Nigeria @64: FG Plans Low-Key Celebration As Nigerian Youths Protest Against Hunger

While the Federal Government is planning a low-key Independence Day anniversary celebration, the EndBadGovernance protest organizers have also concluded plans to stage protests across the country.

DAILY POST reports that for the second time after President Bola Tinubu took over the leadership mantle in 2023, the FG on Thursday, September 26 announced that the October 1 Independence Day would be on a low key basis due to the mood of the nation.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume told newsmen that President Tinubu’s government was aware of and sympathized with all Nigerians over the economic conditions they were passing through, hence the reason for a low-key celebration.

However, some activists clamouring to end bad governance in Nigeria are seeing the event as a fertile ground to continue their protest against the high cost of living and other lingering challenges bedeviling the nation.

    Economic hardship

For most Nigerians, the economic situation of the country has aggravated to an unbearable stage.

DAILY POST reports that currently, there is no end in sight to the untoward hardship imposed on Nigerians from May 2023 after President Bola Tinubu announced the removal of fuel subsidy.

On Friday, September 27, the National Bureau of Statistics revealed that the prices of Beans, Rice, Bread, Egg have continued to rise across the country.

NBS, in its data, indicated that one Kilogram of Beans rose by 271.55 percent on a year-on-year basis to N2,574.63 in August 2024 from N692.95 recorded the same period last year.

Also on a month-on-month basis, the price of Beans increased to 5.31 percent to N2,444.81 in July 2024.

According to NBS, the average price of 1kg Local rice sold loose went up by 148.41 percent from N 737.11 in August 2023 to N1,831.05 in August 2024, while there was an increase of 3.65 percent on a month-on-month basis.

It also stated that the price of medium size eggs (12 pieces) experienced significant price increases by N121.92 percent from N1,031.55 in August of last year to N2,289.19 in August 2024.

Our correspondent gathered on Saturday that the price of a 50kg bag of rice has jerked up to about N100,000.

    FearlessInOctober protests

The protest tagged FearlessInOctober is an extension of the hunger protest staged in August this year when the Nigerian youths who were puzzled by the economic situation of the country stormed the streets to demand for a solution.

Although the protest turned violent and was hijacked by non-state actors with several protesters killed, the attention of leaders were drawn to the plight of the citizens.

A security company, Beacon Security Intelligence, in its August report on Nigeria’s security situation, said 30 people were killed across seven states during the EndBadGovernance protests that lasted from August 1 to 10.

According to BSI, the majority of the casualties were killed by gunshots, “possibly from law enforcement and unidentified armed actors.”

The report contradicted the claim by security agencies, especially the Nigeria Police Force, that only seven fatalities were recorded during the protest.

However, the organizers claimed that President Bola Tinubu had given deaf ears to their demands, stimulating the October 1 nationwide protest.

In a statement jointly signed by the Education Rights Campaign, ERC, Movement for Fundamental Change, MFC Youth Rights Campaign, YRC, Joint Action Front, JAF, and Pan-African Consciousness Renaissance, PACOR-Nigeria, the organizers insisted that the demands raised during the August protests were not addressed.

They called on Nigerians to engage in peaceful protests against “anti-poor policies”, including the removal of fuel subsidy, which according to them has birthed the experienced being in the nation.

“As we speak, the price of fuel hovers between N900 per litre to N1900 per litre depending on which parts of the country you are.

“Meanwhile, less than two years ago, a liter of fuel did not cost more than N200 per litre. This is outrageous. This is intolerable. As a direct consequence of this increment, life has become unbearable for many Nigerian people.

“Many are starving as the increase in fuel price has also impacted food prices. Inflation has rendered the N70,000 new National Minimum Wage irrelevant and incapable of bringing any relief to Nigerian workers”, he said.

    Police, DSS issue stern warning

Ahead of the Independence Day celebration, the Lagos State Police Command and the Department of State Services, DSS have warned protesters against the breakdown of law and order.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olarenwaju Ishola, who spoke on Friday during a town hall meeting with stakeholders and other security agencies, warned trouble makers to steer clear of the state.

The Police boss, however, assured Lagos residents of police presence to maintain safety and order during planned protests.

“We are not stopping anybody from protesting, it is your legitimate right. We will protect all so that miscreants do not hijack it, ” he said.

