  • Prof. Asagba and Prof. Tonukari Grace Orodje’s Installation as Chancellor

Prof. Asagba and Prof. Tonukari Grace Orodje’s Installation as Chancellor

    By Sanco Ese

It is truly inspiring that over the weekend, our revered monarch, the Orodje of Okpe, was installed as Chancellor and also honored at the Nigeria Military University, Biu, Borno State, with an honorary Ph.D. Among the selected few who accompanied him were Prof. Igbigbi, Prof. Tonukari, and Prof. Sam Asagba – an academic giant and a great son of Okpe Kingdom.

Prof. Sam Asagba is currently a lecturer at Delta State University and is one of the most brilliant, forthright, reliable, honest, courageous, credible, and committed Nigerians. He has served as a Dean, Provost, and the immediate past Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka.

Orodje of Okpe Installs Mike Affe as the Unu-Okpe, the Traditional Prime Minister of Okpe Kingdom

I am honored and delighted to share a few words about this great and profoundly good man who is not only one of the founding fathers of the Osu Governorship movement but also one of those who has stood firmly on his principles, displayed great fidelity, and commitment to the OSU cause. He has shown the world that the people of Okpe/Sapele/Uwvie federal constituency have men and women of courage who are consistent, true to their word, and committed to the principles of fairness and equity.

Unlike other Okpe academicians, throughout the period of the struggle for an Osu Governor, one thing that set him apart was that he never sat on the fence nor showed any form of inconsistency. At the time he joined the campaign for an OSU Governor, not many people could do so. He spoke out even when it was unfashionable and dangerous to do so.

I will never forget how he touched our souls, stirred our spirits, moved our hearts, and provided strength, even when he didn’t know that I was looking up to him.

Today, everybody, both the good, the bad, and the ugly, is singing the same tune that he has been singing for the last four years with a dangerous, misleading, and false sense of entitlement to a cause they betrayed and never believed in right from the onset.

I am so proud that Okpe is blessed with such leaders and elders. With them, there is hope, and as long as the next generation can imbue their spirit of fortitude, courage, faith, honor, and strength, nothing will overcome us, nothing will destroy us, and nothing will overwhelm us.

As the only Okpe man who has ever attained the position of a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Delta State University, Abraka, I wish him more significant opportunities in the service of our people.

If I were ever to use the great Mark Anthony’s words when he saw Julius Caesar’s bleeding and dying body after he was cut short by Brutus and the other Roman traitors, this is the time that it is appropriate to do so. For I can say of Prof. Sam Asagba, as Mark Anthony said of Caesar, “here lies a Caesar, after whom comes no other.”

May I end this brief epistle by saying, I am persuaded that posterity will be kind to Prof. Sam Asagba, and history will never forget his timeless contributions to the socio-economic and political development of the Okpe nation. He will always be a reference point for all that is wholesome and good.

May God bless him, guard him, guide him, and protect him from enemies within and without.

I pray that God grants Prof. Sam Asagba the opportunity to serve Delta State in a higher challenge very soon.

My name is Sanco Ese, I am God’s Pen of Intervention.

Wike Snubs Tinubu’s Intervention in Rivers Crisis, Vows to Fight Fubara to Standstill Even If Heaven Falls

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has made it clear that he will fiercely confront any challenge to his political influence and standing in Rivers. He remains undeterred, stating that he will persist in this battle, no matter the consequences, even if it means defying heavenly odds.

    He said:

“Anybody who knows me knows too well: what I’ll never take is threat. You know I will not agree. If heaven will come down, let heaven come down so that everybody will be at rest,” said Mr Wike.

“Let’s do things right. He said they should bring N20 billion every month; that’s politics. But nobody said this when I was fighting. If you like, accuse me. I won’t even have sleepless nights because, as far as I’m concerned, the right thing must be done.”

The former Rivers governor stated this on Tuesday after the governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the party’s National Working Committee had met in Abuja on Tuesday.

Mr Wike’s latest resolve defied President Bola Tinubu’s intervention in the political tussle between him and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, on Tuesday.

Fubara: I need my base to remain politically relevant – Wike

“In politics, there are lot of internal wrangling. But you’re not going to say that because there are lots of internal wrangling, they’re not going to settle among themselves. I was the instrument. I had every power then to say where things should go,” Mr Wike told journalists. “When things are wrong, you ask questions. It’s a party affair. I don’t feel threatened. I’ll tell the truth and nothing but the truth.”

    The minister added,

“It’s a party affair, party knows how they resolve their own mechanism. It’s not an ethnic affair. Our party is looking into it. That’s what I’ll say. Every politician has his own interests. I don’t want to go into details. All of us are one.”

Rivers House of Assembly lawmakers led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, allies of Mr Wike, had embarked on impeachment proceedings against Mr Fubara and suspended the majority leader, Ehie Edison.

The move was, however, thwarted, as Mr Amaewhule was impeached while the suspended majority leader, Mr Edison, was elected to take over the position from him.

