as confirmed by the fire department. While an Air Force spokesperson verified his active status, no further details were provided.

A spokesperson for the Israeli embassy stated that no staff were injured, and the man was “unknown” to them. US media reports suggested that the man livestreamed the incident on Twitch, wearing fatigues and declaring his refusal to be “complicit in genocide” before setting himself ablaze and shouting “Free Palestine!” AFP has been unable to immediately verify the footage, with the New York Times reporting its removal from Twitch.

This shocking act occurred amid increasing protests across the United States against Israel’s actions in Gaza, where it is engaged in a retaliatory war following an attack on October 7 by Hamas militants. With the death toll in Gaza nearing 30,000, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, international pressure is mounting on the United States to rein in its ally Israel and call for a ceasefire.

Further analysis reveals that activities on the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX), beginning the week with a market capitalization of N57.849 trillion, closed the week at N55.861 trillion. This results in a week-to-date loss of about N1.988 trillion.

Despite the overall downturn, specific sectors showed resilience, with NGX ASem, NGX Consumer Goods, and NGX Oil and Gas appreciating by 11.66%, 2.01%, and 0.01%, respectively.

    Key Market Statistics:

    • Total turnover: 1.377 billion shares
    • Total value: N31.584 billion
    • Total deals: 42,040

The Financial Services Industry led the activity chart, contributing 69.77% and 53.33% to the total equity turnover volume and value, respectively. Other notable sectors contributing to the turnover include the Conglomerates Industry and the Oil and Gas Industry.

The top three stocks, Transnational Corporation Plc, FBN Holdings Plc, and Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc, accounted for 24.96% and 29.86% of the total equity turnover volume and value, respectively, through trading.

Amidst the weekly fluctuations in the market, fourteen stocks saw an increase, sixty-six saw a decrease, and seventy-four saw no change. This is a change from the week before, when thirty-five stocks increased, fifty-one declined, and sixty-eight stocks stayed the same.

The youngster disclosed this after his unveiling as a Vålerenga player.

He joined the European side on a four-and-half-year deal from Nigeria National League side, Beyond Limits.

Obasi said he felt really happy to make the move to Norway.

“Leaving Nigeria to come to Norway is the least expected to me, am very happy,” he said.

“I’m a player that likes to play with the team, I don’t like losing, I have everything to become the best, and a great player, I am fast.

“My main goal is to win and promote myself to the next level in my football career.”

  • Attack Our Protesters, Risk Total Shutdown – NLC Warns FG

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a warning to President Bola Tinubu and all security agencies.

According to NLC, FG is aware of plans by state-sponsored persons to attack its rallies scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Should such attacks occur, the NLC said, it would order its members to totally down tools and possibly bring the Nigerian economy to a halt.

“… if we are attacked there will be a total shutdown via withdrawal of services by workers. Let no one be deceived, we and other deprived Nigerians cannot easily be intimidated,” NLC President Joe Ajaero wrote in a statement on Sunday.

Mr Ajaero named a group which it said: “is one of the emergency groups put together, funded, promoted and remote-controlled by government to cause violence against our members for electing to peacefully protest against the hunger in the land.”

Recall that the NLC scheduled Tuesday and Wednesday to protest the cost of living crisis in the country caused by government policies, particularly the removal of petrol subsidy and the floating of the naira.

The workers’ union accused the government of failing to honour its promises to ensure policies and programmes are put in place for workers to limit the impact of the petrol subsidy removal. While food prices have gone up over 200 per cent since the Bola Tinubu administration came on board, public workers’ salaries have yet to be increased despite the government setting up committees to work out an increase.

The government has appealed to the labour unions to shelve the strike, saying it is working hard to limit the negative impact of its policies on workers. The police have also cautioned that they would allow peaceful protests but they would not allow such protests to disturb people who are not interested in taking part in it. However, the NLC insisted on the strike.

In his Sunday statement, Mr Ajaero reiterated that the labour congress and its affiliate unions would embark on its protest despite the alleged threat of disruption.

