JUST IN: Former PDP Governor Dumps Party After Tinubu’s Victory, Says PDP Is Dead

Former PDP Governor Dumps Party After Tinubu’s Victory, Says PDP Is Dead

Former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party, the main opposition party (PDP).

Fayose announced his resignation from the PDP yesterday. Fayose served as Governor of Ekiti State on the PDP ticket from 2003 to 2007 and again from 2011 to 2015.

His decision to leave the party, however, appears to be linked to perceived irreconcilable differences in the PDP, which he claims has fractured the party.

He said: “Let me say this, from today(yesterday) I stay off PDP. In party politics there are certain facts you must be able to speak. I am 62 and I can’t, at this age, begin lying. When something is wrong with your family, confess.”

The former governor, who claimed to have fought for the party’s interests over the years, blamed the PDP’s loss in the presidential election on the party’s leadership.

According to him, the PDP was already fractured before the election, with so many disgruntled aspirants who were allegedly duped by the party’s leadership on the one hand and the presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar’s, inability to reach an agreement with the G-5 governors on the other.

Fayose traced the PDP’s problems back to the North-West zonal congress, which he claimed was rigged against Rabiu Kwankwaso in favor of Aminu Tambuwal, prompting the latter to leave the party.

“I warned Atiku that the problem will consume PDP. I told him there was danger ahead,” he said, adding that the G-5 governors demanded that Atiku make an official announcement to run for only one term and hand over to any member in the south but “Ayu was leading Atiku to Golgotha.”

Fayose warned the Labour Party’s candidate and second-place finisher in the presidential polls, Peter Obi, to “run away from the PDP” because the opposition’s current ovation has nothing to do with the PDP.

He believes that if the PDP had believed in Obi, he would have given him the party’s ticket.

He praised Obi’s courage in defeating Tinubu in Lagos, describing him as “a phenomenon” and “the man of the moment,” emphasizing that Obi’s victory in Lagos demonstrated that things have changed.

He argued that Obi’s victory in Lagos demonstrated that the process was transparent, and thus the election result should be accepted by all.

Fayose attributed the polls’ credibility to the use of the BVAS, which he claims is responsible for a more realistic number of voters than in the past, when over a million votes were cast in some Northern states.

He did, however, criticize some of the protesters who called for the elections to be canceled, describing them as PDP paid agents.

Aggrieved Nigerians under the aegis of Citizens Unite for Democracy (CUfD) on Wednesday staged a protest at the popular Unity Fountain in the nation’s capital Abuja over alleged manipulation of the 2023 general elections.

The placards-carrying protesters vowed to shut down the country over what they described as daylight robbery by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in connivance with the All Progressives Congress (APC) to subvert the will of Nigerians in the just concluded election.

Some of the inscriptions on their placards read; INEC Is Corrupt, Democracy Under Threat In Nigeria, INEC Keep Your Promise, INEC Is Bias, We Stand For Justice and others

Speaking on behalf of the group, Isaac Balami accused the electoral body of breaking the peace accord signed by the political parties by going ahead to declare the APC Candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the winner while millions of results have not yet been uploaded on the INEC Election Results Viewing Portal ( IReV).

He said they are ready to defend their mandate with the last drop of their blood just as he called for the total cancellation of the elections.

The protesters also called on the United Nations to prevail on President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that justice is done irrespective of whose ox is gored.

He said many protesters are coming from different states and they are ready to occupy Abuja with the view to regain their stolen mandate.

Also, armed security operatives including the Nigerian police, Department of State Security ( DSS ), Civil Defence Corps and others have been stationed within and around the venue of the protest to forestall possible breakdown of law and order.

US Government congratulates Tinubu on election victory

The United States on Wednesday congratulated Nigeria on the election of ruling party presidential candidate Bola Tinubu while calling for calm amid accusations of voter fraud and concerns over technical glitches.

Tinubu was declared the winner Tuesday of the February 25 polls in Africa’s most populous democracy.

“The United States congratulates the people of Nigeria, president-elect Tinubu and all the political leaders,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said.

“This competitive election represents a new period for Nigerian politics and democracy,” he added.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission, Tinubu, the candidate for the ruling All Progressives Congress, won 8.8 million votes, while main opposition candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi snagged 6.9 million and 6.1 million, respectively.

Price acknowledged the discontent among some Nigerians over the validity of the results, as at least one opposition figure has promised to dispute the outcome.

