Breaking News: High Court Rejects DSS Bid to Prolong Emefiele’s Detention

Federal High Court Rejects DSS Application to Extend Emefiele’s Detention.

A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has dismissed a discreet application filed by the Department of State Services (DSS) seeking an extension of the detention of Godwin Emefiele, the embattled Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

According to reliable sources, the DSS’s legal team submitted the application on Wednesday, claiming to have obtained new evidence. However, Justice Hamza Muazu, presiding over the case, cited an abuse of court process and lack of jurisdiction as grounds for dismissing the request.

The DSS had taken Emefiele back into custody on the court premises in Lagos, following an earlier order by the court to remand him in a Correctional Centre until his bail conditions were fulfilled.

Victor Ejelonu, the counsel representing the DSS, decided to withdraw the application after the judge raised concerns about the court’s jurisdiction. This came as it was pointed out that the exclusive authority to grant detention orders lies with the Magistrate Court under sections 293 and 296 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.

Protesters Reject Mass Burial For #EndSARS Victims

The coalition comprising #EndSARS protesters and their supporters has strongly criticized Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The coalition accused Governor Sanwo-Olu of providing false information to the public regarding the mass burial of EndSARS protesters, and they firmly believe that the state government was not sincere about addressing the killings that occurred at the Lekki Toll Gate in October 2020.

According to a statement issued by the Coalition of #EndSARS Frontliners, they have called for an immediate suspension of the planned mass burial of 103 bodies. These individuals tragically lost their lives during the state-sponsored violence and killings at the Lekki Toll Gate.

The coalition expressed deep concern over the leaked memo that revealed the approval of a contract for the mass burial and condemned the Lagos State Government’s insensitive and insincere response to the situation.

The coalition further criticized Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his administration for attempting to mislead the global community, aiming to manipulate public perception and avoid accountability and justice.

They pointed out that Governor Sanwo-Olu contradicted himself multiple times between October 21 and 23, 2020, with varying statements about the deaths at the Lekki Toll Gate – initially denying any deaths, then acknowledging one death from blunt trauma, and later confirming two deaths among the protesters in Lekki.

#EndSARS protesters and investigative journalists firmly believe that multiple fatalities occurred at Lekki Toll Gate.

The Judicial Panel, established by Mr. Sanwo-Olu, has corroborated this claim in its report, specifically on pages 297 and 298, where nine individuals were identified as killed, and an additional four remain missing but are presumed dead.

In light of these findings, any assertion that denies deaths at Lekki Toll Gate or only confirms two casualties is deemed as a deceitful and audacious falsehood.

The panel’s report has held the Lagos State Government, Nigerian military, and the police accountable for the tragedy that unfolded at the Lekki Toll Gate, attributing the massacre to their actions.

According to the report, the military and the police fired at peaceful protesters on October 20, 2020, at the Toll Gate, and at the behest of Governor Sanwo-Olu, the military reportedly removed the deceased protesters’ bodies in their vehicles in an attempt to conceal the crime scene.

The group insists that the government must abandon misleading tactics and confront the harsh reality that their actions led to the loss of innocent Nigerian lives.

They demand the Lagos State government to immediately halt the planned mass burial of 103 bodies at TOS Funeral Services and instead, implement the recommendations outlined in the Judicial Panel of Inquiry’s White Paper.

Furthermore, the group calls for a one-month notice period to allow citizens to identify their loved ones among the 103 bodies.

To ensure accurate identification, they urge the state government to conduct DNA mapping through a reputable private organization and also provide compensation and therapy to the families who have endured immense trauma over the past three years.

Despite the government’s attempts to discredit their actions, the #EndSARS protesters worldwide assert that they will not be silenced or deterred. They remain steadfast in their peaceful protest until justice prevails.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons are eagerly pursuing a quarter-final spot in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup as they gear up for their second group match against co-hosts Australia in Brisbane.

In their previous outing, Nigeria managed to secure a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Olympics champions Canada, with goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie emerging as the game’s hero by saving a decisive penalty and its subsequent rebound from Christine Sinclair. On the other hand, Australia secured a narrow 1-0 victory against the Republic of Ireland in their opening match.

Among the African representatives, the Super Falcons stood out as the sole team to earn a point in the initial round, as Zambia, South Africa, and Morocco faced defeats.

Ahead of their encounter with Australia, Coach Randy Waldrum made three changes to the Nigerian starting lineup from the match against Canada. Uchenna Kanu, Halimat Ayinde, and Rasheedat Ajibade returned from suspension, taking the places of Francessa Ordega, Deborah Abiodun (suspended), and Asisat Oshoala. Oshoala, the renowned striker from Barcelona, who recently made history with the club by winning the first treble, will begin the game on the bench due to an injury she picked up in the previous match against Canada.

Nigeria’s lineup for the upcoming game against Australia includes: NNadozie, Alozie, Plumptre, Ohale, Demehin, Payne, Ayinde, Uchiebe, Ajibade, Kanu, and Onumonu.

