Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger Military Juntas Announce Exit From ECOWAS

The military regimes in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, on Sunday, announced their immediate withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS.

The leaders of the three Sahel nations disclosed this in a joint statement on Sunday.

According to the military juntas, it was a “sovereign decision” to leave the Economic Community of West African States “without delay”.

All three were suspended from ECOWAS, with Niger and Mali facing heavy sanctions.

With the latest development, the juntas have recently hardened their positions and joined forces in an “Alliance of Sahel States”.

“Niger had hoped for an opportunity to talk through differences with fellow states of ECOWAS, which has cold-shouldered Niamey, imposing heavy economic and financial sanctions following the military coup that overthrew elected president Mohamed Bazoum.

“After 49 years of existence, the brave people of Burkina, Mali and Niger note with much regret, bitterness and great disappointment that their Organization has moved away from the ideals of its founding fathers and Pan-Africanism
    terrorist hordes.

“Furthermore, ECOWAS, under the influence of foreign powers, betrayed its founding principles and has become a threat to its member states and populations whose happiness is supposed to ensure.

“Indeed, the Organization has not provided assistance to our States in the context of our existential fight against terrorism and insecurity; worse, when these States decided to take their destiny into their own hands, it adopted an irrational and unacceptable posture by imposing illegal, illegitimate, inhumane and irresponsible sanctions in violation of its texts, all things which have further weakened populations already bruised by years of violence inflicted by instrumentalized and remote-controlled”, the statement read.

The incident which occurred on Saturday evening, according to eyewitnesses overshadowed the 50th coronation anniversary of the town’s traditional ruler, which the deceased came from his base in the United States of America to attend.

It was gathered that Idowu along with some other prominent sons of the ancient town went to a meeting in a part of the town after the coronation event.

As they were about leaving the venue of the meeting, the local hunters in the building were said to be shooting sporadically in celebration mood when one of them accidentally shot the party chieftain.

It was gathered that one of the security operatives attached to the deceased shot the hunter on the spot.

A Special Assistant to the deceased, Afeez Lawal, who confirmed the incident said the deceased died after loosing much blood, as he did not get adequate attention.

When we returned from the event where the governor was conferred a chieftaincy title, we headed to Ejigbo for the 50th-year coronation anniversary of the Ogiyan of Ejigbo.

Immediately, after we left the party, we were almost set to go back to Osogbo, the king’s son, Oyeyode Oyesosin said we should go to his house along Inisha road, that they wanted to do brief meeting, so those that followed him home are Asalu, Timothy and himself.

When he wanted to bid them farewell, the king’s son ordered the local hunters to fire gun to the air, unfortunately, one of the hunter’s gun was facing down, instead of him to fire to the sky, he fired the bullet downward, the bullet hit him (Idowu) on his leg, he fell, before we could rushed him to the hospital he lose a lot of blood before we got to the hospital.

  • Akpabio Denies Coming Late To Plenaries, Disrupting Legislative Schedules

Akpabio Denies Coming Late To Plenaries, Disrupting Legislative Schedules

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dispelled accusations against him “as a habitual latecomer” to plenaries.

He was responding to reports circulating in the media on Sunday, which alleged that he does not attend to urgent matters brought before him by his colleagues before proceeding to the plenary on each sitting day.

The statement, issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Eawme Eyiboh, reads: “For some time, a false narrative has been woven around the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, all in an attempt to give it a semblance of truth.

“Although we had ignored the misinformation, it has become necessary to enlighten and educate the reading public so that these stories do not gain traction.

“First, as opposed to what has been bandied in the media that Akpabio is known for lateness to plenary, being an intellectual politician and leader, he believes in Benjamin Franklin’s philosophy of ‘Time is money.’ To him, ‘Time is of the essence.’ And this is exemplified in his sterling achievements in private and public life. Without good time management skills, he could not have attained these feats.

“Secondly, Senator Akpabio as Senate President has absolute respect and regard for his distinguished colleagues and indeed all Nigerians. As the Senate President, he is not oblivious to the fact that he is just one among equals and has no cause whatsoever to undermine the elevated status of Distinguished Senators by always keeping them waiting in plenary.

