How Ex-Boko Haram Leader, Shekau, Fled Without Pregnant Wife — Army Tells NHRC

How Ex-Boko Haram Leader, Shekau, Fled Without Pregnant Wife — Army Tells NHRC

The Theater Commander, Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), Major General Ibrahim Sallau Ali, has narrated before the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, now the deceased leader of the Boko Haram terrorist sect, Abubakar Shekau, abandoned his wives and fled when Nigerian Armed Forces attacked his camp.

The top Army officer who appeared to testify before a panel the Commission constituted to investigate allegations of human rights violations against the Nigerian military, disclosed that one of the wives of the late terrorist leader that was left behind by her husband, was heavily pregnant.

He said the woman was subsequently handed over to government authorities that took care of her needs till she gave birth.

Major General Ali denied the allegation that women were maltreated by soldiers engaged in counter-terrorism operations in the North Eastern part of the country.

He described a report by an international media organization, Reuters, which accused the Nigerian Military of running a secret, systematic and illegal abortion program in the North East region of the country, as false and lacking in credibility.

It will be recalled that the report specifically alleged that the covert abortion program, which it said was backed by the government, had led to the illegal termination of at least 10, 000 pregnancies in the crisis torn states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, since 2013.

Irked by the report, the Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, General Lucky Irabor, had on December 16, 2022, stormed the NHRC, asking it to investigate the allegation.

Following the request, the Commission constituted a seven-man probe panel which is chaired by a retired Justice of the Court of Appeal, Justice Abdu Aboki.

Meanwhile, the Commission, in a statement it made available to newsmen through its Deputy Director, Public Relations and External Linkages, Hajiya Fatima Agwai Mohammed, revealed that Major Ali testified before the panel which sat in Maiduguri, on behalf of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

According to the statement, responding to questions by the general counsel to the panel, Mr. Hilary Ogbonna, Major General Ali, maintained that the illegal abortion report by the media outlet was “not just possible”.

He said the military was doing its best to restore peace and normalcy in the region.

Major General Ali said before he took over the counter-insurgency operations, terrorist hitherto controlled most things.

Terrorists were in the city, going to various houses and we made sure we arrested them”, he added.

Continuing, the witness said: “When I came on board an officer was shot in the mouth inside Damaturu by the insurgents in an unsuccessful attempt to kill, but he escaped and later on, there was a Bomb blast because the enemy’s vehicle was laden with explosive device”.

He further narrated to the panel, how he was injured by the insurgents on two different occasions.

He said the insurgents who were initially living in the cities with their families, later relocated and occupied the bushes.

On how his team encountered the Boko Haram leader, Major General Ali said: “The military moved against them and neutralized those who wanted to kill us.

“When we attacked them at one point during a clearance operation, the leader, Abubakar Shekau escaped, leaving his wives and we arrested and brought them to the State government lodge.

“One of Shekau’s wives was pregnant at that time and I think she even delivered successfully and I never had the experience of clearance operations targeted at women and children.

“We don’t arrest the women in the cities but rather focus on the men that carried arms against the State”.

On the allegation of massive killing of children on the premise that they were fathered by Boko Haram insurgents, Major General Ali who was formerly the Deputy Director of Logistics at the Army Headquarters, said the military operated with a high sense of professionalism and utmost regard for human life.

He said the military medical facility in Damaturu was not equipped to do surgery, adding that women were often referred to the University of Maiduguri when the need arose.

Similarly, the Borno State Coordinator of Civil Joint Task Force (CJTF), Mr Abba Aji Kalli, in his oral evidence before the panel, said they usually assist the military to navigate through pathways in the communities since they were more familiar with the terrain as indigenes of the state.

According to him, the CJTF members took an oath to remain fair to every member of the public, irrespective of whether they were friendly with them or not.

The CJTF leader told the panel that the military is professionally minded in their operations both on and off the battlefield.

He, therefore, dismissed the report of alleged illegal abortions by the military as false and unfounded.

Presidential Election: USA Government Grants Peter Obi Supporters Permission To Protest

Authorities in the United States have granted permission to supporters of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi to use a park to protest the outcome of the 2023 presidential election in Nigeria.

