Full Details Emerge on Why DSS Boss Yusuf Bichi, Resigned from Tinubu Govt

Emerging details have shed light on the reasons behind Yusuf Bichi’s sudden resignation as the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, a move that has sparked widespread attention across Nigeria’s political landscape.

On Tuesday, President Tinubu made headlines by appointing Mohammed Mohammed as the new Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and Adeola Ajayi as the new head of the DSS, effectively replacing Bichi.

These appointments are said to be part of a broader strategy by the Tinubu administration to strengthen Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and kidnapping.

Sources close to the situation have revealed that Bichi’s resignation was primarily influenced by his alleged interference with the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu’s, strategy to eliminate terrorism.

Ribadu reportedly felt that Bichi’s actions were undermining his efforts to coordinate and execute the President’s directives aimed at addressing the growing security threats facing the country.

“Ribadu feels Bichi has been sabotaging his coordinating efforts to carry out the marching orders given by the President to rid the country of terrorists and kidnappers,” a source familiar with the matter disclosed.

The new DSS Director-General, Adeola Ajayi, is a seasoned operative who has risen through the ranks, holding key positions in various states, including Bauchi, Enugu, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Kogi.

His appointment is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the DSS, aligning the agency’s operations more closely with the administration’s security objectives.

The reshuffle within Nigeria’s top security apparatus underscores the Tinubu administration’s determination to revamp the country’s approach to combating internal security challenges.

As the new leadership settles into their roles, all eyes will be on how these changes impact the ongoing efforts to secure Nigeria against the persistent threats of terrorism and kidnapping.

PDP Govs Demand Separate Office For AGF

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Governors’ Forum has called for the separation of offices of the Accountant-General of the Federation, AGF, and that of the federal government.

While saying that such would remain the only way accountability could be guaranteed, the forum also urged the federal government to improve transparency in the allocation of revenue among the federal, state and local governments in the country.

The governors made this call at the end of their monthly meeting in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital over the weekend.

The governors in a communique read by the chairman of the forum and governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, expressed concern over the federal government’s failure to clearly distinguish between federal revenue and revenue accruing to the federation.

They charged the federal ministry of finance and the accountant-general of the federation to heed to Section 162 of the Constitution, which outlines the principles of revenue sharing among the three tiers of government.

They also accused the Accountant-General of the Federation of acting in a manner suggesting a bias toward the federal government.

“The forum notes with concern, the refusal of the federal government to distinguish between the Federal Government of Nigeria’s revenue and revenue accruing to the federation which must be allocated in accordance with extant laws.

“We call on the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Accountant General of the Federation to be more transparent in obeying the law, particularly Section 162 (1) (2) (3). And equally, call on the Accountant General of the Federation to stop behaving like the Accountant General of the federal government and to exercise her role in line with the constitution.

“We call for the separation of the office of the Accountant General of the Federation and that of the Accountant General of the Federal Government of Nigeria,” the PDP governors said.

Understanding the Dollar to Naira Black Market for Forex

    What is the Black Market?

The black market refers to unofficial exchange channels where currencies are traded without government regulation. This market often provides more competitive rates due to the high demand and limited supply of foreign currencies.

Why Do People Use the Black Market?

People turn to the black market due to:

    • Favorable Rates: Often higher than official rates.
    • Accessibility: Easier to obtain foreign currency without stringent regulatory requirements.

    Factors Influencing Black Market Rates.

    Economic Policies

Government decisions on interest rates, inflation control, and forex regulations by the CBN directly affect the naira’s value. Policy adjustments aimed at stabilizing the naira impact the exchange rates.

    Supply and Demand

The availability of foreign currency versus its demand significantly influences exchange rates. A shortage of foreign currency or high demand leads to naira depreciation.

    Political Stability

Geopolitical events and internal political stability affect investor confidence. Political unrest or uncertainty can cause the naira to depreciate, while stability strengthens it.

    Global Economic Conditions

Global market conditions, such as oil prices, international economic trends, and global inflation rates, influence the naira’s value. A significant drop in oil prices, for instance, negatively impacts Nigeria’s economy.

Comparing Dollar to Naira Official and  Black Market Rates

    Why the Disparity?