Similarly, the Director of the Department of State Service in Lagos State, Dapo Amao, said that though it is the right of citizens to protest or express their displeasure against the government, it must be done in a civilised way.

It’s your duty to protect protesters – Organizers tell security agencies

Despite warnings by the security agencies, organizers of the planned protest have vowed not to back down.

One of the key organizers of the protest, a popular human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore told DAILY POST on Saturday that the police and other security agencies have a duty to protect the intended protesters.

He said, “The security agencies are aware that there will be a nationwide action and they have a duty to protect protesters and non-protesters

“We’ve also asked our lawyer(s) to inform them to do the needful, which is basically to protect Nigerians”.

Similarly, another activist, Jerome Williams, told DAILY POST that the Nigerian youths have refused to be intimidated by the President Tinubu-led government.

According to Jerome, the arrest and subsequent trial of several hunger protesters in August was aimed at intimidating those speaking against the bad policies of the government.

He said, “they don’t like you when you speak against their anti-people policies. People are dying of hunger and they don’t care. They keep telling us that things will be better, is it when everyone is dead that life will be better?

“All they want to do is to intimidate us. They arrest protesters as though they have seen the terrorists causing problems in the north. Protesters are not your problem. Address the demands and make life bearable for people and everybody will leave you alone.

“It is not like anybody wants to protest, they are the ones pushing us to do it. Bring the price of fuel down, stabilize the exchange rate and subsidize some food items at least for a while then we will leave you alone.

“A bag of rice is now N100k, that is about 30 percent higher than the minimum wage of an average Nigerian worker. In the private sector, there are people receiving below 50k per month. How do you expect them to cope?

“We will continue to protest until they hear us. Nigerians don’t need to be scared of any arrest or whatever they are planning. Like they said, if you protest, you may die and if you don’t protest, hunger will still kill you so protest and die. We are ready for them”.

Murder: Enugu Families Accuse Monarch Of Fact Twisting, Insist Suspects Must Face Justice

Families of the two indigenes of Akpawfu community, in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu state, who were recently murdered in cold blood are insisting on getting justice for their departed ones.

This is as they accused a traditional ruler in the area, Igwe Christopher Nnamani of fact distortion, insisting that the monarch and those they referred to as his cohorts, have questions to answer.

They spoke in reaction to a media publication which decried the police treatment of the arrested suspects.

The families have now urged the police to arrest and interrogate the traditional ruler.

DAILY POST recalls that the deceased, namely- Chief Israel Nnaji and Chukwudi Nweke Oka were gruesomely murdered in their respective homes in June and July this year by gunmen who invaded their homes.

While late Nnaji was murdered on the 21st of June, 2024, Oka was killed on 16th of July 2024.

The families hinted that shortly after the ugly incident, the police arrested six suspects in connection with the heinous crime.

They included Sunday Nwobodo Edeaniafu alias (Devil Spoon) “M”, Onyeka Nnaji (aka Apiawa) “M”, Nnamdi Nnam (aka Junior)”M” (4) Okenwa Chigozie (aka ochiwar)”M”, Uwabunkeonye Nnamai (aka Asaba) “M” and Nnaemeka Nnamani (aka Nweze) “M”, and they were arraigned in court on 19/09/2024, while Echerem Paul and others were still at large.

They accused the traditional ruler and a rights group of misinforming members of the public through the media.

A statement jointly issued on Sunday by both families and made available to journalists in Enugu also accused the royal father of allegedly shielding the arrested suspects under the guise that they were not criminals but operatives of the community’s neighborhood watch group.

The document signed on behalf of the two families by Chief Godwin Ede, and Chief Ugochukwu Nnaji disagreed with the monarch on his claim that perpetrators of the crime were aliens to the community.

According to the families, “The Police are intensifying all efforts to apprehend the escaping others and charge them to court as well for acts of terrorism, banditry, armed robbery and gruesome murder of Chief Israel Nnaji and Chukwudi Nweke Oka.

“Families of the two murdered men considered it expedient to respond after duly briefing our legal team who directed us to respond and sate as follows:

“It is curious and laughable that the author of the so called publication claimed to have written to the Inspector General of Police seeking Justice for detained suspects who have allegedly been tortured and shot on their legs by the police in Enugu.

