Teacher in Serious Trouble After Student Dies Following 162 Frog Jumps, 24 Cane Strokes.
A student of Obada Idi-Emi High School in Imeko Afon Local Government Area, Ogun State, identified as Ariyo, has reportedly died following alleged severe corporal punishment administered by a teacher. The incident took place on 15 October 2024, after Ariyo allegedly made a comment about a dustbin that a teacher had brought to his class.
According to information shared by activist Adetoun on social media, the teacher had instructed the class not to break the dustbin, to which Ariyo reportedly responded that the item had been bought with students’ funds. The remark reportedly angered the teacher, who then informed the school principal, leading to Ariyo receiving disciplinary action.
The punishment reportedly involved 24 strokes of the cane and 162 frog jumps, administered under the principal’s instruction. During this process, Ariyo reportedly collapsed. Witnesses claimed that the teacher and other school staff present delayed in taking him to the hospital. When Ariyo was eventually taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Idi-Aba, he was pronounced dead on 25 October 2024.
A police source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident. The source explained that the police intervention was necessary to manage tension within the community in the wake of Ariyo’s death.
