Who Truly founded Lagos: Yoruba or Binis? Oba of Benin’s claim Sparks fresh controversy.
In a recent statement by the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, asserting that the Binis founded Lagos State, social media has become a battleground of opinions.
During his visit to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Sunday, the monarch stated, “It is in the history books that the Binis founded Lagos. When some people will hear it now, they will go haywire, what is the Oba saying there again? But it is true. Go and check the records. Maybe not all over Lagos as we know it now but certain areas in Lagos, maybe the nucleus of Lagos, was founded by my ancestors. The Oba of Lagos will say so.”
This declaration ignited a flurry of reactions from notable personalities and netizens on social media, with diverse views on the matter.
One dissenting voice was that of Lagos Chief, the Balogun of Eko, Abisoye Oshodi, who disagreed with the monarch’s claim, stating, “Point of correction Sir, Lagos was never founded by the Binis. I am glad that you said some parts of Lagos, not the entire Lagos. You are right, your ancestors settled on a small Island that was called Eko then, before the creation of Lagos. On this very Island, they never created it.”
Comedian Seyi Law joined the conversation, expressing his perspective, “The distortion of our history in the South West will never cease to amaze me. What is the sin of South-westerners that make some tribes want to revise our history? Maybe we just have to revisit our liberalism. The same way some Itsekiri warriors settled in Epe was the same way some Benin warriors settled in Isale Eko of Lagos Island.”
Adding to the dialogue, a user named B0lutife criticized the Yorubas, saying, “You ridiculed our traditional leaders before and during the election. The Ooni of Ife and Oba of Lagos were your regular punching bags but small ‘clearance’ by the Yorubas when your Oba misyarned on Lagos history, you are threatening us with curses.”
Addressing the heated discussions, another user, OgbeniDipo, urged netizens to control their emotions, moderate their language, and disagree in a civil manner. This caution comes as the age-old controversy surrounding the founders of Lagos State continues to provoke debate among the Yorubas and the Binis.
In 2019, a prominent Lagos Prince, Alhaji Tajudeen Olusi, claimed that the Binis were the first settlers in Lagos, asserting that Lagos was part of the Bini Empire. This perspective countered claims made by Chief Musiliu Anibaba, who asserted that the Aworis were the first persons to settle in Lagos. The debate persists, and the historical discourse surrounding the foundation of Lagos remains a hot topic in social conversations.

Renowned tech mogul, Elon Musk, embarked on a visit to Israel where he unequivocally declared his support for Israel’s efforts in the conflict against Hamas. The statement, “There’s no choice,” encapsulated Musk’s acknowledgment of Israel’s determination to dismantle Hamas.
Musk made these remarks during a crucial meeting held on Monday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, alongside other key stakeholders. The meeting took place in Kfar Aza, Israel, where discussions delved into the aftermath of the October 7 Hamas attack. Musk also interacted with victims and the families of hostages affected by the incident.
The billionaire’s visit to Israel unfolded less than two weeks after he endorsed an antisemitic conspiracy theory on his social media platform, X. This endorsement triggered a significant backlash, leading to prominent companies pulling their advertisements from Musk’s microblogging site.
Despite the controversy surrounding Musk’s recent actions, his visit to Israel provided an opportunity for direct engagement with Israeli leaders and a firsthand understanding of the challenges posed by the conflict. The meeting addressed critical issues, and Musk’s support for Israel’s stance against Hamas was a focal point of the discussions.
This visit holds particular significance given the recent antisemitism controversy linked to Musk’s online platform. It underscores the complexities and sensitivities surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the need for responsible communication on influential platforms.

Accompanied by Netanyahu, Musk initiated his visit with a tour of towns in southern Israel severely impacted by the Hamas’ October 7 assault.
While visiting Kfar Aza, Musk witnessed the aftermath of the Hamas attack, where terrorists infiltrated the community and approximately 20 others.
Musk described the experience as “jarring” and expressed his observation of what seemed to be “joy” on the part of the terrorists in the video footage.
Addressing the common counterargument that Israel has also caused civilian casualties in Gaza, Musk emphasized a crucial distinction. He stated that Israel actively strives to avoid civilian casualties, contrasting it with what he perceived as a lack of remorse or joy expressed by those involved.
