Ondo’s New Governor, Aiyedatiwa Considering Obe,Sowore, others as Deputy

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in the wake of assuming office as the governor of Ondo State following the demise of Rotimi Akeredolu, the governor is  actively considering potential candidates for the crucial role of deputy governor, according to sources close to the governor.

Governor Aiyedatiwa is currently deliberating over four names, and insider reports suggest that the late governor’s appointee, Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Razaq Obe, stands as a strong contender. Obe, hailing from Ifedore Local Council in the Central Senatorial District, has long been speculated as a likely deputy governor due to his close alliance with Aiyedatiwa.

However, the dynamics of political alliances within the new administration present an intriguing twist. Akinwumi Sowore, the Commerce, Industry, and Cooperatives Commissioner, is also under consideration despite his earlier refusal, alongside Obe, to sign a vote of confidence in the late governor.

Their dissent, expressed on November 16, 2023, drew attention as Obe subsequently exposed alleged forgery of Akeredolu’s signatures within the cabinet.

The intrigue deepens with the potential consideration of Chief of Staff, Olugbenga Ale, as deputy governor. This choice is believed to be rooted in a commitment to compensate the Owo community, the hometown of the late governor. Ale, previously sidelined, is now gaining prominence in the discussions surrounding Aiyedatiwa’s decision.

As the public eagerly awaits the unveiling of the chosen deputy governor, the political landscape in Ondo State is marked by speculation and shifting dynamics.

The Guardian’s source indicates that while Razaq Obe was initially perceived as the frontrunner, Olugbenga Ale’s name is gaining momentum following Akeredolu’s passing.

The final decision on the deputy governorship remains undisclosed, leaving room for anticipation and keen observation of the unfolding political narrative in Ondo State.

Apapa-led Labour Party Organizers Beaten, Hospitalized in Edo Scam Primary Election Fallout (Video)

The organizers of the Apapa Fake Labour Party group faced the wrath of enraged youths in Edo State after being accused of defrauding unsuspecting individuals in a bid to host a fake Labour Party Edo State Gubernatorial Primary Election and Congress.

The alleged mastermind behind the scheme, self-proclaimed youth leader Eragbe Anslem, found himself on the receiving end of physical retribution as he was reportedly beaten and subsequently hospitalized by aggrieved youths in Edo State.

The incident unfolded as the organizers attempted to orchestrate a congress and Governorship Primary Election under the guise of representing the Labour Party, a move that was later revealed to be a fraudulent endeavor.

Reports suggest that the fake Labour Party group, led by Anslem, had engaged in deceptive activities, duping individuals with promises of a legitimate political process. The elaborate scam targeted unsuspecting youths who were lured into participating in what they believed to be authentic party proceedings.

The backlash against Anslem and his cohorts occurred when the truth behind their dubious intentions came to light. Outraged youths, feeling betrayed and swindled, took matters into their own hands and confronted the organizers responsible for the sham.

In a swift act of retribution, Anslem was physically assaulted by the irate youths, leading to his hospitalization. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences individuals may face when attempting to exploit the trust and aspirations of the public for personal gain.

Gunmen Attack Senator Chris Uba’s Convoy, Killing Security Operatives

A convoy believed to belong to Chris Uba, a prominent figure in Anambra politics and former senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District, was attacked by unknown gunmen last night.

The attack resulted in the tragic killing of two security operatives assigned to the politician.

The assailants targeted the convoy, riddling vehicles with bullets. Fortunately, Chris Uba managed to escape unharmed as he was traveling in a bulletproof vehicle. However, the police officers accompanying him were not as fortunate, losing their lives in the line of duty.

Val Ozigbo, a politician and a Labour Party chieftain, narrowly escaped the attack. According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred when Uba’s convoy encountered the gunmen stationed at UGA junction, leading to a fierce shootout.

“We witnessed what happened. Chris Uba’s convoy ran into the men who were stationed at UGA junction, leading to a shootout. Uba was able to escape because he was riding in a bulletproof vehicle, but the policemen were not so lucky as they were killed,” a source reported.

Val Ozigbo, traveling with his family, took evasive action when he noticed the aggressive approach of another convoy.

The attackers later engaged the convoy that belonged to Uba at UGA junction, resulting in the tragic loss of two police officers’ lives.

It is reported that the assailants had intentions to kidnap the politician. While many were injured in the attack, it remains unclear if any individuals were abducted.

The Anambra State Police Command, in response to the incident, has launched a thorough manhunt for the attackers.