“This counsel purportedly seeking for justice failed and refused to disclose, who briefed him and cross-check his facts properly before rushing to the press to embarrass the police and put up such false and misleading publication that is filled with falsehood, distortion of facts and deceit.

“The said publication is in effectual to counter police diligent investigation being carried out by the Octopus Squad of the Enugu State Command, who have painstakingly sanitized the Akpawfu Community feasted with crime and criminality for the past three years, and where recently more than twenty people, killed and buried in same circumstance Chief Israel Nnaji and Chukwudi Nweke Okah were killed.

“Police investigation so far conducted by the Octopus Squad Enugu State Command has fully established that the person mentioned above have committed the crime as charged and have been a terror in Akpawfu Community, committing all kinds of heinous crime of Armed Robbery, Murder Arson and arson under the guise and cover of being a Community Security Neighborhood Watch.”

Narrating what happened further, they said; “On the 21st day of July 2024, Mrs Coredelia Nnaji wife of Chief Israel Nnaji, reported that at about 01:30 am, that she heard the painful voice of her husband, Chief Israel Nnaji, now deceased, begging the attackers not to kill him.

“As she opened the door to see what was happening to the husband, one of the attackers standing near the door shouted at her to lie down facing the ground; otherwise, she would be killed instantly.

“The attacker picked up a piece of iron rod and started hitting her all over her body and left her with severe pains, the same attackers collected her valuables including money and phones and left for her husband’s room where she met other gang members already matcheting the man and he joined them in hitting the husband with the iron rod and finally killed him, leaving him in his pool of blood.

“They further ransacked his room and made away with some undisclosed amount of money and his motorcycle and escaped from the scene.

“The wife however identified two of the attackers during the operation, led by Nnamdi Nnam (aka Junior), Okenwa Chigozie (aka Ochiwar), Uwabunkeonye Nnamani (aka Asaba), Nnaemeka Nnamani (aka Nwaeze).

“Again on 16th July, 2024, the same group of miscreants led by Mr Sunday Nwobodo aka (Devil spoon) Onyekachi Nnaji aka (Apiawa) and others still at large, again attacked and killed Mr Chukwudi Nweke Oka in his house.

“Akpawfu community is no longer comfortable with this situation as the youths are now restive and ready for a showdown.

“Sequel to this heinous murder of these two prominent members of the community, the case was first reported at Amuagunze Police Station, followed by raising a petition to the Commissioner of Police Enugu and the Inspector General of Police for their necessary directives after which the matter was referred to the Command Octopus Squad to handle.

“The six arrested suspects were thoroughly screened, investigated and fully indicted and now charged to Magistrate Court Enugu with six counts charges.

“On 19/09/2024, however, the trial Magistrate declined jurisdiction and remanded the defendants to the Correctional Centre Enugu, while the case file was ordered to be sent to Director of Public Prosecution for review and prosecution in the High Court, the case was then adjourned to 4th October, 2024 for report of update from DPP.

“It is unfortunate to state that the authors of the publication and Igwe Christopher Nnamani lack knowledge of the operational strategy of the Police and their Rules of engagement.”

When contacted via his cell phone, Igwe Nnamani denied any wrongdoing, stating that his only sin was that he didn’t keep quiet and watch policemen treat his subjects currently in custody like common criminals, even when they are still presumed innocent.

He maintained that those arrested by the police over the alleged killing of the two natives were operatives of the community’s neighborhood watch, and not criminals or members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, as being alleged.

The traditional ruler, who alleged that the arrested suspects were shot by the police in the cell, added that they also made confessional statements under duress.

He decried the dumping of the suspects in a police cell for 19 days, before charging them to court, insisting that they were not being treated fairly by the security operatives.

As a traditional ruler, he said he would always speak the truth in the community, no matter whose ox is gored

October 1 Protesters Give Tinubu’s Govt Condition to Cancel Demonstration (Full List)

October 1 Protesters Present Demands to Tinubu’s Government, Threaten Nationwide Demonstration

Antigovernment protests under the banner “End Bad Governance” are set to take place across Nigeria on October 1, coinciding with the country’s 64th Independence Day celebration. Protesters, primarily young Nigerians, have issued demands to President Bola Tinubu’s administration, stating that they will cancel the demonstrations only if the government reinstates the fuel subsidy and addresses other key issues.

Nigeria at 64: What Is the Nation’s Greatest Achievement?

