BREAKING: Federal Government Disowns CBN Governor, Emefiele Over Plan To Redesign Naira

On Friday, the Federal Government distanced itself from the proposed redesignation of the Naira by the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.

The Federal Government has disagreed with CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele forty-eight-hours after he declared that the central bank would redesign the nation’s currency on December 15, 2022.

BREAKING: Buhari sacks CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele

If the proposal was put into practice, the nation and its economy would suffer greatly, according to Zainab Ahmad, Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, who denounced the policy.

When Senator Opeyemi Bamidele questioned Zainab about the strategy during the 2023 budget defense debate, Zainab responded and warned CBN of potential repercussions.

Senator Bamidele who had in his question told the Finance Minister that barely two days after announcement of the policy by CBN , repercussion of it on the value of Naira to US dollar was being felt, said, ” Just two days after announcement of the policy , value of Naira to a US dollar has risen from N740 to N788 to a US dollar due to rush in exchange of starched Naira Notes for foreign currencies , particularly dollar.

To me , the policy may be a well conceived one , but the timing going by realities on ground , is very wrong as the Naira may fall to as low as N1,000 to a US dollar before January 31, 2023 fixed for full implementation of the policy.”

While answering the question, the Minister said she is not aware of the policy but only heard of it from the media .

She said, ” Distinguished senators , we were not consulted at the Ministry of Finance by CBN on the planned Naira redesigning and cannot comment on it as regards merits or otherwise .

“However as a Nigerian privileged to be at the top of Nigeria’s fiscal management , the policy as rolled out at this time , portends serious consequences on value of Naira to other foreign currencies.

“I will however appeal to this committee to invite the CBN governor for required explanations as regards merits of the planned policy and rightness or otherwise of its implementation now.”

Recall that CBN Governor Emefiele had on Wednesday said that the apex bank would redesign the country’s currency from 200 Naira denomination to N1,000 notes .

Emefiele said the action was taken in order to take control of the currency in circulation just as he posited that the bulk of the nation’s currency notes were outside bank vaults and that the CBN would not allow the situation to continue.

According to him, the planned policy he added , was in line with Sections 19, Subsections a and b of the CBN Act 2007, upon which the Management of the CBN sought and obtained the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari to redesign, produce, and circulate new series of banknotes at N200, N500, and N1,000 notes.

Security Advisories: Buhari urges security agencies, citizens not to panic

In order to prevent panic, President Muhammadu has urged the nation’s security apparatus and all residents to be on high alert.

The president’s communications assistant, Malam Garba Shehu, said in a statement on Friday in Abuja that Buhari was responding to security warnings that certain embassies in Abuja had issued, advising residents to maintain calm.

According to him, travellers need not be alarmed by the most recent adjustments to the U.S. and UK governments’ travel advisories.

In fact, the travel advise given by the UK and the US to their respective people includes the same caution. Sadly, the threat of terror exists everywhere.

Buhari said the country’s military, police, and other security forces had demonstrated a capability to deal with it, despite the fact that security threats are genuine and have been present in the country for a long time.

The fact that “the majority of our partners, including the United Nations agencies in our midst have not seen the threat as being sufficient to warrant any form of panic or order citizen evacuations,” he claimed, was evidence of this.

The president believes that while being concerned about security, being vigilant and diligent is essential and that responsible members of society avoid situations that cause unnecessarily heightened anxiety.

INEC to publish new voters register in 774 LGAs

In order to purge the nation’s voter rolls in time for the 2023 election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has asked for increased collaboration with CSOs.

This was said by INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu on Thursday in Abuja during the commission’s quarterly meeting with the CSOs.

At the recently finished Continuous Voter Registration, Mr. Yakubu said that 12,298,944 new voters successfully completed their registrations (CVR).

    Related Stories

According to him, a total of 2,780,756 (22.6%) were identified as ineligible registrants and invalidated from the record as a result of double/multiple registrations, underage individuals, and outright fake registrations after a thorough cleaning-up of the data using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS), he said.

In addition to the 84,004,084 voters already registered, he said that once the ineligible registrants were removed from the list, a total of 9,518,188 new voters were added, giving Nigeria a preliminary total of 93,522,272 registered voters.

According to the law, Mr. Yakubu stated, the commission would publish the new register in hard copy at designated locations in each of the 8,809 Registration Areas (Wards) and 774 LGAs located throughout the nation. The commission would also post the entire register online from Saturday, November 12, to Friday, November 25, so that Nigerians could submit claims and objections.

