Npower News: NASIMS May Soon Recruit 2023 Batch Under Tinubu Administration

In the latest Npower news today, there is an intriguing possibility that the N-power program might soon recruit the 2023 Batch under the administration of President Tinubu.

As the Npower Batch C2 participants near the completion of their 1-year empowerment program, changes are already underway with the Nasims self-service portal, indicating a potential fresh enrollment for the new batch in 2023.

Npower news  on Batch A, B and C.

The Npower initiative, which was introduced by the former administration of President Buhari in 2016, has successfully enrolled three batches of volunteers – batches A, B, and the ongoing batch C. The primary aim of the program is to equip Nigerian youths with essential employability and entrepreneurship skills, enabling them to secure gainful employment or become successful entrepreneurs.

Over the years, the Npower program has impacted the lives of more than a million youths in both the graduate and non-graduate categories. Graduates receive a monthly stipend of N30,000, while non-graduates receive N10,000, providing much-needed financial support during their participation in the program.

While the possibility of the 2023 batch recruitment exists, there has been no official statement from the new administration regarding the future of the Npower program. Furthermore, beneficiaries of Batch C are still awaiting their 8 monthly backlog payments, which may affect the timing of any potential new recruitment drive.

Senator Ajibola Basiru, a holder of a doctorate degree in Law, has served as a Commissioner for Special Duties and Attorney-General/Commissioner for Justice in Osun State. He was elected as a Senator from Osun Central District in 2019 and served as the Senate spokesman.

The departure of Senator Abdullahi Adamu and Senator Iyiola Omisore from their respective positions as chairman and secretary was prompted by complaints about their leadership lacking accountability and inclusivity.

They were also accused of neglecting important party organs by not holding regular NWC meetings and not adhering to the party constitution regarding NEC.

Salihu Lukman, the APC National Vice Chairman (Northwest), commented on the resignations, stating that disloyal and subversive leadership cannot be tolerated in the party.

He supported President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s endorsement of Ganduje as the next national chairman, considering Ganduje’s loyalty and capability. However, Lukman also stressed the importance of adhering to the earlier agreed-upon zoning formula and ceding the office of the National Chairman to the Northcentral.

The APC’s NEC is expected to ratify Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje as the national chairman and Senator Ajibola Basiru as the national secretary during their upcoming meeting. The party aims to ensure a smooth transition and maintain continuity in the party leadership, while also considering the importance of adhering to the zoning arrangement for the composition of the leadership positions.

  • Russia Reports Ukrainian Drone Attacks on Moscow and Crimea Amidst Ongoing Southern Offensive

Russia Reports Ukrainian Drone Attacks on Moscow and Crimea Amidst Ongoing Southern Offensive

Russian authorities have accused Ukraine of launching a drone attack on Moscow early Monday, resulting in one of the drones falling near the Defense Ministry’s main headquarters and another striking Crimea. The Russian military retaliated by launching new strikes on port infrastructure in southern Ukraine.

According to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, there were no casualties when the attacking drones hit two nonresidential buildings. The Defense Ministry claimed they jammed the drones, causing them to crash.

Reports from Russian media indicated that one of the drones crashed on the Komsomolsky highway near Moscow’s center, causing damage to shop windows and the roof of a nearby house. The target of the drone was not immediately clear, as it was uncertain whether it was aiming for the Defense Ministry’s headquarters or another location in central Moscow.

Another drone hit an office building in southern Moscow, causing significant damage to several upper floors, more substantial than previous drone strikes in the Russian capital.

Ukrainian authorities did not immediately claim responsibility for the attack, but this was the second drone strike on the Russian capital this month. In the previous attack on July 4, the Russian military reported downing four of the five attacking drones, while the fifth was jammed and forced down.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that there has been an increase in attempts to attack Russian regions with drones, prompting intensified measures to counter such attacks. However, no specific details were provided about any enhancements to Russia’s air defense systems.