Several factors contribute to the disparity:

    • Supply and Demand: Limited availability in the official market drives people to the black market.
    • Regulatory Restrictions: CBN imposes limits on forex availability, leading to higher black market rates.
    • Economic Instability: Fluctuations in oil prices and inflation prompt people to seek more favorable black market rates.

    Impact on the Economy

    High black market rates can:

    • Inflation: Increase costs for imported goods.
    • Investment: Deter foreign investment due to economic instability.
    • Trade: Benefit exporters while imposing higher costs on importers.

Niger Govt Inaugurates Taskforce Committee To Address Environmental Degradation

Niger State Government has set up a task force committee to tackle illegal mining and environmental degradation in the state.

Inaugurating the committee, the state acting governor, Yukubu Garba said the move is a vital mission that requires collective effort towards achieving sustainable development and a prosperous economy of the state.

The task force is to monitor, identify, and report the illegal mining sites in the state. The committee is also expected to monitor, identify and report child labour on mining sites as well as monitor and report security challenges in mining host communities.

Garba also explained that while the mining industry is crucial for the state’s economic growth, illegal mining activities are harming the environment, communities, and future generations.

He added that through collective efforts the future of Niger State would be defined to ensure that mineral resources are harnessed for the greater good, to create jobs, support local businesses, and enhance communities’ quality of life.

Garba also stated that with the task force committee on ground to enforce regulations and responsible mining practices, the ban on mining has been suspended conditionally.

“That’s why we suspended mining activities several months ago. Despite our efforts, compliance has been low. So, we’re taking decisive action by lifting the suspension conditionally. We’re confident that our new task force will enforce regulations and ensure responsible mining practices,” he said.

Responding on behalf of other members, the secretary to the state government and the committee chairman, Alh. Abubakar Usman expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve while assuring that members would work diligently to meet the mandate and terms of reference of the committee.

FG Lists Recognised Universities in Togo, Benin Republic Amid Crackdown on Fake Degrees ( Full List)

The Federal Government has officially identified eight universities in Togo and Benin Republic that are accredited to award degrees to Nigerian students. This announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics program.

Minister Mamman disclosed that a total of 22,500 Nigerians had obtained fake degree certificates from institutions in these two countries. These certificates, he affirmed, would be invalidated as part of the government’s effort to combat academic fraud.

The minister highlighted that this revelation stemmed from a report submitted to the Federal Executive Council by a committee tasked with investigating degree certificate racketeering involving both foreign and local universities. The findings followed an undercover investigation where a Nigerian journalist acquired a degree from a Benin Republic university in less than two months and subsequently used it to secure a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) deployment.

The federal government has recognized three universities in Togo and five in Benin Republic as legitimate institutions for Nigerian students seeking degrees.

    Approved Universities in Togo:

    1. Universite De Lome
    2. Universite De Kara
    3. Catholic University of West Africa

    Approved Universities in Benin Republic:

    1. Universite D’abomey-Calavi
    2. Universite De Parakou

Minister Mamman also emphasized that there would be no reversal on the decision to cancel the 22,700 fake certificates obtained by Nigerians from these “illegal” universities. He stated that those who obtained such degrees have tarnished the country’s reputation and assured that the government would take steps to identify and remove individuals with fake certificates from both public and private sector employment.

Mamman stressed that many of those holding these fake degrees never even left Nigeria, instead acquiring their certificates through racketeering, often with the involvement of government officials. He urged both government agencies and private sector employers to rigorously verify academic qualifications to uphold the integrity of the nation’s educational system.

Why D’Tigress Impressed At Paris 2024 Olympics – Kida

President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Musa Kida has revealed the secret behind D’Tigress impressive outing at the 2024 Olympic Games.

The African champions made it to the quarter-final of the women’s basketball event.

D’Tigress defeated heavyweights, Australia and Canada in the group stage, making history as the first African team to make it beyond the first round in his history of the Olympics.

They, however, bowed out in the quarter-final losing to holders United States of America.

Kida said stopping NBBF board members from imposing players on D’Tigress head coach, Rena Wakama played a key role in the team’s successful outing.

“The responsibility is that we have tried to isolate other board members from influencing.

“Board members can suggest, they can bring in names just like anybody else but the ultimate selection of the team is in the hands of the coach and the technical crew,” Kida said in an interview on NTA.
