Breaking: Labour Union rejects FG’s fresh N60,000 minimum wage offer, insists on N494k

Negotiations for Nigerian Workers’ New Minimum Wage Hit Major Roadblock. 

Abuja, May 28 – The ongoing negotiations for a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers have hit another significant roadblock just days before the May 31 deadline. Labour leaders have once again rejected the federal government’s latest proposal for a new minimum wage.

During a meeting held on Tuesday, May 28, the organized labour, which includes the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), turned down the government’s offer of ₦60,000. This follows a series of rejections of previous proposals of ₦48,000, ₦54,000, and ₦57,000 by the labour leaders.

Meanwhile, the organized labour has slightly adjusted its previous demand, lowering it from ₦497,000 to ₦494,000. This adjustment comes after an initial proposal of ₦615,000 was reduced in earlier negotiations.

A member of the Tripartite Committee involved in the negotiations revealed these updates during the ongoing discussions. Despite efforts to reach a consensus, the committee remains deadlocked, raising concerns about meeting the imminent deadline.

Labour unions have been mobilizing their members for potential nationwide protests if the federal government fails to agree on a new minimum wage by the May 31 deadline. The situation underscores the urgent need for resolution to avoid further industrial actions and unrest.