The permit allows about 100 protesters to converge on the iconic Lafayette Park in Washington D.C. on April 3 for four hours. Located across the street from the White House, the park is a prominent fixture in American history.

“We in the diaspora are demonstrating to call the attention of the US government and Biden administration to not recognize the winner,” the organisers said.

The United States Department of said the organisers and anyone at the protest must “comply with all reasonable directions of the United States Park Police”.

The protesters were warned that “all sideways, walkways and roadways must remain unobstructed to allow for the reasonable use of these areas by pedestrians, vehicles, and other park visitors.”

The protest is organised by a pro-Peter Obi group, Nigerian American Coalition for Justice and Democracy Inc.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, lost the election to Bola Tinubu, a former Lagos State governor and candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

A document seen by The Guardian shows that the organiser of the protest is one Franklin Ekechukwu.

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday, March 1, announced Tinubu as the winner of the presidential election. A total of 18 candidates contested.

INEC said Tinubu polled 8,794,726 votes to defeat fellow contenders – Atiku Abubakar of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) who polled 6,984,520 votes, Labour Party’s Peter Obi had 6,101,533 votes to come third and candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) Rabiu Kwankwaso with 1,496,687 votes.

Abubakar and Obi said the election was flawed and accused the ruling APC and the electoral body of rigging the ballot in Tinubu’s favour.

Both candidates want the court to order INEC to pronounce them as the winner of the election and declare that Tinubu was not qualified to run for office of Nigeria president.

Arrest Peter Obi With Immediate Effect, His Supporters Calling For Coup — Fani-Kayode Tells Security Agencies

The former aviation minister has said that Peter Obi should be arrested for allegedly inciting and plotting a coup d’état in the country.

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council’s Director of New Media, Femi Fani-Kayode, has called for the arrest of the presidential candidates and vice-presidential candidates of the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 election.

The former aviation minister said they should be arrested for allegedly inciting and plotting a coup d’état in the country.

President-Elect Tinubu Resting In France, Needs More Prayers — Masari

Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi are the presidential candidates of the PDP and Labour Party respectively in the February 25 presidential election. Their running mates are Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State and Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed respectively.

Condemning Wednesday’s #Free Nigeria Movement protest against the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof Mahmood Yakubu and the conduct of the February 25 presidential election, Fani-Kayode called for their arrest and prosecution.

He said their alleged open call for a coup d’état to prevent the handover and inauguration of Bola Tinubu, who was declared winner of the election, is a treasonable felony.

Fani-Kayode said, “Shielding and protecting them from being held accountable for their utterances and actions and for supporting anarchy, chaos, treason and rebellion is becoming increasingly dangerous and does not augur well for the peace and stability of our country.

“It is also important to arrest and charge to court those young men and women that participated in Tuesday’s protest and openly called for a coup d’état in order to deter others from doing so.”

He, however, warned that failure to arrest, Obi, Atiku, the protesters and their collaborators will encourage others to do the same, adding that “there is far more to the whole thing than meets the eye.”

Commending the Federal Government on the ban placed on anti-inauguration protests, Fani-Kayode described it as encouraging.

He said it “is a clear indication of the total commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari administration to preserving and protecting democracy and to ensuring that there is a smooth transition of power to the incoming President-elect and his Government.”

He continued, “It is this clear commitment that has kept the peace and given us hope in spite of the shenanigans and mischief of an irresponsible, bitter, vicious, dangerous, petty, hostile and increasingly desperate, bellicose and violent opposition who are capable of doing anything to take power.

“It is time for the intelligence and security agencies and the Buhari administration to rise to the occasion and face the challenge of these subversive and destabilising elements squarely and with a very firm hand.”

He warned that, if need be, he would defend the mandate of the ‘President-elect’, Tinubu, with the last drop of his blood.

Similarly, the spokesperson for the APC PCC, Festus Keyamo a few weeks ago wrote to the Department of State Services (DSS), asking it to arrest Obi and his deputy, Baba-Ahmed for their alleged incitement.

Fani-Kayode’s statement titled, “Arrest The Rebels And Treasonable Subversives,” reads, “Last Tuesday I was sent a video of an angry crowd of members of the opposition violently marching through the streets of our nation’s capital Abuja, loudly chanting and proclaiming that the INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu, was nothing but “a thief” and that the inauguration of our President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which is scheduled to hold on May 29th must not be allowed to proceed.

