  • NJC Probes Judges Over Conflicting Rulings In Cases Involving Rivers State

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has launched a probe into judges of federal and state high courts over conflicting rulings in political cases in Rivers State.

The investigation is led by a panel, including a former justice of the Court of Appeal and two heads of courts, under the oversight of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.

The Chief Justice met with the panel on Monday and issued a directive for a swift conclusion to the investigation, mandating that the probe’s report be submitted within the week.

The inquiry focuses on several judges involved in adjudicating the ongoing political turmoil between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his estranged godfather, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, which has led to multiple legal disputes.

Additionally, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court has been summoned by the Chief Justice and is scheduled to be questioned on Tuesday regarding these issues.

This action follows several formal complaints to the Council, though it was Justice Kekere-Ekun herself who initiated the comprehensive probe suo moto, responding to significant public concern over the judicial inconsistencies.

The NJC’s probe aims to address these conflicting rulings that have not only complicated the political landscape in Rivers State but have also raised questions about the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary in managing politically sensitive cases.

  • Atiku, Obasanjo Meet In Abuja

    Atiku, Obasanjo Meet In Abuja

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has met with his former boss, ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Atiku met with Obasanjo during the 25th-anniversary celebration of the Women Trafficking and Child Labour Eradication Foundation in Abuja.

WOTCLEF was founded by his wife, Mrs Titi Abubakar.

Disclosing this on Monday, the former vice president expressed excitement about reuniting and walking alongside Obasanjo.

He described the meeting with Obasanjo as a profound privilege.

He also commended Obasanjo for his commitment and support for the foundation, which addresses human trafficking and child labour in the country.

Posting on X, Atiku wrote: “It’s a profound privilege to stride alongside our esteemed former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, into the vibrant celebration of WOTCLEF Foundation’s 25th Anniversary in Abuja.

“This moment is a testament to the unwavering support the Foundation has received from President Obasanjo. -AA”

  • VP Shettima Returns To Nigeria After Plane Damage, Briefs Tinubu

The Vice President, Sen Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after the cancellation of his trip to the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Summit in Samoa.

The vice president’s journey was abruptly halted due to an incident at JFK Airport in New York, where a foreign object damaged his aircraft during a stopover, necessitating urgent repairs.

Initially, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had designated Shettima to head the Nigerian delegation to the summit.

However, following the incident, a team of ministers represented Nigeria at the event instead.

Upon his return, Vice-President Shettima immediately briefed President Tinubu on the state of the nation and his other official engagements, including a trip to Sweden, where he represented Nigeria in high-level bilateral talks.

During his visit to Sweden, Shettima met with several key government officials, including Crown Princess Victoria and the Swedish Prime Minister, to discuss bilateral relations.

The talks were part of Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to strengthen international partnerships and foster economic development.

State House released photographs on Monday showing Vice-President Shettima and President Tinubu in discussion at the Presidential Villa.

President Tinubu returned to Nigeria on October 19, 2024, resuming his duties and continuing the dialogue on national and international matters with his Vice-President.

  • Attempts By Okocha To Block Rivers LG Allocations Tantamount To Coup – APC

Attempts By Okocha To Block Rivers LG Allocations Tantamount To Coup – APC

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has raised strong objections to efforts by Tony Okocha, a factional chairman within the party, to halt revenue allocation to the state’s 23 local governments.

The Rivers APC, led by Emeke Beke, expressed dismay at what it described as ongoing disrespect and defiance toward a valid court ruling that had removed Okocha and his seven-member caretaker committee from their positions.

In a statement on Sunday, Rivers APC spokesperson Darlington Nwauju stated that Okocha’s continued claims to party leadership directly undermine the court’s judgment.

Nwauju emphasized that the APC can no longer remain passive on political matters affecting the state’s citizens.

He further criticized Okocha’s court bid to suspend local government allocations, asserting that this action seeks to disrupt the livelihoods of countless Rivers residents who rely on the local government system.

Nwauju said, “It is shameful that Okocha and his friends who do not believe or respect the judgement of the High Court which invalidated their so-called appointment by NWC after more than nine months of litigation, have been openly boasting of getting judgement from a court of coordinate jurisdiction in Abuja, to stop allocations to local governments in Rivers State thereby frustrating thousands of Rivers people whose livelihood and survival is dependent on the local government system, especially council workers.”

