Ngige: Resident doctors have sense of entitlement — strike threat is absurd

Chris Ngige, the minister of labour and employment, described as “absurd” the demands made by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) in its ultimatum to the federal government.

On Monday, the minister stated this in an interview to Arise TV.

On Saturday, NARD issued a strike threat if the government fails to meet its demands within fourteen days.

The association demanded actionable steps regarding the “upward review” of the consolidated medical salary structure (CONMESS) and payment of resident doctors’ salary arrears.

The body also rejected a bill that would have required physicians and dentists to practise for five years before relocating abroad.

In response to the ultimatum, Ngige stated that the demands demonstrate a “sense of entitlement” and that the government has given resident physicians “everything they want.”

He added that the bill seeking to restrict the migration of health care professionals is a “private member bill” that is beyond the executive’s authority.

“Therefore, if the national association of resident physicians for whom we have been managing their affairs and have provided them with everything they desire,” the minister stated.

“You also requested that a bill be removed from consideration by the national assembly, which is one of the reasons you want to go on strike. How can the government remove a private member bill, which is not even an exclusive bill?

  • Labour Day History and 10 Significance

Labour Day History and 10 Significance

Labour Day is a public holiday celebrated annually on May 1st in many countries around the world, including Nigerian, Canada, the United States, and most European countries. The day honors the contributions made by workers to the development and prosperity of their respective countries.

The origins of Labour Day can be traced back to the late 19th century, during the Industrial Revolution. The working conditions of the time were often dangerous and exploitative, with long hours, low wages, and no job security. Workers began to organize themselves into trade unions to demand better conditions and higher pay. In many cases, these protests turned violent, as workers clashed with police and government officials.

One of the key events in the history of Labour Day was the Haymarket Riot, which occurred in Chicago, Illinois, in 1886. A peaceful demonstration by workers demanding an eight-hour workday turned violent when a bomb was thrown at police, killing several officers. The ensuing violence resulted in the deaths of several workers and the arrest and execution of several labor leaders.

In response to these events, the International Socialist Congress declared May 1st as International Workers’ Day in 1889, in honor of the workers who had lost their lives in the struggle for better working conditions. The holiday quickly spread to other countries, and it became a symbol of the labor movement and workers’ rights.

In the United States, Labour Day was officially recognized as a national holiday in 1894, following the Pullman Strike, which was a nationwide railroad strike that involved over 250,000 workers. President Grover Cleveland signed the legislation making the first Monday in September a national holiday in honor of workers.

Today, Labour Day is celebrated in many countries around the world, often with parades, festivals, and other events. It is an important reminder of the struggles that workers have faced in the past and the ongoing fight for workers’ rights and fair labor practices

    Labour day in  Nigeria 2023

Labour Day in Nigeria, also known as May Day, is celebrated on May 1st each year. The holiday is a celebration of the achievements of Nigerian workers and their contributions to the development of the country.

The history of May Day in Nigeria can be traced back to 1981 when the then military government declared May 1st as a public holiday to commemorate International Workers’ Day. The holiday was initially celebrated only in Lagos, but it later spread to other states in the country.

The celebration of labour Day in Nigeria is marked by parades, speeches, and other events organized by various trade unions and labor organizations across the country. Workers also use the occasion to highlight their grievances and demand better working conditions, wages, and benefits.

Over the years, the Nigerian government has used the occasion of Worker’s Day to make various promises to workers, including the provision of affordable housing, improved healthcare, and better working conditions. However, some workers have criticized the government for not doing enough to improve their welfare and for failing to implement policies and programs that would benefit them.

Despite the challenges faced by Nigerian workers, the celebration of Worker’s Day remains an important event in the country’s history, and it continues to serve as a reminder of the important role that workers play in building a strong and prosperous nation

FG Introduces New Taxes On Beer, Imported Vehicles, Plastics, Others

The federal government has implemented a new set of taxes on alcoholic beverages, imported automobiles, and single-use plastics.

This information was made public in the new Fiscal Policy Measures (FPM) for 2023 and a Circular dated 20 April 2023 signed by Zainab Ahmed, Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning.