“As if that were not bad enough, later on the same day I was sent another video which showed the same members of the opposition protesting at the gates of Defence Headquarters in Abuja and loudly calling on the military to take over power in our country.

“Assuming these videos are authentic these acts are not only outrageous, subversive and dangerous but they are also acts of treason, rebellion and insurrection.

“We have warned about these sinister plots and plans for months and well before the presidential elections but no one took us seriously and it was to no avail.

“Now the signs are obvious and ominous and it is clear that there is something evil afoot.

“It is heartwarming and encouraging that the DSS, as alive to their duties as ever, finally issued a statement yesterday in which they vindicated us.

“They confirmed the fact that there were some elements within the political class that were planning to use violence to impose an Interim National Government and went on to not only warn those that seek to implement this hidden agenda but also to assure those of us that are against it that they would take strong measures and move against them.

“This is vital in order for us to protect and save our democracy from those that seek to truncate it and establish an unconstitutional form of Government in its stead.

“It is incumbent upon us all as democrats to speak out in support of the DSS and to help them thwart the evil plans of the unscrupulous conspirators, dangerous plotters, unpatriotic elements and fascistic forces that want to topple our Government and abort the democratic process.”

He continued, “For 16 years, from 1983 till 1999, many of us fought against military rule and paid a high price in that fight. Others that came before us fought it between 1966 and 1979. They also paid a high price.

“During the course of all those years many suffered, many were tortured, many were exiled, many lost everything, many were destroyed, many were jailed and many were martyred.

“These young ones that are protesting have no idea about the inherent horrors of military rule and what it really means because they were not born when the soldiers held sway in our country and they do not know the indignities and bondage that we were subjected to as a people during the course of those years.

“The fact that some are openly calling for a return to those dark days gives many of us deep concern.

“The last thing we need in our country today is military intervention, a military coup d’etat or any other form of unconstitutional Government including an Interim National Government.

“It is obvious that these young ones that are calling for military intervention are being encouraged, sponsored and used by elements in the opposition to truncate our democracy.

“When one couples these calls for a coup d’etat with the words of Datti Baba Ahmed, the Vice Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, on Channels Television last week when he said that he had no faith in the courts and election tribunals, that the swearing-in of President-elect Tinubu as President would be an invitation to a military coup, that Tinubu is a Mafia Don that is deeply involved in organised crime and that his swearing-in would be a danger to “all our lives”, one gets the message and can connect the dots of this great conspiracy.

“The Atiku group through their numerous spokespersons have said equally disturbing things including consistently calling the President-elect a “Pablo Escobar-like drug baron” in order to incite the people, the international community, the civil society, the people of Nigeria and the Nigerian Armed Forces against him.

Outside of that the opposition have also targeted INEC and the Nigerian Judiciary for a campaign of calumny, demonisation and destruction and they have engaged and induced elements in the international community, including politicians, leaders, businessmen, diplomats, international institutions and both local and foreign NGO’s, who they have misled and fed with the most horrendous lies and propaganda, to assist them.

“It is time for the intelligence and security agencies and the Buhari administration to rise to the occasion and face the challenge of these subversive and destabilising elements squarely and with a very firm hand.

“They should arrest those that appear to be behind this evil plot including Peter Obi, Dati Baba Ahmed, Atiku Abubakar, Ifeanyi Okowa and their numerous spokesmen, associates and foreign collaborators in order to find out exactly what their role is in this matter and the part, if any, that they are playing in it.

“They should also identify, ascertain and arrest their collaborators, both foreign and local, in this treasonous plot.

“None of them enjoys immunity and none of them are above the law.

“Shielding and protecting them from being held accountable for their utterances and actions and for supporting anarchy, chaos, treason and rebellion is becoming increasingly dangerous and does not augur well for the peace and stability of our country.

“It is also important to arrest and charge to court those young men and women that participated in Tuesday’s protest and openly called for a coup d’etat in order to deter others from doing so.”

