NPFL Restores Players’ Licenses Of Seven Clubs

The Nigeria Premier Football League has restored the licenses of newly registered players of seven clubs from the nine defaulters.

The clubs are Enyimba, Plateau United, El-Kanemi Warriors, Bayelsa United, Lobi Stars, Akwa United and Heartland.

The NPFL Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi disclosed this in a statement sent to the clubs.

Owumi commended the clubs for complying swiftly with the requirements, which will enable them to play to their full strength.

The NPFL pointed out that Akwa United’s licenses were restored on the directive of the NFF pending ongoing further investigations into their case.

Abia Warriors, Katsina United, and Kwara United are yet to comply with the directives.

The government of Rivers State has reacted to the ruling of the Federal High Court ruling in Abuja on Wednesday, October 30, which ordered the cessation of local government allocations, stating that the ruling was anticipated due to various developments during the court process.

Rivers state Commissioner for Information, Joe Johnson, on Wednesday , October 30 said;, “When the trial Judge refused to add the 23 Council Chairmen as parties, declined the State’s request to change its lawyer, and overruled our jurisdiction objection, it was evident, we saw it coming ” he stated.

Johnson revealed that the state government had appealed the decision, expressing confidence that the Court of Appeal would overturn the ruling.

Wednesday’s judgment by a Federal High Court in Abuja, ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to halt all payments to the state local government councils.

This comes as the power play between former Rivers governor Nyesom Wike and his former protege and current Rivers governor, Siminialayi Fubara, continues to exacerbate.

FCCPC Uncovers Cartels Inflating Food Prices In Nigeria

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, claimed it has uncovered cartels responsible for prices of goods and food manipulation in Nigeria.

The commission’s Executive Vice Chairman, Tunji Bello, disclosed this recently while addressing stakeholders during a one-day engagement on exploitative pricing in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

This comes as Bello highlighted how in the poultry sector, influential players are dictating prices, severely impacting smaller producers.

“Small poultry owners previously sold a day-old chick for between N480 and N590 and still made a profit. However, the entry of two major market players changed that,” he stated, choosing to withhold their names.

“They operate in a mafia-like manner. If you attempt to negotiate with one, they tip off the others, ensuring uniform pricing,” Bello lamented.

According to him, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s economic interventions, including the removal of tariffs on food imports, value-added tax on pharmaceuticals and medical devices, tax waivers for businesses and public transport, and facilitating easy credit for converting vehicles from petrol to CNG, should have impacted the prices of goods and services.

“It is only fair that our businessmen and traders share the benefits of these measures with consumers through reduced prices,” Bello stated.

This comes as Nigeria’s inflation increased to 32.70 percent in September, resulting in high cost of living among Nigerians.

On Wednesday, during her Senate screening, ministerial nominee Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, recounted her challenging experience as Nigeria’s ambassador to Spain, revealing that she lived in a hotel for a year due to the dilapidated state of the Nigerian embassy in Madrid.

President Bola Tinubu nominated Bianca Odumegu-Ojukwu as the Minister of State, Foreign Affairs.

Speaking at screening before the Senate on Wednesday, she detailed how the embassy’s deteriorated condition did not align with Nigeria’s image abroad and how it motivated her to lead an extensive refurbishment project.

Bianca said, “I would like to say that my past records speak for me. As an ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain, I spent an entire year in one hotel room because when I got to Spain, the mission building was in such an appalling condition.”

She recounted that the building’s ruin was particularly embarrassing given its location.

“The embassy was located very close to the upscale estate of Galagao, where people would pass by on their way to various events and matches.

“It was disheartening that this decadent structure represented Nigeria in such a prestigious area,” she stated.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu explained that she took immediate steps to address the issues, organising significant repairs and preservation efforts to overhaul not only the mission building but also the ambassador’s residence and other Nigerian-owned properties in Spain.

“The Nigerian embassy in Madrid that you see today is the product of my time in that country,” she said, noting that her focus was to restore Nigeria’s image to one that “truly deserves a designation of outstanding.”

She also highlighted the ongoing challenges Nigerian embassies face worldwide due to limited funding, which often constrains ambassadors in performing much-needed maintenance.

She added, “In most missions, because of no more funding, most ambassadors are constrained when it comes to carrying out refurbishments.

This shortage of funds, she said, ”prevents embassies from showcasing Nigeria’s stature, impacting the country’s standing on the global stage.”

“It is unfortunate because a lot of embassies are going through this situation, and it has, to a large extent, diminished our standing around the world,” she added.