Rising Tensions Ahead of October 1 Protests

The protests are expected to unfold in major city centres, particularly near government buildings and transport hubs. There is a heightened security presence across the nation in anticipation of potential clashes between protesters and security forces. The risk of confrontation is further elevated if authorities decide to ban the gatherings, as protest organizers have vowed to continue their demonstrations regardless of any restrictions imposed by the government.

    Key Demands of the Protesters

The organizers, who previously led antihardship demonstrations in August, have articulated several demands from the Tinubu government:

Reinstatement of Fuel Subsidy: One of the most significant issues fueling the protests is the removal of the petrol subsidy, which was announced by President Tinubu in his inaugural speech on May 29, 2023. Since the subsidy’s removal, fuel prices have surged from around N184 per litre to over N1,000 in many parts of the country. This spike has triggered a sharp rise in the cost of food and basic commodities, deepening the economic hardship faced by Nigerians.

Reform of INEC: Protesters are calling for immediate reforms to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure more transparent and credible elections in the future.

Reform of EFCC: They are also pushing for reforms within the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to enhance its fight against corruption.

Amendment of the Constitution: The demand for constitutional reforms reflects the desire for a legal framework that better serves the interests of all Nigerians.

Reduction of Tinubu’s Cabinet and Cost of Governance: Protesters argue that the government must reduce its expenses by cutting down on the size of the cabinet and lowering the overall cost of governance.

Unconditional Release of August Protesters: The demonstrators also insist on the release of individuals who were arrested during the August antigovernment protests.

Government Response and Efforts to Prevent the Protest

The Tinubu administration is reportedly taking steps to prevent the October 1 protests from escalating. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed that the government is actively working to avoid a repeat of the August demonstrations. Despite these efforts, the organizers of the “Fearless October 1” protest remain resolute, insisting that they will not be deterred by police, the Department of State Services (DSS), or the military.

In a formal letter to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, the protest organizers requested security for the demonstrations, emphasizing that peaceful protest is a fundamental right protected by the Nigerian constitution.

    Looking Ahead

As Nigeria celebrates its 64th Independence Day, the protests highlight the deep frustration many citizens feel about the country’s economic challenges and governance issues. Whether the government meets the protesters’ demands or takes more aggressive steps to suppress the demonstrations remains to be seen. However, with tensions already high, the coming days could prove crucial in shaping the future political landscape of the country.

  • Nigeria at 64: What Is the Nation’s Greatest Achievement?

Nigeria at 64: What Is the Nation’s Greatest Achievement?

As Nigeria marks its 64th Independence Day on Tuesday, October 1, the question of the nation’s greatest achievement remains a subject of debate. One prominent opinion points to Nigeria’s enduring democratic rule since 1999 as its most significant milestone.

In an exclusive interview with Legit News political commentator Okanlawon Gaffar offered his perspective, emphasizing the importance of the country’s uninterrupted democratic governance for over two decades. He highlighted that, since gaining independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960, Nigeria has experienced significant challenges, including a series of military regimes, civil war, and political instability.

However, Gaffar stressed that the continuous democratic elections and peaceful transitions of power since 1999, without military intervention, represent a critical achievement for the country. According to him, “A long stream of democratic rule since 1999 where we have been able to have elections consistently without military interjection” is a major success.

The Journey to 64 Years of Independence

Nigeria’s path to self-governance began with the leadership of its first prime minister, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, who played a pivotal role in the nation’s transition to independence in 1960. However, the years that followed were fraught with regional and ethnic tensions, culminating in the collapse of the First Republic in 1966. This marked the beginning of military rule, with General Aguiyi Ironsi’s coup ushering in decades of military dominance.

Subsequent military leaders, such as General Yakubu Gowon, who led Nigeria during the Biafran Civil War, General Murtala Mohammed, General Olusegun Obasanjo, General Muhammadu Buhari, and others, held power during this period of political instability. Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, under President Obasanjo, ushered in the Fourth Republic, ending nearly two decades of military rule.

    Democratic Milestones Since 1999

Since the restoration of democracy in 1999, Nigeria has seen successive civilian administrations, including Presidents Umaru Yar’Adua, Goodluck Jonathan, Muhammadu Buhari, and now Bola Tinubu. While challenges such as insecurity, economic hardship, and corruption persist, Nigeria’s democratic framework has provided a platform for addressing these complex issues.

