    The Northern Senators’ Forum on Tuesday commended President Bola Tinubu for showing leadership in ordering the release of minors arrested and detained during the #EndBadGovernance protests.

    The Chairman of the forum, Sen. Abdulaziz Yar’adua, indicated this in a statement released in Abuja.

    He said the President’s decision was a demonstration of his commitment to protecting the rights and well-being of Nigerian youth.

    “His directive to the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, to expedite the release process is a welcome development.”

    The forum appreciated the President’s show of leadership in addressing this critical issue.

  • Six Arrested As Rivers Police Rescue 6-Month-Old Baby Kidnapped By Neighbour And Sold For N3.6M

    A six-month-old child, Lucky Sunday, who was abducted and sold for N3.6 million, has been rescued by the Rivers State Police Command in Port Harcourt

    The infant was kidnapped by a co-tenant of his parents at their residence on Anekelane Street in the Mile 2 axis of Diobu on 29 September 2024.

    Operatives of the Command have been on the trail of the suspect since the abduction.

    Their efforts finally paid off when detectives attached to the Mile 1 Police Division trailed the suspect to Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, arrested and transported him back to Port Harcourt.

    It was gathered that during interrogation, the prime suspect revealed to the police that he sold the baby for N3.6 million to an unidentified female buyer who took the child to Enugu State.

    Following a discreet investigation, detectives attached to the Mile 1 Police Division rescued the child on Sunday, 3 November 2024, and arrested the buyer and four other accomplices, bringing the total number of suspects to six, all of whom are currently detained at the Mile 1 Police Station in Port Harcourt.

    The father of the child, Anekan Sunday, confirmed the rescue of his baby and the arrest of the six suspects.

    “Yes, I saw my baby yesterday (Sunday). But the police didn’t allow me to take him yet because they said they wanted to go to court,    ” he said.

    “The suspect who took the baby and the others have been arrested. They are six in all, and they are at the Mile 1 Police Division.”

    The spokesperson for the State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the rescue of the child to the Punch and the arrest of the suspects, adding that it is a child trafficking syndicate.

    The PPRO also revealed that the prime suspect had previously sold his own biological child before abducting that of his neighbor.

    “It is a case of a child trafficking syndicate that our men have busted. The man sold his own biological son and also abducted another child, whom he sold for N3.6 million to a lady,” she said.

    “But the lady claimed she went to an orphanage to register the child for adoption in Enugu State. The child was adopted here in Port Harcourt and sold to her.

    “The child has been rescued. The suspect and five others have been arrested, and investigations are ongoing.”

    An arrest warrant has been issued for the Managing Director, MD, of Dana Air, Mr Hathiramani Ranesh, by the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, over his alleged complicity in a N13 billion fraud.

    Justice Obiora Egwuatu on Monday, November 4, ordered the defendant’s arrest following his alleged refusal to appear before the court to enter his plea to a six-count charge the Federal Government preferred against him.

    The arrest order was anchored on section 184 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015.

    “The 1st defendant is bound to appear before the court and if he does not, the court can issue warrant for his arrest.

    “Accordingly and relying on provision of the law, I, hereby, issued a warrant for the arrest of the 1st defendant.

    “The defendant shall appear before this court on 13th of January, 2025, before any objection can be taken

    ,” Justice Egwuatu held.

    Even though the defendant had failed to appear for his trial, he, however, briefed a lawyer, Mr. B. Ademola-Bello, to file a preliminary objection to challenge the competence of the charge against him and the jurisdiction of the court to entertain it.

    FG had through its lawyer, Mojisola-Okeya Esho, prayed the court to issue a bench warrant for the arrest of the defendant.

    It contended that the court could not hear the preliminary objection without firstly entering his plea to the charge against him.

    FG, in the charge marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/101/2021, cited Ranesh, Dana Group PLC and Dana Steel Ltd, as 1st to 3rd defendants, respectively.

    The defendants and others at large were alleged to have committed a felony between September and December 2018, within the premises of DANA Steel Rolling Factory in Katsina.

    They were further alleged to have conspired to remove, convert and sell four units of industrial generators “i.e. three (3) units Ht of 9,000 KVA and 1 unit of 1,000 KVA; all valued at over N450 million, which form part of the Deed of Asset Debenture that were charged as collateral security for a bond issued in your favour, which Deed is still subsisting at all material times.”

    In another count of the charge, it was alleged that the defendants and others at large, at House No. 116, Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Isolo-Lagos, between April 7th and 8th, 2014, conspired to fraudulently divert the sum N864 million.

    The money was said to be part of the bond proceeds from Ecobank meant for resuscitation of production at Dana Steel Rolling Factory in Katsina for other unapproved uses.

    The defendants were also alleged to have conspired “to fraudulently remove and transfer to one Atlantic Shrimpers Account No: 0001633175 with Access Bank and divert the sum of N60,300,000 (Sixty Million Three Hundred Thousand Naira).”

    The money was said to be part of the bond proceeds from Ecobank meant for resuscitation of production at Dana Steel Rolling Factory in Katsina for other unapproved uses.

    The cumulative sum of the amount involved in the charge was N1, 374, 300, 000, while the offence was said to be contrary to and punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

    At the resumed proceeding on Monday, the defence lawyer told the court that the 1st defendant was outside the country, adding that the other defendants are corporate entities under his management.

    Not satisfied with explanation by the defence counsel, Justice Egwuatu ordered that Ranesh should be arrested and produced before the court on the next adjourned date.

    Cleric Bags Life Imprisonment For Defiling Minor

    An Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Monday sentenced an Islamic cleric, Alani Rafiu, to life imprisonment for defiling a 14-year-old year girl (name withheld).