Musk asserted that there is no alternative for Israel but to dismantle Hamas. However, he emphasised the need for Israel to assist the civilian population that remains, drawing a parallel to the post-World War II US occupation of Germany and Japan.
Netanyahu conveyed the necessity of eliminating Hamas for the security, peace, and betterment of life for Gazans. He likened the situation to the eradication of poisonous regimes in Germany and Japan after World War II. Musk concurred, stating, “There’s no choice,” and underscored the importance of a dual approach involving firmness against terrorists alongside aid for the civilian population, mirroring the post-war efforts in Germany and Japan.

“Discussing the matter further, he pointed out the historical tendency for victors to penalize the defeated, citing the post-World War II rehabilitation of Germany and Japan by the allies as instances where reconstruction efforts after a decisive victory contributed to prolonged peace.
However, Herzog expressed serious concerns about the alleged presence of antisemitism on Musk’s X platform and called on the tech mogul to take immediate action to address it. He underscored the global impact of antisemitism on human behavior and urged a collaborative effort to combat this issue.
In his remarks, Herzog specifically mentioned that Musk’s X platform seemed to exhibit signs of antisemitism. He emphasized the urgency for Musk to address this concern promptly.
Herzog stated, ‘Unfortunately, we are inundated by antisemitism, which is Jew hate, and Jew hate impacts the entire notion of behavior of human beings in so many places around the world. And you have a huge role to play, and I think we need to fight it together, because under the platforms you lead, unfortunately, there is a harboring of a lot of old hate which is Jew hate, which is antisemitism.’”
“Responding to Herzog’s remarks, Musk acknowledged the issue of antisemitism but attributed it to the impact of propaganda on individuals since childhood. He pointed out that individuals have been exposed to propaganda from a young age, leading them to hold harmful beliefs, including supporting violence against innocent people.
Since he took over the company last year, Musk has faced criticism for what some critics argue is a proliferation of hate speech in general on the platform.
What is anti-Semitism?
Anti-Semitism refers to prejudice, discrimination, or hostility directed against Jewish people. It can manifest in various forms, including verbal or physical attacks, stereotypes, and discriminatory practices. Anti-Semitism has a long history and has taken different shapes over the centuries, from religious persecution to racial and ethnic prejudice.
Efforts to combat anti-Semitism involve promoting awareness, education, and fostering tolerance. Governments, organizations, and communities around the world work to address and eliminate instances of anti-Semitism to ensure the safety and equal treatment of Jewish individuals. It is essential to recognize and challenge anti-Semitic attitudes to build a more inclusive and tolerant society.
Trial of Former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele Adjourned to January 18, 2024
The Federal Capital Territory High Court has adjourned the trial in the alleged procurement fraud case involving the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele. The proceedings are now scheduled to continue on January 18, 2024.
Emefiele stands accused of utilizing his position to grant an illicit advantage to Sa’adatu Yaro, a CBN staff member, by allegedly awarding a contract for the procurement of 43 vehicles valued at N1.2 billion between 2018 and 2020.
Following the allegations, Emefiele was remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre. On November 22, his bail application was presented before the court, leading to Justice Hamza Muazu granting bail to Emefiele in the sum of N300 million. The judge specified that the former CBN governor must provide two sureties in a like sum.
Notably, the sureties are required to possess certificates of occupancy and titles of properties within the Maitama district in Abuja.
Despite the bail being granted, Emefiele is yet to fulfill the conditions, and he was brought to court and subsequently taken away by armed personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service. The case continues to unfold, with the next hearing set for January 18, 2024.
The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, has nullified the election of the Deputy Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Jamilu Barade. This decision follows closely on the heels of the recent removal of the Speaker of the State Assembly, Abubakar Suleiman.
The three-man panel of the appellate court, in a late Monday judgment, overturned the ruling of the Bauchi State House of Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal, which had affirmed Barade’s election as the representative of Bauchi Central State constituency.
The court upheld the appeal of the APC candidate, citing overvoting in nine polling units.
As a consequence, the Appeal Court has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to retrieve the Certificate of Return previously issued to the Deputy Speaker. Furthermore, the court mandated INEC to conduct rerun elections in the affected polling units before determining the final winner.
