ECOWAS: Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger Announce Decision to Exit Amid Rising Tensions

ECOWAS: Mali, Burkina Faso Give Fresh Update on Planned Exit

In a significant development, Mali and Burkina Faso have reiterated their resolve to withdraw from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), citing threats to their sovereignty and freedom as independent nations.

The military governments of these nations, part of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), have submitted official letters declaring their decision, which comes in the wake of recent military coups that ousted democratically elected civilian governments.

Mali’s foreign affairs ministry shared a copy of the withdrawal letter with AFP, and Burkina Faso’s official news agency confirmed the submission of their official notice. Although there is no official word from Niger, the statements from Mali and Burkina Faso underscore a shared sentiment among the trio.

ECOWAS, in response, noted that it awaits “formal and direct notification” from the concerned countries. According to the organization’s statutes, withdrawal cannot take effect for at least a year after official notification.

This move places Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, original ECOWAS members since 1975, at risk of facing sanctions due to the recent military coups.

On Sunday, the Alliance of Sahel States released a joint statement asserting that ECOWAS had deviated from its original principles, succumbing to foreign influences and posing a threat to member nations and citizens. Nigeria, a dominant force in the region, expressed disappointment in a late Monday statement, emphasizing a commitment to due process and protecting the rights and welfare of all citizens of member states.

Nigeria’s foreign ministry stated, “Instead, unelected leaders engage in public posturing to deny their people the sovereign right to make fundamental choices over their freedom of movement, freedom to trade, and freedom to choose their own leaders.”

Meanwhile, the military leaders of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso have immediately withdrawn from ECOWAS, prompting readiness from ECOWAS to engage with the three nations in line with its interests.

However, the trio has solidified their positions, forming an “alliance of Sahel states” in a move that adds complexity to the geopolitical landscape of West Africa.

  • President Tinubu Directs CBN to Oversee Crude Oil Sales for Enhanced Transparency

President Tinubu Moves Crude Oil Sales Revenue From NNPCL To CBN

In a significant move aimed at bolstering transparency and accountability, President Bola Tinubu has instructed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to assume control of crude oil sales, a responsibility previously held solely by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

Over the years, the NNPCL maintained exclusive control over crude oil sales, only submitting accounts to the Federal Government. The directive from President Tinubu signifies a paradigm shift in ensuring a more transparent process.

Under the new arrangement by President Tinubu, the NNPC will now submit receipts for crude oil sales to the CBN for thorough vetting and documentation. Sources within the CBN have confirmed that this adjustment will result in immediate forwarding of payment receipts for oil sales to the apex bank.

The move is designed to eliminate any gaps in the process of crude oil sales and declared receipts. Analysts argue that the previous system allowed the NNPC to have overall responsibility, rendering any amount it wished to the Federal Government for crude oil sales.

This shift is seen as a necessary response to the challenges faced by declining oil revenue, attributed to lower oil production resulting from crude theft and other illicit practices.

CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, highlighted the collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Finance and the NNPCL during a recent keynote address at the launch of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) “2024 Macroeconomic Outlook Report.” He emphasized that this collaboration aims to ensure the return of all foreign inflows to the Central Bank.

Cardoso expressed optimism about the impact of these coordinated efforts on foreign exchange flows, contributing to the accretion of reserves.

He stated, “The expected stability in the foreign exchange market for 2024 can be attributed to the reduction in petroleum product imports and the recent implementation of a market-determined exchange rate policy by the CBN.”

This reform by President Tinubu, according to Cardoso, is designed to streamline and unify multiple exchange rates, fostering transparency and reducing opportunities for arbitrage.

The anticipated consistent and stable exchange rate is expected to boost investor confidence and attract foreign investment, enhancing Nigeria’s appeal to global investors.

EPL: ‘I Feel Sad’ – Chris Sutton Names Three Players To Follow Klopp Out Of Liverpool

Former Chelsea star, Chris Sutton has tipped Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson to follow manager Jurgen Klopp out of Liverpool at the end of the season.

Klopp had last Friday announced his decision to step down as Liverpool coach after this season.

Speaking on the development, Sutton also said he felt sad that the German is leaving Anfield at the end of the season.

“I feel sad that he [Klopp] is leaving because he’s been such a giant,” Sutton said (via Caught Offside).

“But it is the challenge since he’s been at Liverpool and how they have pushed Manchester City. Without Klopp, City would have just romped to absolutely everything.

