Ministry of Livestock Development has been created.

Tinubu has created the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development. The announcement was made today, July 9 at the State House during the inauguration of the Renewed Hope Livestock Reform Implementation Committee. No minister has been appointed yet.

 

The ceremony was attended by bigwigs including Vice President Kashim Shettima, SGF George Akume, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila and others.

 

This comes after President Tinubu approved the creation of a Presidential Committee on September 15, 2023 to reform the livestock industry and find lasting solutions to the herders/farmers conflicts in Nigeria. The committee was set up following a report from the National Conference on Livestock Reforms and Mitigation of Associated Conflicts in Nigeria.

What will the Ministry of Livestock Development do? 

The Ministry of Livestock Development will focus on various aspects of the livestock sector to increase its productivity, sustainability and overall contribution to the economy. Here are some of what it will do:

Functions of the Ministry of Livestock Development:

Policy Formulation and Implementation:

Develop and implement policies to grow the livestock sector.

Create strategic plans and guidelines to improve livestock production and management.

Conflict Resolution:

Address and mediate conflicts between herders and farmers, find sustainable solutions to reduce clashes.

Implement strategies to mitigate conflicts and promote peaceful coexistence.

Livestock Health and Welfare:

Ensure the health and welfare of livestock through veterinary services, disease control and management programmes.

Promote the use of modern technologies and best practices in livestock care.

Research and Development:

Encourage research and development in livestock breeding, nutrition and management practices.

Collaborate with academic and research institutions to innovate and improve livestock productivity.

Extension Services:

Provide extension services to educate farmers and herders on best practices in livestock farming.

Facilitate access to training and resources for capacity building in the livestock sector.

Infrastructure Development:

Develop and improve infrastructure related to livestock farming, grazing reserves, water points and veterinary clinics.

Improve transportation and market access for livestock products.

Economic and Market Development:

Promote commercialization of livestock farming to increase its contribution to the economy.

Support value chain development and market access for livestock products.

Sustainability and Environmental Management:

Implement sustainable practices in livestock farming to minimize environmental impact.

Promote the use of eco-friendly technologies and practices in livestock management.

Regulation and Quality Control:

Ensure standards and regulations in livestock production and processing.

Monitor and regulate the quality of livestock products to meet safety and health standards.

Collaboration and Partnerships:

Work with international organizations, NGOs and the private sector to develop the livestock sector.

Engage with stakeholders at all levels to develop and implement effective livestock development programmes.

    We need to have ranches as in the civilized climes where you don’t see live stocks roaming our street and farm land, destroyinh farms and killing of innocence farmers It will be a failure if we still allow traditional herders movement as in the old days.