Mr. Taiwo Oyedele of PricewaterhouseCoopers disclosed on his official Twitter account the specifics of the new tax regime contained in the new Fiscal Policy Measures (FPM) documents and approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Nigerian government will now charge N75 per litre of imported beer or stout. In 2023, the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, announced that N75 per litre will be levied on “beer and stout, including all alcoholic beverages and beer not made from malt, whether fermented or not.” In 2024, this new excise duty on beer and stout will rise to N100 per litre.

Prior to the implementation of the new rates, the government taxed imported alcoholic beverages at a rate proportional to the estimated value of the goods or transaction in question. There is now a fixed price, not an estimate.

The same excise rate for beer imports will be applied to wine imports. As of 1 June 2023, two percent of the Import Adjustment Tax (IAT) will be imposed on two-litre engine vehicles, while four percent of the IAT will be imposed on four-litre engine vehicles and above.

On April 20, 2023, the Federal Ministry of Finance Budget and National Planning issued a circular (HMFBNP/MDAs/circular/2023FP/04) informing all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies of the new developments.

The Federal Government has also expanded the list of items that cannot be imported into the country.

The Federal Government has revised the list of prohibited imports to include used motor vehicles older than 12 years from the date of manufacture, as well as Paracetamol tablets and syrups, Cotrimozazole tablets and syrups, Metronidazole tablets and syrups, and Chloroquine tablets and syrups.

Folic acid tablets; Vitamin B Complex tablets (excluding modified release formulations); Multivitamin tablets, capsules, and syrups (excluding special formulations); and Aspirin tablets (excluding modified release formulations and soluble aspirin) are also included.

Others include: Magnesium trisilicate tablets and suspensions; Piperazine tablets and syrups; Levamisole tablets and syrups; penicillin/gentamycin ointments; pyrantel pamoate tablets and syrups; intravenous fluids (dextrose, normal saline, etc.); pharmaceutical waste; and mineral or chemical fertilisers containing nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK).

The Federal Government also imposed a 10% Green Tax in the form of an excise duty on Single Use Plastics (SUPs) such as plastic containers, films, and bags.

A 2% Import Adjustment Tax (IAT) has been imposed on motor vehicles with a displacement between 2,000 and 3,999 cc, while vehicles with a displacement greater than 4,000 cc will be taxed at 4%.

Effective 1 June 2023, “vehicles with a displacement of less than 2000 cc, mass transit buses, electric vehicles, and locally manufactured vehicles are exempt.”

Under the Supplementary Protection Measures (SPM) as it relates to the implementation of the ECOWAS Common External Tariff 2022-2026, the circular stated that the changes will take effect on 1 May 2023, subject to a 90-day grace period for importers who opened Form M prior to 1 May 2023.

On the list are rice, woven fabrics, ceramics tiles and sinks, steel, compressed or liquefied gas containers, aluminium cans, washing machines, electric generating sets and rotary converters, smart phones, new and used passenger motor vehicles and electricity metres. The majority of applicable duties remain unchanged from the 2022 FPM rates.

In addition, following the imposition of a five percent excise duty on telecommunication services as mandated by the Finance Act of 2020 and published in the Official Gazette No. 88, Vol. 109 of 11 May 2022, which was approved by the President, a five percent tax will be imposed on mobile telephone services (GSM), fixed telephone services, and internet services – both postpaid and prepaid.

Now, the questions are usually modified. So, this is why I say:

The new  JAMB Exam date for 2023 has been announced.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released a new start date for the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations. (UTME).

    JAMB Exam date 2023.

According to a statement released by the board’s Head of Public Affairs and Protocol, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, the UTME will now begin on April 25, 2023, instead of April 29.

The board has also rescheduled its mock-UTME examination for April 18, 2023, due to technical issues that prevented some candidates from sitting for the previous mock exam on March 30.

The purpose of the mock exam was to gauge the board’s readiness and provide prospective candidates with hands-on experience of the CBT testing environment.

On April 18, candidates who were present and screened for the examination but were unable to sit for it will retake the mock exam. The board has released the results for candidates who passed the practise test on 30 March.

