  • UNIZIK Crisis: My Appointment Not Voided, I’ll Assume Work Tuesday – VC Odoh

UNIZIK Crisis: My Appointment Not Voided, I’ll Assume Work Tuesday – VC Odoh

The newly appointed Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof Benard Odoh has denied that his appointment has been voided.

Odoh in a press release issued by his personal media assistant, Mr Charles Otu insisted that his appointment passed through the stipulated guidelines and that he would assume office on Tuesday.

Recall that the Federal Ministry of Education in a letter signed by one Mrs R. G. Ilyasu on behalf of the Permanent Secretary claimed it had declared the appointment as null and void.

But Otu in a statement he signed on behalf of Odoh and made available to DAILY POST insisted that due process was meticulously observed throughout his appointment as the Vice-Chancellor, by the university’s governing council.

He said: “Based on Nigeria’s extant laws, the Ministry of Education only oversees general educational standards across the nation, but does not have the legal power to direct or control the daily decisions of a university council, including who should be appointed as Vice-Chancellor.

“The institution has rightly stated that all its actions were informed and conform with the statutory requirements set forth in the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Act, Cap 139 (as amended), LFN 2004.

“The Registrar who doubles as the Secretary to the Council had replied that the actions of the Council were in total conformity with the provisions of Section 6 (a) of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Standing Orders of the Governing Council which stipulates that the quorum requirements which mandates the presence of five members, including at least one of the following: The Vice-Chancellor or his Deputy, one appointee of the Visitor and one appointee of the Senate.

“For further clarification, the attention of the general public must be drawn first and foremost to the fact that our extant laws clearly specify the roles of the Governing Council of a tertiary institution vis-a-vis those of the Visitor and the parent’s Ministry of Education.

“In Nigeria, the university governing council plays a unique and critical role in the administration and governance of universities.

“It’s a special body that has been legally granted the authority to oversee the university’s operations, including making key decisions about policies, finances, and appointments—such as choosing a vice-chancellor (VC).

“This council is designed to function independently, separate from direct control by outside bodies, including the Federal Ministry of Education.

“Therefore, when the Council reaches a decision, such as appointing a new Vice-Chancellor (VC), (as it has done in the instant case of UNIZIK), it communicates this decision to the Ministry as a form of official notice. This is a requirement for transparency and coordination, not for approval or control.

“As a matter of fact, the Nigerian law recognizes university councils as autonomous bodies with the right to govern their institutions independently.”

He described the level of opposition from those whose candidates lost out in contests as unhealthy and distracting.

He said some of the suspected sponsors of these falsehoods that have been flying day and night since the official appointment now seem to be taken too far.

He urged members of the university community to give peace a chance while stating that as announced earlier by the university, he would assume work on Tuesday and this will be commemorated with a Catholic mass and blessing of his office by a Catholic Bishop.

  • Ministerial Nominees, Families Arrive Aso Rock For Swearing-In

The newly appointed ministers have arrived at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja for their swearing-in.

The Senate cleared the nominees last week following a screening in Abuja.

The new ministers were appointed after President Tinubu reshuffled the cabinet following calls for a rejig.

Tinubu sacked five ministers, nominated seven others, and forwarded their names to the Senate for confirmation. He also re-assigned ten ministers to new portfolios.

According to Channels TV, the ministerial nominees are seated at the Council Chambers in the Presidential Villa, waiting to begin the ceremony.

While the Chamber is not yet filled, other ministers and dignitaries are expected at the venue.

Recall that the presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, said in a Sunday statement that the ministerial nominees would be screened on Monday.

He said, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will swear in the new seven ministers tomorrow Monday. The Ministers are Dr Nentawe Yilwatda – Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction; Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi – Minister of Labour & Employment; Bianca Odinaka Odumegwu-Ojukwu – Minister of State Foreign Affairs.

“Others are Dr Jumoke Oduwole – Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment (Trade and Investment), Idi Mukhtar Maiha – Minister of Livestock Development; Yusuf Abdullahi Ata – Minister of State, Housing and Urban Development and Dr Suwaiba Said Ahmad – Minister of State Education.”

Tinubu’ll Be A Saint, Next Nigerian President Worst – Aisha Yesufu

Sociopolitical activist Aisha Yesufu has said President Bola Tinubu’s supporters would ensure a worse president succeeds him.

