  • Breaking: Appeal Court Affirms Ned Nwoko Winner Of Delta North Senatorial Seat, Dismisses Senator Nwaoboshi’s Plea

Court of Appeal Upholds Senator Nwaoboshi’s Removal

The Court of Appeal in Asaba has affirmed the removal of Senator Peter Nwaoboshi as the senator-elect for Delta North Senatorial District.

Justice Olubunmi Oyewole, delivering the judgment via Zoom, declared Nwaoboshi’s appeal lacking in merit.

In April, the Federal High Court in Abuja had invalidated Nwaoboshi’s election as the senator-elect for Delta North Senatorial District.

The judgment came in response to a suit filed by Mr. Ned Nwoko, challenging Nwaoboshi’s candidacy in the October 2, 2018 primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta.

Justice Ahmed Mohammed, in his ruling, determined that Nwaoboshi was not the rightful candidate of the PDP in the primary election.

He directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish Nwoko’s name as the PDP candidate, affirming that Nwoko secured the highest number of votes in the primary.

Additionally, in September, the National and State Houses of Assembly Election Tribunal in Asaba dismissed a petition from the All Progressives Congress (APC) against Nwoko, filed by Senator Nwaoboshi.

The Tribunal imposed a cost of N500,000 on the petitioner.

In the recent appeal (suit numbered CA-AS-EP-SEN-DL-36-2023), Nwaoboshi contested the tribunal’s judgment with INEC and Ned Nwoko listed as the Respondents.

Justice Oyewole, in delivering the ruling, concluded that the appeal lacked merit and was subsequently dismissed. No costs were awarded.

Joe Ajaero, NLC President Arrested Amid Imo State Strike Tensions

Nigeria Labour Congress President Joe Ajaero Arrested Amid Imo State Strike Tensions.

Tensions escalated in Imo State as operatives of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) allegedly arrested the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, in Owerri, the state’s capital. Ajaero was reportedly taken into custody at the state secretariat of the congress and transported to an undisclosed location.

The Head of Information for the NLC, Benson Upah, confirmed the arrest, expressing concern over the development. Upah conveyed this information via a text message to PUNCH, emphasizing that Ajaero was apprehended by heavily armed policemen.

This incident occurred as the NLC had previously announced plans to mobilize its members for a total strike in Imo State starting on November 1, 2023.

During a press briefing on Sunday, Ajaero had accused the Imo State Government of violating the rights of Nigerian workers in the state. He pointed to alleged neglect of workers’ welfare and the non-payment of salaries, which, according to him, had resulted in the unfortunate deaths of some workers.

Ajaero further outlined a series of grievances against the Imo State Government, including the failure to implement previous agreements, outstanding salary arrears of approximately 20 months, unjust declarations of workers and pensioners as ghost workers, and unsettled gratuity arrears.

One of the most concerning aspects of these allegations is that approximately 10,000 pensioners have been wrongly labeled as ghost pensioners, enduring over 22 months of unpaid pensions. Furthermore, about 11,000 workers have been accused by the Imo State Government of being ghost workers.

The NLC president also raised concerns about the state government’s non-compliance with the national minimum wage, highlighting the government’s resistance to social dialogue and collective bargaining to resolve these pressing issues.

The arrest of Joe Ajaero amid the already tense labor strike situation in Imo State has further heightened concerns and calls for a peaceful and constructive resolution to the ongoing labor disputes. As the situation unfolds, both labor unions and the state government will need to engage in dialogue to address the grievances and concerns of workers in Imo State.

Outrage as Tinubu budgets N5 billion for Presidential yacht, N5.5 billion for student loan

Federal Government Allocates Funds for Presidential Yacht and Student Loan in 2023 Supplementary Budget.

In a move that has raised eyebrows and sparked discussions, the Federal Government of Nigeria led by Bola Tinubu has revealed its budgetary allocations in the 2023 supplementary budget, which includes a substantial amount for a Presidential yacht and an education loan fund.