“We understand that many Nigerians and some of the parties have expressed frustration about the manner in which the process was conducted,” he said.

“Nigerians are clearly within their rights to have such concerns and should have high expectations for their electoral process,” Price said, urging political leaders to register their concerns through established legal “mechanisms.”

Nigerian officials had hoped new biometric voter identification technology would make the election the cleanest yet, but malfunctions, long delays and slow results have fueled the accusations of fraud.

“We call on all parties to refrain from violence or inflammatory rhetoric at this critical time,” Price said.

Yiaga Africa has said the results of Saturday’s presidential election from Imo and Anambra are inconsistent with its projections for the states.

This is contained in its post-election statement titled, ‘The 2023 presidential elections are once again a missed opportunity: INEC must be fundamentally reformed’.

It was jointly signed by Dr. Aisha Abdullahi, for Chair Watching The Vote; and Samson Itodo, Executive Director Yiaga Africa.

They said the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were manipulated.

“The state-level presidential results for Imo and Rivers are inconsistent with the Yiaga Africa WTV projections for both states. For Rivers, INEC announced 231,591 votes for APC or 44.2 percent; 175,071 for LP or 33.4 percent; and 88,468 for PDP or 16.9 percent.

“This is in sharp contrast to the Yiaga Africa WTV estimates for Rivers which are: APC 21.7 percent ±5.0 percent; for LP 50.8 percent ±10.6 percent; and PDP 22.2 percent ±6.5 percent.

“For Imo, INEC announced 66,406 for APC or 14.2 percent; 360,495 for LP or 77.1 percent; and 30,234; for PDP or 6.5 percent. Again, this is at variance with the Yiaga Africa WTV estimates for Imo which are: APC 5.1 ±2.3 percent; LP 88.1 percent ±3.8 percent; and PDP 5.7 percent ±2.3 percent.”

The organisation said based on reports from 97 percent of its sampled polling units (PUs), the All Progressives Congress (APC) had higher votes.

They said, “Based on reports from 97 percent (1,453 of 1507) of sampled polling units, Yiaga Africa’s statistical analysis shows that the APC should receive between 34.4 percent and 37.4 percent of the vote, LP should receive between 24.2 percent and 28.4 percent of the votes, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) should receive between 4.6 percent and 6.4 percent of the vote, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) should receive between 28.3 percent and 31.1 percent of the vote, while no other political party should receive more than 0.3% of the vote.”

The report recommended that INEC should clarify the inconsistencies in some of the results, especially from Rivers and Imo states; extend voting hours to 5:00pm in subsequent elections; as well as sustain the uploads of PU results form EC 8A on its IReV portal.

Has Wike’s son been shot dead in the US? Truth emerges as Rivers Govt reacts

The Rivers State Government has debunked claims in social media that the son of Governor Nyesom Wike was shot dead in the United States.

The state Commissioner for Information and Communication, Chris Finebone, said this while reacting to a trending post in social media that Wike’s son was shot dead in the US over the governor’s alleged activities in the just concluded Presidential and National Assembly elections in Rivers State.

BREAKING: Wike’s loyalist, Nnamani loses out as PDP withdraws from Enugu East Senatorial race

The post is captioned ‘Breaking news: Wike’s only son shot dead in California, US over father’s act in Rivers election’.

The post showed the governor’s son in a convocation gown at his graduation in a United Kingdom University last year, flanked by Wike, his wife Justice Suzette and their daughter, posing for the cameras.

But Finebone in a statement entitled ‘Yet again, another lie’, sent to newsmen in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, said the governor neither has a son or any child for that matter in the United States.

He said the post was the handiwork of those he described as wicked people who were bent on blackmailing and tarnishing the image of the Rivers State Governor, and urged members of the public to discountenance it.

The statement partly read, “This is a big lie by evil people. For the avoidance of doubt, Gov. Nyesom Wike has no son or child in the US. By the special grace of God, the governor’s children are safe and doing well where they are.

“This satanic rumour is yet another concoction by wicked people in their insidious quest to blackmail and tarnish the image of Gov. Wike. There is absolutely no truth in this cheap blackmail.

“The public should disregard and throw it into the trash can where it belongs,” it said.

While everyone expects the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to release and upload more results from the 2023 presidential election, there has been an outcry by some Nigerians who alleged that the announced results by INEC does not tally with that which was announced at their polling units.

Details: Tinubu PCC Calls for arrest of Pastor Paul Enenche, Dino

From reactions online, many are rooting for a massive protest.