The APC called on the judiciary to uphold its independence and avoid becoming a tool for politically motivated agendas.

The APC also confirmed that the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, conducted local government elections in the state, acting in accordance with its mandate as an independent body.

“We do not believe that the judiciary should continue to allow itself to be manipulated by desperate politicians to the point of deposing affidavits in the name of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, whereas a competent court in Port Harcourt had taken a stand against the contraption Tony Okocha claims to represent (refer to Suit No. PHC/3592/CS/2023).

“We stand by the fact that Electoral bodies are expected to be independent/neutral and must have the spine to resist meddlesomeness from the courts.

“This we believe the RSIEC in Rivers State did by conducting local government elections in Rivers State on October 5th 2024.

“Section 87 of the 2010 Electoral Act bars courts from stopping INEC in carrying out its electoral duties. Section 60 (2) of the 2018 Rivers State Local Government Act draws strength from the Electoral Act.

“Attempting to arrest electoral processes that are ongoing or almost concluded is tantamount to coup on our democratic norms.

“Recall that in 2004 when President Olusegun Obasanjo ordered that funds belonging to Lagos state be confiscated on the grounds that new local government areas were created, the state government stood its ground and won the case.

“Again in 2005, the National Assembly made a law for monitoring local government funds in the country by appointing monitoring committees.

“States went to court, and the Supreme Court said the Federal Government has no power to monitor funds meant for local governments because they are democratically elected.

“The Supreme Court of Nigeria has also reinforced the powers and independence of local governments under our laws to receive funding unhindered based on Section 162(7) of the Constitution.

APC recalled that the Rivers State 8th Assembly, under the administration of former Governor Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, allegedly passed a bill, swiftly signed into law by Wike, aimed at preventing aggrieved parties from filing suits related to local government elections.

He added, “We are aware that funds belonging to local government councils in the state are no longer accessible to these greedy politicians.

“We know for sure that the flurry of litigations are purely for selfish reasons and not to deepen our democratic process.

“We suggest that these cannon fodders and later day apostles of due process join the clamour for the implementation of the report of Justice Muhammad Uwais Panel which recommended that members of electoral bodies in Nigeria be appointed through advertisement, and those shortlisted go through a body that would then recommend them to the House of Assembly.

“It is the way to go to ensure confidence in the electoral process by all political parties and not embarking on a civilian coup d’etat aimed at punishing innocent Rivers people.”

  • Otti, Eno To Repair Abia-Akwa Ibom Link Roads

Gov Alex Otti of Abia State and his Akwa Ibom counterpart, Umo Eno have forged a partnership in road infrastructure to ensure the accessibility of roads linking the two neighbouring states.

This understanding was reached during a condolence visit by the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, on his counterpart, Umo Eno, at the Government House in Uyo over the weekend following the demise of the Akwa Ibom First Lady, Patience Eno.

Speaking during the condolence visit, Otti expressed the government and people of Abia State’s condolences to Eno, his immediate family and the people of Akwa Ibom State for the loss of the First Lady, noting that her impactful life speaks volumes and her demise a grievous loss for the state and the nation.

Despite the huge loss, he encouraged Eno to continue his people-oriented projects, assuring the support of Abia and fixing the roads linking the two states for the socioeconomic interest of citizens across the two states.

“We will work collaboratively to fix the roads linking our states for the socioeconomic interest of our citizens,
    “Otti said.

Receiving the Abia State governor, Eno expressed appreciation to his immediate family and the entire Akwa Ibom people for the condolence and support bestowed on them in their season of grief, adding that the kindness received has been a source of strength.

Eno stated that the departed First Lady, in her short but impactful lifetime, had left a legacy that she will eternally be remembered for and the choice of her first daughter, Helen Obareki, who has been her closest assistant while alive, to coordinate activities of the First Lady’s office, a step to ensure all her lofty visions are sustained.