Gaffar’s perspective underscores the significance of Nigeria’s long-standing democratic process, which he considers the foundation for building a more stable and prosperous future. For a country with a history of military takeovers, the ability to conduct free and fair elections for over two decades is a major accomplishment.

Challenges and Progress Under Tinubu’s Government

Ahead of the 64th Independence Day celebrations, President Bola Tinubu’s administration faces mounting pressure to highlight its successes amidst a backdrop of economic difficulties and public discontent. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has pointed to key initiatives such as local government autonomy and the roll-out of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses as evidence of progress.

Despite these efforts, Nigerians continue to grapple with issues of hunger, inflation, and economic uncertainty. The road ahead remains complex, but the nation’s sustained commitment to democracy is widely regarded as a source of hope for the future.

As Nigeria reflects on its 64-year journey, the nation’s resilience in maintaining democratic governance, especially after years of military rule, stands as one of its greatest accomplishments.

Fubara Fires Back at Wike: Loyalty Has Limits, Critics Will Need Psychiatric Help Soon

… I will not give my liver or kidney to anybody in the name of loyalty.

The latest news in Nigeria now, is that the Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has responded sharply to accusations made by his predecessor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. Fubara declared on Sunday that while he stands for what is right, his loyalty has limits, asserting he would not “give his liver or kidney to anybodyin the name of loyalty.

This remark, delivered during an Inter-denominational Church Thanksgiving Service in Port Harcourt as part of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebration, is widely seen as a direct rebuttal to Wike’s recent statements. Wike had accused Fubara of turning against him and others who supported his election after he became governor.

Fubara, however, remained adamant about his stance. “I belong to that school of thought that if I am the only person that needs to stand on that side of right, I will stand there,” he said. “I cannot give my kidney or liver to anybody. I won’t. If that is the only reason for me to be loyal, I will not be.”

The governor also refuted Wike’s claim that he was behind an alleged attempt to bomb the venue of a civic reception held in honor of the minister by the Rivers Ijaw People’s Council in Port Harcourt. Fubara firmly denied the accusation, stating that he had never instructed any security agency to engage in illegal activities.

    Defending His Administration

Fubara took the opportunity to highlight the achievements of his administration, countering claims that he had done little for Rivers State. He pointed to several projects, including the N200 billion Port Harcourt Ring Road, the N225 billion Trans-Kalabari Road, and the construction of a General Hospital that includes a psychiatric wing. The governor also remarked that those criticizing his efforts might soon require psychiatric care themselves.

“It is this same Fubara that is building a General Hospital, which I also included a Psychiatric Hospital because they will need it very soon,” Fubara quipped. He went on to claim that his administration had accomplished more in one year than Wike’s did in eight, adding, “It is only an empty container that makes noise.”

    Subtle Jabs and Political Allegiances

Fubara also took a veiled shot at Wike’s continued public outcry, describing noise-making as a sign of lost relevance. “Anybody that is making noise for recognition, it is a sign that he has lost it,” he remarked.

Despite the ongoing tension, Fubara affirmed his commitment to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and stressed the importance of peaceful elections. He concluded by reiterating his administration’s focus on the welfare of Rivers State citizens, promising to continue initiatives aimed at improving the state’s infrastructure and economic standing.

As the feud between the governor and his predecessor escalates, Rivers State remains a focal point in Nigerian politics, with both leaders maintaining their positions on loyalty, governance, and development.

Understanding Dollar to Naira Black Market Exchange Rate.

    What is the Black Market?
The black market is an unofficial exchange channel where currencies are traded without government regulation. Due to high demand and limited supply, this market often offers more competitive rates.

Why Do People Use the Black Market?

    • Favorable Rates: Higher than official rates.
    • Accessibility: Easier to obtain foreign currency without stringent regulatory requirements.

    Factors Influencing Black Market Rates

    Economic Policies:
Government decisions on interest rates, inflation control, and forex regulations by the CBN directly affect the naira’s value. These policies can stabilize or destabilize the exchange rates.

    Supply and Demand:
The availability of foreign currency versus its demand significantly influences exchange rates. A shortage of foreign currency or high demand leads to naira depreciation.

    Political Stability:
Geopolitical events and internal political stability affect investor confidence. Political unrest or uncertainty can cause the naira to depreciate, while stability strengthens it.