“I will like to appeal to all Nigerians to use the opportunity of the exhibition to review the list and help us clean it further so that the official voter registration for the general elections in 2023 can be created and published,” he said.

The law required that Nigerians assist us, so we are printing 9.3 million copies of the register and displaying it at the wards and local governments across the country. “We played our own part, which was to do the initial cleaning up of the register,” the statement continued.

Let me make the same plea to civil society and Nigerians as a whole: “Please, when we paste the list, check and scrutinize so that if there are still ineligible persons in the register, kindly draw our attention to it so that, at the end of the day, we’ll have a clearer and better register for the election.”

Regarding the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), Mr. Yakubu stated that INEC was working to assure the printing of all the PVCs still needed for new voters as well as those who requested a transfer or a replacement for their lost or damaged cards.

He stated that INEC will inform Nigerians of its strategy to ensure that the PVCs could be picked up in the upcoming days without any issues.

Since the CVR came to an end in July of this year, we have been making efforts to guarantee that residents have a positive experience when they go to pick up their cards, including engaging with civil society organizations on a pilot exercise in the Federal Capital Territory.

“With the help of the FCT and certain civil society organizations, we have been conducting a pilot. We have been receiving different letters from various civil society organizations volunteering to work with the commission to ensure a seamless collecting of the PVCs while we investigate the possibilities of scaling up the FCT pilot for statewide application.

“At this meeting, we’ll talk about the FCT pilot, our work with CSOs, and any other suggestions they may have to make things easier for us.

It is not the INEC election; it is our election. Nigeria is holding elections. We cannot have the kind of credible elections that we all desire unless we band together.

It applies to more than only INEC. “It is for all of us as Nigerians,” he said. “We will provide every piece of information to any sincere person or organization that wants to work with the commission to deliver credible elections in 2023.”

He urged the CSOs to continue their assistance, stating that the commission’s principal objective was to ensure a free and fair election in 2023.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Women’s Trust Fund, Mufuliat Fijabi, spoke on behalf of the CSOs and reaffirmed their dedication to improve the electoral process in Nigeria.

  • Why FG is keeping Nnamdi Kanu despite court ruling — Malami

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has stated that the Federal Government is not inclined to free the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra despite the court order requiring Nigeria to return him to Kenya and pay him N500 million as compensation. This is due to a number of reasons.

Malami stated in an exclusive interview with newsmen yesterday that Nnamdi Kanu’s rendition could not serve as the sole justification for the release of the IPoB leader from other charges related to alleged offences against the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Read Also: Appeal Court reverses David Umahi, Deputy’s sack

Kanu was being held by the government, according to the justice minister, because of four serious problems that came before the court’s decision to clear him in the rendition case.

Nnamdi Kanu’s release or detention depends on the law and the rule of law, according to Malami.

In deciding whether to release or not to release, you must first consider the rule of law, then the public interest and the national interest, then the security situation, and finally, international diplomacy.

Also Read: Elon Musk takes over Twitter, fires executives

“Let me begin by discussing the rule of law. Due to allegations that have been brought against him in court, this person has been granted bail.

A case of a fugitive is established against the background of someone skipping bail to the international community.

“Two, arising out of national security, this is someone who is charged with treason, incitement and overthrow of civil power, murder and assassination of others on account of his incitement, which comes down to matters of criminality and national security.

“Three, because of international diplomacy, this is someone who has launched an attack on a nation, specifically against his own, using the international community or a foreign country.

Also Read: Security Guard Punches Tenant To Death Over Refusal To Pay Rent

“As a result, all of these naturally play a role in deciding what to do. Therefore, if you have established multiple treason, murder, bail-jumping, and other cases through legal channels, the fact that you have actually prevailed in one case as opposed to multiple others that are still pending establishes the fact that case cannot serve as the sole basis for deciding whether you are entitled to be released or not.

Other than the rendition case, which is the only case that has been decided, other cases involving jumping bail, other cases involving inciting the public, other cases involving murder, homicide, among others, and in fact above all, within the context of the rule of law, the right of the federal government to challenge the decision that pertains to rendition, a challenge associated with the appeal.

“So, the straightforward inquiry is whether the federal government’s decision to detain Kanu is justifiable in light of the rule of law, and my response is that it is. This is due to the fact that Kanu has more cases outstanding in addition to the one that has already been resolved.

Malami said in the interview that “there are other numerous treason cases, there are numerous appeals that are pending and yet to be decided, and then there are also international public interest dimensions and the essence of the government is the sustenance of a public and not a personal interest.”

You may recall that Kanu was released by the Appeal Court in Abuja as well as a Federal High Court in the state of Abia on the grounds that he had been detained without cause in Kenya and had been extradited to Nigeria years earlier to face charges there.