On the Australian side, coach Tony Gustavssonn expressed uncertainty regarding the availability of star striker Sam Kerr, who suffered a calf injury. Kerr’s condition will be re-assessed after the Nigeria game, and the team hopes she will recover in time for their final Group B match against Canada on July 31 in Melbourne. Additionally, the Australian team faces fresh injury concerns with Kerr’s replacement, Mary Fowler, ruled out for the match against Nigeria.

Australia’s starting lineup for the clash against Nigeria comprises: Arnold, Vine, Catley (c), Foord, Van Egmond, Kennedy, Hunt, Raso, Gorry, Carpenter, and Cooney-Cross.

As they make their seventh appearance at the World Cup, Nigeria aims to advance to the second round. The Super Falcons find themselves in a challenging Group B, alongside Australia, Canada, and the Republic of Ireland.

Central Bank of Nigeria Orders Banks to Unfreeze Crypto and Fintech Company Accounts.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued a new directive to banks, ordering them to unfreeze the accounts of various entities, including cryptocurrency, foreign exchange investment, and Bureau De Change companies. According to the circular, dated July 25, 2023, the CBN has specifically directed banks to lift the post-no-debit restrictions on accounts belonging to Yellow Card Financial, a prominent crypto exchange, and 439 other individuals and companies.

The list of entities with unfrozen accounts also includes Rise Vest Technologies Limited, Chaka Technologies Limited, Bamboo Systems Technology Limited, and Trove Technologies Limited.

This decision comes after a previous action taken in August 2021 under the leadership of suspended CBN governor Godwin Emefiele. At that time, the CBN obtained a court order to freeze the accounts of these fintech firms for a period of 180 days to investigate alleged serious foreign exchange infractions.

The investigation centered around potential violations of the Foreign Exchange (Monitoring and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act and the Central Bank of Nigeria foreign exchange manual, specifically related to foreign exchange transactions and lack of documentation.

Interestingly, the recent circular from the CBN does not offer specific reasons for the decision to lift the Post-No-Debit restrictions on these accounts. Banks have been directed to inform the account holders affected by this development accordingly.

CBN orders banks to unfreeze accounts of crypto, fintech companies.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued a directive to banks to unfreeze the accounts of certain entities, including foreign exchange investment, cryptocurrency, and Bureau De Change companies. The circular, dated July 25, 2023, instructs banks to lift the post-no-debit restriction that was previously placed on the accounts of several entities, which includes popular crypto exchange Yellow Card Financial and 439 other individuals and companies.

Dollar to naira black market today July 27, 2023 | Aboki fx rate

Among the listed companies are Rise Vest Technologies Limited, Chaka Technologies Limited, Bamboo Systems Technology Limited, and Trove Technologies Limited.

The freezing of these accounts was initiated in August 2021 under the suspended CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele. At that time, the CBN obtained a Federal High Court order to freeze the accounts of the fintech firms for 180 days to investigate alleged serious foreign exchange infractions by the companies.

The investigation centered around foreign exchange transactions and non-documentation by the defendants/respondents, which were deemed to be in violation of existing laws and regulations, particularly the Foreign Exchange (Monitoring and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act and the Central Bank of Nigeria foreign exchange manual.

However, the recent circular from the CBN did not provide any specific reasons for the decision to lift the Post-No-Debit restriction on these accounts. The banks have been instructed to inform the concerned customers about the vacation of the restriction accordingly.

Here are some of the factors that can affect the CBN exchange rate between the Nigerian naira and the US dollar:

    • Demand and supply: If there is more demand for the US dollar than there is supply, the exchange rate will go up. Conversely, if there is more supply of the US dollar than there is demand, the exchange rate will go down.
    • Economic factors: The state of the Nigerian economy and the US economy can also affect the exchange rate. For example, if the Nigerian economy is doing well, the naira will be more valuable. Conversely, if the Nigerian economy is doing poorly, the naira will be less valuable.
    • Political factors: Political instability in Nigeria or the US can also affect the exchange rate. For example, if there is a coup in Nigeria, the naira will likely lose value.

Bayelsa Slot: Jonathan Finally Speaks Out on Attempt to Influence Tinubu’s Ministerial Nominees

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has clarified his position regarding his recent visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He firmly stated that he has not taken any action nor does he have any intention to influence the nomination of a minister from Bayelsa state in Tinubu’s government.

The clarification comes in response to concerns raised by a group known as the All Progressives Congress (APC) Elders Council in Bayelsa state, who alleged that Jonathan was attempting to exert influence over the nomination of a ministerial slot from Bayelsa.

    Goodluck Jonathan Responds to Allegations

Jonathan dismissed these allegations, stating that some politicians in the state may have misunderstood the purpose of his recent visits to the Presidential Villa. According to a statement from his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Ikechukwu Eze, the visits were aimed at updating President Bola Tinubu, who had been elected as the Chairman of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, on recent developments in the sub-region. Jonathan himself holds the position of Chairman of the ECOWAS Council of the Wise.

In light of the misinformation being spread, Jonathan urged Nigerians to disregard what he termed ‘mischief makers’ and the proliferation of fake news, as they pose a threat to the nation’s peace and growth.