“We would want the State to know that the solution to our horrible economic situation and hunger is not by suppressing peaceful dissent or inflicting violence on peacefully protesting citizens as the government did in Minna and other cities where its agents tear-gassed and beat up women before locking them up for raising their voice against hunger. It does not lie in the deployment of State-sponsored terror. The pangs of hunger cannot be cowed by bullets or tear gas,” he wrote.

Read Mr Ajaero’s full statement below:

AS THE STATE PREPARES TO UNLEASH VIOLENCE ON US

We would want to inform Nigerians that the State has perfected plans to attack our peaceful rallies across the country.

One of the groups being primed to attack our peaceful rallies is by a nebulous name, Nigeria Civil Society Forum (NCSF).

NCSF is one of the emergency groups put together, funded, promoted and remote-controlled by government to cause violence against our members for electing to peacefully protest against the hunger in the land.

We would want the State to know that the solution to our horrible economic situation and hunger is not by suppressing peaceful dissent or inflicting violence on peacefully protesting citizens as the government did in Minna and other cities where its agents tear-gassed and beat up women before locking them up for raising their voice against hunger. It does not lie in the deployment of State-sponsored terror. The pangs of hunger cannot be cowed by bullets or tear gas.

In light of this, we at the Nigeria Labour Congress and civil society allies are moving ahead with our protest rallies against economic hardship and insecurity in line with the decision of the National Executive Council.

As citizens, we have a fundamental right to peaceful protest and history bears us witness that our protests are always peaceful except in instances of State-engineered violence.

In light of this, we advise the State to put on its thinking cap and find solutions to the pains it continues to cause the people instead of further dehumanising them.

However, if it is irrevocably set on the path of violence against us and other peace-loving Nigerians, it will be making a costly mistake because if we are attacked there will be a total shutdown via withdrawal of services by workers. Let no one be deceived, we and other deprived Nigerians cannot easily be intimidated.

Lest those in power now who may have forgotten be reminded, we faced a more resourceful and resilient adversary in order to have democracy. All we are saying now is that; let there be food for the people, _let the people live in safety, let the people live a life of dignity devoid of suffocating IMF/World Bank economic policies.

Once again we advise those waiting in the wings to unleash violence on us that this is not about the NLC but about Nigerians who are saying “enough is enough”, about a people who have resolved not to be further pushed into the pit of misery and hopelessness, while a few live in obscene luxury at our collective expense.

We are by this statement calling the attention of the international human rights body and the governments of the African Union and the United Nations that the right of the people to peacefully protest and demand for freedom from economic slavery and hardship is being threatened by the Nigerian State.

We however remain resolute, determined and prepared to express our pain and grief in a peaceful manner as Nigerians come 27th and 28th of February 2024.

    Comrade Joe Ajaero

    President.

Presidency, Nigerian Army React to Report on Alleged Military Coup Plot to Overthrow Tinubu

Military Coup: Presidency and Nigerian Army Dismiss Allegations of Plot to Overthrow Tinubu.

The presidency and the Nigerian Army have categorically refuted recent media reports suggesting a potential coup plot in Nigeria.

The office of the Special Assistant on Social Media to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu dismissed the claims as “fake news,” emphasizing the need for media outlets to uphold higher standards in information dissemination.

Similarly, the Nigerian Army, using its verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, refuted the assertion that the Presidential Guards Brigade had been placed on high alert due to unusual movements, sparking suspicions of a coup plot. The report had hinted at emergency meetings involving the brigade’s commander, Colonel Adebisi Onasanya, President Bola Tinubu, and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila.

In response to the publication, both the Army and the presidency denounced it as untrue, urging Nigerians to disregard the unfounded claims. The swift dismissal comes amid a backdrop of increasing hardship in Africa’s most populous nation.

As the nation grapples with various challenges, including economic difficulties and rising inflation, the authorities emphasize the importance of relying on credible information sources and discouraging the spread of misinformation.

It is crucial to stay vigilant and discerning amidst the evolving news landscape.
