Sultan sights new moon, declares Friday Eid-el-fitri

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has officially declared the sighting of a new moon.

 

The declared Friday, as the Sallah day (Shawwal 1) for Muslim faithful in Nigeria.

On Thursday evening, the Nigerian Muslim leader disclosed the announcement from his palace in Sokoto, located in the North West region of Nigeria.

According to Abubakar, the decision was made following the confirmation of the sighting of the crescent of Shawwal.

Muslims in Nigeria have been observing the Ramadan fasting, which is considered the fourth pillar of Islam, for the past 29 days. This is in line with the global practise of Muslims during this period.