    Global Economic Conditions:
Global market conditions, such as oil prices, international economic trends, and global inflation rates, influence the naira’s value. For instance, a significant drop in oil prices negatively impacts Nigeria’s economy.

Comparing Dollar to Naira Official and Black Market Rates

    Why the Disparity?

    • Supply and Demand: Limited availability in the official market drives people to the black market.
    • Regulatory Restrictions: CBN imposes limits on forex availability, leading to higher black market rates.
    • Economic Instability: Fluctuations in oil prices and inflation prompt people to seek more favorable black market rates.

    Impact on the Economy:
    High black market rates can:

    • Inflation: Increase costs for imported goods.
    • Investment: Deter foreign investment due to economic instability.
    • Trade: Benefit exporters while imposing higher costs on importers.

    Using the Parallel Market Safely

    Tips for Transactions:

This is as the family has challenged South East Governors and other stakeholders from the zone to show leadership by uniting and aggressively pressing for Kanu’s freedom.

    Nnamdi Kanu

The family of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to honor and immortalize the late President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, by releasing Kanu.

This is as the family has challenged South East Governors and other stakeholders from the zone to show leadership by uniting and aggressively pressing for Kanu’s freedom.

Recall that the Ohanaeze PG who died in July will be buried on November 2nd according to an earlier statement by the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization.

According to Kanu’s family, the decision of Justice Binta Nyako formerly presiding over Kanu’s trial to recuse herself from the matter has given opportunity for political solution to the debacle.

The family explained that the withdrawal of the presiding Judge became necessary to restore international confidence in the Nigerian judiciary.

According to the family, Nyako’s refusal to comply with the orders of the Supreme Court concerning Kanu became an international embarrassment to Nigeria, hence the need for her to recuse herself.

“Our candid view on the 24th of September court proceedings is that both Binta Nyako and Morgaji Bichi acted as obstacles, not only undermining Nigeria with their rigid stances but also creating significant embarrassment for the current administration that inherited these issues. Those opposed to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release are inadvertently suggesting to the international community that this administration is ineffective.”

Prince Emmanuel Kanu in a passionate appeal on behalf of the family, urged President Tinubu to cash into the current judicial reality in Kanu’s trial to grant the IPOB Leader freedom as was granted to the Leader of Yoruba self-determination group, Sunday Igboho.

The family’s pleas in the statement made available to Vanguard said: ” The current judicial reality of the case has thrown up opportunity for a political dialogue and solution for the release of MNK and the South East political leaders must seize the moment and take advantage of it.

“We request the President to be fair and apply the same universal justice, fairness that was applied to freeing Sunday Igboho who is his tribesman.

“We pray for the happy repose of the soul of the late Ohaneze President General, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, and ask the President and SE Governors to show respect to the late Igbo leader by releasing MNK.

Kanu’s family decried the manifest exclusion of Ndigbo from the scheme of things despite being one of the three major tribes and tripods upon which Nigeria stands.

“There can never be progress and prosperity when one of the tripods of which Nigeria is built upon is intentionally marginalized and discriminated against.

“The Igbo tribe has shown good faith in the Nigerian project and it is mostly the Igbo that invests and builds wealth in every part of the nation without contemplating that they are not indigene of the local environment”.

Kanu’s family called for the full implementation of the three”RS” (Rehabilitation, Re-integration, and Restoration) of Igbo land to compensate for the ruins of the civil war.

“Is it not time to end the civil war by deploying the 3 Rs of Rehabilitation, Re-Integration and Restoration?”

The family accused South East Governors of complicity over Kanu’s continued incarceration and challenged them to come out clean.

“South East Governors why are you stopping the freedom of your own son? To what benefit is it to keep your son perpetually incarcerated? Why can’t the SE Governors take a cue from other zones who collectively worked for the freedom of their freedom fighters? South East Governors what are you afraid of?

“Governor Hope Uzodinma you’re the chairman of the SE Governors Forum and by extension the political rallying point of the South East Political leaders therefore, what is stopping you from showing leadership and leading from the front to go release your brother?

“Traditional and Religious leaders should create the atmosphere for the coming together of the South East Stakeholders to enable coherence and commonality in going to the president to demand the release of their son.”