According to details obtained by Nairametrics from the 2023 supplementary appropriation, the Federal Government plans to allocate the sum of N5.095 billion for the purchase of a Presidential yacht. This allocation falls under the capital expenditure for the Nigeria Navy. Additionally, an education loan fund has been allocated N5.5 billion as part of the budgetary provisions.

The Nigerian Navy’s budget for 2023 includes a proposed capital expenditure of N42.3 billion and a recurrent expenditure of N20.42 billion, totaling approximately N62.8 billion. Beyond the Presidential yacht, other items in the budget proposal from the Nigerian Navy encompass the purchase of vehicles, the construction of the naval base in Lekki and Epe, the provision of critical equipment, and the acquisition of ammunition.

FG announces date to begin disbursement of student loans

Under the education loan program, the Federal Government is set to allocate N5.5 billion to fund student loans. This allocation is part of the capital supplementation for the 2023 supplementary budget, which amounts to a total of N210.5 billion.

The education loan program, officially known as the Access to Education Act or Student Loan Act, was sponsored by Rt. Hon Femi Gbajabiamila and passed by the ninth National Assembly. It was subsequently signed into law by President Bola Tinubu in June.

The primary aim of this law is to provide interest-free loans to students in higher institutions across the country. By doing so, it aims to put an end to the persistent industrial actions that have plagued higher institutions of learning in Nigeria. These actions, often spearheaded by staff unions like ASUU and ASUP, have been a major disruption to academic calendars, causing significant delays in students’ education.

In his recent address at the Nigeria Economic Summit, President Bola Tinubu emphasized the importance of the student loan program, stating that it “must begin in January 2024” after experiencing some initial delays.

Nigerian universities have been facing a recurring issue of industrial actions by staff unions, such as ASUU and ASUP, primarily due to challenges like insufficient funding and autonomy for tertiary institutions. In 2022, Nigerian universities lost approximately eight months of learning due to an industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). In 2020, the university staff union also embarked on a nine-month strike to press their demands to the government.

The allocation of funds for both a Presidential yacht and the education loan program has sparked discussions about priorities and resource allocation in a country facing various economic and social challenges. It remains to be seen how these budgetary allocations will impact the nation’s education sector and the government’s plans for maritime activities.

Wike Emphasizes the Significance of Political Base

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has underscored the crucial role of a political base in maintaining political relevance.

During a meeting with South-South leaders in his Abuja office, Wike stated that losing one’s political base equates to losing political significance.

He emphasized that preserving one’s political structure is essential for maintaining relevance in the political arena.

Is it not your political structure? Will you allow anybody to just cut you out immediately? Everybody has a base. If you take my base, am I not politically irrelevant?”

The political relationship between Wike and the Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara, is reported to be strained.

Over 100,000 Registered Voters to Sit Out Kogi Governorship Election

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kogi State, Gabriel Longpet, has revealed that a staggering 108,000 registered voters are set to abstain from participating in the upcoming governorship election on November 11.

This substantial figure corresponds to the number of registered voters who failed to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) during the four-week window provided by INEC, spanning from September 10 to October 9, 2023.

In an exclusive interview with our correspondent in Lokoja, the Kogi REC disclosed that by the close of the collection period on October 9, only 20,000 PVCs had been retrieved out of the outstanding 128,000 uncollected prior to the general election in February 2023.

Longpet expressed his disappointment, stating, “within the period of four weeks, we were not able to distribute to people the number of PVCs we estimated because people didn’t come to collect their cards.

Actually, just about 20,000 out of the 128,000 were collected during the period of the four weeks.”

Notably, Kogi conducts its gubernatorial election outside INEC’s regular election calendar due to past political crises and subsequent legal injunctions.

In the previous presidential election held on February 25, 2023, out of 1.65 million registered voters, only 476,038 individuals cast their votes, indicating that just one in every four registered voters in the state participated. Additionally, 128,000 PVCs remained uncollected.