“We want to thank you first of all, Sir, for not just the visit but all of the calls and encouragement. Like I say to people, the loss of my wife is a lifetime loss. We courted for two years, and we have been married for 38 years. So forty years is not something one can easily forget. It is like half of me is gone, but she was an accomplished woman. She made an impact, joined me as pastor of our ministry, and did excellently well in managing the women and building homes,” Eno maintained.

On road partnership, Eno assured of his readiness to work collaboratively with the Abia State Government to both expedite federal government intervention on the Ikot Ekpene-Aba road, as well as remedy defective portion of the Ini-Arochukwu road and initiate other actions to ensure accessibility of economically viable roads linking the two states.

“For the road you have talked about, if there are other roads that we can, as two states, collaborate together to work on, I am sure we are prepared to do that. We can look at the road and see how we can partner to work it because, at the end of the day, it is our people who will use the road.

“Aba remains a very strong regional commercial centre for all of us. I will see whatever we can do to ensure that our people have that smooth passage to and fro Aba,

    ” Eno stated.

  • We Didn’t Participate In Kano LG Elections Because The Process Was Undemocratic – PDP

We Didn’t Participate In Kano LG Elections Because The Process Was Undemocratic – PDP

The newly elected Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Kano State, Yusuf Ado Kibiya, has said the party did not participate in Saturday’s local government election in the state because the process was undemocratic.

Addressing newsmen at Press Center, NUJ, Kano, on Monday, Kibiya said, “There is no way local government elections under the kind of governments we operate in Nigeria, more specifically at the state level, would be free and fair.

“The last council election in Kano was the worst in the history of local government elections because from the composition of the electoral umpire to the selling of forms and screening, it was never free; so what’s the essence of participating?”

Speaking on his leadership and what he intends to achieve, Kibiya explained that he is going to enhance the democratic process by strengthening the democratic framework within the party.

“This will ensure that every voice is heard and every vote counts, with focus on identifying and supporting credible leaders who are dedicated to serving the public with integrity and excellence,” he added.

To this end, he said the party has rolled out a 10-Year Development Program that will engage professionals from various fields, which every elected official will commit to implement.

“Importantly, this document will be developed by the entire people of Kano State, ensuring that it reflects the needs and aspirations of our citizens,” he said.

“We will provide a platform where the problems facing Kano State can be discussed and solutions thoughtfully developed. This includes addressing the crisis of leadership, institutional relationship and every social, educational, religious, and economic issue affecting our state.

“My administration will upload high standards of discipline and accountability within the party. We will create an environment where excellence is not just encouraged but expected.

“I invite all citizens – party members and non-party members alike – to join us in this notable crusade. Together we can build a brighter future for our state. Your ideas, participation, and advocacy are essential as we strive for excellence and true service to our people. Let us work hand-in-hand to create a government that is responsive, transparent, and accountable.

“The time for change is now, and together we will succeed. Success can only be achieved if we work together and re-enforced one another,” the PDP chairman added while speaking on his plans for the party and the state.

  • Lagos Police Arrest Housemaid Who Allegedly Stole $60,000 Jewelry After 16-Month Chase

A 33-year-old woman has been arrested over the alleged theft of jewellery valued at over $60,000 from her employer, after working as a maid for less than 24 hours in Lagos state.

On Sunday, October 27, Ms Alice Udey, who allegedly goes by several other fake names, was taken into custody at the Ikoyi Police Station, Lagos, in connection with the theft that occurred over a year ago, police officials said.

Before her arrest, the police carried out an extensive 16-month search that has exposed what authorities suspect is an organised crime ring targeting rich Nigerian households.

According to police, Udey got employment as a domestic worker after the employer recruited her from an agency.

However, she allegedly disappeared the next day along with valuable jewelry belonging to her employer.

The suspect is expected to face charges related to theft while investigation continues.

Edo: Gunmen Kidnap Catholic Priest In Auchi

Gunmen on Sunday evening abducted Reverend Father Thomas Oyode, the rector of the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary, Ivhianokpodi, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.

Following the abduction, the Catholic Diocese of Auchi is seeking the assistance of law enforcement agencies in securing the release of the priest.

A statement by the Director of Communications of the diocese, Reverend Father Peter Egielewa on Monday disclosed that priests and seminarians of the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary, Ivhianokpodi, were observing their evening prayers and benediction on Sunday evening when they were attacked by gunmen around 7 PM.

