The Senate has attributed the recent suicide bombings in Gwoza town, Borno state, to a failure of intelligence by security forces. This was disclosed by Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, during a plenary session on Wednesday, July 3.

Akpabio made the statement while contributing to a debate on a motion about the incident, which was sponsored by the Senate’s chief whip, Mohammed Ali Ndume.
In his lead debate, Ndume pointed out that the Mandara Mountains, Sambisa Forest, and the Lake Chad region remain strongholds for terrorists.
He stressed that these areas continue to serve as havens for insurgents, contributing to the persistent threat of terrorism in the region.

The Senate, in its resolutions, urged the Federal Government to instruct the military to rethink its conventional strategies for combating insurgency and other crimes. The lawmakers advocated for the deployment of modern technology and scientific tactics in the fight against terrorism.
The senators noted that relying solely on traditional methods, such as the deployment of troops, has not been effective. They observed that terrorists are employing non-conventional tactics to kill Nigerians and disrupt their livelihoods, indicating a need for a more sophisticated and innovative approach to security operations.
