G-5 Governors: Ugwuanyi, Ortom, Makinde lose elections after dumping Atiku

G-5 Governors lose elections (Senatorial bid)

Three of the five aggrieved Governors elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who vowed to retire the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar politically may have experienced their own share of heartbreak.

Recall that governors Samuel Ortom of Benue State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, and their leader, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, decided to support a presidential candidate from another party, abandoning Atiku’s campaign.

The PDP leadership crisis began when Wilke was unable to secure the party’s nomination to run for president in May 2022.

Prior to the PDP primary election that produced the former vice president as the party’s candidate, Southern governors unanimously agreed that President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor must come from the South.

However, the PDP primary election did not favor Southerners, particularly Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike, as Atiku secured 371 votes to defeat him in the May 2022 primary election.

Wike and the other four governors demanded the resignation of the party’s national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, because they were angered by the outcome of the primary election.

It would be unfair to the South, according to the governors, for the North to produce both the presidential candidate and the party chairman.

The refusal of Ayu to resign prompted the governors to support either Peter Obi of the Labour Party or Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress in the upcoming presidential election.

The G-5 held series of meetings with Tinubu in London to discuss how to reach an agreement prior to Saturday’s presidential election, but some of the governors were unable to reach a consensus.

Although there was no official announcement, Wike, Makinde, and Ugwuanyi’s decision to support the APC candidate was crystal clear.

In contrast, Governor Ortom publicly endorsed the former governor of Anambra, stating that he was the best of the three major candidates.

Prior to the elections on Saturday, there were indications that Ikpeazu had changed his mind and decided to support Atiku, the PDP candidate.

Although Wike was not running for office, Ortom, Ugwuanyi, and Ikpeazu were vying for senatorial positions in their respective districts.

In Oyo State’s three senatorial districts, Makinde’s loyalists ran for Senate seats. Makinde, who is seeking a second term, is running for re-election.

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, have not been favoring the G-5 when announcing election results as Bnue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, Ugwuanyi and Ikpeazu lost their senatorial bid.

    “THE AGE OF REBORN HOPE”
By Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President-Elect of the Federal Republic of Nigeria

    March 1, 2023

    My fellow Nigerians,

I am profoundly honoured to have been elected the sixteenth president of our cherished republic. This is a defining moment in any man’s life and a testament to our democratic existence. From the bottom of my heart, I say thank you.

Whether you are Batified, Atikulated, Obidient, Kwankwasiyya, or have any other political affiliation, you voted for a better, more hopeful nation, and I appreciate your participation in our democracy.

You chose to place your faith in the democratic vision of a Nigeria based on shared prosperity and nourished by the values of unity, justice, peace, and tolerance. Renewed hope has dawned in Nigeria.

We applaud INEC for conducting a fair and free election. The infractions that did occur were few in number and inconsequential to the final result. With each election cycle, we continue to refine this vital aspect of our democratic life.

Nigeria is currently the colossus of Africa. It shines even brighter as the largest democracy on the continent. I appreciate everyone who helped my campaign. From President Buhari, who led my campaign with skill as its chairman, to my Vice Presidential Candidate, Senator Kashim Shettima, everyone has been supportive of my campaign.

To the progressive governors of our party and country, the party leadership, and our loyal party members. I am indebted to you with gratitude. To the entire campaign staff, I extend my sincere appreciation.

I thank my wife and family for their unwavering and inspiring support. This victory would not be possible without you.

I am grateful to the Most High God. By His grace, I was born a Nigerian, and by His sublime will, I have won this election. May He grant me the prudence and fortitude to lead the nation to the greatness that He alone has destined for it.

Lastly, I appreciate the Nigerian people’s unwavering faith in our democracy. I will be a leader who is fair to all Nigerians. I will be in tune with your aspirations, invigorate your energies, and utilize your skills to create a nation of which we can be proud.

I extend the hand of friendship to my fellow candidates, former vice president Atiku, former governor Kwankwaso, former governor Obi, and all others. This campaign was competitive and spirited.

You have my highest regard. Political reconciliation and inclusive governance must now replace political competition. You may have been my opponent during the election, but you were never my enemy. In my heart, I consider you to be my brothers.

Nevertheless, I am aware that some candidates will struggle to accept the election results. You have the right to pursue legal action. It is neither appropriate nor justifiable for anyone to resort to violence. Any challenge to the election results must be brought before a court of law, not in the streets.

I also request that my supporters let peace prevail and tensions subside. We conducted a principled, peaceful, and forward-thinking campaign.

Yes, there are divisions that should not exist among us. Many individuals are uncertain, angry, and hurt; I extend my hand to each of you. At this momentous juncture, let the better aspects of our humanity come to the forefront. Let us begin to heal our nation and restore its tranquility.

Now, I hear you loud and clear, young people of this nation. I comprehend your anguish, as well as your yearnings for effective government, a robust economy, and a secure nation that safeguards you and your future.

I am aware that for many of you, Nigeria has become a place of persistent obstacles that hinder your ability to envision a prosperous future.

Renovating our cherished national residence requires the concerted efforts of all of us, particularly the youth. Together, we will move the nation forward as never before.

My running mate, Vice President-elect Shettima, and I are aware of the upcoming difficulties. Moreover, we recognize and appreciate the talent and inherent goodness of you, the Nigerian people. We pledge to listen attentively and to carry out the difficult tasks and monumental deeds that will put us on the path to irreversible progress.

Please hold us accountable, but give us a chance first. Together, we will construct a society that is brighter and more productive today, tomorrow, and for years to come. Today, you have bestowed upon me the highest honor you can bestow upon an individual.

In return, as your next president and commander-in-chief, I will give you my all. Peace, unity, and prosperity will serve as the pillars of the society we intend to construct. When you see what we accomplish in the coming years, you will be proud to call yourself a Nigerian.

    I thank everyone.

Breaking: Tinubu files suit to restrain LP, PDP moves

The All Progressives Congress and its presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, filed a lawsuit on Tuesday, February 28th, 2023, to prevent the Labour Party and the People’s Democratic Party from interfering with the ongoing collation of Saturday’s presidential election results.

Breaking: Police arrest House of Reps Majority Leader

The suit was filed before the Federal High Court in Kano and was marked FHC/KN/CS/43/2023.

The Action Alliance and the Independent National Electoral Commission were added as defendants, with Kashim Shettima, the APC’s vice presidential candidate, also named as a plaintiff.

According to the report, the plaintiffs asked the court to make an order restraining the defendants from stopping the collation and announcement of the results in a motion on notice filed alongside the originating summons.

“A failure to comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act and the guidelines makes it imperative that all results recently uploaded on the IReV portal must be updated before they are announced.

    “INEC broke their promise…

This election is far from free, fair, or transparent. We will not participate in the electoral process currently underway at the National Collation Centre, and we demand that this sham election be cancelled immediately.

“We also call for a fresh election to be carried out in accordance to the laid down INEC procedure. As a result, we urge Yakubu to step down,” said the LP National Chairman, Julius Abure, who delivered the position of the three opposition parties.