Afenifere insists Obi won presidential poll, suspends two principal officers

Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, is insisting that Peter Obi is the rightful winner of the February 25, election. The group has also sacked two of its national officers, the National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi and the National Organising Committee, Abagun Kole Omololu, for issuing an unauthorised statement in its name and constant denigration of the organisation.

Afenifere made the submission in a communique issued and signed by Ayo Adebanjo, leader of the group and Sola Ebiseni, the group’s secretary-general, after the group’s monthly general meeting, held at the residence of its Leader, Adebanjo at Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State.

Abagun Omololu recently issued a statement warning Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, chairman of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo council of elders, to stop insulting the Yoruba race.

We Thought The ‘Obidient’ And Peter Obi Wave Was A Joke — Ex-Minister

But the group, in the communique, said that it received a message credited to Emmanuel Iwunayanwun in a viral video alleging indictment of the Yoruba as political rascals on account of ethnic violence deployed by politicians of the ruling party in Lagos State.

Afenifere said: “On the analysis of the video and information at the disposal of Afenifere by people at the Anambra State gathering, we are convinced that the Igbo leader rightly asserted that the Yoruba and Igbo were not at war and truly condemned the shenanigans of some political rascals.

“Flowing from the above, Afenifere state that it never issued any statement and dissociate the Organisation from any such statement against L Iwunayanwun.

“Observed the uncouth activities and unauthorised statements in its name and to the constant denigration of the organisation, by Jare Ajayi, the National Publicity Secretary and Abagun Kole Omololu the National Organising Committee.

“After due consideration of the unending embarrassing conduct of the two officers, the Meeting resolved that they be and are hereby removed immediately from their respective offices and their membership be suspended pending further decisions after their appearance before and recommendations by the disciplinary committee.

” We restate our position that in accordance with the hallowed Yoruba culture of civilised conduct, Afenifere assures all person resident in Yorubaland, indigenes and non-indigenes, of protection in the conduct of their lawful duties and thus warn all threats mongers and merchants of violence.”

The group, also reiterated its position that “the Presidential election held on the 25th of February 2023 was characterised by all forms of primitive manipulations and noncompliance with the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Electoral Act 2022 and the Guidelines and Regulations made pursuant thereto with concomitant legislative force.

“The results of the lawful votes at the Presidential election available to the Afenifere through credible sources confirm that Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, won the said election and we, thus, support his decision challenging the contrary declaration by the INEC,” the group added.

They reasserted that for equity, fairness, national cohesion and peaceful corporate existence, the next President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria shall be a person of its southern part and specifically the South-East.

It Condemned in the strongest terms, the campaigns of calumny and acts of ethnic violence deployed by some politicians and their hired criminal gangs in several parts of the federation during the gubernatorial election particularly Lagos State where the election was made to appear like an inter-ethnic war between the Yoruba and Igbo which greatly led to voters’ suppression and other forms of deliberate disenfranchisement through brigandage.

The group expressed its belief in the judiciary as an integral part of the democratic process and expect that it proves itself in the election litigations now pending before it without fear or favour and in accordance with the judicial oaths of its members, in covenant with the Nigerian people.

They, therefore, called on the President and Government of Nigeria to restore the patriotic confidence and hope of the Nigerian people in the continued corporate existence of the federation which will guarantee their safety throughout Nigeria.

Afenifere appreciated the genuine and renewed interests of the international community in the security and democratic health of Nigeria and urge that as a prominent member of the global community, the affairs of Nigeria should continue to be of concern to the world.

  • President-Elect Tinubu Resting In France, Needs More Prayers — Masari

President-Elect Tinubu Resting In France, Needs More Prayers — Masari

President-Elect Tinubu Resting In France, Needs More Prayers — Masari

Governor Aminu Masari says President-elect Bola Tinubu needs more prayers from Nigerians to enable his incoming regime to succeed.

Mr Tinubu has not been seen in public seven days after he was secretly flown abroad in a clandestine trip that his senior aides call a “resting trip.” On Wednesday evening, a spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, insisted that Mr Tinubu is in France and “in touch” with his aides.

Mr Masari made the call for more prayers for the president-elect during a special breaking of fast and prayer session organised on Wednesday at the Government House, Katsina.

According to the governor, Mr Tinubu used to organise such prayer sessions every year during Ramadan.