In addition to the Moscow attack, Ukrainian drones also targeted an ammunition depot in northern Crimea, leading to the suspension of traffic on a major highway and railway in the region. Russian forces reported shooting down or jamming 11 attacking drones, while the Defense Ministry later claimed that 11 of the 17 drones were jammed and crashed into the Black Sea, with three others shot down.

Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s digital transformation minister, asserted that the recent drone attacks indicate that Russia’s electronic warfare and air defense capabilities are becoming less effective in protecting against such incursions.

Furthermore, Russian forces struck port infrastructure on the Danube River in southern Ukraine with exploding drones, injuring seven people and causing significant damage to grain hangars and cargo storage. The Ukrainian military reported downing three of the attacking drones.

These attacks are part of an ongoing series of strikes in southern Ukraine, which Russia claims are in retaliation for a Ukrainian strike on the Kerch Bridge. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the bridge a legitimate target, citing its use by Russia to ferry military supplies.

Since Moscow canceled a grain deal with Kyiv, Russia has escalated its attacks on Odesa, a critical hub for exporting grain. An attack on Odesa resulted in one fatality and 22 injuries, with 25 landmarks damaged, including the Transfiguration Cathedral. UNESCO condemned the attack on the cathedral and other heritage sites and announced plans to assess the damage.

The Russian military denied targeting the Transfiguration Cathedral, blaming a Ukrainian air defense missile for the incident. A total of 10 people were wounded in Russian attacks on Ukraine in the past 24 hours, with incidents reported in the Odesa, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv regions.

Dr. Tajudeen Sanusi, the Registrar of MDCN, expressed concern about the pass rate, which stands at 27.4 percent, deeming it poor.

However, he emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards to protect the health of Nigerians.

Dr. Sanusi also pointed out that such assessments are a standard global practice, ensuring that doctors who trained in one jurisdiction can demonstrate their qualifications in another jurisdiction.

In conclusion, the assessment examination conducted by the MDCN is compulsory for all foreign-trained doctors intending to practice in Nigeria.

Its purpose is to assess the candidates’ capabilities and guarantee that they can deliver safe and effective medical care in the country.

Nigeria’s External Reserves Decline to Two-Year Low at $33.9 Billion

As of July 19th, 2023, Nigeria’s external reserves have fallen to $33.9 billion, marking its lowest level in two years. Data obtained from the central bank’s website indicates a consistent downward trend in the country’s external reserve position, with the last time it reached this level recorded in July/August 2021.

Despite the introduction of the revised I&E Window on July 14th, 2023, demand pressure for forex has surged, while forex earnings have seen a decline, contributing to the reduction in external reserves. The situation has been compounded by a lack of forex supply and a growing sense of foreign investment apathy.

Notably, when Tinubu assumed the presidency, the external reserves stood at $35 billion. However, just before the recent changes to the forex policy on July 13th, the reserves had dropped to $34.6 billion.

The primary reason behind the drop in Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings can be attributed to the decrease in crude oil revenues. The country has been grappling with the impact of crude oil theft, which has negatively affected its overall oil revenues.

The decline in external reserves raises concerns about the country’s financial stability and ability to cope with economic challenges. Authorities may need to adopt measures to boost forex earnings and attract foreign investments to mitigate the ongoing downward trend in external reserves and foster economic growth in the nation.

“CBN under probe for withholding excess crude investment.

The House of Representatives has initiated an ad-hoc committee to conduct an investigation into the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) regarding its utilization of the excess crude account for investments.

Allegations have surfaced that the CBN deposited $1,829,025.45 as interest on investments in the excess crude account but failed to provide specific details about the investment principal.

Esosa Iyawe, a representative of the Labour Party (LP) from Edo, disclosed that the auditor-general of the Federation had requested comprehensive information on the investments and the utilization of funds from the Petroleum Profit Tax (PPT)/Royalty and Foreign Excess Crude Account. However, the CBN consistently declined to furnish the requested information, as documented in the auditor general’s annual report in 2015.

Based on this refusal, Iyawe, during the plenary, moved the motion for the CBN to be probed, expressing concerns that the lack of transparency is hindering the Federal Government’s efforts to prevent revenue leakage, increase turnover, and combat corruption.