Influential Factors in the Naira’s Depreciation Against the US Dollar

Several factors contribute to the devaluation of the naira against the US dollar in Nigeria. These factors include:

    1. Fluctuating Oil Prices: Nigeria’s economy is highly dependent on oil exports. When global oil prices decline, it reduces the country’s revenue, foreign exchange reserves, and puts pressure on the naira’s value.
    2. Foreign Exchange Reserves: The depletion of Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves, often due to servicing external debt, can weaken the naira’s exchange rate.
    3. Exchange Rate Policies: The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) plays a vital role in setting exchange rate policies. Interventions to maintain an official exchange rate, especially when foreign reserves are low, can lead to devaluation.
    4. Inflation: High inflation erodes the purchasing power of the naira, making it less attractive to foreign investors and causing devaluation.
    5. Economic Uncertainty: Political instability, economic uncertainties, and security concerns can deter foreign investments, reducing foreign exchange inflow and leading to naira devaluation.
    6. Global Economic Factors: Events like the COVID-31 pandemic can have a significant impact. The pandemic disrupted global trade, led to a drop in oil prices, and subsequently affected Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings.
    7. Market Speculation: Speculative activities in the foreign exchange market can influence the naira’s value. Speculators betting on future devaluation can contribute to the naira’s decline.
    8. Balance of Trade: An unfavorable balance of trade, where imports significantly exceed exports, can strain the country’s foreign exchange reserves and put pressure on the naira’s value.
    9. Government Policies: Policies related to trade, foreign exchange, and economic management can affect the naira’s value. Decisions like fuel subsidy removal can impact inflation and, by extension, the exchange rate.
    10. Overall Economic Performance: Nigeria’s economic health, including GDP growth, employment rates, and overall economic stability, plays a role in determining the naira’s value in the international market.

These factors collectively contribute to the devaluation of the naira against the US dollar, shaping Nigeria’s exchange rate dynamics.

The exchange rate of the dollar to naira holds great significance as an economic indicator of Nigeria’s performance and stability. This rate fluctuates across different markets, including the CBN, banks, and the black market. While CBN and bank rates are officially regulated, the black market rate is determined by market forces.

  • Police Brutalize NLC President Joe Ajaero

Police Brutalize NLC President Joe Ajaero

In a shocking turn of events, Joe Ajaero, the esteemed leader of Nigeria’s largest labor union, found himself on the wrong side of the law, subjected to what can only be described as a brutal and degrading ordeal at the hands of the Nigeria police.

Read Also Joe Ajaero, NLC President Arrested Amid Imo State Strike Tensions

The magnitude of this incident is alarming, and what’s equally concerning is the relative lack of response it has garnered.

While the focus may initially seem to be on Joe Ajaero, it is imperative to recognize that the repercussions of this gruesome attack extend far beyond an individual.

Read Also Protesters Storm National Assembly, Demand Immediate Sacking of Tinubu’s Minister

The National Labour Congress (NLC) as a union, a cornerstone of the nation’s labor movement, is under siege, and the consequences could be dire.

In recent years, the NLC has faced criticism for what some perceive as a weakened and compromising stance. However, the arrest and maltreatment of Joe Ajaero should serve as a wake-up call to all, regardless of their opinions on the NLC’s recent trajectory.

To allow this humiliation to go unchallenged would be a grave mistake. The silence surrounding this incident is not a sign of strength; it’s an ominous indication of the shrinking space for civic engagement in Nigeria.

The NLC, with its rich history of advocating for workers’ rights and social justice, has played an essential role in the country’s development. Its ability to champion the rights of the Nigerian workforce and maintain a strong presence in the nation’s civil society landscape is vital for a functioning democracy.

The brutal treatment of Joe Ajaero sends a dangerous message to all voices that dare to speak out against injustice, whether they are labor leaders, activists, or ordinary citizens. It threatens the fundamental principles of democracy, such as freedom of expression and the right to assemble peacefully.

As Nigerians, we must unite in our condemnation of such actions. The arrest and maltreatment of Joe Ajaero should not be brushed aside as just another incident. It is a clear violation of the principles that underpin a democratic society.

To safeguard the civic space in Nigeria and preserve the values of democracy, it is crucial that we demand accountability for this incident, insist on due process, and advocate for the protection of individual rights and freedoms. This is not just about Joe Ajaero; it’s about the future of civic engagement in our beloved country.

As the sun sets on this dark chapter, we must collectively work to ensure that such brutal incidents do not become the norm. The Nigerian labor movement, with its historical significance, deserves better. Our democracy, with its promise of liberty and justice, must prevail.

General Alejandro Zapata, the deputy director of the Colombian National Police, has suggested that individuals potentially involved in the kidnap plot have been identified on security cameras but revealed the complexity of the search given the perpetrators may have crossed over the border.