The federal government was also fined N500 million by the Federal High Court for the act of rendition, which Kanu had sought as retaliation against the federal government.

  • EFCC breaks silence on Inviting Former President Goodluck Jonathan for Fraud Charge

Why we didn’t invite Jonathan for questioning – EFCC

Shehu Shuaibu, an investigating officer for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, testified before the Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday that the N4.6 billion purportedly put into a Joint Trust account was used to fund the 2015 campaign of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

In his testimony before Justice Daniel Osiagor during the trial of Senator Nenadi Usman, a former minister of finance, Femi Fani-Kayode, a former minister of aviation, and two other defendants for alleged money laundering and other fraud-related offences, Shuaibu made this claim.

He claimed that throughout their investigation, his team from the EFCC’s Special Task Force did not invite former President Jonathan during cross-examination by Usman’s attorney, Mr. Ferdinand Orbih (SAN).

The witness acknowledged that the second defendant, Fani-Kayode, was the organization’s Director of Media and Publicity while the first defendant, Usman, served as the Director of Finance for President Jonathan’s Campaign Organization.

He responded, “No, we did not invite him, since the President was not the one that expended the money,” when asked why he did not ask Jonathan to confirm or deny whether the funds deposited into the Joint Trust account were used for his campaign or not.

He responded, “To the best of my knowledge, I do not know whether those who transferred money into the joint trust account were charged in court or not,” when asked if they had been detained and prosecuted. Since I do not practise law, I cannot speculate as to why they have not yet been charged in court.

The witness further revealed that the funds were moved into the joint trust account after being paid from the State House to the NEA Account.

He stated that Nebolisa Emodi, the Permanent Secretary of State House, had paid him the money and that his team had invited him for questioning but had not brought charges against him.

  • Akinrun stool: Osun Govt defends appointment, says it followed process

Rasaq Adeosun, the special adviser to the governor of Osun State on local government and chieftaincy affairs, has reiterated that the choice of Prince Yinusa Olalekan Akadiri of the Oba-Ara Ruling House as the Akinrun of Ikirun was made by the Ikirun kingmakers.

Adeosun noted that the State government did not violate any existing laws by selecting Akadiri to serve as Akinrun.

Adeosun revealed this while responding to inquiries on a radio current affairs program on Friday in Osogbo. He added that the Kingmakers are responsible for choosing qualified candidates from among the members of the ruling houses, while the government is only responsible for appointing under the Chiefs Law.

Youths in Ikirun Town, Ifelodun Local Government Area, have reportedly protested the State government’s choice to nominate an Akinrun on Wednesday night.

Prince Yinusa Olalekan Akadiri was named the Akinrun of Ikirun by the State Government, while nine other princes were named new obas in their respective kingdoms.

“I would like to emphasize unequivocally that, in accordance with the Chiefs Law in Osun State, the government’s responsibility is to appoint.

“The power of appointment and the power of choosing are completely distinct. The Kingmakers in a town will decide, and it is the State government’s sole duty to ensure that everything is done in accordance with the existing rules governing the appointment of traditional rulers in the State.

“Therefore, selection wasn’t made by the State administration. On November 19, 2021, a king for the town was chosen by the Kingmakers of the town in a 6:1 ratio. There were roughly 18 competitors.

“One of them received six votes, the next received one, and the rest received none.

Since then, we have had to pay attention to additional steps of the procedure. To ensure that everything is done in accordance with the current laws, the Ministry of Justice must be involved.

“All procedures were followed throughout, and it was found there is no legal encumbrance. Just approving is all that the government must do.

“What we did wasn’t a selection; it was just an approval. Since 2021, the Kingmakers have been in charge of choosing candidates, he claimed.

The Special Adviser revealed that although it was the Gboleru Ruling House’s turn to produce the next Akinrun, the Ministry had written and instructed the local government to oversee the choice of the Oba from the ruling house. However, along the way, they had taken legal action against themselves.

“For reasons known to them, they challenged themselves in court, and at the end of the day, the ruling of the Osun State High Court, Ikirun asked the State to advance to the next level since the family, Gboleru Ruling House, that was supposed to produce an Oba was not ready for it,” he said. They had a situation going on.

Divisions existed inside the home. They put themselves to the test. They were unable to resolve their differences when the court ordered them to do so.

He believed that the Gboleru Decision was not prepared to produce the next Akinrun and that the Osun State Government was just following the Osun State High Court’s ruling, which was made in Ikirun, that the monarch should pass to the next ruling house, Obaara.