“However, we want the public to know that as Chairman of the National Assembly, Senator Akpabio and his colleagues are very experienced and conversant with the legislative dynamics and are aware of the enormous legislative and administrative responsibilities of the office of the President of the Senate.

“Disruptions or lateness to any schedule of the heads of arms of government, particularly the National Assembly, are usually prioritized, not compromised.

“As the Presiding Officer, Akpabio meets with the Principal Officers before every Plenary, and emergency issues do spring up, which deserve urgent attention. Again, at every other plenary, there are always motions of urgent public/national importance from distinguished senators.

“By the provisions of the Standing Orders and Rules of the Senate, Senators with such motions are required to meet with the Presiding Officer before Plenary. Some of these issues are so urgent and cannot be kept in view, and the President of the Senate is expected to attend to them expeditiously before the commencement of Plenary. These circumstances most times creep into the commencement time.

“The lateness of the President of the Senate to the plenary at any insignificant number of times has never affected the industry of the Senate or deliberately intended to deconstruct the core mandate of the Senate President’s parliamentary core mandate.

“Any insinuation suggesting that Senator Akpabio is ‘habitually late’ and it dates back to when he was Akwa Ibom State governor is but selling a rotten apple, which no discerning mind will buy.

“We can say without equivocation that Senator Godswill Akpabio’s penchant for beating the clock is never in doubt both in appointed and elected positions he has held.

“We, therefore, advise those spreading the gospel of Akpabio’s purported lateness to Plenary to apply brakes and allow the Uncommon Senate President to concentrate on doing what he knows best—giving his all to the service of the nation and humanity,” he concluded.

“It’s difficult to assess his condition while we were in the match. But I am hoping that he will be fit for the next match.

“I want him to play. And the players want him to play.”

Meanwhile, Nwabali had earlier dispelled insinuation that he is now Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Nwabali said he got an opportunity to represent his country, adding that he would deliver whenever he got the nod to play.

“I am still not seeing myself as number one; I always say this. I only have an opportunity, and I just want to play and give my best,”
    Nwabali said.

He also said that he was not under any pressure while in goal for the Super Eagles but was rather happy with his performance so far in the competition.

Nwabali has so far kept two clean sheets in the three games played so far.

He also appealed to Nigeria’s football fans to be calm, as the goals would soon start coming to the delight of all.

“For me, the goals will come when you have someone like Victor Osimhen; for me, we are not worried about goals but about the three points. And now we have qualified.

“Monday’s win is a nice feeling for me and the team,”

    Nwabali said.

‘I’ll Make Kogi Investment Destination For Local, Foreign Investors’ – Gov Ododo

Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has vowed to make the state an attractive investment destination for local and foreign investors.

Ododo pledged this in his inaugural speech on Saturday in Lokoja.

According to the new governor of Kogi State, his administration will be aggressive, deliberate and strategic in making the business environment attractive.

“Kogi has all it takes to fulfil Nigeria’s dream of becoming the industrial hub of the global south. We are one of the most endowed states in Nigeria, with abundant mineral resources and many gifts of nature. Kogi is where two of Africa’s biggest rivers, Niger and Benue, form a confluence.

“The huge water bodies can serve in the areas of transportation, agriculture and tourism. We have all it takes with the many rivers and dams in the state to produce food all year round with all seasons of farming.

“We must produce what we eat, eat what we produce and produce what others eat. Aside from the very valuable mineral resources our state is blessed with, we have no excuse not to be the food basket of Africa with the robust agricultural platforms already put in place by my leader and predecessor, His Excellency Alh. Yahaya Bello.

“I, therefore, call on the global investment community to see Kogi as the destination of choice. Our environment is safe for investment and our policies are friendly. We will protect the investors and the interests of our people. Kogi is the place to be.

“Our economy shall witness remarkable improvements on the back of the solid foundation laid by the administration of my predecessor as we further open up our state to investors willing to collaborate with us under a robust public-private partnership framework.

“For the past few years, we have been working on how to launch our confluence and our state on the world tourism map. In the next couple of months, we are hopeful that the world will make Kogi their tourism destination of choice.

“As your governor, I will be at the forefront of our investment drive and we shall put in place a Diaspora Investment Platform to make every Kogite around the world our investment ambassador. It is economically imperative to build an economy that is driven by the private sector,” he said.