Emphasising the importance of respectable diplomatic representations, Odumegwu-Ojukwu urged the Nigerian government to prioritize embassy maintenance under the current administration.

She cited the nation’s foreign policy objectives of promoting democracy, development, and the Nigerian diaspora as critical areas that require embassies with dignified facilities.

“This is something that the government, under this president, should look into,” she said, pointing out that embassies often host international delegations, study tours, and exchanges, making respectable surroundings crucial.

“It is imperative that when you are in those exchanges, you meet your patrons and colleagues in environments that reflect Nigeria’s true standing,” she said, concluding her remarks with a plea for urgent intervention.

Court Dismisses Pro-Wike Lawmakers’ Suit Against INEC, PDP as Amaewhule-Led Group Secretly Withdraws Affidavit Confirming Defection to APC

Hon Martin Chike Amaewhule-led pro-Wike lawmakers in Rivers State have secretly withdrawn part of an affidavit they sworn to at the Federal High Court in Abuja, confirming their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), SaharaReporters has learnt.

The lawmakers’ defection followed a rift between Nyesom Wike, the immediate former Governor of Rivers State and his predecessor, Siminalayi Fubara. The defected lawmakers are loyal to Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

Breaking: Tinubu Appoints Oluyede as Acting Chief of Army Staff

Sources told SaharaReporters the lawmakers were at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday to secretly withdraw part of the affidavit, where Amaewhule swore on oath in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/1681/2023, that he and 26 other lawmakers in Rivers State House of Assembly were constrained to defect and join the APC on December 5, 2023.

The defection was blamed on the state of “uncertainty and confusion” in their former party – PDP.

SaharaReporters gathered that they succeeded in withdrawing the affidavit, the basis upon which they got court orders that kept them in office.

Following their defection and swearing of oath at the high court, the lawmakers were also received by officials of their new party, APC.

“Today, pro-Wike lawmakers went to the Federal High Court to withdraw the affidavit they swore in court that that they have defected from PDP to APC.

“They quietly withdrew the affidavit. On the basis of this affidavit, they got court orders to keep their seats and were received by the APC,” a top judicial source told SaharaReporters.

In the suit, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Rivers State House of Assembly, Clerk of Rivers State House of Assembly, Inspector General of Police and Department of State Services (DSS) were listed as the 1st to 6th Defendants/Respondents respectively.

Amaewhule and others had sworn in Paragraph 14, forming part of affidavit secretly withdrawn that “faced with the state of uncertainty and confusion in the 2nd Defendant caused by the division in the political party, the Plaintiffs were constrained to defect and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) on 5th December, 2023 as stated above”.

Similarly, in Paragragh 15, they had sworn that “angered by the action of the Plaintiffs, the 2nd Defendant has been threatening fire and brimstone against the Plaintiffs. The 2nd Defendant has followed this up by holding a press conference addressed by the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, where the 2nd Defendant prayed the 1st Defendant to withdraw the Certificates of Return issued to the Plaintiffs and organise and hold fresh elections to fill the seats of the Plaintiffs”.

In Paragraph 16, they swore “that apart from the 2nd Defendant, persons and political parties not concerned with the defection of the Plaintiffs to the APC have also been mounting pressure on the 1st Defendant (INEC) to declare the seats of the Plaintiffs vacant”.

Amaewhule further avowed in paragraph 17, that a similar situation arose in Edo State wherein the same “2nd Defendant asked the 1st Defendant to declare the seats of 14 Members of the Edo State House of Assembly vacant, and the court resolved the matter by maintaining the status quo.

He insisted in paragraph 18 of the affidavit that unless the court restrained, “the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC which is 1st Defendant and or the 3rd Defendant (Rivers State House of Assembly) will not only declare the seats of the Plaintiffs vacant, but the 1st Defendant will withdraw their Certificates of Return and prevent them from carrying out their constitutional duties and functions.”

SaharaReporters gathered that upon this affidavit in support of their motion for interlocutory injunction, which the lawmakers have just withdrawn, Hon. Justice Donatus U. Okorowo on December 15, 2023, granted an order restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Rivers State House of Assembly from declaring vacant the seats of the 27 members of the Assembly, led by Amaewhule.

Justice Donatus Okorowo, in an ex-parte ruling, also restrained INEC from conducting fresh elections to fill the seats of the 27 lawmakers, who had announced, in the legislative chamber, their defection from the PDP to the APC.