“This year’s session is specially organised to thank the almighty God for our success during the recent general elections in the country. There is nothing we can do except thank God for the success recorded in Katsina and Nigeria in general,” stated the Katsina governor.

Mr Masari added, “This is the main reason why we are here together with religious, traditional leaders, government officials and other stakeholders. He is now to be the new president. Hence he needs more prayers. Thank God people have understood that after electing leaders, prayers must be the next.”

Last week, Mr Onanuga said in a message to our correspondent that Mr Tinubu travelled abroad to rest and will soon return to the country, saying the president-elect “travelled to rest after the hectic electioneering” and “will soon return home.”

Mr Tinubu, 71, could find himself explaining yet again his medical status that has drawn keen interest from a sceptical public. In recent years, Mr Tinubu has made several emergency trips abroad, including in late January 2022 when he was rushed to London while the primary campaign was underway.

Shortly after returning from the London trip, Mr Tinubu appeared to urinate on himself while visiting a prominent traditional ruler in the country’s southwest.

In September 2022, Mr Tinubu was again in London, where he reportedly received treatments from several doctors for weeks. He also strapped a urine bag on himself during the trip.

Despite several indications that Mr Tinubu might not be in good health, the political kingmaker-turned-president-elect has maintained that he is physically and mentally fit to govern.

He admitted at least once that he might lack physical strength but said his mental capacity would be sufficient to pilot the nation’s affairs.

Incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari is also infamous for making regular trips to London to treat undisclosed ailments. During his eight-year tenure, Mr Buhari spent several months on a single trip to London.

He has never publicly revealed the nature of his ailment and how much it cost Nigerian taxpayers to treat him.

Assault: Police Give Portable 72-hour Ultimatum To Report Himself

Habeeb Okikiola aka Portable, a Nigerian musician, has been given 72 hours to report to the Ogun State Police Command.

Police stated that if he does not comply, he will be arrested.

Wednesday’s statement from the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the development.

Mr. Oyeyemi stated that Portable had been warned to turn himself in to the police or face arrest.

Additionally, he confirmed that Portable’s father had intervened on his behalf and promised to bring him to the station.

Two videos of the artist cursing at officers of the Ogun State Force went viral on Tuesday.

In the video, Portable asserts that an internet fraudster brought police to his bar “for no reason” to arrest him and his staff.

However, the Ogun state police spokesperson, Oyeyemi, explained that the police moved to arrest Portable after sending him six invitations and one through his father, none of which he honoured.

He added that the Zazu singer was invited in response to a petition from a young studio owner who claimed that Portable and his associates beat him unconscious and locked his studio.

Oyeyemi stated, “Upon receiving the petition, he was sent an invitation letter five times, but he declined to appear at the police station. A second invitation letter was sent to him via his father, but he did not show up at the station.

“In order to prevent a breakdown of law and order, his arrest was scheduled to take place on Tuesday. However, he has now released a series of videos in which he says various things. His father has been pleading, but we have informed him that if (Portable) does not surrender by Friday, he will be arrested.”

In 2022, Portable’s father accompanied him to the Police Headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, after the singer refused to honour a police invitation regarding the alleged assault of a disc jockey in the Sango region of the state.

Labour Party Slams DSS after it’s confirmation of plot to install interim govt, make strong revelation

Labour Party kicks as DSS confirms plot to install interim government, slams the secret police for turning a blind eye to electoral violence

The Labour Party (LP) has stated that the ‘threat’ of the Department of State Services will not intimidate Nigerians.

The Labour Party, via its Chief Spokesperson Yunusa Tanko, expressed confidence that citizens would not abandon their “legitimate right” to seek judicial redress “to reclaim their mandate which was freely given to the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, which was brazenly stolen.”

Recall that the DSS stated on Wednesday that the plot by “misguided” political actors to suspend the constitution and install an interim government is real.

Peter Afunanya, spokesman for the DSS, vowed in a statement that the secret police would employ all available weapons to foil the plot.

Tanko was perplexed as to why it took the security agency so long to take proactive measures to prevent chaos when thugs intimidated voters in several regions of Nigeria during the recently concluded general elections.

“The LP and Nigerians cannot be intimidated, truth be told. When the DSS was required to issue a warning, it failed to do so. It failed to do so, and this gave impetus to those who desired to derail the democratic system and escape.