The attackers reportedly abducted Oyode and led him into the bush.

According to the diocese, the vice-rector and all the seminarians have been accounted for and have been relocated for safety purposes.

The diocese said it has, however, not had any communication with the abductors of Father Oyode.

It also disclosed that the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary established by the catholic bishop of Auchi, most reverend Gabriel Dunia in 2006 for the training of future priests, has turned out more than 500 graduates over the years.

  • Baba Vanga Predictions List 2025: Europe Under Muslim Rule, Russia’s Victory, and Global Conflict

Baba Vanga Predictions List 2025: Europe Under Muslim Rule, Russia’s Victory, and Global Conflict

Baba Vanga’s Future Predictions: From 2025 Conflicts to Complete Muslim Rule by 2043.

Throughout history, individuals have claimed to possess the ability to foresee the future, offering glimpses into what lies ahead for humanity. Among these figures, Baba Vanga, a blind Bulgarian clairvoyant, stands out for her numerous predictions that have captured public attention. As her prophecies continue to spark interest and debate, many ponder the implications of her visions, particularly as we approach critical years that she has predicted for potential upheaval.

Both Baba Vanga and Nostradamus have made alarming predictions for 2025, suggesting that Europe could face devastating conflict. Nostradamus, a 16th-century French astrologer, warned of “cruel wars” in Europe, possibly linked to the ongoing war in Ukraine, and hinted at an “ancient plague” posing a greater threat than enemies. Similarly, Baba Vanga cautioned that a new war would erupt in 2025, jeopardising Europe’s population and potentially leading to a global apocalypse. Reports suggest she explicitly mentioned that Russian President Vladimir Putin would emerge victorious, asserting that Russia would dominate the world. Vanga’s past predictions, including significant historical events like the 9/11 attacks, reportedly have an 85% success rate, raising concerns about the future stability of Europe amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

    Who is Baba Vanga?

Born in 1911, Baba Vanga, whose full name is Vangeliya Pandeva Gushterova, lost her sight at the age of 12 after being caught in a storm. Following this traumatic incident, she reportedly developed precognitive abilities that led her to fame for her prophecies. Vanga spent most of her life in Bulgaria, earning the title “Nostradamus of the Balkans.” Along with her predictions about global events, she also foretold her own death. In a 1990 interview, she predicted she would pass away on August 11, 1996, and indeed, she died on that exact date. Despite her death, her legacy of prophetic claims endures, with new interpretations of her predictions continuously emerging.

    Notable Predictions and Their Accuracy

Baba Vanga is said to have predicted several significant occurrences, many of which have garnered attention for their perceived accuracy. Some of her most notable predictions include:

    • World War II: Vanga reportedly foresaw the devastation and immense loss of life during this global conflict.
    • Dissolution of the Soviet Union: She predicted the collapse of the USSR long before it became a reality in 1991.
    • Chernobyl Disaster: In 1986, she is said to have foreseen the nuclear catastrophe at Chernobyl.
    • Stalin’s Death: Vanga accurately predicted the death of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.
    • Kursk Submarine Disaster: In 2000, she mentioned a tragedy involving “Kursk” before the Russian submarine sank.
    • September 11 Attacks: Vanga reportedly predicted that “steel birds” would attack America, which many believe referred to the 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers.
    • 2004 Tsunami: She also foretold the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami that resulted in significant loss of life across multiple countries.
    • 1985 Earthquake: She predicted an earthquake in Northern Bulgaria that occurred in 1985.

These predictions raise concerns about impending crises and societal changes.

Looking Ahead: Predictions for 2025 and Beyond

Baba Vanga’s future predictions paint a grim picture. She claims that the end of the world will begin in 2025, although she asserts that humanity will not be completely wiped out until 5079. In addition to the anticipated conflict in Europe, she forecasts that by 2043, Europe will fall under Muslim rule, and by 2076, communist rule will return globally. Vanga emphasises that the world will ultimately end in 5079 due to a natural event.