The judge gave an “order of interim injunction restraining the first and third defendants/respondents (INEC and Rivers Assembly), either by themselves, their officials, officers, servants, agents, servants, staff or privies (anyhow so-called), from declaring vacant or taking any steps whatsoever to declare vacant the seats of the plaintiffs/applicants at the Rivers State House of Assembly; from withdrawing the plaintiffs/applicants’ respective certificates of return and from conducting fresh elections to fill in the seats of the plaintiffs/applicants at the Rivers State House of Assembly, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

Edo Taskforce On Anti-Cultism Arrest Eiye, Vikings Members

The Edo State Special Taskforce on Anti-Cultism on Wednesday said some suspects have been arrested in the renewed violent clash between members of the Eiye and Vikings confraternities in the state.

DAILY POST reports that the State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare disclosed this on Wednesday at a press conference in Benin City.

Nehikhare, who is also a member of the taskforce, however, warned that there is no breathing space for cultists and cult related activities in the state.

The Taskforce which also warned cult groups against disturbing the peace of the state, advised them to consider leaving the state or get apprehended.

While condemning the killings by suspected cultists in parts of the state. He added that the recent disturbance by suspected cultists on Sunday, October 27, 2024 in Benin City was being investigated with a series of arrests already made.

He added that efforts are ongoing to apprehend other key actors and fleeing suspects.

According to him: “The Edo State Special Task Force on Anti-Cultism expressed worry over the recent disturbance by suspected cultists on Sunday, October 27, 2024 in Benin City.

“The violent clashes between rival cult groups in Benin City was being investigated with a series of arrests made, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend other key actors and fleeing suspects.

“The cult violence resulted in the loss of energetic indigenes of the state.

“Preliminary investigations indicates that the violence involved members of the Eiye and Vikings confraternities, reportedly battling for supremacy within the impacted area.

“Upon receiving intelligence about this situation, the Edo State Special Task Force on Anti-Cultism immediately intensified patrols and launched a manhunt for the key leaders of the identified groups.

“The swift and coordinated response of the task force successfully contained the violence, preventing further bloodshed and averting potential escalation.

“Patrol operations have also been reinforced in identified hotspots to forestall any resurgence of violence,” he said.

The commissioner, who assured the public and Edo residents of the safety of their lives and property, vowed that there would be no rest until every identified leader and members involved in the dastardly acts are arrested and brought to justice.

A Coalition of Professional People Living with Disabilities, (PLWDs), has expressed displeasure with President Bola Tinubu over alleged discrimination in his recent appointments to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs.

They claimed that the appointments neglected the voices and needs of PLWDs, particularly in light of their previous call for the inclusion of a female candidate in the ministry.

The group’s representative and convener of the coalition, Ismaila Sani Dabai, in a statement issued on Wednesday, expressed deep disappointment over the selection of two male candidates from the same state for key leadership roles, stating that such a decision undermines the principles of inclusivity and equity essential for effective governance.

They emphasized that being disabled does not equate to being voiceless and demanded recognition and respect for their contributions to society.

“We are citizens of this country, created by God just like everyone else. Our disabilities do not diminish our worth or our ability to contribute meaningfully to discussions that affect our lives and communities.

“Our earlier request for the appointment of a qualified female leader in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs was not just a plea for gender representation; it was a call for someone who understands the unique challenges faced by PLWDs, particularly women with disabilities.

“As a community, we believe that the humanitarian sector requires diverse leadership to effectively address the complexities of social issues, especially those impacting vulnerable populations, including PLWDs.

“Female leaders often bring perspectives and experiences that can lead to more comprehensive and empathetic responses to humanitarian needs.

“We therefore urged President Tinubu to reconsider his appointments and to ensure that the appointment reflect the diversity of Nigeria’s population.

“It is crucial for leaders in the Humanitarian Ministry to understand the intricacies of our challenges, because women, especially those who are disabled, can offer invaluable insights into creating policies and programs that truly serve all Nigerians.

“We ask President Tinubu to listen to us, to include us, and to ensure that his appointments reflect the richness of our nation’s diversity.

“It is time for the government to stand by its commitment to inclusion and equality for all, including those of us with disabilities,” Ismaila stressed.

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Major General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede as the acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), effective immediately. This appointment follows the medical leave of the current Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who is reportedly receiving treatment abroad.

General Lagbaja are alumni of the Nigerian Defence Academy’s 39th Regular Course, with Oluyede having risen to the rank of Major-General in September 2020.