    In his judgement, Justice Rahman Oshodi held that the prosecution proved each of the ingredients of defilement against Rafiu.

    Oshodi said that the gravity of the convict’s offence could not be overstated as he betrayed the trust placed on him as a religious instructor and family friend.

    He said the convict’s conduct represented a profound violation of secular and religious principles.

    According to him, the evidence before the court reveals a calculated pattern of predatory behaviour.

    The court held that the convict deliberately isolated the victim, exploited her vulnerability and bought her silence with money.

    The judge said: “You betrayed the trust placed in you as a religious instructor and family friend.

    “Instead of nurturing and protecting a vulnerable 14-year-old child entrusted in your spiritual care, you repeatedly sexually abused her in a place of worship.

    “The physical and psychological trauma inflicted on this young girl is immeasurable.

    “At an age when she should be focused on her education and development, she was subjected to experiences that no child should endure.”

    Oshodi further said that there was compelling and consistent proof establishing that the victim was a child and the evidence manifested through multiple sources.

    He said the victim, in her evidence, provided a specific, detailed and first-hand account of sexual intercourse with the convict.

    According to him, the evidence of the victim was corroborated by the medical report which showed penile penetration.

    He said the convict abused religious authority and the sacred space of a mosque to perpetrate sexual violations against the survivor.

    The court maintained that places of worship should be sanctuaries of safety and spiritual growth, not venues for the exploitation of children.

    Oshodi said: “The prosecution gave evidence that the defendant had sex with her three times in the mosque.

    “The medical evidence and the prosecutor’s testimony paint a disturbing picture of the physical harm you caused.

    “The bleeding she experienced and your callous provision of a handkerchief to clean up the evidence of your abuse demonstrate a shocking disregard for her well-being.

    “This court must protect children from sexual predators and send a clear message that such conduct will be met with the full force of the law.”

    The court, subsequently, convicted Rafiu and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

    The court also ordered that his name be registered in the sexual offences register as maintained by the Lagos State Government.

    The state counsel, led by Mr Babajide Boye, called three witnesses through whom several documents were tendered while the convict testified as a sole witness.

    The prosecution submitted that the convict committed the offence on August 17, 2021, in Ikotun, Lagos.

    The offence contravenes Section 137 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State.

    William Manga, the unit commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Badagry Command, confirmed the incident on Monday.

    The accident occurred at about 3:20 pm, near Agbo-Malu Bus Stop, Age-Mowo axis of the expressway.

    “Our personnel were alerted about the accident immediately, and we got to the scene at 3.23 p.m., three minutes after they were alerted.

    “The Mazda commercial bus, with registration number ABJ 95 YJ and a Toyota car, with registration number KTU 339 YJ, coming from Badagry, were involved in a head-on collision.

    “18 persons were involved in the accident but four of them sustained varying degrees of injury.

    “The four injured persons have been taken to General Hospital, Badagry, for treatment

    ,” he said.

    The commander stated that the accident was due to dangerous driving by the two drivers.

    He said that the two vehicles involved in the accident had been removed and taken to the FRSC office in Badagry.

    Manga appealed to passengers to always caution drivers against speeding, while he also urged motorists plying the road to be conscious of their speed on the one-lane expressway.

    Chanting slogans and carrying placards, the protesters demanded transparency and accountability, questioning why, despite such substantial spending, the refineries remain largely non-operational.

    According to protesters, the state of the refineries is seen as a significant setback for Nigeria’s energy sector, especially at a time when fuel scarcity and high import costs burden everyday citizens.

    “We are here to hold Mele Kyari accountable,” said one protester. “$4 billion has been pumped into these refineries, yet Nigerians have not seen any tangible improvements. It’s time for those responsible to step down and allow for proper management.”

     

    The NNPC had previously stated that the funds allocated were part of an overhaul meant to restore the facilities to full operation. However, critics argue that the timelines have repeatedly been pushed back, with limited updates on the actual progress.

  • Governor Eno Defends Daughter’s Appointment, Dispels Constitutional Concerns

    Gov Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has again defended his decision to delegate the roles of the First Lady to his daughter, Helen Obareki following the tragic demise of her mother, Patience Umo Eno.

    Obareki was appointed by governor Eno following the sudden death of his wife who was the coordinator of Golden Initiative For All (GIFA), a pet project which was used as a platform to touch many lives.

    While some people say the appointment should have been silent about the office of the First Lady and perhaps concentrated on the coordination of GIFA activities, others say by appointing his daughter as the First Lady and GIFA coordinator, the governor has given recognition to an office which has not been provided for in the country’s constitition.

    However, responding to the criticism, Eno explained that the coordination of activities and engagements of women in the state rest solely on the shoulders of the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare.

    He stated this at the national combined service of the All Nations Christian Ministry International in Eket LGA.

    The Governor said that the responsibilities of the Ministry of Women Affairs were well spelt-out in relation to the management of women affairs, stressing that there shouldn’t be any form of conflict, ambiguity or confusion between its role and that of the Office of the First Lady and its pet project, the Golden Initiative For All, GIFA.

    He said all the aides to the Governor on women mobilisation were expected to work with the Commissioner for Women Affairs to ensure seamless coordination of all women related matters in the State.

    The Governor who reiterated that Obareki is the Coordinator of the Office of First Lady, and the Golden Initiative for All, added that GIFA, besides being a pet- project of the late First Lady, the programme would outlive the office, and remains a foundation in her memory, for the purpose of continuously touching lives.

    He explained that the choice of Obareki as Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady was basically on the grounds of competence having worked closely with her mother, the First Lady, as Personal Assistant, a position that gave her vantage opportunity to understudy her.

    He said that besides being his first daughter, Obareki’s experiences over the years distinguished her as the most competent person to coordinate the activities of the office.