One particularly intriguing prediction from Baba Vanga is the potential for alien encounters in 2025. She suggested that Earth would encounter extraterrestrial beings, leading to profound implications for humanity. This prophecy has ignited discussions about the existence of aliens and the possible impact of such encounters on our understanding of the universe.

Common Themes: Nostradamus and Baba Vanga

Nostradamus and Baba Vanga share eerily similar predictions for 2025, including significant conflict in Europe. While Baba Vanga predicted extraterrestrial contact and a new energy source, Nostradamus warned of “cruel wars” and a devastating “ancient plague.” Despite their different times and cultures, their visions align remarkably, highlighting common themes of upheaval and change.

    Scepticism and Continued Interest

Despite many of Baba Vanga’s predictions seemingly coming to fruition, scepticism persists. Critics argue that her predictions are often vague and open to interpretation, with clarity emerging only after events occur. Much of her supposed foresight is anecdotal and based on secondhand accounts, raising questions about the validity of her clairvoyance.

Nevertheless, Baba Vanga’s predictions resonate with a wide audience, igniting discussions about humanity’s future and the potential consequences of current geopolitical conflicts. Her alarming predictions for 2025 remind us of the fragility of global peace and stability, prompting reflection on the ongoing challenges humanity faces—geopolitical tensions, environmental degradation, and social unrest.

As the world grapples with uncertainty, Vanga’s warnings challenge us to consider the importance of vigilance, diplomacy, and global cooperation. Only time will tell if her predictions will come to pass, but they undoubtedly fuel the imagination and provoke thought about the future we are shaping today.

    Baba Vanga Predictions List 2025

    1. Global Conflict: Vanga predicted that a new war would break out in Europe, leading to significant turmoil and danger for the continent’s population.
    2. Victory of Russia: She forecasted that Russian President Vladimir Putin would emerge victorious in this conflict, with Russia asserting dominance on the global stage.
    3. Alien Encounters: Vanga claimed that by 2025, humanity would encounter extraterrestrial beings, marking a significant shift in human understanding of the universe.
    4. Environmental Catastrophes: She suggested that severe natural disasters would occur, further escalating global challenges and uncertainties.
    5. New Energy Source: Vanga hinted at the discovery of a new energy source that could revolutionise how humanity interacts with energy, potentially addressing ongoing environmental issues.
    6. Plague Threat: Echoing Nostradamus, she predicted that an “ancient plague” would emerge, posing a significant threat to human health and safety.

Baba Vanga’s visions, whether believed or doubted, encourage us to work together for a better world.

  • Dare Adekanmbi: Understanding Tinubu’s Tax Bills Of Reliefs For Nigerians, Businesses

Dare Adekanmbi: Understanding Tinubu’s Tax Bills Of Reliefs For Nigerians, Businesses

The transmission of four bills that aim to overhaul Nigeria’s tax system to the National Assembly two weeks ago by President Bola Tinubu has sparked debates in the polity about the purpose of the bills. Some have expressed fears that the bills may encapsulate proposals calling for a raise in tax rates in a way that will further burden the citizens. Some Nigerians have received the news with mixed feelings, while others have chosen to wait for details before commenting on the development.

There is no basis to entertain any fear about these bills. If anything, Nigerians are going to commend President Tinubu for focusing on laying a solid foundation that will ensure fiscal stability of the country. When Nigerians get to know the details of the in the documents, they will know that the president is actually working to bring reliefs to them and their businesses.

The four executive bills seek to tidy up the fiscal policy and legislation environment in the country. They are: Nigeria Tax Bill, Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, and Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill. These bills seek to translate the recommendations by the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, chaired by Taiwo Oyedele, into implementable legislative framework for the benefits of Nigerians.

It is common knowledge that one factor which has continued to impede efficiency in Nigeria’s tax system and has negatively impacted revenue is multiplicity of taxes. President Tinubu, in his inauguration speech, had pledged to address the issue of multiple taxation and remove all hurdles against investment in the country. Multiplicity of taxes is one of the issues that the Nigeria Tax Bill seeks to end. This will certainly bring reliefs to corporate Nigeria. Imposition of tax by more than one agency or level of government, without a shadow of doubt, constitutes a chokehold on businesses, especially micro and small businesses as well as individuals.

