ASUU’s Dismay: Federal Government’s Two-Month Salary Release Underwhelms

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed dissatisfaction with the Federal Government’s disbursement of two months’ salaries out of the seven and a half months that were withheld.

President Bola Tinubu had approved the release of four of the eight-month withheld salaries in October 2023, a measure taken during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari when a ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy was enforced due to an eight-month strike by ASUU in 2022.

However, recent reports from Ejes Gist News indicate that some union members have begun receiving truncated two-month salaries from the outstanding seven and a half months.

During a press conference in Abuja on Monday, ASUU Abuja zonal coordinator, Comrade Salahu Mohammed Lawal, expressed disappointment, stating that the two-month salary payment falls short of the union’s expectations.

He remarked, “This is far below the expectation of the union and further weakens the morale of our members and the union’s trust in government promises. We use this medium to call on all that are involved in this inglorious act to do the needful with regards lecturers’ withheld salaries as there is nothing more to prove.”

Lawal urged the federal government to fulfill its obligations by concluding, signing, and immediately implementing the Prof. Nimi Briggs Committee on Renegotiated Agreement, along with promptly paying all withheld salaries, promotion arrears, and Earned Academic Allowances (EAA).

He added, “It is obvious that the Nigerian government is known for not fulfilling their promises as Federal and State governments are owing various allowances and arrears all over our campuses.

The promised payment of arrears of Earned Academic Allowances (EAAs) which is captured in the 2023 budget has not been paid.

Lawal also called on the federal and state governments to halt the proliferation of universities, emphasizing that while existing institutions lack adequate funding, new ones are continually being established, undermining the integrity of the university system.

In an Instagram post on Monday, Seyi Tinubu, who previously showcased a Richard Mille RM 055 luxury watch valued at $550,000 or N825 million, appealed to Nigerians to support President Bola Tinubu’s government. He quoted his father, saying, “There is no joy in seeing the people of this nation shoulder burdens that should have been shed years ago. I wish today’s difficulties did not exist. But we must endure if we are to reach the good side of our future.”

Seyi Tinubu used hashtags such as #HaveFaithinHim, #NigeriaisinGreatHands, #OurGenerationwillYieldthefruitsofthishardship, #IStandwithOurPresident, #RenewedHope, and #NigeriaismyHome to rally support for his father.

However, his plea faced criticism from some Instagram followers who questioned whether faith in the government would meet their basic needs. One user, @ololade, asked, “Na faith we go use buy foodstuffs and pay bills?” Another, @empresstok, expressed skepticism, stating, “How far are u enduring? You can say that to the masses cos you are not in their shoes.”

This statement comes after Seyi Tinubu was previously criticized for using a presidential jet to attend a polo match in Kano in 2023, a move that stirred controversy during a period of economic challenges for Nigerians.

While Seyi Tinubu’s appeal for support unfolded on social media, protests erupted in Ibadan over the high cost of living, with demonstrators expressing discontent with President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Similar protests have occurred in various states, including Niger, Kano, Osun, and Lagos, as citizens voice concerns about hunger and economic hardships.

Over the past nine months, staple food prices have surged by almost 100%, exacerbated by inflation triggered by the removal of the petrol subsidy and the floating of the naira, both initiated by President Bola Tinubu. These policy shifts have led to a significant increase in petrol prices and a decline in the value of the naira against the dollar in the parallel market.

“My consultations across the length and breadth of the Southwest and with leaders in the Diaspora shows that while many of our leaders see nothing wrong in President Bola Tinubu receiving criticism over the pains Nigerians are going through following the policy reforms embarked upon by his administration, they are, however, surprised that certain elements in the North have been hiding under the issue of the policy reforms to openly make politically charged, ethnically insensitive, and provocative statements aimed at inciting the Nigerian public against the Tinubu administration and plunging Nigeria into civil strife,” Famuyibo stated.

He urged those making threatening statements against President Tinubu to refrain from the politics of provocation and incitement influenced by a “born-to-rule” mentality. Famuyibo called for denouncement of what he termed as “self-serving, perfidious, insidious, provocative, and inciting utterances” by all right-thinking Nigerians.

Last week, some northern leaders had decried the economic hardship in the country, expressing their inability to continue prevailing upon the youths to be patient. The situation remains tense as the nation grapples with economic challenges and heightened political rhetoric.

“We want to make Nigeria a net exporter of technology talents, and by net exporter, we don’t mean that people necessarily live abroad because, within the technology space, you can now work remotely,” Tijani explained.

He continued, “I have been part of the tech space for the last 15 years as well. The current development in the tech startup space is being driven by less than 10,000 technical talents. The almighty Andela, a well-known startup that provides training, does not train up to 10,000 people in Nigeria, yet they have been quite successful in helping to strengthen that ecosystem.

“So, if where we are today is being built by less than 10,000, imagine when we train talents. Talent is the prerequisite for our digital economy. When we train people, they can build, and we can export. India did it; it is nothing new. India was the source of technology talents for many years; it is our time because we have everything it takes to get there.”

The Minister emphasized the significance of academic institutions engaging in research, highlighting the government’s substantial investment in this area.

Tijani revealed that within the initial three months of taking office, the ministry introduced a research funding program that has supported 45 Artificial Intelligence projects.

He further stressed the critical need for funding in AI projects due to the rapid advancement of this technology, warning that a government’s readiness would be questioned if not prepared within the next 12 to 15 months.

Passport Plea: Nigerians Urge Federal Government for Passport Printers in New York

Nigerians in New York have once again appealed to the Federal Government to provide passport production printers to the Nigeria Consulate, enhancing seamless passport services in the U.S.

This call emerged during a virtual 12th Town Hall Meeting hosted by the Consulate for the Nigerian Community under its jurisdiction. The New York Jurisdiction includes 20 states, such as Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Nebraska, Ohio, and North Dakota, among others.

During the meeting’s question-and-answer segment, concerns were raised about the Federal Government’s decision to have only one passport production centre in the U.S., situated in Washington, DC.

Nigeria has three missions in the United States: the Consulates-General of Nigeria in New York and Atlanta, and the Embassy of Nigeria in Washington, DC.

While the embassy in Washington DC serves as the sole passport production centre, the consulates collect biometrics and forward them for passport production.

Nigerians questioned why two passport production printers were allocated to a centre covering 10 states, while none were designated for the New York Consulate, covering 20 states, with the highest number of applicants across the United States.