The House shares Iyawe’s concerns about the CBN’s persistent refusal to disclose details regarding the management of interests accruing from the Petroleum Profit Tax (PPT)/Royalty and Foreign Excess Crude Account. Additionally, reports have emerged about unauthorized and indiscriminate withdrawals from the Excess Crude Account, covering expenditures unrelated to the fund’s intended purpose, such as current year expenses, fuel subsidies, debt financing, and power projects.

The House is also troubled by the 2016 audit report’s revelation of the disappearance of over $9.5 million in interest accrued from the Petroleum Profit Tax (PPT) Investment.

Furthermore, the House expresses deep concerns over the lack of transparency in managing interests on Federal Government investments, raising questions about the adherence to accountability principles and the potential misuse of critical government funds.

In response to these alarming findings, the House has directed the CBN to promptly provide the auditor-general for the federation’s office with comprehensive details of all interests and principal sums related to investments in the excess crude oil/petroleum profits tax/royalty account. Compliance with the required format is essential to facilitate a thorough and transparent investigation.

Here are some of the factors that can affect the CBN exchange rate between the Nigerian naira and the US dollar:

    • Demand and supply: If there is more demand for the US dollar than there is supply, the exchange rate will go up. Conversely, if there is more supply of the US dollar than there is demand, the exchange rate will go down.
    • Economic factors: The state of the Nigerian economy and the US economy can also affect the exchange rate. For example, if the Nigerian economy is doing well, the naira will be more valuable. Conversely, if the Nigerian economy is doing poorly, the naira will be less valuable.
    • Political factors: Political instability in Nigeria or the US can also affect the exchange rate. For example, if there is a coup in Nigeria, the naira will likely lose value.

Lagos Govt Confirms Mass Burial for 103 EndSARS Protest Victims, Clarifies Misinformation

Lagos State Government Prepares Bodies of 103 ENDSARS Protest Victims for Mass Burial

In an official statement on Sunday, the Lagos State Government confirmed that it is set to conduct a mass burial for the bodies of 103 victims of the 2020 ENDSARS protest.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Olusegun Ogboye, clarified that none of the bodies being buried were retrieved from the Lekki tollgate incident.

    103 EndSARS Protest Victims

Ogboye emphasized that the bodies were collected by the Lagos State Environmental Health Unit in the aftermath of the #EndSARS violence and community clashes that occurred in various areas, including Fagba, Ketu, Ikorodu, Orile, Ajegunle, Abule-Egba, Ikeja, Ojota, Ekoro, Ogba, Isolo, and Ajah.

The statement was issued in response to media reports referring to a letter requesting funds for the mass burial of the #EndSARS victims. The letter, dated July 19 and from the public procurement agency, revealed that the state government had engaged the services of Messrs Tos Funeral Ltd, a private firm, at a cost of N61,285,000 for the burial.

Ogboye clarified that the content of the letter had been misinterpreted and sensationalized to create misinformation and public disaffection against the Lagos State Government. He explained that the mass burial was necessary because no one had come forward to claim the bodies despite public appeals by the Chief Coroner through advertisements. The appeals were made to those who had lost loved ones or had family members declared missing between October 19 and 27, 2020.

According to Ogboye, the bodies had remained unclaimed for almost three years, leading to morgue congestion. The decision to proceed with the mass burial followed careful medical and legal procedures to account for the possibility of relatives turning up to claim the bodies years after the incidents occurred.

The periodic and regular decongestion of public morgues is an approved measure by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to create space in mortuaries that hold a large number of unclaimed bodies.

The #EndSARS protest was a large-scale demonstration by Nigerian youths against police brutality and social injustice, which spanned approximately three weeks in October 2020.

While the protests took place in various locations, the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos State served as a focal point for protesters, who engaged in peaceful demonstrations, communal activities, and expressions of national unity. However, on Tuesday, October 20, 2020, Nigerian forces dispersed the protesters at the location by firing gunshots, leading to tragic consequences.