How will this bill address multiplicity of taxes? In Nigeria today, laws dealing with various aspects of taxation are scattered in different legislations. Some of these laws are: Companies Income Tax Act, Personal Income Tax Act, Capital Gains Tax Act, Value-Added Tax Act, Stamp Duties Act, Petroleum Profits Act, Tertiary Education Fund Act, Petroleum Industry Act and so on. In addition to the tax-specific laws, there are plethora of tax provisions in non-tax laws such as the NLNG Act, Tertiary Education Trust Fund Act, NASENI Act, Lottery Act, Companies and Allied Matters Act, etc. The list is seemingly endless.

In enforcing these disparate tax provisions, unintended multiple taxation occurs and this is one of the things that the bill seeks to address. The Nigeria Tax Bill aims to codify of all taxing provisions into one single document to be known as the Nigeria Tax Act when passed into law. In the bill, chapters are devoted to the various tax types in a simplified format. The proposed tax law is also written in a simple language that anyone with basic literary education can read and understand. The complexity of the extant law, for instance, is such that it will be pretty difficult for a Professor of Mathematics to compute his personal income tax on his own because of all the inter-twinning provisions that will befuddle him as to what income is taxable or what deduction is allowable. All these complications and complexities have been removed in the new proposals.

In the proposed law, companies doing businesses within the country have been re-classified into two: small and large. This is done in accordance with the companies’ respective turnover thresholds. A company will be deemed small if its turnover is N50m or less in a year. Under the extant law, any company which records a turnover of N25m or less is not required to pay Companies Income Tax (CIT). In the new tax bill, companies with yearly turnover that is up to N50m will not pay CIT. As regards large companies, that is, those whose turnover thresholds are above N50m, there is a proposal in the bill to give some relief to them. The objective of this succour for such companies is in line with President Tinubu’s avowed commitment to protect small businesses and eliminate inhibitions that negatively impact entrepreneurship in the country.

Perhaps the game-changer among the several pleasant provisions of this document is what the bill seeks to do with VAT. It is an eloquently testimony to the fact that President Tinubu has listened and harkened to the complaints by Nigerians, particularly the ordinary Nigerians who are bearing the substantial brunt of the initial pain of the government’s economic reformation policies. In the proposed law, VAT will not be charged on all items that have direct existential impact on the common people. Items such as food, medicals, education, transport business and agriculture are not chargeable to VAT. For instance, tuition fee or rent paid by proprietors or purchases made by school owners for the purpose of the business of educating Nigerians will be free from VAT. It is the same for owners of hospitals, those in agricbusiness as well as those who buy vehicles for transportation. These are the areas where the lives of the common people will be significantly positively affected, especially in view of the temporary pain of the ongoing reforms.

In addition, certain input VAT which hitherto is not possible to claim under the current law can now be claimed. Another relief the president has put in the bill is that for VAT refunds will be made within 30 days upon completion of paper work by the such companies or entities. Already VAT is not being charged on diesel and petrol. The president had in July this year directed the suspension of duties, tariffs and taxes on importation of food commodities as part of measures to arrest the rising cost of living.

It may interest many to know that VAT rate of 7.5% currently being charged in Nigeria is the lowest on the continent and one of the lowest in the world. Madagascar and Morocco charged 20% VAT in 2022, while it is 19.25% in Cameroon. Many countries of the world, recognising the importance of tax revenue in providing public services, have this year reviewed their VAT upwards with one of the most striking examples being Saudi Arabia which upped its rate from 5% to 15% in July.

Further to the Nigeria Tax Bill, the table of tax rates for individuals has been restructured in a way that brings huge respite to low-income earners. It is worth mentioning that the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) does not collect taxes from individuals. It is within the jurisdiction of states’ revenue authorities to collect such income tax from individuals. The only set of individuals who pay personal income tax to FIRS are members of the Armed Forces, members of the diplomatic corps and foreigners earning income in Nigeria. In the new bill, individuals whose annual income is N800, 000 after the deductions of pension and deductible items will not be required to pay personal income tax (PAYEE). However, the elite who earn fat annually will pay more. This is in line with the global principle of progressive taxation which takes more tax from the high earners and a little lower tax from middle earners, while low income individuals pay very little. The pledge of Mr President is that his administration’s fiscal policy will tax prosperity and not poverty.

