‘You Can’t Defeat a Governor Receiving ₦50bn Monthly With Big Stories’ — Dickson Tells NDC Aspirants
Former Bayelsa State Governor and National Democratic Congress (NDC) chieftain, Seriake Dickson, has defended the consideration of financial capacity in selecting candidates for elections, arguing that opposition politicians must understand the financial demands of challenging incumbent governors.
Dickson made the remarks during an interview on Arise News while responding to allegations of manipulation in the NDC’s governorship primaries and explaining the party’s approach to assessing aspirants seeking its tickets.
He maintained that political ambition alone was not enough to guarantee a competitive campaign, insisting that candidates must demonstrate how they intend to mobilise the resources required to challenge governors with access to substantial financial resources.
“You can come to me wearing suit telling me to give you NDC governorship ticket saying you will defeat a sitting governor who receives allocation of N50b monthly,” Dickson said.
Dickson Explains Why Campaign Financing Matters
The former governor argued that discussions about elections often overlook the financial realities of running a campaign, including mobilisation, logistics, political networks and other organisational expenses.
According to him, party leaders have a responsibility to assess whether aspirants understand the challenges involved in contesting against incumbents who enjoy the financial advantages associated with holding public office.
Dickson said asking candidates about their sources of funding was a legitimate part of the selection process, particularly when the opposition seeks to challenge governors from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He questioned how an aspirant with limited financial resources could sustain a competitive campaign against an incumbent reportedly receiving between ₦50 billion and ₦60 billion in monthly allocations.
His comments reflect his position that candidates seeking governorship tickets should present credible plans for financing their campaigns rather than relying solely on political promises.
NDC Not Reserved for Billionaires, Dickson Insists
Despite emphasising the importance of money in election campaigns, Dickson clarified that the NDC was not exclusively a party for wealthy individuals.
He acknowledged that not all candidates in the party possessed enormous personal fortunes, adding that the party could assist aspirants in raising the funds needed for their campaigns.
However, he questioned whether such support would be sufficient for candidates who lacked both the financial resources and the networks required to organise a competitive electoral contest.
His position suggests that the party’s assessment of aspirants involves not only their ambitions but also their ability to develop a workable campaign financing strategy.
The remarks have placed the question of money in politics at the centre of the debate surrounding candidate selection within the opposition party.
Financial Resources and the Challenges Facing Opposition Parties
Campaign financing remains a significant consideration in Nigerian elections, where candidates must fund activities such as voter outreach, transportation, campaign offices, publicity and the coordination of party structures across constituencies.
Opposition candidates may also face the challenge of competing against incumbents who have established political networks and greater visibility arising from their positions in government.
However, the monthly allocations received by state governments are public funds intended for government responsibilities and are not legally the personal funds of governors. Any suggestion that such allocations are available for campaign spending would require evidence.
Dickson’s argument centres on the financial realities he believes opposition candidates must prepare for when challenging sitting governors. His comments do not, on their own, establish that the amounts cited are being used to finance election campaigns.
The debate also raises questions about how political parties can balance financial preparedness with other considerations, including candidates’ experience, public support, integrity and capacity to address voters’ concerns.
Allegations Over NDC Governorship Primaries
Dickson made the comments while addressing allegations of manipulation in the NDC’s governorship primaries.
He defended the consideration of aspirants’ financial capacity as part of the party’s candidate selection process, arguing that those seeking tickets should be able to explain how they would fund their campaigns.
The allegations surrounding the primaries and the party’s selection procedures remain separate from Dickson’s argument about campaign financing. Further details would be needed to independently establish the specific claims of manipulation and the party’s response to them.
Ultimately, Dickson’s remarks highlight the tension between political ambition and the financial demands of electoral competition in Nigeria, while raising broader questions about campaign funding, party nominations and the role of wealth in determining who can compete for public office.