The ruling also affects the member representing Zungur/Galambi/Miri Constituency, Yusuf Ahmed, of the PDP, who has also been unseated, with a rerun ordered in specific polling units.
While the Bauchi INEC office claims not to have received the court order, it expresses readiness for the rerun within the stipulated time frame. Aliyu Shaba, INEC’s Officer in charge of Voter Education, stated, “We have not been served the court order, but our lawyer said that we have 90 days. We are ready to obey the court. We are going to fix a date for the rerun.
APC’s counsel, U.B. Darazo, welcomed the judgment, emphasizing the presence of overvoting in selected polling units. He expressed satisfaction with the ruling, seeing it as an indication that the 2023 elections in the state were flawed.
Edo State’s Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has emphatically stated his commitment to triumph over Governor Godwin Obaseki’s chosen candidate in the upcoming gubernatorial election slated for next year.
Shaibu conveyed this determination during a Monday evening appearance on a TVC program, asserting that the support of the people was behind him, undeterred by Obaseki’s efforts to influence the electorate.
In his resolute declaration, Shaibu emphasized that his victory would stem from the genuine desire of Edo people to have one of their own as their leader.
He criticized Obaseki for permitting certain individuals with vested interests to create divisions between them and scrutinized the governor’s management style.
Shaibu remarked, “I will defeat the so-called candidate of the governor, not because I have the power, but because Edo people want their own, and I am their own. Edo people do not want importation; they want their own.”
Despite acknowledging the challenges posed by Obaseki and his allies, Shaibu remained steadfast, stating, “When I said I was pressed, but not distressed, I understand the kind of intimidation and oppression I have gone through.”
Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu expressed his dissatisfaction with Governor Godwin Obaseki.
In a recent revelation on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily program accusing him of intimidation and harassment.
The crux of Shaibu’s complaint lies in the governor’s failure to engage in a discussion regarding the choice of a successor, a matter Shaibu deems essential.
Despite acknowledging a less-than-smooth association with Governor Obaseki, Shaibu emphasized his constitutional right to vie for the highest office in the state.
Reflecting on Obaseki’s past praises, Shaibu questioned the shift in dynamics, stating, “He (Obaseki) said I am the type of deputy governor any governor will wish to have. So, what has changed? What has changed simply is that I want to be the governor of Edo State.”
Philip Shaibu advocated for a more inclusive approach, suggesting that rather than resorting to intimidation tactics, the governor should convene a meeting with all aspirants to openly discuss and present reasons for his preferred candidate.
The deputy governor criticized the blurred lines between loyalty and constitutional rights among some of the governor’s supporters.
Undeterred by the challenges, Philip Shaibu affirmed his loyalty to Governor Obaseki but underscored the importance of recognizing his right to contest.
He conveyed, “Loyalty is given and it is fully given even with the humiliations and everything I am still loyal, but when it comes to contest, it is my constitutional right.”
Despite the strain in their relationship, Shaibu expressed hope for a resolution, stating, “I have no problem but I beg the governor, the governor should know he is the leader, he must be able to organize all of us, he must not love one more than the other.
If he must do so, he must humiliate one,” adding that he has been “praying that this whole relationship thing comes to normal.”
Attahiru Jega, former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has called upon President Bola Tinubu to reassess the appointments of the commission’s Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).
Jega expressed apprehensions about the perceived partisanship of some RECs, prompting him to advocate for a thorough review.
Approximately a month ago, President Tinubu nominated 10 RECs, a move subsequently confirmed by the Senate.
However, the appointments have faced scrutiny, with allegations surfacing that some of the RECs are actively involved in partisan politics.
Responding to these criticisms, Jega emphasized the importance of addressing the concerns, stating that the failure to review these appointments sends a troubling message.
Appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Jega articulated his stance:
“I think there is no doubt that if the President were listening, my advice would be to immediately review the appointment of the Resident Electoral Commissioners that was passed by the Senate recently.”
He underscored the significance of this review, expressing concern that the current situation undermines the government’s commitment to enhancing the integrity of elections and implies indifference toward safeguarding the independence and impartiality of the election management body.
The newly appointed RECs include individuals such as Mr. Etekamba Umoren, Mr. Isah Shaka Ehimeakne, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, Mr. Abubakar Ahmed Ma’aji, Mr. Shehu Wahab, Dr. Bunmi Omoseyindemi, Mr. Aminu Kasimu Idris, Prof. Mohammed Yelwa, Dr. Anugbum Onuoha, and Mr. Isma’ila Kaura Moyi.