According to Yemi-Esan, the date for the new appointees’ inauguration and deployment will be announced in due time.

Meanwhile, The Department of State Security Services (DSS) has confirmed a plot to install an interim government in Nigeria and thwart Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s inauguration as president.

    Below is a Service statement signed by its spokesperson, Peter Afunanya (Ph.D.);

“The Department of State Services (DSS) has identified several key participants in the Nigerian coup plot. The Service views the plot, which is being pursued by these entrenched interests, as not only an anomaly but also a mischievous attempt to subvert the constitution, undermine civil rule, and precipitate an avoidable national crisis.

Also Read: Pope Francis In Hospital With Respiratory Infection

Illegality is completely unacceptable in a democracy and among Nigerians who value peace. This is exacerbated by the fact that the vast majority of the nation’s elections were conducted without incident.”

“In their numerous meetings, the planners have considered various options, including, among others, sponsoring endless violent mass protests in major cities to justify a State of Emergency declaration. Another strategy is to obtain frivolous court injunctions to prevent the inauguration of new executive administrations and legislative chambers at the federal and state levels.

“The DSS supports the President and Commander-in-commitment Chief’s to a smooth transition and will work diligently in this direction.

In addition, it supports the Presidential Transition Council and similar organisations in Nigeria. It will collaborate with them and other security and law enforcement agencies to ensure that inaugurations on May 29, 2023, proceed without incident.”

“Therefore, the Service strongly warns those conspiring to undermine democracy in the country to abandon their devious schemes and plots.”

China-Exim Bank has rejected Nigeria’s $22,798,446,773 loan request earlier approved by the National Assembly, Ejes Gist News reports.

The House of Representatives, on Tuesday, approved the request by the Federal Government to borrow $973,474,971.38 from China Development Bank.

This followed the decision by the China-Exim Bank to reject Nigeria’s $22,798,446,773 loan request earlier approved by the National Assembly.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business, Abubakar Fulata, moved a motion for the legislative chamber to amend its resolution granting approval for the failed loan deal.

The motion was titled ‘Rescission of the 2016–2018 Federal Government External Borrowing (Rolling) Plan.’

Moving the motion, Fulata said, “The House notes that the 2016–2018 Federal Government External Borrowing (Rolling) Plan was approved by the Senate and the House of Representatives on March 5, 2020, and June 2, 2020, respectively.

“The House recalls that the National Assembly approved the sum of $22,798,446,773 only under the 2016–2018 Medium Term External Borrowing (Rolling) plan. The House is aware of the communications from the Federal Ministry of Finance requesting approval of modifications to the financing proposal for the Nigerian Railway Modernisation Project (Kaduna–Kano segment) occasioned by the COVID–19 pandemic, whereof China Exim Bank withdrew its support to finance the project.”

He added, “The House is also aware that to secure funds for the project, the contractor (CCECC Nigeria Limited), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Transportation, engaged China Development Bank as the new financier in the sum of $973,474,971.38 only.”

Fulata, therefore, prayed the House to “rescind its decision on the financier and harmonised terms and approve the change of financier from China Exim Bank to China Development Bank.”

The lawmakers unanimously granted the prayer.

PDP Lost Election In Cross River Because It Failed To Respect Zoning — Party Chieftain

PDP Lost Election In Cross River Because It Failed To Respect Zoning — Party Chieftain

A Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Cross River State, Barrister Essien Ita, on Wednesday 29th March, said that the abysmal performance of the party in the just concluded elections was due to the refusal of the state exco to respect the zoning principle that had existed since 1999.

Barrister Ita contended that the outcome of the 2023 gubernatorial polls was a referendum by the people of Cross River State that zoning must be maintained and power must go to the South.

Cross River Guber Polls: Liyel Imoke, Gershom Bassey, congratulate Prince Otu

In what appeared to be a consensus and protest votes, the majority of the Cross River state people irrespective of party affiliation decided to pitch their tent with the APC candidate, Prince Bassey Otu, which in turn gave the party the victory.

Reacting to the development, Barrister Ita congratulated the governor-elect for the victory at the polls and also advised him on the key areas he should concentrate on in view of the poor economic status of the state in order to make an impact.