    APC Elders Express Opposition

On the other hand, the Bayelsa APC Elders Council expressed their opposition to what they perceived as relentless attempts by former President Goodluck Jonathan to nominate ministers from the state for President Bola Tinubu. The group alleged that Jonathan’s moves to nominate a minister for the state were unwarranted, particularly given his open and active support for Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the previous presidential election.

Controversies as Delta Tribunal Dismisses Senator Ovie Omo-Agege’s Applications for New Witnesses

Delta Tribunal Dismisses Senator Ovie Omo-Agege’s two Applications for New Witnesses.

PDP Supporters Jubilating, claim Delta governorship tribunal dismisses Omo-Agege, APC’s case against Oborevwori.

The Delta State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, held in Asaba, made a decision on Wednesday to dismiss the applications submitted by Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC). The applications were aimed at introducing a statistician expert witness to testify before the tribunal and seeking an extension of time for INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission) subpoenaed witnesses to file their statements on oath and testify before the tribunal.

The three-man panel, headed by Justice C.H. Ahuchaogu, also considered the opposition from the counsels representing Governor Sheriff Oborevwori (the second respondent) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) (the third respondent). These opposing parties argued that granting the applications would give the petitioners an unfair advantage and go beyond the normal procedures, as the pleadings had already been concluded.

The tribunal agreed with the respondents’ arguments and cited previous cases to support their decision to dismiss the first application. They noted that it was brought 101 days after the order for inspection of election materials was granted, and the delay couldn’t be blamed on INEC.

The tribunal emphasized that the petitioners failed to file their expert witness statement on oath in a timely manner, and thus, granting the application for an expert statistician witness would be unjust to the respondents.

Regarding the second application seeking an extension of time for INEC to file a statement on oath based on the subpoena, the panel of justices held that the petitioners provided no evidence to support their request. They stated that the tribunal cannot compel an adversary like INEC to file witness depositions for the petitioners and that the issuance of a subpoena was the appropriate action taken by the tribunal.

APC Leadership Turmoil: Third Resignation Hits NWC as National Vice Chairman Steps Down

The tribunal found no merit in either of the applications and subsequently dismissed them in their entirety. This ruling prevents the introduction of a new expert witness and upholds the previous procedures followed during the election petition.

Delta governorship tribunal dismisses Omo-Agege, APC’s case against Oborevwori

“In another development, supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are in a state of wild jubilation as they claim that the governorship election tribunal in Delta State today dismissed the case of former Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege, against Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

Some PDP supporters were seen at the premises of the governorship election petition tribunal, celebrating their victory.

    What we know:

As of the time of this report, the tribunal has not delivered its judgment. However, the tribunal did dismiss two applications filed by Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, the governorship candidate of the Delta APC, who sought to call more witnesses.”

Once the names of the nominees are submitted to the Senate, the appointees will undergo clearance before being inaugurated into President Tinubu’s cabinet.

However, history reminds us that not all politicians who have been nominated in the past ended up becoming ministers of the federal republic of Nigeria. Some notable cases include:

    1. Ambassador Bayo Yusuf:

Nominated by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the Ondo-born politician faced challenges during the Senate screening when he failed to provide the full meaning of Obasanjo’s NEEDS (National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy), the title of the then federal government’s economic policy document.

    3. Bode Agusto:

Although nominated by former President Obasanjo, Agusto’s appointment was met with resistance from a majority of the Senators, particularly the Lagos representatives. The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also rejected his nomination, stating that it did not align with the interests of the state chapter.

Two shot dead as sit-at-home protest rocks Enugu

Two traders were slain by security agents while protesting the closure of their businesses in Ogbete Main Market by the Enugu State government for failing to come to market on Monday.

Several other traders were also hurt during the demonstration, which has resulted in the market’s indefinite closure by Governor Peter Mbah’s government.

According to our correspondent, the governor has declared war on businesses that comply with the sit-in order issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra in the South East area to demand the release of their leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Kanu has been detained by the Department of State Services since June 2021.

Mbah closed multiple shops, malls, and banks on Monday, accusing them of participating in the “illegal sit-at-home” protest.

Justifying the closure of private enterprises, Mbah stated in a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the state government’s Secretary, Prof Chidiebere Onyia, that the sealed shops would remain closed for one week.

He also stated that owners of businesses that have been sealed must provide their current tax clearance certificates as well as all other relevant revenue documents by the end of one week in order for the state government to review and consider their formal letters for re-opening, or they will be auctioned or permanently forfeited to the state government.

However, our correspondent learned on Wednesday that the trouble began when traders whose shops were sealed informed market leadership that their stores must be unsealed for business or those that are unsealed will not open.

A market dealer identified as Gerald Ede informed our correspondent that the traders’ request that other businesses not open led to a protest.

“Shortly after receiving orders from the governor, a considerable number of soldiers and policemen were dispatched to the market.

Upon their arrival, they began firing their weapons in a haphazard manner, forcing people to flee and locking up shops. In the midst of the chaotic situation, two traders lost their lives as they were shot by the soldiers while inside the market.