The command, through its spokesperson DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, released a statement providing details of the incident and the ongoing efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The gang which disguised in military fatigue and seemed to be on a kidnap mission were jolted on seeing two armed Police officers approaching their direction.

They opened fire on the officers who had moved ahead of the convoy they were escorting to decongest traffic gridlock. Other personnel returned fire, careful not to hit many motorists who were in traffic, forcing the bandits to flee,” the statement read.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased officers and the Enugu State Police Command. He emphasized the commitment to ensuring the attackers face justice, urging all officers and men to remain vigilant.

The police force is set to employ technology to track down the criminals responsible for the attack on police personnel.

The Commissioner assured that the supreme sacrifice made by the officers would not be in vain, emphasizing the need for heightened efforts in securing the people of Anambra State.

  • Dangote Refinery Marks Milestone with Third Crude Oil Shipment, to Kick-off Production in 2024

Dangote Refinery Marks Milestone with Third Crude Oil Shipment, to Kick-off Production in 2024

Towards bolstering Nigeria’s energy refining capabilities, Dangote Refinery has received its third one-million-barrel crude oil shipment, this time from Shell International Trading and Shipping Company Limited (STASCO).

The Wednesday delivery reinforces the facility’s commitment to enhancing the nation’s energy security.

The current cargo, now totaling three million barrels at the Single-Point Mooring facility, sets the stage for the imminent arrival of a fourth crude shipment. Dangote Refinery, gearing up for operations at 350,000 barrels per day (bpd), is set to commence production of diesel and aviation fuel in mid-January 2024, with Premium Motor Spirit production to follow.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery aims to meet 100% of Nigeria’s refined product requirements, encompassing gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and aviation jet fuel. Moreover, the refinery anticipates generating a surplus of each product for potential export.

Earlier this month, the $20 billion refinery marked its initiation of crude supplies with a 950,000-barrel cargo from Nigeria’s Agbami crude, received at Dangote’s offshore crude receiving terminal in Lekki on December 7. This marked a crucial milestone for the state-of-the-art refinery as it prepared for full-scale production.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), holding a 20% stake in the refinery, has entered an agreement to supply 6 million barrels of crude oil as feedstock to jumpstart Dangote refinery operations. Aliko Dangote, the owner, affirmed that the refinery is on track to achieve a refining capacity of 650,000 barrels per day by the end of 2024.

Emphasizing the refinery’s commitment to Nigeria, Dangote stated that the initial focus is on supplying petrol to the country before exploring export opportunities, including those within the West African region.

As the refinery inches closer to full-scale production, it stands as a beacon for Nigeria’s energy independence and a key player in the global refining landscape.

“I stand solidly with you in the advancement of the progressive ideological stance of our party, and we will pursue it with vigor,” Tinubu affirmed.

Expressing frustration over the lack of intervention, Kavwam accused the security agencies of negligence, stating that despite receiving distress calls, no substantial action was taken.

Global Banking Giants Announce Unprecedented Job Cuts in 2023″

In an unexpected turn of events, major global banks, including UBS, Wells Fargo, and others, have collectively implemented substantial job cuts, surpassing 60,000 in 2023. This marks one of the most significant workforce reductions since the 2008 global financial crisis.

The rationale behind this sweeping transformation can be attributed to several factors. Notably, the integration of Credit Suisse into UBS has played a pivotal role in this industry-wide shake-up. Additionally, the ripple effects of declining fees have had a profound impact on Wall Street’s revenue streams, prompting a strategic reassessment of human resources within these financial institutions.

As the financial sector grapples with heightened instability and uncertainty, the aftermath of these extensive job cuts is poised to send shockwaves across industries and global economies. The implications of this major restructuring are likely to reverberate far beyond the confines of the banking sector, influencing the broader economic landscape.

What are the factors that influence the black market dollar rate?

Factors Influencing the Black Market Dollar Rate:

    Supply and Demand Dynamics:

      • The fundamental economic principle of supply and demand plays a significant role. If demand for the dollar is high relative to its supply, the exchange rate tends to rise, and vice versa.

    Economic Indicators:

      • Economic indicators such as inflation rates, GDP growth, and employment figures can influence the black market dollar rate. A robust economy generally attracts foreign investors, increasing demand for the local currency.

    Political Stability and Governance:

      • Political stability fosters confidence among investors, positively impacting the exchange rate. Political uncertainty or instability can lead to a lack of confidence and a depreciation of the local currency.

    Government Policies:

      • Monetary and fiscal policies implemented by the government can affect the exchange rate. Policies that promote economic stability and growth tend to have a positive impact, while inconsistent or unfavorable policies can lead to currency depreciation.