“I suppose there are also people out there who think it’s the end of an era with Klopp. Looks like Salah will move on. Would the likes of Van Dijk think well Klopp brought me into Liverpool and think about elsewhere. Just another challenge.

“I think it will have had a massive impact on the team and they will be desperate for Klopp to leave on a high. You can’t speak for individuals like Van Dijk but maybe Robertson as well, maybe they will see that as an end of an era and move on.”

Elderly Woman Leaving $2.8M Inheritance To Pets After Kids Didnt Visit When She Was Ill

An elderly mom from Shanghai has decided to leave her $2.8 million fortune to her pets, stating that they are her only source of comfort in her old age.

The woman, known only as Ms Liu, cut her three children out of her will because they didn’t visit or care for her, according to The South China Morning Post.

Originally, Ms Liu had planned to leave her wealth to her children, but changed her mind due to their lack of contact.

In her updated will, she insists all her money must be used to look after her pets and any future offspring, with a local vet clinic appointed to manage her inheritance and care for the animals.

She wanted to leave all her money directly to her pets, but that’s not allowed in China, Chen Kai, an official from the Will Registration Centre headquarters in Beijing told The South China Morning Post.

“However, there are alternatives to solve this issue,” Kai said.

“Liu’s current will is one way and we would have advised her to appoint a person she trusts to supervise the vet clinic to ensure the pets are properly cared for.”

An official warned Ms Liu about the risks of giving all her cash to the vet clinic.

“We told Auntie Liu that if her children change their attitude towards her, she could always alter her will again,” they said.

The story has sparked a lot of online debate in China.

Pope Francis Addresses Controversy Surrounding Same-Sex Blessings, Notes African Exception

In a recent interview, Pope Francis defended his decision to bless same-sex couples, expressing confidence that the controversy surrounding the move would eventually be understood by critics, with the exception of Africans, whom he referred to as “a special case.”

The Pope highlighted his belief that the spirit of the ‘Fiducia Supplicans,’ a document permitting blessings for same-sex couples, would gradually reassure everyone. However, he acknowledged the unique cultural perspective of Africans, stating that their rejection of homosexuality stems from cultural values.

The Fiducia Supplicans, released last month, has sparked intense debate within the Catholic Church, particularly facing strong resistance from African bishops. Pope Francis, speaking to an Italian newspaper, attributed the opposition to small ideological groups, singling out Africans as a distinctive case due to cultural views that deem homosexuality as ‘bad.’

Addressing the dissenters, the Pope stated, “Those who protest vehemently belong to small ideological groups. A special case are Africans: for them, homosexuality is something ‘bad’ from a cultural point of view; they don’t tolerate it.”

Despite the challenges, Pope Francis expressed optimism that the declaration by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, which aims to include rather than divide, would gradually reassure everyone.

Federal High Court Adjourns Nnamdi Kanu’s N50 Billion Lawsuit against FG

Nnamdi Kanu’s N50 Billion Lawsuit Hits Pause in Abuja Court”

The ongoing legal saga involving the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, took a new turn as the Federal High Court in Abuja adjourned the N50 billion lawsuit filed by Kanu against the Federal Government.

The adjournment was prompted by a development in Kanu’s legal representation. Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s lawyer, informed the court that he had filed a notice for a change of counsel, taking over the case from Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), who initially filed the suit on April 7, 2022.

Presiding over the case, Justice Inyang Ekwo instructed Ejimakor to verify if a similar matter was pending before any sister court or if a judgment had been delivered in a related suit. Notably, no counsel appeared for the defendants during the proceedings, leading the judge to order the issuance and service of a hearing notice on them for the next adjourned date.

The court set April 27 for further hearing of the lawsuit, which bears reference number FHC/ABJ/CS/462/2022. In this legal battle, Nnamdi Kanu contends that his rights were violated when he was allegedly unlawfully taken from Kenya and forcibly returned to Nigeria for trial.

The lawsuit challenges the manner of Kanu’s abduction and subsequent transportation, citing violations of African Charter on human and peoples’ rights. Kanu seeks the court’s intervention to determine the legality of the charges brought against him and requests various reliefs, including his release from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The Federal government and the Attorney General of the Federation, in a notice of preliminary objection, argued that the lawsuit is an abuse of court process.

They claim that Nnamdi Kanu had previously filed a similar lawsuit in a Federal High Court, Umuahia Division, with identical facts and involving the same defendants, rendering the current case an abuse of court process.

As the legal battle unfolds, the eyes of many remain on the courtroom, anticipating the resolution of Kanu’s claims and the response from the Federal Government and the Attorney General of the Federation.