In this light, the Founder and General Overseer of Dunamis International Gospel Centre, Pastor Paul Enenche while speaking on ‘What it means for God to answer by fire’, urged Nigerians to leave everything to God.

He went further to admonish Christians against violence as he said, “God answers consistently in line with His character (Deut. 4:24), God answers powerfully or forcefully, God answers mysteriously, God answers fearfully, God answers surprisingly (2 Chronicles 7:1), God answers expeditiously or speedily and God answers judgmentally.

“We are in a season of very drastic judgement. There are those who will sleep but won’t wake up. Don’t participate in any violent act that will destroy lives and properties. The battle is now of the Lord. You have done your part by voting. Now is time for prayers”.

In response to a BBC interview with his wife, Aisha, in which she questioned his leadership, President Muhammadu Buhari said in 2016: “I don’t know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen, my living room, and the other room.”

The fact that Remi and Bola both have a twisted sense of humour is one of the things that makes their friendship so endearing to observe.

Three Political Parties Demand Fresh Elections, Ask INEC Chairman To Step Aside

The Peoples Democratic Party, the Labour Party and the African Democratic Congress have asked the Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu, to step aside.

The three parties in a joint press conference on Tuesday, in Abuja, alleged that the February 2023 presidential and National Assembly elections were marred with violence, rigging and intimidation of voters.

The parties demanded the conduct of fresh elections.

“We are therefore constrained by this development to state that INEC compromised the integrity of this election even before collation commenced at the polling units.

“Section 60 sub-section 5 of the Electoral Act says that the presiding officer shall transfer the results, including total number of accredited voters and the results of the ballots in a manner as prescribed by the commission.

“A failure to comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act and the guidelines makes it imperative that all results recently uploaded on the IReV portal must be updated before they are announced.

“INEC went back on that promise…This election is not free and far from being fair and transparent.

“We shall not be part of the electoral process currently going on at the National Collation Centre and we demand that this sham of an election be immediately cancelled.

“We also call for a fresh election to be carried out in accordance to the laid down INEC procedure.

“We therefore call on Yakubu to step aside from his role,” the LP National Chairman, Julius Abure, who delivered the position of the three opposition parties, said.

The parties asked Yakubu to step aside from his role as INEC Chairman for a “credible personality” outside the commission to take his place and oversee the process that would be acceptable to all stakeholders and will restore the confidence of the international community, the democratic process and institutions.

“We have a responsibility to the millions of Nigerians who put their faith in us and our presidential candidates to defend our country from the forces that seek to tear us apart,” he added.

The parties therefore called on the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to stand by his promise to Nigerians to leave a legacy of a free, fair, transparent and credible election.

Abure said, “President Buhari, this is the time of great test of your integrity, use your office to save Nigeria from this electoral mismanagement and save your legacy.

“We call on Nigerians to join us in defending the democracy of our country.”

Present at the press briefing alongside LP’s Abure are the PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu; as well as their ADC counterpart, Ralph Nwosu.

Crisis in APGA as Top Party chieftain Slams Soludo

APGA chieftain blames Soludo for Anambra loss to Obi

The loss of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi, who carried the state by a tsunami, has been attributed to Anambra Governor Charles Soludo.

Afam Enemokwu, director of national operations for the APGA Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), accused the party hierarchy of failing to support its candidates, including Peter Umeadi, who lost the state’s presidential election to Obi.

Enemokwu asserted that the party leadership, led by Soludo, failed to ensure the success of APGA candidates.

Obi was declared the winner of all Anambra councils by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday with 584,621 votes, followed by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Atiku Abubakar with 9,021 votes.

Obi won Polling Unit 017 in the Agu Awka Ward located at Government House, whereas Umeadi received no votes.

Enemokwu insisted that the APGA’s leadership is responsible for the poor performance.

He stated, “Our presidential candidate is more qualified to win the election because he has what it takes to be President of Nigeria, but we did not do what we were supposed to do in the past due to a lack of funds, which was the only obstacle we faced in the presidential election.

“Without a doubt, Umeadi demonstrated in his individual capacity that he was capable, but the party and the Governor, who was elected on the APGA platform, have not supported him; in fact, the party leadership has abandoned him.

“Since the inauguration of the APGA Presidential Campaign Council, which spans all levels of the party, we have not been invited to a meeting, we have not been given direction, and there is no funding, so the APGA faithful are disappointed and frustrated that nothing, as it once was, has come from those in charge.”