    Foreign Exchange Reserves:

      • The level of a country’s foreign exchange reserves can influence its ability to stabilize its currency. Higher reserves provide a cushion against market pressures, while lower reserves may lead to a weaker currency.

    Trade Balances:

      • A country with a trade surplus (exports exceeding imports) is likely to have a stronger currency. Conversely, a trade deficit may lead to a weaker currency.

    Global Economic Conditions:

      • The overall health of the global economy can impact the black market dollar rate. Economic crises or uncertainties in major economies can lead to shifts in currency values.

    Interest Rates:

      • Interest rates set by the central bank influence the attractiveness of a currency. Higher interest rates may attract foreign investors seeking better returns, increasing demand for the local currency.

    Speculation:

      • Speculative activities in the foreign exchange market can lead to short-term fluctuations in the black market dollar rate. Traders’ perceptions of future economic conditions can drive speculative buying or selling.

    Legal and Regulatory Environment:

      • The regulatory environment, including restrictions on currency trading and foreign exchange policies, can impact the black market dollar rate.

    Inflation Rates:

      • High inflation rates erode the purchasing power of a currency, making it less attractive to investors. Countries with lower inflation rates may experience a more favorable exchange rate.

    Market Sentiment:

      • Perceptions and sentiments in the market, influenced by news, geopolitical events, or other external factors, can have a short-term impact on the black market dollar rate.

Court Extends Order as INEC and Rivers Assembly Face Challenge Over Defected Lawmakers’ Seats.

In a legal battle with far-reaching political implications, a Federal High Court in Abuja has extended its order restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Rivers State House of Assembly from declaring the seats of 27 lawmakers, who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), vacant and conducting fresh elections.

The order, initially granted on December 15, continues to be in force, emphasizing the complexity of the case.

Justice Donatus Okorowo extended the order on Thursday, December 28, following an unopposed application by Steve Adehi (SAN), the lawyer representing the defecting lawmakers. This move was supported by Ken Njemanze (SAN), who represented the Rivers House of Assembly.

The court rejected objections raised by Adeyemi Ajibade (SAN), the lawyer to the PDP, affirming the discretionary power of the court to grant such extensions in the interest of justice under Order 26, Rule 10 of the Federal High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules.

Justice Okorowo stated, “Application for the extension of the lifespan of the ex-parte order pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice is hereby granted,” adjourning the case until January 24 for the hearing of pending applications.

The initial orders were granted in response to an ex-parte motion filed by the 27 lawmakers on December 15, challenging the threat by five members of the Rivers Assembly to declare their seats vacant and invite INEC to conduct fresh elections. The defendants in the suit include INEC, the PDP, Rivers State House of Assembly, Clerk of the House, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), and the Department of State Services (DSS).

During the proceedings, Adehi informed the court of a motion on notice, seeking an adjournment to respond to filings from the PDP and other defendants. Njemanze, replacing Lukman Fagbemi (SAN) for the House of Assembly, requested an adjournment to allow him to file processes and respond to the developments in the case.

The PDP’s legal adviser, Adeyemi Ajibade, raised objections challenging the competence of the suit and the court’s jurisdiction. He expressed agreement with the application for adjournment, allowing him to sort out processes and respond to the plaintiffs’ filings.

The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1681/2023, remains a focal point of legal and political scrutiny, with the adjournment signaling a potential turning point in the unfolding drama surrounding the defected lawmakers and the power dynamics within the Rivers State Assembly.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) maintained on Thursday that the 26 lawmakers from the Rivers House of Assembly, who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), no longer held membership in the state legislature.

This firm stance was articulated by PDP’s National Legal Adviser, Adeyemi Ajibade, SAN, in a press briefing held shortly after Justice Donatus Okorowo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, adjourned the contentious lawsuit filed by the embattled lawmakers until January 24, 2024.

Despite reported interventions by prominent figures such as President Bola Tinubu in the ongoing dispute between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Ajibade emphasized that the party’s position rested on adherence to constitutional provisions regarding defection.

“As a party, we stand unwaveringly on the side of the country’s constitution,” asserted Ajibade. “It transcends issues of agreement, as, by the constitution, we are all bound by the oath to uphold its principles.

Both the governor and the president have sworn to uphold the constitution, and I am not against the president calling for the resolution of the matter. He is the chief security officer of this country, with every right to intervene in the issue.”

Ajibade underscored the clarity provided by the country’s constitution, particularly referencing Section 109 (1g), which explicitly addresses issues related to defection. He noted that the affected lawmakers had not denied their decision to defect, reinforcing the party’s conviction in considering their seats vacant.