Yesufu stated that Tinubu’s supporters would ensure his successor canonizes him and makes him a saint.

She noted that former presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari cannot be described as good leaders.

Posting on X, she said, “Is Buhari now a competent leader because Tinubu is a worse disaster? Jonathan cannot be a competent leader because Buhari became a disaster!

“The foolishness of threatening people who had the guts to change a failing and callous leader because the person that replaced him became a disaster is beyond comprehension.

“Don’t worry! Those supporting Tinubu today will do anything to ensure someone worse than Tinubu takes over so they can canonize Tinubu and make him a saint.

“The biggest problem we have had is citizens’ refusal to hold those they voted for accountable. They wait for the national leader to do everything for them without holding that person accountable. What a naive and cowardly thought!

“Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Anyone who comes in without being checkmated by the people will go rogue in one way or another.

“There are many people who no longer want to vote for anyone, so nobody will say they are the ones that brought disaster! What nonsense!

“Slowly mentally depowering the people by constantly telling them they should never dare to remove anyone failing so they are not responsible for the disaster that might come.”

EPL: It’s Screaming, They Don’t Know Football – Souness Slams Man Utd Owners

Liverpool legend, Graeme Souness has hit out at INEOS and claimed that the new Manchester United co-owners don’t really know football.

According to him, it is screaming that the people they have put in charge are not good enough.

Speaking on the Three Up Front podcast, Souness also criticized the decision to sign the likes of Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs De Ligt, and Joshua Zirkzee, saying the players are not good enough.

“I look at Man United since INEOS came in and it’s screaming out to me that they don’t really get football.

“They have now got their so-called footballing people in charge, in Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox, and I can’t believe for a minute that they didn’t have an input on the players they signed in the summer.

“They brought in Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs De Ligt, and Joshua Zirkzee. If they think those players are good enough for United, they are wrong.”

US Election 2024 Update: Polls Tighten as Trump and Harris Make Final Push

US Election 2024 Update: Polls Tight as Trump, Harris Target Key Swing States Ahead of Election

As the countdown to the 2024 US Presidential Election reaches its final hours, both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are intensifying their campaigns in critical swing states. With the election just a day away, the candidates are leaving no stone unturned in their quest for voter support.

In recent campaign stops across Georgia, Michigan, and North Carolina, Trump and Harris are vying for any advantage that could tip the scales in their favor. Harris has focused on the Arab American community in Michigan, emphasizing the “devastating” impact of Israel’s military actions in Gaza and Lebanon. However, community advocates assert that mere rhetoric is insufficient to address their concerns.

US Election 2024 Update: How Americans Elect Their President as Candidate With Highest Vote May Not Win

Trump, meanwhile, has faced backlash for incendiary comments made during a rally in Pennsylvania, where he suggested that he wouldn’t mind if a potential assassin aimed at “shooting through the fake news” to reach him. This remark has drawn fresh criticism and raised alarms about the growing tensions surrounding the election.

    US election results 2024 date

Recent polling data indicates that Latino voters in Pennsylvania are becoming increasingly critical of Trump, with 53% expressing that his comments about Puerto Rico at a rally were “very disrespectful.” As of now, over 78 million Americans have cast their ballots, according to the Election Lab at the University of Florida.

In a concerning development, Trump’s supporters have revived unsubstantiated claims regarding Dominion Voting Systems. A recent Instagram post suggested that a Dominion employee had assured Antifa members that he had “made sure” Trump wouldn’t win the 2020 election. This claim, rooted in past conspiracy theories, remains unproven and has previously resulted in legal consequences for those perpetuating it.

As part of her final push, Harris announced that her campaign mobilized 90,000 volunteers over the weekend to knock on doors and encourage voter turnout, calling it a “Get Out the Vote” weekend. Her strategy emphasizes a call to action just before Election Day.

Amidst these developments, Trump has begun using the slogan “Too big to rig,” urging his supporters to turn out in large numbers to ensure a victory beyond the margin of fraud. This rhetoric follows his continued assertions that the 2020 election was plagued by widespread fraud, claims that experts dismiss as unfounded.

In preparation for Election Day, Trump is scheduled to hold multiple rallies across battleground states, starting with North Carolina, followed by events in Pennsylvania, and culminating in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His focus remains heavily on economic issues, aiming to sway public sentiment in his favor.