Kanu’s family further explained that contrary to misconceptions, their son never intended to insult anybody but was only expressing his dissatisfaction with the marginalisation of his people by the Nigerian State.

”While Mazi Nnamdi Kanu may have offended some individuals with his rhetoric, it doesn’t indicate he harbors hate.

“He cares for and respects people but expresses concern when things are not handled properly. He has no interest in holding political office in Nigeria; his primary focus is on ensuring the proper development of Biafra land with equal opportunities for all.”

The family also told security agencies not to see Kanu’s release as a defeat but to consider it as a victory for all and in the interest of the entire country.

“Security Agency should see the release of MNK as a win and see MNK as a partner for the restoration of security and safety in the region”.

Jonathan flushed out Boko Haram but service chiefs can’t pick up Turji – APC Senator

Jonathan’s Military Strategy: Ndume Critiques Current Tactics Against Boko Haram.

Senator Ali Ndume, representing Southern Borno, has criticized the current military approach to combating Boko Haram, emphasizing the successful use of Private Military Consultants (PMC) during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

Speaking to journalists at a recent Senate retreat in Kano, Ndume recalled how PMCs from South Africa helped significantly reduce insurgent presence in Maiduguri in 2014.

Ndume articulated that Nigeria faces three fundamental security challenges: Boko Haram, banditry, and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He believes that if the government adopts a serious strategy, these issues could be addressed within six months to a year.

According to him, the bandits are poorly trained and equipped, often using weapons taken from the Nigerian armed forces. He questioned why the military could track high-profile individuals but struggles to locate known criminals like Turji, suggesting that fundamental issues within the military’s operations need to be addressed.

The senator commended the Chief of Army Staff for acknowledging the unrealistic expectations placed on the military, given its limited resources. He urged for increased recruitment into the Nigerian Army, highlighting the untapped potential of the nation’s youth who are eager to serve but lack opportunities.

Reflecting on the past, Ndume stated, “Boko Haram reached its last peak in 2014… They said they should give them [the PMCs] two or three months to flush Boko Haram out, and they did.” He noted that the collaboration between PMCs and the Nigerian armed forces, including local recruits from the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), was instrumental in driving the insurgents away from Maiduguri.

Despite these past successes, Ndume expressed frustration over the current inability of the military to address the ongoing threats. He criticized the military’s slow response to high-profile kidnappers and terrorists who continue to operate with impunity. “These bandits go to the extent of recording themselves and broadcasting it… yet all the service chiefs and ministers were in Sokoto and could not get Turji,” he remarked.

Ndume emphasized the necessity of not only increasing personnel numbers but also equipping the military with the right tools and technology to effectively combat insurgency and banditry. He pointed out that the Nigerian Army has the capacity and commitment to succeed but is hindered by inadequate training and resources.

He concluded by calling for serious attention to the security and welfare of citizens, stressing the need to cultivate the land and address hunger, which remains a critical issue alongside the security challenges facing Nigeria.

Israel Kills Another Senior Hezbollah Official In Lebanon Strike

In a significant escalation of conflict, Israel has confirmed the killing of Nabil Qaouq, a senior official within the Hezbollah organization, in an air strike on the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

This strike follows the recent assassination of Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, marking a devastating blow to the Iran-backed group.

Reports indicate that Qaouq was a member of Hezbollah’s central council and was killed during a strike on Saturday.

While Hezbollah has yet to officially announce Qaouq’s death, a source close to the group has confirmed the news. The Israeli military stated that its air force has been relentless, targeting “dozens” of sites associated with Hezbollah across Lebanon, with hundreds of strikes conducted over the weekend.

The intensified Israeli airstrikes have decimated Hezbollah’s leadership, following the killing of other high-ranking members, including Nasrallah’s trusted aide, Fuad Shukr, and Ibrahim Aqil, head of the elite Radwan Force.

This wave of violence has plunged Lebanon into a state of fear, raising concerns about the potential for a wider conflict in the region.

The recent hostilities were ignited after Hamas, Hezbollah’s Palestinian ally, launched an unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, leading to retaliatory military actions from Israel.

Israeli Airstrike Kills Hezbollah Leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut

Following the death of Nasrallah, a figure regarded as a symbol of resistance among his supporters, a palpable sense of grief has emerged within Hezbollah ranks, as noted by local resident Maha Karit. “We all started crying,” she told AFP in Beirut after the announcement of Nasrallah’s death.