The second bill, the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, basically seeks to consolidate administrative provisions for all taxes. This bill harmonises all tax administration issues such as registration, filing, payment, dispute resolution, etc for all tax-types and revenue authorities. It also clearly delineates the roles and objectives of all tax authorities in the country as well as their relevant jurisdictions. The aim of this bill is to promote the ease of tax administration, lessen tax compliance burden on the citizens and improve the ease of doing business in the country.

As for the proposed Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill, this is seeking to replace the Joint Tax Board (JTB) which has been wobbly since its establishment because it was built on quicksand. The proposed replacement not only addresses the glaring shortcomings in JTB, but also retains the joint control of the body by the federal and state governments. It also seeks the creation of the office of Tax Ombudsto resolve all complaints that may arise from the operations of JRB.

Today, we cannot run away from the cryptocurrency ecosystem because it is the in-thing. But as it stands in Nigeria today, there is no law that regulates cryptocurrency operations. One key highlight of the Nigeria Tax Bill is that it seeks a legislation to regulate the digital currency market said to be worth $1trillion globally. The bill, when passed into law, will arrest the revenue the country has haemorrhaged in the sector. It will be recalled that some executives of one of the biggest cryptocurrency platforms, Binance, are in court for non-payment of taxes among other offences.

The Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill is primarily proposing a change of name for the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to the Nigeria Revenue Service. This bill is one which seeks to correct the error of 2007 when Nigeria’s apex tax authority, FIRS, became autonomous as an operational arm of the Federal Board of Inland Revenue (FBIR). The mandate of FIRS is to administer tax laws to assess, collect and account for revenue accruable to the federation and not the Federal Government. Especially when we consider the current sharing formula on VAT revenue, only 15% goes to the Federal Government. The remaining 85% is shared between the states and the local government areas.

Today, tax revenue from FIRS is the main reason the 36 states and the local government councils smile to the banks monthly during their Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting. A total of N17.8trillion accrued to the Federation Account between January and July this year. FIRS tax revenue alone contributed N11.7trillion, representing 65.8 percent of the total money disbursed to the federal, state and local government councils to meet their needs.

Giving such a critical agency an appellation which suggests it is collecting tax solely for Federal Government is improper and must be corrected. Another error in the current name is contained in the word ‘Inland’ which restricts the agency to the collection of taxes within the interior territory of the country. Nigeria has huge revenue to collect from offshore transactions and only a repeal of FIRS (Establishment) Act 2007 to pave the way for the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act can make that happen. Those suggesting that the proposed name change will translate to other revenue agencies being subsumed or merged with NRS need to get copies of the bill to clear their doubt.

The general principle of the four tax bills is not just to modernise the tax system in the country, but also to ensure that relief is created for ordinary Nigerians and businesses. And so, for insulating the poor from VAT payment through exemptions of good and services that directly impact their lives, for making VAT neutral for businesses through enabling deduction of input tax from out VAT, President Tinubu has demonstrated fidelity to his commitment that government policies must allow the poor to breathe and not suffocate. Tinubu deserves to be applauded as a leader who listens to the yearnings of the citizens.

Regime Change Accusation Against The Guardian Newspaper is Unfounded’

By The Management of The Guardian Newspaper.

The Guardian newspaper has expressed deep concern regarding the press statement issued on October 26, 2024, by Mr Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. This statement was in response to our lead story titled “Misery, Harsh Policies Driving Nigerians to Desperate Choices,” published on October 25, 2024.

In his statement, Mr Onanuga alleged that our report incited unrest against President Bola Tinubu’s administration and suggested a regime change disguised as journalism.

We categorically reject these accusations, labelling them as a misrepresentation of our reporting. Contrary to the Special Adviser’s claims, our story presents a well-researched, balanced account of Nigeria’s political landscape, devoid of any incitement or hostility toward the government.

Our publication aims to reflect the concerns of Nigerians from diverse backgrounds regarding the country’s pressing issues, urging the government to take necessary actions to address these challenges. There is no endorsement or suggestion of a military takeover, as alleged by Mr Onanuga.