As the election nears, Georgia’s election officials have sought to reassure voters about the integrity of the voting process, countering Trump’s claims of widespread fraud. Gabriel Sterling, chief operating officer for Georgia’s secretary of state, emphasized the extensive measures in place to ensure a fair election.

The candidates’ final days of campaigning reveal a stark divide in their approaches, with Trump continuing to lean into controversial statements and Harris attempting to unify her base through mobilization efforts. With both candidates appealing to their respective constituencies, the outcome of this closely contested election remains uncertain.

  • Dangote Refinery Finally Reveals How Much It Sells Petrol Amid Dispute with Marketers

Dangote Refinery Finally Reveals How Much It Sells Petrol Amid Dispute with Marketers

The management of Dangote Refinery has announced competitive pricing for its petrol, offering N960 per liter for supply via ships and N990 per liter via trucks, a decision it says aligns with international market rates.

This pricing adjustment was revealed on Sunday by Anthony Chiejina, the refinery’s spokesperson, amidst ongoing pricing disputes with fuel marketers who argue that imported petrol is available at a lower price than the refinery’s rates.

Read Also: Filmmaker, Dimeji Ajibola, Is Dead

Chiejina clarified that Dangote Refinery, which has a production capacity of 650,000 barrels per day (bpd), had set these prices following the deregulation led by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC).

He noted that while NNPC set its prices at N971 per liter for ship-based sales and N990 for truck-based deliveries, Dangote Refinery chose to price its ship-based sales lower, at N960 per liter, while matching the NNPC’s truck-based rate of N990.

“We have refrained from media disputes, but misinformation by IPMAN, PETROAN, and other groups has made a response necessary,” Chiejina stated. Both groups claim they can import PMS at lower prices, but our prices are benchmarked internationally and remain competitive.

Further addressing the concerns, Chiejina warned that any imported petrol priced below Dangote’s rates is likely substandard, as Nigeria’s regulatory body, NMDPRA, lacks the necessary laboratory facilities to verify fuel quality.

He accused some importers of undermining public safety by flooding the market with low-quality fuel, which he argued harms vehicles and machinery.

Additionally, Chiejina emphasized the importance of supporting domestic industries. “Protecting local industries is common practice worldwide,” he said, citing high tariffs in the U.S. and Europe on EVs and microchips as examples of economic protectionism. “We should ensure similar protections to sustain jobs and bolster the Nigerian economy,” he added.

Lagos-Calabar Highway: Nigerian Govt Increases Compensation To N18bn

The Federal Government has raised the compensation amount for property owners impacted by the construction of Section 1, Phase 1 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.

The compensation sum has been increased from the original N8 billion to approximately N18 billion.

This was announced by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, at a stakeholders’ engagement regarding the ongoing construction of Phase 1, sections 1 and 2 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway on Sunday in Lagos.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, this decision was made to ensure fair compensation for the affected citizens.

Umahi said: “The Federal Executive Council initially approved N8 billion for this corridor, but today we are hitting N18 billion, and this is just for section one.”

He stated that the compensation amounts were justified, determined by independent experts, and would be publicly disclosed along with property details to promote transparency.

Emphasising the government’s commitment to transparency, Umahi mentioned that half of the compensation has already been disbursed to the affected individuals.

The minister also promised to complete the compensation process within the next 10 days.

However, some stakeholders, including lawyers and valuation experts, voiced their dissatisfaction with the process.

They contended that the compensation was insufficient and that the procedures did not adhere to established standards.

A lawyer and valuation expert, Olusola Enitan, stated that the compensation did not meet the required standards.

He said, “Someone who had a home is now renting with no ability to replace what was taken from him.”

He referenced several Supreme Court rulings that support the right to fair compensation.

In response to these concerns, Umahi assured that the Federal Ministry of Works was operating within legal parameters and was willing to review any documents presented to expedite the compensation process.

  • NDLEA Uncovers Drugs Worth ₦4.4bn Concealed In Ethiopian Airlines’ Aircraft Lavatories

     NDLEA

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency operatives have seized drug consignments valued at ₦4.4 billion hidden in the lavatories of an Ethiopian Airlines aircraft.

The drugs, according to a statement on Sunday by the NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, were discovered during the post-landing cleaning of flight ET900 from Addis Ababa to Lagos on October 29, 2024.

