Eyewitnesses described the horrifying moment when the building suddenly gave way, casing wide-spread panic as students got buried under the debris. The collapse, describable as sudden and catastrophic, has cast a wave of fear and uncertainty among the local community.
Rescue operations began immediately to free the trapped students. Emergency response teams, comprising the Nigerian Police and Army, arrived quickly at the scene to coordinate rescue operations. Their activities were very coordinated in ensuring more consistencies and effective control of the pandemonium, thereby searching for survivors.
Despite the prompt response from the rescuers, it is never known how many students might be in a hopeless situation. Other rescue workers meticulously went through the rubble with hope of finding and rescuing the students under it. It is not yet clear on what might have caused the collapse, though from the preliminary investigations it shows the building structure was the primary cause of this collapse.
Saturday’s incident again raised an alarm over incessant building collapse in the country, with many stressing the engagement of quacks in building construction. On its part, the Plateau State government expressed deep concern over the Sunday incident. In a statement, Governor Simon Lalong assured that full-fledged investigation will be undertaken to get the cause of the collapse to avert future re-occurrence and to help the affected families. He also congratulated the emergency rescue teams for their quick response.
Parents and relatives of the students who are trapped have arrived, gathered, and are, in turns, anxious to get information about their loved ones. Prayers are all over for those still trapped, for safety and a quick recovery process.
Now the accident had just shown it—a dire need for safe building controls and regular mechanisms in place to protect and allow the students and staff to study in a secure environment. The community and the whole country are praying and hoping that the outcome will be positive in the time that the rescue operation will have continued.
We will continue to update on the number of casualties and the progress with the rescue operation as things evolve. Many thoughts and many prayers go out to the students, their families, and the wider Busa Buji community during this tough time.