Lebanon, already grappling with political and economic turmoil, faces a precarious situation as the bombardments have reportedly killed over 700 people within just a week. The ongoing strikes have led to significant displacement, with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati warning that up to one million people may have been forced from their homes, potentially resulting in the largest displacement movement in the country’s history.

The World Food Programme (WFP) has launched an emergency operation to support up to one million people affected by the escalating violence. WFP regional director Corinne Fleischer emphasized, “Lebanon is at a breaking point and cannot endure another war.”

In response to the attacks, Hezbollah has engaged in low-intensity retaliatory strikes against Israeli forces, including the firing of rockets towards Israeli positions in the Golan Heights. However, analysts suggest that the group may now be under pressure to demonstrate a more robust response following the loss of its leader.

International reactions have been swift. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the killing of Nasrallah has “settled the score,” while U.S. President Joe Biden referred to it as “a measure of justice for his many victims.” Conversely, Iran condemned the assassination, vowing that it would not go unanswered, and regional allies have declared public mourning for Nasrallah.

As the situation continues to evolve, the international community watches closely, hoping for a de-escalation of violence that has spiraled into a humanitarian crisis, further complicating the ongoing conflict in Gaza and beyond.

Nigerians Are Dying: Azaigba Begs Tinubu to Reintroduce Fuel Subsidy

Azaigba to Tinubu: “Reintroduce Subsidy Unless Nigerians Won’t Be Able to Breathe Again.

As Nigeria prepares to celebrate its 64th Independence Day on October 1, Professor Kenneth Azaigba from the Federal University Dutse has urged President Bola Tinubu to reinstate the fuel subsidy to alleviate the growing economic burden on citizens.

In an interview on Sunday in Makurdi, the history professor stressed that reintroducing the subsidy could help resuscitate the struggling economy and reduce the harsh effects of current policies.

Azaigba noted that the removal of the fuel subsidy, signaled by Tinubu’s proclamation that “subsidy is gone,” has contributed to the naira’s depreciation and intensified the hardship facing ordinary Nigerians.

He argued that the problem lies not with the subsidy itself, but with its mismanagement, stating that no economy, especially one as fragile as Nigeria’s, can function effectively without some form of government intervention.

“We cannot run an economy like ours without subsidies. The subsidy management regime has to be looked at. Electricity tariffs and fuel prices are unreasonably high, and without mitigating these, we won’t be able to breathe in Nigeria again,” Azaigba remarked.

He called on the government to review its economic policies, emphasizing that they should be designed to not only stabilize the economy but also improve the standard of living for Nigerians.

The professor expressed alarm at the rapid devaluation of the naira, noting its detrimental impact on everyday life.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary, Azaigba acknowledged some progress but lamented the country’s inability to fully leverage its abundant resources for economic growth.

He concluded by calling for innovative solutions to Nigeria’s current economic crisis and urged a more strategic approach to national development.

Give Tinubu More Time, Our Challenges Will Soon Be Over – Osun APC Chieftain To Nigerians

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Osun State, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has urged Nigerians to give President Bola Tinubu a little time to address the economic challenges in the country.

Oyintiloye said that with a little patience, all the challenges Nigerians were passing through would be a thing of the past

He said this while speaking with journalists on Sunday in Osogbo.

Oyintiloye, who acknowledged the fact that Nigerians are going through a tough time, claimed the president is not also sleeping but working day and night to fix the economy.

The APC Chieftain also appealed to Nigerians to remember that the economic crisis in the country was not created by the president.

He, however, said that all the economic policies that the president was putting in place might look tough but are there to place the country on the path of economic prosperity.

Oyintiloye said Tinubu assumed office when the economy was nosediving, which required systemic reforms and understanding of Nigerians.

He said while the president was gradually fixing the economy, he needed the patience, prayers, and support of all Nigerians to get things done.

Oyintiloye, who noted that the president’s economic policies had started to show results, said that though they were minimal, the future might be less challenging

He said that with the president’s focus on economic reforms and diversification, he was championing policies aimed at revitalising other sectors of the economy, particularly agriculture, manufacturing, technology, marine, and blue economy.

“Several initiatives are being implemented to improve the business environment, attract foreign direct investment, and support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

“With a little patience, things will be well again, and Nigeria will rise again,” he said.
