Nigeria has been hit by another nationwide blackout following the collapse of the national grid, marking the third occurrence in less than a week.

The latest collapse took place at around 9 a.m. on Saturday, leaving the grid unable to transmit any electricity, as confirmed by Ejes Gist News. This disruption follows a brief restoration two days prior, further aggravating the nation’s ongoing power challenges.

The incident represents the eighth grid failure in 2024, with three such collapses happening within the past week alone. Despite the ongoing crisis, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has not yet issued an official statement on the cause of the latest outage.

Reports indicate that the blackout has affected numerous states, plunging households and businesses into darkness once again. Efforts to restore power are currently underway in collaboration with key stakeholders, as noted by Ikeja Electric and other distribution companies (DisCos). The recurring nature of these outages has heightened public frustration over the country’s persistent power instability.

Background on the National Grid Issues

The frequency of grid collapses underscores the fragility of Nigeria’s power infrastructure. The country’s electricity sector has faced longstanding challenges, even after the 2013 privatisation of power generation and distribution aimed at improving efficiency. However, grid failures continue to disrupt power supply, compelling businesses to rely heavily on generators.

The recent series of outages has prompted calls for significant reforms, with some stakeholders advocating for the privatisation of the national grid or a shift towards state-level power transmission to alleviate the burden on the central system and enhance stability.