“We have clarity of people who could have been linked to the event,” he said (via Semana). “When events like this occur, it is generally not spontaneous, there is prior planning, people who drag people to a place, that is, they locate them so that others can arrive, and that is what we are investigating.

We can’t say for sure, but we don’t rule it out either. They may be looking for a chance to escape to that place.

Canonization Process Explained: A Guide for All Saints’ Day

November 1 marks the solemnity of All Saints, more commonly known as All Saints Day, when the Catholic Church commemorates all individuals who have achieved eternal life with God in heaven. While the Catholic Church formally acknowledges thousands of saints, the process of declaring someone a saint has evolved and refined over the centuries, from the earliest days of Christianity to the present.

Early Church’s Local and Bishop-Led Canonization

During the early centuries of the Christian communities, the Church was in its infancy, decentralized, and often subjected to persecution. In these years, formal procedures of the Church were developed somewhat independently.

According to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), there was “no formal canonical process as understood by today’s standards” in the first 500 years of the Catholic Church. It was in the sixth century that the local bishop’s intervention was required for canonization. Local Christians would request their bishop’s involvement in assessing the sainthood of a departed faithful.

The bishop would thoroughly examine the request and the candidate’s biography. If the request was deemed favorable, the bishop would issue a decree, authorize the liturgical cult, and thereby canonize the individual.

As time passed, the process grew more structured. Starting in the 10th century, the bishop would collect eyewitness testimony from those who had known the candidate and witnessed miracles associated with them. The entire petition would then be sent to the Pope, who would make the final decision. The first official papal canonization was that of Swiss bishop St. Ulric in 993, by Pope John XV.

This process remained consistent for several centuries. In the late 1500s, Pope Sixtus V established the Congregation for Sacred Rites, which assisted the Pope in reviewing canonization causes. This process remained largely unchanged until 1917 when the universal Code of Canon Law was promulgated. In 1983, a new promulgation updated the code that is still in effect today.

The Modern Three-Stage Canonization Process for Saints.

The current canonization process in the Catholic Church involves three stages:

Stage One: Church authorities begin by examining the life of a candidate for sainthood. This process typically starts at least five years after the candidate’s death and is initiated at the diocesan or eparchial level. After receiving a petition and obtaining permission from the Holy See, the bishop convenes a tribunal to investigate the candidate’s life or potential martyrdom.

Witnesses are called, and documents related to the candidate are gathered and scrutinized. The diocese then sends its report to the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, where theologians vote on whether the candidate lived a heroic life or suffered martyrdom.

If the vote is favorable, the prefect of the dicastery presents the results to the Pope, who can declare the candidate either Venerable (for a virtuous life) or Blessed (if they were martyred).

Stage Two: A Venerable is beatified when a miracle is attributed to their intercession, which must be proven through a canonical investigation. Upon beatification, a Venerable receives the title of Blessed. This title is automatically granted to a martyr upon confirmation of their martyrdom.

Stage Three: A Blessed is officially canonized when another miracle is attributed to their intercession and occurs after their beatification. Canonization permits the public veneration of the saint by the universal Church.

The most recent saints canonized by the Church are Sts. Artemide Zatti and Giovanni Battista Scalabrini, who were enrolled among the saints by Pope Francis in October of the previous year.

This All Saints Day, as the Catholic Church celebrates the communion of saints, the process of canonization serves as a testament to the enduring recognition of those who have led lives of extraordinary virtue and faith.

The Rivers State Police Command has provided clarification on the recent incident involving the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, during a protest at the state’s House of Assembly complex in Port Harcourt on Monday.

The command explained that the use of water cannons and tear gas was not a deliberate attack on the governor but a measure to disperse protesters and ensure the safety of the governor and the premises.

According to a statement from the state police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, the police received credible intelligence about a group’s intention to cause mayhem at the State House of Assembly. Given the previous incident of arson at the assembly, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations deployed armed police personnel to safeguard the premises.

Upon arrival, the police observed a large group of protesting youths attempting to gain access to the complex, potentially leading to a breach of peace. To control the situation, the police used non-lethal crowd control equipment, including tear gas and water cannons.

However, another group of aggressive individuals later approached the complex, and the police took similar measures. The surprise came when Governor Siminalayi Fubara was found in their midst. The police stated that there had been no prior communication about the governor’s visit, which is the usual protocol for ensuring his safety.

The Deputy Commissioner of Operations quickly took steps to protect the governor and his entourage while they assessed the damage caused by the fire incident at the assembly complex. The police emphasized that their actions were not a deliberate attack on the governor and that their primary role is to protect public officials, especially the Chief Executive and security officer of the state.

The Rivers State Police Command has implemented additional security measures to de-escalate the situation and restore calm in the affected areas.

The incident involved the police using water cannons and tear gas on the governor’s entourage as they tried to access the burnt Rivers State House of Assembly Complex, which had been at the center of a crisis among state lawmakers. The governor accused security agencies of bias and claimed that they had directly shot at him amid the ongoing crisis in the state.
