Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the governor’s chief press secretary, highlighted that Makinde had already pledged to pay whatever the national minimum wage would be during the 2024 Workers Day celebration. Currently, Oyo State pays a minimum wage of N30,000 plus an additional N25,000 wage award, totalling N55,000. Olanrewaju assured that the state would have no difficulty meeting the new wage requirement.

Other Governors Yet to Decide

While these governors have made clear their intentions to implement the new minimum wage, many others remain undecided. Discussions and consultations are ongoing in several states as governors assess their financial capabilities and other logistical considerations before committing to the new wage.

Additional Developments

In a related development, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has denied reports suggesting that he proposed a minimum wage of ₦80,000 for state and local government workers. Nelson Chukwudi, the governor’s chief press secretary, dismissed these reports as “unverified claims” and “fake news,” emphasizing that such information is aimed at misleading the public and civil servants.

The endorsement of the new N70,000 minimum wage is a far-reaching measure for bettering the lots of Nigerian workers. While some governors have shown the willingness to pay, others are yet to take their stand. All expectations now rest on how these commitments will be upheld, and how workers all over the country reap the benefits accruing from this new wage regime.