Babafemi stated that the drugs were wrapped in nine polythene bags and concealed in the waste collectors in the two rear lavatories of the aircraft.

He added that at least 30 suspects are being questioned in connection with the drugs uncovered.

Babafemi said, “The attempt by members of an international drug syndicate operating between Brazil, Ethiopia, and Nigeria to smuggle into Lagos a total of 845 wraps of cocaine weighing 18.72 kilogrammes has been thwarted, with the consignments recovered by NDLEA operatives at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Ikeja.

“The drug consignments, worth ₦4,492,800,000 in street value, were recovered from two lavatories of an Ethiopian Airlines aircraft during the post-landing cleaning of flight ET900 from Addis Ababa to Lagos on Tuesday, October 29, 2024.

“The illicit drug consignments were wrapped in nine polythene bags and concealed in the waste collectors in the two rear lavatories of the aircraft, from where they were recovered after the MMIA Strategic Command of the NDLEA was alerted to the strange objects. No fewer than 30 suspects have so far been questioned in connection with the seizure.”

He added that “investigations revealed that the seized drugs were transported from Brazil to Ethiopia by ingestion and excreted in Addis Ababa by a group of couriers. Other traffickers then attempted to smuggle them into Nigeria through Lagos airport before their plan was thwarted with the cooperation of the airline’s authorities and other airport stakeholders.”

Meanwhile, Babafemi said drugs concealed in body cream containers and artworks were also recovered by the agency’s operatives.

He said, “In a similar vein, attempts by drug trafficking syndicates to export 2.928 kg of cocaine, cannabis, and tramadol 225 mg, concealed in body cream containers and pieces of artwork to Australia, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom through courier companies in Lagos were also blocked by NDLEA officers from the Directorate of Operations and General Investigation, on Monday, October 28.”

At the Apapa seaport in Lagos, Babafemi said NDLEA operatives intercepted 754,000 pills of tapentadol and acetaminophen 225 mg worth ₦525 million in a targeted and watch-listed container from India during a joint examination with Customs Service officers and other security agencies, among others, on October 29, 2024.

Wike’s Critique Sparks Backlash: Odinkalu Responds with Strong Allegations

The war of words between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and the former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, which began last Friday, is escalating.

The verbal clash erupted when Wike accused Odinkalu of ineptitude during his tenure as NHRC chairman and questioned his qualifications as a professor.

Wike criticized Odinkalu over a write-up regarding the unveiling of the N10 billion FCT Renewed Hope programme, which saw 80 vehicles introduced into the FCT transport system.

The FCT minister stated that the human rights lawyer lacked an exemplary record during his time at the NHRC. He remarked, “Someone showed me a write-up they said was written by a professor. I asked, ‘Professor of which university?’ Nobody knows.

He continued, “They were given opportunities in the Human Rights Commission. Ask them about their performance. What was the record during the time he was allowed to serve? Zero!”

In a swift response, Odinkalu took to his official X handle to counter Wike, labeling him a “greedy glutton” unfit to lecture others on ethical conduct.

He tweeted: “In Abuja, @GovWike is flexing. He is a #LifeBencher inebriated on substances that may or may not be just power. He can buy whomever he wants with public money to do whatever he desires. But even that has a shelf life. This idiocy will end one day too.”

Odinkalu added, “Unlike @GovWike, I have a life outside messing about with the #PublicPurse. I left @NhrcNigeria nine years ago, and I have no interest or desire to maintain a ‘structure’ there. A greedy glutton has no business giving lectures on the virtues of being teetotal!”

Odinkalu also took to his LinkedIn page early Sunday morning to further question Wike’s credibility as a public servant.

He stated, “#NyesomWike became a member of the Nigerian Bar Association HQ in 1991 and promptly mistook #TheBar for an invitation to get hopelessly drunk. In the same decade, he began his political career, starting with local government.”

He continued, “In the 25 years since he first held public office as the Chair of Obio/Akpor LGA in Rivers State in 1999, Mr. Wike has held various other positions in succession: Chief of Staff to the Governor of Rivers State, Minister of State for Education, and two-term governor of Rivers State. In August 2023, he became the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).”

Odinkalu added, “Over this quarter-century, Mr. Wike has evolved into the quintessential #GovernmentIndigene. He has emerged as the #GreedyGlutton of the Nigerian political space, bingeing on every beverage the country can offer: power, public money, the judiciary, treachery, violence, vintage alcohol, and much more.”