The governor held that, under his leadership, Kogi State shall be one of the sub-national hubs of pilot projects for key drivers of the Federal Government’s programmes in food security, poverty eradication, job creation, access to capital, inclusion, rule of law, the fight against corruption and overall economic growth, which would have local adaptation to the realities of Kogi State.

He promised to build on the enviable achievements of his predecessors, adding that his unprecedented life-changing achievements in virtually all sectors of the economy have now formed a solid base for his administration to build on.

Ododo also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his intervention in ensuring that the governorship election in Kogi State did not descend into a war of attrition by promoters of various political interests in the state.

He equally commended the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, security agencies and other critical stakeholders in the electoral process for ensuring a peaceful, free, fair and transparent election in Kogi State.

While stressing the need to preserve the freedom of all citizens who deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness and aspiration for any position in the state without fear of discrimination based on tribal or religious inclination, Ododo noted: “Kogi State cannot afford to revert to the fractured psyche riddled with scars of ethnicity that violated the age-long values and the very fabrics that bound our people together. As a people, we must remain faithful and true to the ideals and dreams of our founding fathers.”

The new Kogi State governor assured that his administration will deliver on its promise of a united, secure, progressive and prosperous state.

According to him: “This is the time for us to commence the process towards achieving a charter of equity on power rotation in the state because it is now apparent that no single senatorial district in our state can go it alone without the cooperation and support of others who are co-equals in the political configuration of the state.

“Our government shall hit the ground running with people-oriented programmes and projects delivered with the utmost focus on the wellbeing of our people and we shall govern with transparency, probity and accountability at all times.

“As we grapple with challenges of the past, we must reckon that it is indeed a new beginning, and we must therefore work together to stem the tide of greed and irresponsibility in whatever guise, shape or form. We must be prepared to make hard choices in our collective efforts to birth a new day in our state.

“In this new era, more homes shall be built, more jobs will be created, businesses will blossom, and our farmlands will thrive. There are real challenges in the nation’s economy, particularly as regards foreign exchange, unemployment and inflationary trends.

“We must dig deep and roll up our sleeves to confront these challenges in the real sector as a sub-national government ready to make a difference. This will require us to look at the low-hanging fruit, such as completing all the critical infrastructural projects of the immediate past administration that are dear to the well-being of our people and tapping into existing opportunities for partnership with the Federal Government.

“These will focus more on our areas of comparative advantage, such as solid minerals and steel development, agriculture, marine and blue economy, tourism and creative economy, as well as information technology and digital economy, where our youth population with tremendous energy can be hugely mobilised to become key players in the value chain.”

I Was Framed Singer, Lil Frosh Begs Davido For Career Revival After Assault Case

Lil Frosh, a Nigerian singer who is a former signee of Davido Music Worldwide (DMW), has publicly appealed to his former boss for a second chance.

Recall that in 2020, Lil Frosh was accused of assault by his ex, Gift Camille.

Camille’s brother, Michael in a series of posts on social media, alleged that Lil Frosh assaulted Camille on several occasions.

He shared pictures of his sister’s badly bruised face.

The singer was later arraigned before a Yaba magistrate court and remanded in Ikoyi prison.

Reacting to the development, Davido terminated Lil Frosh’s contract with his record label, DMW.

Sahel Nations Announce Immediate Withdrawal from ECOWAS Amid Rising Tensions.

The military rulers of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have jointly declared the withdrawal of their countries from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). This abrupt decision, revealed in a statement issued on Sunday, is being cited as a “sovereign choice” by the leaders of the three Sahel nations.

The strained relationship between the military regimes and ECOWAS dates back to the coups that unfolded in Niger last July, Burkina Faso in 2022, and Mali in 2020. The aftermath of these political upheavals saw all three nations facing suspension from ECOWAS, accompanied by stringent sanctions for Niger and Mali.

Recently, these nations have solidified their stance, forming an “Alliance of Sahel States.” This move, coupled with the withdrawal from ECOWAS, underscores their dissatisfaction with the regional organization.

As tensions escalate, concerns are mounting over the potential spillover of conflicts southward to the Gulf of Guinea states, including Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Ivory Coast. Additionally, the French military’s withdrawal from the Sahel region has intensified worries about the security vacuum in the area.
