US Court Acquits Air Peace Boss, Fines Mayfield $4,000 Is Disinformation

Lagos, Nigeria – Claims circulating that the United States court has acquitted Allen Onyema, Chief Executive of Air Peace, and fined former staff Ebony Mayfield $4,000 on October 22, 2024, are false.

Ejes Gist News confirms that the story, which has been republished by Business Day Nigeria, actually refers to a ruling that took place on October 30, 2022, and has no connection to the current charges against Onyema.

In what appears to be a case of deliberate disinformation, Business Day deliberately reported the 2022 court ruling as fresh news in October 2024. Business Day Nigeria intentionally copied and pasted the news article from online sources and republished it as recent news to divert attention from the new allegations against Allen Onyema, CEO of Air Peace.

This misleading report comes after reputable platforms such as The Guardian and Africa Daily News accurately covered the same story two years ago, stating that the US District Court in Atlanta had cleared Onyema of business fraud charges.

What Really Happened in 2022

On October 30, 2022, the US court ruling exonerated Onyema after a thorough investigation by multiple American agencies. The case involved allegations around Letters of Credit used for the purchase of aircraft for Air Peace. The court found that no American bank had suffered any losses, as falsely claimed in earlier reports. However, Ebony Mayfield, a former administrative staff at Springfield Aviation Company, was fined $4,000 and placed on probation.

According to a statement from the law firm Augustine Alegeh & Co., Mayfield had limited knowledge of the transactions in question. She pleaded guilty to one count in the indictment, leading to her minimal sentencing, which is regarded as the lowest possible under US federal law. The firm also clarified that Air Peace never took loans from any American bank and that Mayfield was never involved in any fraudulent activity.

Business Day Nigeria’s Inaccurate Report

Despite the facts of the 2022 case being well-documented, Business Day Nigeria deliberately republished the old story as if it were a new court ruling.

US Court Acquits Air Peace Boss, Fines Mayfield $4000

The news outlet failed to verify the date and details of the ruling, which resulted in the dissemination of false information suggesting that Onyema had recently been acquitted in a fresh legal case.

It is important to note that the current legal charges facing Onyema in 2024 are entirely separate from the 2022 case. The 2022 court ruling has no bearing on the ongoing legal proceedings, and the misreporting by Business Day has caused unnecessary confusion.

Ejes Gist News’ Investigation

A thorough fact-check by Ejes Gist News confirms that the October 2022 ruling stands, and the recent claims by Business Day  Nigeria are incorrect. There is no fresh judgement in Onyema’s favour in October 2024, as the outlet falsely claimed.

The ongoing legal issues surrounding Onyema remain unresolved and have no connection to the case settled two years ago.