Addressing concerns about accessibility to flood-prone and riverine areas in the state for the smooth movement of election materials and personnel, the REC assured that special arrangements, including collaboration with the Air Force and Navy, are being made to facilitate transportation.

Dr. Longpet also emphasized that ad-hoc staff must ensure that their transfer accounts are with banks recognized by the Central Bank of Nigeria to avoid payment delays after the election, cautioning against the use of online banks not recognized by the CBN.

Coach Fabio Grosso of Olympique Lyon Sustains Head Injury in Marseille

Nine individuals have been apprehended by French authorities in connection with a violent assault on buses transporting the Olympique Lyon team and their supporters in Marseille. The attack resulted in coach Fabio Grosso sustaining a head injury and the postponement of the scheduled game. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin reported that five police officers were also injured during the Sunday night incident, which has raised concerns about football-related violence across the nation.

Despite the severity of the attack, it is unlikely that the nine-time French champions will face disciplinary sanctions. The incident occurred outside the Vélodrome stadium, placing responsibility on public authorities rather than the club. A French league committee responsible for scheduling competitions has taken charge of the case instead of the discipline commission.

The assault occurred as the team bus was en route to the Stade Vélodrome, resulting in damage to several windows. Fabio Grosso suffered injuries from shards of glass, requiring medical attention and stitches for a deep cut above his left eye, along with a large bandage around his head. Olympique Lyon’s assistant coach, Raffaele Longo, was also injured, and buses carrying Lyon fans were targeted as well.

Olympique Lyon Attack Gets International Attention

The incident has gained international attention and comes at an inopportune time for the French league, which is in the midst of negotiations for the sale of its TV rights abroad. Recently, the league had to cancel the auction for domestic broadcast rights for the 2024-2029 period due to insufficient bids meeting the minimum price requirement.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino emphasized the incompatibility of violence with soccer, both on and off the field, and called on competent authorities to take appropriate measures via Instagram.

France’s Sports Minister, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, urged a “global response” and emphasized that the French league, the teams, and fan groups should all share responsibility. She called for stricter measures against troublemakers during an interview on France-2 television. She and Minister Darmanin defended the police protection provided for the Lyon team, despite its inability to prevent the attack.

Marseille president Pablo Longoria condemned the attack, deeming it unacceptable, and wished Fabio Grosso a swift recovery. He lamented the fact that a small group’s thoughtless actions spoiled the evening and prevented 65,000 fans from enjoying the soccer match.

Tensions between the teams have been ongoing, notably since a violent brawl between the Olympique Marseille and Olympique Lyon fans a decade ago that left 17 people injured. Both clubs have been facing recent challenges, with Marseille struggling in form and Lyon yet to secure a win in the league.

  • Panic as Islamic preacher wanted by Indian counterterrorism agency for money laundering, violence arrives Nigeria on Sultan’s invitation

Panic as Islamic preacher wanted by Indian counterterrorism agency for money laundering, violence arrives Nigeria on Sultan’s invitation

Controversial Islamic Preacher Zakir Naik Arrives in Nigeria on Sultan’s Invitation

Zakir Naik, a prominent Islamic preacher wanted by the Indian counterterrorism agency for alleged involvement in inciting religious “disharmony or feelings of enmity, hatred” in his teachings, arrived in Nigeria on Monday, following an invitation from Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto.

Mr. Naik’s presence in Nigeria has raised concerns due to his controversial teachings and the potential impact on the already complex religious landscape in the country. Nigeria has faced issues of religious violence and the activities of Boko Haram terrorists, primarily a Muslim extremist group. His scheduled four-day lectures in Sokoto, Abuja, and Ilorin have sparked worries that they may inflame religious tensions or provoke insecurity.

Zakir Naik gained notoriety when one of the suspects in the 2016 Dhaka attack, which led to the tragic deaths of 22 people, claimed that the preacher’s teachings had motivated him to commit violence.