The Guardian operates independently, with allegiance only to the principles of journalism and the integrity of Nigeria. For over 40 years, we have prioritised truth, accuracy, objectivity, and accountability, promoting justice and fair play in our coverage of events.

It is crucial to clarify that the disputed article serves as a scorecard of Nigeria’s democratic journey, encouraging the government to fulfil its constitutional duty to ensure the security and welfare of its citizens.

The piece also aims to dissuade the youth from seeking unconstitutional alternatives to governance. We have explicitly advocated for civilian rule while rejecting military regimes as solutions to national issues.

An impartial assessment of our publication would reveal our commitment to responsible journalism, driven by patriotic motives. Our report is not intended to undermine the current government but to uphold the accountability of governance, as enshrined in Section 22 of the 1999 Constitution.

We recall President Tinubu’s “Action Plan for a Better Nigeria,” which highlighted the need for innovative solutions to the realities facing our nation. Our story aligns with this vision, urging the administration to engage with the populace’s concerns meaningfully.

Globally, the press serves as a watchdog of society and must be allowed to fulfil this role without obstruction. The freedom of the press is a constitutionally guaranteed right that must be defended by all political leaders, including the President. Nnamdi Kanu’s Detention: Nigeria Has Igbo Problem – Sowore

The continuous detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has drawn sharp criticism from Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 general election.

Sowore argues that Kanu’s situation reflects a deeper issue within the Nigerian state regarding its treatment of the Igbo people.

In an interview with Rudolf Okonkwo on 90Minutes Africa on Sunday, Sowore stated, “Nigeria has an Igbo problem. It’s like when a father is dying; they will tell their children, ‘I have a problem with Igbo people; please continue from there.’” He described Kanu as a victim of the post-civil war treatment meted out to the Igbo.

Kanu initially escaped from Nigeria in 2017 while on bail, facing terrorism charges in a Federal High Court after an invasion of his residence by the Nigerian military. He was arrested in Kenya on June 27, 2021, through collaboration between Interpol and Nigerian security officials and was subsequently brought back to Nigeria in what was termed extraordinary rendition.

On October 22, 2022, the Abuja Court of Appeal declared Kanu’s extradition illegal and ordered his immediate release. However, the Nigerian government has continued to hold him, filing an appeal at the Supreme Court against the Appellate Court’s order.

While the Supreme Court acknowledged the illegality of Kanu’s extradition, it ruled that this alone was insufficient to secure his release, allowing his continued detention while he faces seven counts related to terrorism at the Federal High Court.

Sowore, who has also experienced detention by the Department of State Services (DSS), expressed disappointment that the Bola Tinubu administration has continued the policies of the previous administration regarding Kanu. “I expected that the first act of Tinubu in office would have been to release Nnamdi Kanu. But the fact that it got worse shows that there is a kind of conspiracy going on,” he stated.

He further revealed that some Igbo elites were complicit in Kanu’s ongoing detention, recalling discussions where the release was postponed until after the election. “And now, after the election, the devil seems to have intervened more strongly,” Sowore added.

Sowore expressed his lack of confidence in the Nigerian judicial system, claiming it is heavily influenced by the president.

Kanu is the official prisoner of whoever is the president of Nigeria. They report his condition to the president daily,” he explained. “There is no way he’s going to get justice from the courts unless the Nigerian state decides to let him go.

The incident took place on 15 October 2024, after Ariyo allegedly made a comment about a dustbin that a teacher had brought to his class.

According to information shared by activist Adetoun on social media, the teacher had instructed the class not to break the dustbin, to which Ariyo reportedly responded that the item had been bought with students’ funds. The remark reportedly angered the teacher, who then informed the school principal, leading to Ariyo receiving disciplinary action.

The punishment reportedly involved 24 strokes of the cane and 162 frog jumps, administered under the principal’s instruction. During this process, Ariyo reportedly collapsed. Witnesses claimed that the teacher and other school staff present delayed in taking him to the hospital. When Ariyo was eventually taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Idi-Aba, he was pronounced dead on 25 October 2024.

A police source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident. The source explained that the police intervention was necessary to manage tension within the community in the wake of Ariyo’s death.