Jega’s call for a comprehensive review highlights the importance of addressing potential partisan influences within the electoral commission.

Tensions are rising in Ondo as lawmakers in the state House of Assembly gather for their first plenary on Tuesday, November 28, following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu to address the political crisis gripping the state.
The aftermath of the meeting has sparked various interpretations, with some supporters of Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa insisting that the resolution favours declaring him acting governor.
Sources within Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu’s cabinet reveal plots uncovered to thwart the governor and declare Aiyedatiwa as acting governor, contrary to the agreement reached with President Tinubu.
Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Tinubu, Ajuri Ngelale, clarified in a statement that the President advised maintaining the status quo.
He affirmed that Governor Akeredolu remains the Chief Executive of the State, with Aiyedatiwa as the deputy governor, and the State Executive Council continuing their duties.
However, reports indicate a move by 11 lawmakers loyal to Aiyedatiwa to sway Akeredolu’s loyalists to support declaring Aiyedatiwa as acting governor during Tuesday’s plenary.
One lawmaker, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed a call from the deputy governor insisting on his declaration as acting governor, defying the resolutions from the meeting with President Tinubu.
The state chairman of the party, Hon. Ade Adetimehin, asserted that no politician in the state would go against the resolution reached with President Tinubu, emphasizing the significance of upholding the President’s directives.
Speaker of the Assembly, Hon Olamide Oladiji, affirmed that the lawmakers align with the outcome of the meeting with President Tinubu. Majority Leader Hon. Emmanuel Ogunmolasuyi clarified that there is no plan to welcome the deputy governor with fanfare or proclaim him as acting governor.
The Ondo Progressives Network (OPN) expressed concern over speculations that Aiyedatiwa was plotting with lawmakers to declare himself acting governor, cautioning against breaching the resolution reached with the President.
The group urged the deputy governor to resist the lure of desperation for power and advised maintaining the agreement reached in Abuja to serve the interests of the people and the state.
As tensions escalate, the political landscape in Ondo remains precarious, with citizens and stakeholders closely watching the unfolding events.

Lawmakers Propose Establishment of 32 Additional Federal Varsities, Polytechnics, and Institutions of Education
In a significant move, lawmakers in the 10th National Assembly have introduced 32 measures in both the Senate and the House of Representatives to establish new federal universities, polytechnics, and institutions of education. The proposals, spearheaded by various legislators, aim to expand educational opportunities across the country.
However, these proposals have not been without controversy. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other experts have cautioned the government against the establishment of new institutions without adequate funding for existing ones.
The concern revolves around the need to prioritize the enhancement of current educational institutions to ensure quality education.
Nigeria currently boasts 52 federal universities, according to official data from the National Universities Commission. Additionally, the country has 63 public universities and 147 private institutions. In the realm of polytechnics, there are 40 federal, 49 state-owned, and 76 private institutions, as reported by the National Board for Technical Education.
The healthcare education sector includes 70 federal and state-owned colleges of health, along with 17 private colleges. Furthermore, the National Commission for Colleges of Education estimates that Nigeria has 219 colleges of education.
A closer look at the proposed bills reveals the Speaker of the House leading the pack. The Speaker has advocated for the establishment of the Federal University of Technology in Kaduna, with the bill receiving its first reading on July 6, 2023. Similarly, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu has proposed the creation of the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences in Bende, Abia State.
Other bills suggest the establishment of institutions such as the Federal University of Information and Communications Technology in Lagos Island, the Federal University of Agriculture in Ute Okpa, Delta State, and the Federal University of Biomedical Sciences in Benue State. Additionally, proposals include the establishment of the Federal College of Health Sciences in Gaya, the Federal College of Dental Technology in Faggae, the Federal College of Agriculture in Agila, Benue State, and the Federal College of Education in Dangi-Kanam, Plateau State, among others.
The introduction of these bills underscores the ongoing commitment of lawmakers to expand educational infrastructure across the nation. However, the debates surrounding funding priorities and the need for adequate resources for existing institutions will likely continue as these proposals progress through the legislative process.