U-17 WWC: Sanusi Applauds Flamingos Despite Quarter-Final Exit

Secretary General of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, Mohammed Sanusi has lauded the Flamingos despite their quarter-final elimination at the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

The Flamingos won all their three group stage matches.

The Bankole Olowookere side, however, fell 2-0 to USA in the quarter-final.

Sanusi said the girls need to be encouraged despite their failure to make it to the last four.

“The Nigeria Football Federation is proud of the Flamingos and the efforts they put into the competition. Two years ago, they defeated the USA on penalties at the same stage, on their way to collecting the bronze medals. That is football for you,” Sanusi told thenff.com.

“If you watched their games, you will agree that the girls put up a great fight in every match. They swept through their group phase, collecting the maximum nine points and scoring nine goals while conceding only one. They created several chances against the USA but were quite unlucky. This is a good team and the players must be encouraged going forward. I believe a good number of them have the skill, temperament and discipline to progress to the U20 squad.”

The Flamingos arrived the country from Dominican Republic on Tuesday.

Gunmen Attack Ebonyi Community, Kill Middle-Aged Man

Gunmen have attacked Ngbo Amaka village in Ngbo, Ohaukwu LGA of Ebonyi State, killing a 48-year-old man, Mr Micheal Nnaji, a native of Amuri in Nkanu LGA of Enugu State, who resided in the area.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the incident on Wednesday.

Ukandu said on getting the information, he contacted the Ohaukwu Police Divisional Headquarters and a team immediately moved to the scene of the incident for investigation.

He added that he is yet to be briefed on the details of the incident and assured that the State Police Command will carry out an in-depth investigation into the crime and ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and prosecuted.

The deceased, a businessman and a member of the local security in Ngbo community, was said to have been shot twice by the hoodlums who invaded his business area at about 9:45 pm Tuesday night.

A family source who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the hoodlums, numbering two, operated with a motorcycle and were also masked.

“We were at the shop, at about 9:45 pm, two young men zoomed into the compound wearing masks, one came in from the front door while the other came in from the back door.

“Immediately, they made their way to the parlour where Mike was relaxing and shot him twice.

“Immediately I heard the gunshot, I rushed out from the back and one of them grabbed me, collected my phone and was dragging me to the house but as God will have it, I freed myself from him and ran to the nearby compound.

“As a result of the gunshot, most of the residents of the area all scampered for safety, leaving him and the hoodlums. After the shooting him, the hoodlums set him ablaze inside the house and zoomed off.

“Out of fear, nobody came around for his rescue and his corpse was severely burnt. Other household items including two deep freezers, television sets, chairs, tables, fan, cooking utensils, cash and other items were all completely burnt.”

Man Allegedly Def!les The 2-Year-Old Daughter Of His Own Girlfriend In Delta

A Nigerian man, Mr Okiemute Kasia, has been remanded in prison in Delta State.

A Delta State High Court sitting in Otu-Jeremi in Ughelli South Local Government Area ordered the remand of the man in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service in Okere, Warri, for allegedly def!ling his girlfriend’s two-year-old daughter (name withheld).

The court, presided over by Hon. Justice A. A. Onojovwo, ordered the remand pending trial based on the evidence available.

The suspect was arraigned by the police on charges of alleged def!lement, Daily Post reports.

In a statement today, a human rights group, Initiative for Social Rights Concerns and Advancement (ISRCA), also known as “No Justice, No Peace,” led by National Coordinator Comrade Derrick Oritsematisan Agberen, stated that the suspect’s identity would be withheld from the public until he is either convicted or acquitted by the court.

The group expressed gratitude to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Divisional Crime Officer (DCO 1) of the Otu-Jeremi Division, and the Ughelli Area Command for their efforts in seeking justice for the young victim.

It is recalled that on October 10, 2024, ISRCA raised the alarm on its Facebook page regarding the incident, alleging that the child was seriously harmed by the suspect.

The group, led by its National Coordinator, Comrade (Amb.) Derrick Oritsematisan Agberen, immediately acted to ensure the suspect’s arrest by the Otu-Jeremi Police Division before his case was transferred to the Ughelli Area Command.

In July, the Amaewhule-led assembly barred Governor Fubara from accessing public funds due to his failure to submit the budget.

In contrast, Oko-Jumbo’s faction, which claims that Amaewhule and 24 other members are no longer part of the House, has urged INEC to conduct by-elections to fill the disputed seats.
