Man Allegedly Stabs Lawyer For Assisting Wife File Divorce Suit Against Him In Ondo

A 40-year-old lawyer, Abayomi Oladire, has been reportedly stabbed by his client’s husband, Kunle Kuteyi, for assisting his wife to file a divorce suit against him.

The lawyer was stabbed in various parts of his body with a broken bottle by the suspect who accosted him while on his way to his sister’s baby naming ceremony in Ondo West Local Council of Ondo State.

According to sources in the area, Kuteyi had accused Oladire of allegedly having an affair with his wife to the extent of helping her file for divorce against him.

A resident in the area, who gave his name as Seyi, stated that after the suspect fled the scene of the crime, the victim, who was bleeding profusely, was rescued by sympathisers who took him to the hospital for treatment.

He said: “We saw the two standing together, and later the suspect hugged the victim and pushed him away. The next thing we saw was the suspect bringing out a broken bottle and starting to stab the victim.”

While recounting what happened, the victim said: “The wife of the suspect brought a judgement to me and said her husband was ordered to pay N2 million by the court to a complainant in a case instituted against them. After going through the judgement, I observed that both the husband and wife were asked to pay N2 million each, and I explained this to her.

“She went to the complainant’s lawyer and paid the said amount. Then, she later asked me to prepare divorce papers because her husband had lied to her about the case. When I prepared the divorce papers, she later came back to me, that she was no longer interested because her husband’s family had intervened and begged her to forgive him.

“I told her that I would inform the judge on the next adjournment date. On the day of the incident, I was going to my sister’s baby naming ceremony when I saw the suspect. He said he had been looking for me because I prepared divorce papers for his wife.

“He accused me of dating her and of preparing a divorce letter for her. But I explained to him that his wife had told me she was no longer interested in the divorce and that we were going to withdraw the case on the next adjournment date.

“The suspect hugged me and bit me on the jaw, then brought out a broken bottle and started stabbing me. All I could do was guard myself to prevent him from stabbing me in the neck or other dangerous parts of my body.

“In the course of performing my legal duty by preparing a divorce for his wife, the suspect attempted to kill me by stabbing me viciously. He is walking freely in the town, and all the police stations in Ondo can’t arrest him.”

When contacted, the police command disclosed that the suspect is on the run but will soon be apprehended.

Nasarawa ASUP Joins National Protest, Condemns New Scheme Of Service

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) at the Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic in Lafia, Nasarawa State, have joined a nationwide protest against the newly introduced Scheme of Service (SOS) for Polytechnic staff by the Federal Government.

The national leadership of ASUP issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to suspend the implementation of the SOS or face industrial action.

In response, the Nasarawa ASUP members held a peaceful protest in Lafia, expressing their grievances over the new scheme.

Dr. Illah Obadiah, Chairman of the ASUP at Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic, addressed journalists after the protest, which lasted over an hour, criticizing the new scheme, and stating that it represented a severe threat to the polytechnic system.

“The document recently released by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) signifies a total suffocation of the polytechnic system.

“The introduction of National Skill Qualifications as a mandatory condition for academic staff career growth is unjust,” Obadiah stated.

He further condemned the new requirements, which he believed unfairly discriminated against Higher National Diploma holders in favour of degree holders for lecturing positions.

“A company that discriminates against its products in the manner NBTE has done is a company yet to be known anywhere in the world,” he added.

Obadiah also pointed out contentious requirements for the appointment of registrars, bursars, chief librarians, and the underrepresentation of technologists as non-teaching staff within the new scheme.

He labeled the entire document as an attack on career progression for polytechnic lecturers.

ASUP vowed not to accept the new scheme, which requires 26 years for lecturers to reach the highest level in the polytechnic, compared to 18 and 20 years for their counterparts in universities and colleges of education.

The protest in Nasarawa is part of a larger movement by ASUP chapters across the country, all standing in solidarity against the Federal Government’s new Scheme of Service.

LG Autonomy: Supreme Court Judgement Will Enhance Grassroots Development – NNPP Chieftain, Ajadi

A chieftain of New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo has declared that the recent Supreme Court judgement on local government autonomy will help to attract grassroots development across the country.

Oguntoyinbo said the judgement would also help to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and enhance better livelihood of the masses across the country.

The NNPP chieftain said this in a statement made available to DAILY POST on Wednesday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

He, however, called on Nigerians to watch out for the governors who may want to use the backyard way to muscle local governments.

“We should keep our eyes on the governors so that they will not go behind the scenes in controlling the finances of the local governments.

“Local governments chairmen should be bold to ensure their freedom from the governors having been protected by the law.

“I also commended the President Bola Tinubu administration for taking up the challenge to curtail the governors’ muscling of the local governments finances.

“The Attorney General’s bold decision has saved the country from the state governors excesses”

“I maintained for a long time that it was undemocratic for the state governments in the country to continue to erode the powers and functions of Local Government with the introduction of the caretaker administrative system.

“Its introduction in a full democratic setting is an aberration to the system of government the country is operating,” he stated.

Aiyedatiwa Dares FG, Directs Transition Committees To Resume In LGs, LCDAs

Despite the Supreme Court judgement that granted financial autonomy to the 774 local government councils in the country, the Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has directed the newly appointed transition committees to resume in the 18 local government areas and 33 Local Council Development Areas, LCDAs, of the state.

According to the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Amidu Takuro, who gave the directive on behalf of the governor, the move became imperative in order to avoid creating a vacuum.

The state government, through the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in the state, Kayode Ajulo, had earlier justified the appointment, stressing that the governor acted within his constitutional powers.

Aiyedatiwa had a few days ago appointed 357 members to the transition committees, shortly after an Ondo State High Court nullified the creation of the 33 LCDAs, after which the apex court gave a judgement that fiscal allocation must only be made to councils with elected chairmen.

However, Takuro, who met with the transition committees, stated that several states, including Ondo, are affected by the Supreme Court’s verdict, emphasising the need for compliance with electoral laws.

The Commissioner maintained that, upon appointment by the governor, the transition committees became operational immediately without a necessary formal inauguration.

He added that implementing the Supreme Court judgement required procedural requirements as well as ongoing negotiations among governors at a scheduled meeting.