JAMB announces approved dates for 2023 UTME registration and exams

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has approved the January 24-February 14, 2023 registration period for the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) at JAMB Portal.

Tuesday, JAMB’s Head of Public Affairs and Protocol, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, issued a statement containing this information.

Important dates: The board also announced that its optional mock UTME will be administered on March 16, 2023.

He added that the board does not include Direct Entry (DE) registration in its application documents, as DE registration will begin on February 20 and end on April 20, 2023.

    JAMB examination date for 2023

In addition, he stated that the date for the 2023 UTME has been set for April 29, 2023, and that it is anticipated to conclude on May 12, 2023.

Benjamin observed that a service fee of N1,000 is required when registering for a mock examination.

“Candidates are advised that they will be required to pay a service fee of N1,000 to CBT centres for the conduct of mock examinations at the time of registration,” he said.

This is to prevent candidates from expressing interest in sitting for the mock UTME, causing centres to commit personnel and resources, only for them to not show up on the day of the examination.”

He added, however, that this was contingent on the candidate’s interest.

JAMB result Checker portal 2022 login portal news on jamb

He stated, “With the new arrangement, candidates indicate their interest by paying for the mock exam at the time of UTME registration, preventing the centres from incurring a loss regardless of whether candidates attend.”
Creating a profile: He urged prospective students to begin doing so as soon as possible.

“The board advises all candidates who wish to register for the 2023 UTME to immediately begin the creation of their respective profiles (creation of profile code) prior to the formal commencement of the registration process in order to avoid any resulting bottleneck,” he explained.

NASS members must remain vigilant, reject grazing reserve bill – Ortom

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has urged members of the National Assembly to remain vigilant and resist any last-minute attempts to pass legislation that would deprive Nigerians of their God-given lands in favour of pastoralists across the country.

Governor Ortom finds it curious that, since 2016, the Presidency has sent the grazing reserves bill to the National Assembly under various names, and that, despite public outcry, the Presidency remains committed to getting the bill passed.

If the current administration had focused on addressing insecurity in the same way that they have pushed for the passage of a cattle grazing reserves law, the country would be safer for all Nigerians.

The Senate rejected a contentious bill in November 2016 that sought to establish a Grazing Management Agency to ensure the creation of cattle grazing areas across the country.

In 2017, the Federal Government attempted to influence the passage of the National Grazing Routes and Reserves Bill, which adorned the same regalia. Following the alarm raised by some patriotic Nigerians, that bill was also rejected.

Following that, the government introduced the National Water Resources Bill, which had the singular goal of bringing all water sources (surface and underground) and river banks under the control of the Federal Government, a move that drew widespread condemnation from Nigerians.

Pay Attention To Dollar To Naira Black Market Exchange Rate Today May 1, 2023

Ruga, Cattle Colonies, and other programmes were implemented by the Federal Government in order to create settlements for pastoralists in all of the federation’s states. Governor Samuel Ortom was the first to speak out against the draconian bills, according to records.

President Muhammadu Buhari approved a committee’s recommendations in August 2021 to review “with dispatch, 368 grazing sites across 25 states in the country, and to determine the levels of encroachment.” Again, Benue and other states rejected the presidential approval, and the idea died.

We understand that those intent on taking over Nigerians’ ancestral lands to give to pastoralists are looking for an opportunity to quickly pass the bill, which has now been renamed the National Grazing Reserves Council Bill. The proposed law has been in the National Assembly since it was reintroduced, and its sponsors have been trying to find the right time to pass it, sensing the mood and suspicions of the people.

Read Also APC Majority Leader, who was arrested for the deaths of 3 NNPP supporters, joins speakership race

The law, if passed by the National Assembly, will create a Council with the authority to take over land in any part of the country for grazing reserves and pay ‘compensation’ to the land owner(s). Pastoralists will benefit from the usurped land because their animals will have unrestricted access to it.

The National Grazing Reserves Council Bill violates not only the Constitution and the Land Use Act, but it is also a fang of impunity, subjugation, and a deeply rooted conquest agenda against Nigerians. The bill is a direct land grab designed to turn Nigerians into slaves in their own country while serving the selfish and parochial interests of herdsmen.