Late Monday, Mr. Naik uploaded photos on social media, showing him alongside officials of the Nigerian Immigration Service and Air Force, captioning them as “Interaction with Muslim Immigration.” This sparked criticism from many citizens who pointed out that Nigeria is a religiously diverse nation, not exclusively Muslim.

In addition to allegations related to his teachings, Indian authorities have charged Zakir Naik with money laundering, claiming he used $28 million to purchase lavish properties in India and employed relatives as intermediaries to handle illicit funds. He has vehemently denied these allegations.

India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigated Mr. Naik’s Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) and alleged that it received funds from dubious or suspicious sources. These funds were purportedly used to buy luxury properties in India, construct extravagant homes in Dubai, and finance events where he delivered what were deemed “provocative speeches.” The Indian ED also reported suspicious transactions between his UAE and Indian bank accounts.

Notably, Zakir Naik has been banned from entering the UK due to comments that were considered unacceptable and harmful to public good, as stated by then Home Secretary Theresa May in 2010. He was also prohibited from giving public speeches in Malaysia in 2019 due to incendiary racial remarks.

As of March 2023, India’s Ministry of External Affairs was actively working with Omani authorities to extradite Zakir Naik, who is wanted in multiple cases in India.

It’s essential to note the controversy surrounding Mr. Naik’s presence in Nigeria, as his teachings have been banned or restricted in several countries due to concerns about their potential to incite violence and hatred towards other religions. His visit raises questions about the wisdom of providing a platform for a figure with such a contentious background in a country grappling with religious extremism and security challenges.

The Sultan of Sokoto, who invited Zakir Naik, has not yet responded to inquiries regarding his awareness of the controversial preacher’s legal status.

Influential Factors in the Naira’s Depreciation Against the US Dollar

Several factors contribute to the devaluation of the naira against the US dollar in Nigeria. These factors include:

    1. Fluctuating Oil Prices: Nigeria’s economy is highly dependent on oil exports. When global oil prices decline, it reduces the country’s revenue, foreign exchange reserves, and puts pressure on the naira’s value.
    2. Foreign Exchange Reserves: The depletion of Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves, often due to servicing external debt, can weaken the naira’s exchange rate.
    3. Exchange Rate Policies: The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) plays a vital role in setting exchange rate policies. Interventions to maintain an official exchange rate, especially when foreign reserves are low, can lead to devaluation.
    4. Inflation: High inflation erodes the purchasing power of the naira, making it less attractive to foreign investors and causing devaluation.
    5. Economic Uncertainty: Political instability, economic uncertainties, and security concerns can deter foreign investments, reducing foreign exchange inflow and leading to naira devaluation.
    6. Global Economic Factors: Events like the COVID-31 pandemic can have a significant impact. The pandemic disrupted global trade, led to a drop in oil prices, and subsequently affected Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings.
    7. Market Speculation: Speculative activities in the foreign exchange market can influence the naira’s value. Speculators betting on future devaluation can contribute to the naira’s decline.
    8. Balance of Trade: An unfavorable balance of trade, where imports significantly exceed exports, can strain the country’s foreign exchange reserves and put pressure on the naira’s value.
    9. Government Policies: Policies related to trade, foreign exchange, and economic management can affect the naira’s value. Decisions like fuel subsidy removal can impact inflation and, by extension, the exchange rate.
    10. Overall Economic Performance: Nigeria’s economic health, including GDP growth, employment rates, and overall economic stability, plays a role in determining the naira’s value in the international market.

These factors collectively contribute to the devaluation of the naira against the US dollar, shaping Nigeria’s exchange rate dynamics.

The exchange rate of the dollar to naira holds great significance as an economic indicator of Nigeria’s performance and stability. This rate fluctuates across different markets, including the CBN, banks, and the black market. While CBN and bank rates are officially regulated, the black market rate is determined by market forces.