According to him, “The 2023 gubernatorial elections have come and gone and the APC candidate, Prince Bassey Otu has been declared the winner. He trounced Prof. Sandy Onoh of the PDP like a mother would do her little stubborn child and showed Sandy political superiority. Prof. Sandy says he wants to go to court, it’s within his rights to do so but he needs to know that the court will find it extremely difficult to upturn an election that he lost with such a wide margin.

“There is a Chinese saying that a farmer who plants his seeds on “sandy” soil is doomed to a poor harvest, so PDP’s defeat did not come to me as a surprise, it is actually a well-deserved defeat. The treachery in the party has finally nailed the coffin for those who sold their birthright for a bowl of porridge, they failed to understand that when you sell your brother to a stranger for a piece of silver, the stranger treats you with a lot of suspicion and disdain.”

He further stated that ”the Cross River State PDP Exco also contributed to the party’s poor outing in the elections. For crumbs, they blindly supported and officially promoted Wike’s anti-party posture and refused to openly campaign or support the candidacy of Atiku Abubakar. For crumbs, they worked against the laid down zoning formula of the state which culminated in the party’s waterloo at the polls”

He maintains that “now that the elections are over and the PDP intends to wield its stick of discipline, it should immediately invoke Articles 9.1 (d)(f)(k) and Article 21.1(c)(f)(h) of the PDP Constitution and properly discipline the rudderless state Exco for dividing the party and officially upholding an anti-party posture that led the party to defeat.”

Continuing, he said, “For Prince Otu Bassey, the governor-elect of Cross River State, I don’t envy you at all for the task ahead of you is quite enormous and daunting. The first issue you will encounter I suspect, will be shabby and untidy hand-over documents calculated to conceal discrepancies in your predecessor’s government.

“The proper status of the numerous projects of your predecessor may not be known, and monies spent and profit made on projects may not be known. You have also been incapacitated by Cross River State’s inability to assess loans because of our huge debt burden and our dwindling revenue occasioned by the loss of Bakassi”.

“You must look inward and help Cross River state stand tall on its feet.”

He further continued by stating that “all hopes are not lost, instead of immediately commencing new projects, please leverage on some of the industrial projects that your predecessor has put in place that are viable but not the superhighway please.

“The Automated Cocoa Processing factory in Ikom, Ogoja Ultra-Modern Rice Mill, 23 Megawatt Power Plant in Calabar, Bekwarra Groundnut Mill, and Cally air are some of them”.

He noted that, “the 2nd Subnational Ease of Doing Business Ranking of 2023 shows that Cross River State has dropped from 28th position to 33 positions in Ease of Doing Business, meaning the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) is dwindling. It, therefore, behoves you the governor-elect to attract investments and create enabling environments for businesses to thrive with ease in Cross River in order to ramp up the state’s IGR.

“You will also need to demand from the Federal Government an improvement and timely disbursement of the Bakassi Stabilization fund.”

Ita advised that “now that President Muhammadu Buhari has assented to the Fifth Alteration Bill allowing states to generate, transmit and distribute electricity, you may need to look in this direction with a view to commencing power projects that will bring about the generation, transmission and distribution of sufficient megawatts that will help strengthen small scale businesses and boost Cross River state IGR.”

He concluded by advising that ” Cross River governor-elect should please jettison the idea of having a “food on the table” cabinet, it will not bring you or Cross River State any good. Focus on how to rejig the economy of the state and not the stomach of a few.”

Plot To Install Interim Government Is Real, Says DSS

The Department of State Services (DSS) says it has confirmed a plot “by some key players” to install an interim government and stop Bola Ahmed Tinubu from being inaugurated as president.

In a statement on Wednesday, Peter Afunanya, the public relations officer of the secret police, said: “The Department of State Services (DSS) has identified some key players in the plot for an Interim Government in Nigeria.

“The Service considers the plot, being pursued by these entrenched interests, as not only an aberration but a mischievous way to set aside the constitution and undermine civil rule as well as plunge the country into an avoidable crisis.

“The illegality is totally unacceptable in a democracy and to the peace loving Nigerians. This is even more so that the machination is taking place after the peaceful conduct of the elections in most parts of the country.”