Governor Ortom encourages National Assembly members to act as true representatives of the people for the sake of posterity, and to remember that the future and unity of this nation are in their hands. He urges federal lawmakers to continue to reject the bill and any other covert attempt to mock millions of innocent Nigerians who have fallen victim to the occupation agenda.

It must be emphasised that the Governor’s position on national issues is motivated by patriotism rather than a personal agenda or gain. He believes in justice, fairness, and equity.

The movement, comprised of numerous civil society and youth organisations, asserted that the Independent National Electoral Commission’s poor performance during the elections had severely damaged the country’s democracy. Additionally, they pledged to name and shame corrupt officials.

Among the movement’s co-conveners were Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, Comrade Shehu Sanni, Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo, Professor Udenta Udenta, Salisu Mohammed, and Olawale Okunniyi.

NLC was represented by President Joseph Ajaero, while Trade Union Congress was represented by General Secretary Nuhu Toro.

According to the head of the NLC, the judiciary has set numerous states and institutions “ablaze with ridiculous decisions” and must respond to certain questions from Nigerians.

He stated, “The judiciary has so many questions to answer, and if they fail to do so within a short period of time, we will create a hall of shame for those judges who create such problems.

This will occur soon. There is a need for the NBA, all arms of the judiciary, bar benches and all to speak out about what is happening in the judiciary and whether or not the judiciary remains the last hope of the common man.

“The fate of the nation is now in our hands. When they tell you to go to court, they are essentially stating that the matter has been resolved. Someone will steal yam and demand court action. On what basis are these assertions made?

This is the level of ridicule that the judiciary has brought upon Nigeria, and as Nigerians, we must all unite to save the judiciary, or there will be no reason to continue going to court.”

JAMB Announces release of UTME results, gives important update

Jamb releases result of 2023 UTME Date.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board announced on Monday that the release of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Board results would begin on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.

This was contained in the minutes of a meeting held at the conclusion of an emergency management meeting held in Abuja over the weekend.

Pay Attention To JAMB result Checker Portal Login with registration number 2023 and SMS

The board noted in the minutes, which were made available to our correspondent on Monday morning, that the delay in the release of results was due to the need to ensure that all necessary screenings were completed.

“On Tuesday, May 2, 2023, the Board will release the results of candidates who have taken the examination thus far.” The Board delayed the release to ensure that all necessary screening was completed, as well as that the mean and standard deviation were reasonably obtained before the release.

These findings will be made public.

“As candidates check their results on Tuesday, May 2nd, 2023, those who sat the examination but had challenges without being aware of such, will not see their results but will instead see their notification for rescheduled examination,” the statement said.

Similarly, the examination body noted that three categories of candidates who missed their exams had their exams rescheduled for mop-ups.

“All candidates who were unable to sit the 2023 UTME within the allotted time due to no fault of their own will be rescheduled to take the examination on Saturday, May 6, 2023.”

“Candidates in these categories are primarily those who were verified at their centres but were unable to sit the examination; those who could not be biometrically verified; and those with mismatched data,” according to the website.

Ejes Gist News Today previously reported that JAMB had rescheduled the 2023 UTME from Tuesday, April 25, 2023 to Tuesday, May 2, 2023.

The board had informed Nigerians that it would conduct the exercise using some novel and innovative methods in order to completely eliminate examination infractions.

“This has been achieved to a large extent because the exercise recorded the fewest reported cases of infractions, but with equally emerging challenges due to human negligence, which resulted in some candidates being unable to sit the examination on the first day.” Despite this, only 80,166 of the 1,586,765 candidates who expressed an interest in taking the exam are still waiting.

“On the first day of the 2023 UTME, a number of candidates in some centres, as well as in some centres on subsequent days, were unable to sit the examination for various reasons.” Though a significant number of them have been rescheduled and have taken the examination, some have yet to do so.

“As part of the decisions reached at the end of an emergency management meeting held on Sunday, 31st April 2023, the Board has fixed Saturday, 6th May 2023, for all categories of candidates who have not sat their examination, as listed below, to take their examination,” the board stated.
