Popular Lawyer Exposes Tinubu’s Lies on Ways and Means Debt in His Independence Speech

Opatola Victor, the counsel representing plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the Federal Government, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and the Ministry of Finance, has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu for allegedly making false claims during his Independence Day address. Victor stated that Tinubu’s declaration that the “Ways and Means” debt had been cleared was misleading.

Victor emphasized that the over N30 trillion debt remains unresolved and continues to burden Nigeria’s economy. He clarified that the debt was merely securitized, converting the Federal Government’s debt into public debt that Nigerians must now repay.

He criticized the government for using technical language to mislead citizens and called for greater transparency and accountability in the management of Nigeria’s debts. Victor urged officials to stop making “barefaced lies” and obscuring the nation’s financial struggles with jargon.