He concluded, “Inebriated as he is with substances financed by the #PublicPurse, Mr. Wike now thinks he must be #WorshippedAndGlorified. But #Nigeria is not his grove, and we did not escort him to the country. His gluttonous lips have done enough damage being perennially clasped around #Nigeria’s sovereign #FeedingBottle.”

BREAKING: Underage Detainees Facing Death Penalty for Protesting Against Tinubu’s Govt Hospitalised After Falling Ill in Detention

Several underage detainees facing the death penalty in Nigeria have reportedly fallen seriously ill while in detention, leading to their hospitalization in Abuja.

According to SaharaReporters, after officials at Kuje Prison rejected the minors due to malnutrition and their age, they were transferred to a police facility in the Apo area of Abuja, which is designed for adult detainees.

The detainees, comprising 24 minors, were initially arraigned before an Abuja Federal High Court on November 1 and granted bail under strict conditions by Justice Obiora Egwuatu. However, about 20 of them are now hospitalized at an undisclosed location after facing harsh conditions at the Intelligence Response Team unit, where they were detained in adult facilities. Sources noted that malnourishment and lack of adequate care have severely impacted their health.

Human rights group Take It Back Movement reported that when they visited the detainees to provide food and clothing, only six minors were available; the remaining detainees were reportedly too ill to meet visitors and had been moved to hospitals.

These minors have been in detention for over 90 days on treason charges linked to their participation in the peaceful #EndBadGovernance protest in August. This prolonged detention and the poor conditions of their imprisonment have triggered widespread condemnation. Activists and rights groups across the nation are now urging the government to release the minors unconditionally and investigate their alleged mistreatment.

In a joint statement on Friday, human rights organizations condemned the continued detention, which they argue reflects a punitive stance against dissent. They demanded immediate suspension of all bail conditions for the protesters, a transparent investigation into the reported cases of starvation and abuse of the minors, and an end to the criminalization of protest.

Amid growing public outcry, Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has requested the case file for review. Following President Bola Tinubu’s directive, Fagbemi has instructed the Nigeria Police to transfer the case file to his office for further assessment and to consider advancing the court’s adjourned date.

It has come to my notice that the police have arraigned those arrested in connection with the EndBadGovernance protest,” Fagbemi said in a Friday evening statement. “There are issues my office needs to address to make an informed decision. While the court remanded them to detention until January, I have directed the police to transfer the case file to the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, with an aim to bring the adjournment date forward.

This case has drawn national and international attention as the handling of the underage detainees remains a contentious issue in Nigeria’s legal and human rights landscape.

Speaking on Sky Sports about the appointment of the Portuguese, Lampard described it as ‘exciting.’

It’s Our Turn, He’s a Yoruba Man”: Peter Obi Under Fire for Making Controversial Comment

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has stirred controversy with comments suggesting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was elected in 2023 due to ethnic support from Yoruba voters.

During an interview on The Honest Bunch podcast, Obi questioned if “there is a market where Yoruba people buy things cheaper,” referencing economic hardships under Tinubu’s presidency.

Let’s talk about what is happening today, rice is N100,000 and we are not even sure where we are gonna be with this situation.

It is our turn, he is a Yoruba man. Ask the people in Ogun here, is there a plan where you people buy bread cheaper? So I can follow you this night and buy one.”

Obi’s remarks prompted swift backlash on social media, especially from Yoruba users who felt targeted by his statements. Twitter user @Mayordavid_9 expressed disappointment, stating, “This coming from a presidential aspirant shows how tribalistic this man is.”

Another user, @Laykay0808, added, “Is he not aware Yorubas’ votes and others made him win in Lagos?”

The criticism continued with @JubaOluwaseun, who emphasized, “The Yoruba voted for him en masse… Now compare this to what Tinubu achieved in his region.” Meanwhile, @Ohiss_ accused Obi of making “careless insensitive statements to please the media.

Obi’s comments have reignited debates around ethnic dynamics in Nigerian politics. His stance on Tinubu’s support base, coupled with recent comments suggesting church vigils be limited to boost productivity, has drawn polarized responses, with some seeing it as practical advice, while others see it as an unnecessary interference in religious practices.
