Obi-datti: Tinubu Petitions NBC, Wants Channels TV Sanctioned

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the incoming president, has petitioned the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to sanction Channels Television for allegedly violating the Nigerian Broadcasting Code during an interview with Datti Baba-Ahmed, the vice presidential candidate of the Labour Party.

In a petition dated 30 March 2023 and signed by Bayo Onanuga, director of media and publicity for the All Progressives Congress presidential campaign council, the president-elect stated:

“In accordance with Section 14.0.1 of the 6th edition of the Nigerian Broadcasting Code, which states that it is the responsibility of the National Broadcasting Commission to accept complaints from aggrieved persons, bodies, or members of the public and investigate as well as apply sanctions when necessary, the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council hereby petitions the Commission on what it considers to be breaches by CHANNELS TV last week on its programme ‘Politics Today’ which

The former governor of Lagos State has accused Baba-Ahmed of disparaging the 25 February 2023 presidential elections on multiple occasions. In the interview, Datti criticised Tinubu’s election as president-elect and demanded that President Buhari and the Chief Justice of Nigeria refuse to swear him in.

Tinubu stated in his petition that the host of the show should have cautioned the Labour party candidate for making such unguarded remarks, and that the station should be punished for failing to do so.

Tinubu Petitions NBC, Wants Channels TV Sanctioned

    The petition reads in part

“According to him (Datti), the Labour Party won the election. This argument is fallacious and incorrect. According to the Code, a Broadcaster is liable if he permits his guest to make a false and unfounded statement. The Independent National Electoral Commission released the only empirically compiled facts as the final result, which placed the Labour Party third.

Datti Baba-Ahmed, a guest on the aforementioned programme, stated that President Muhammadu Buhari should not swear in the President-elect because he did not receive 25% of the vote in the FCT, one of the requirements for being declared the winner. This is a subversive statement given that the matter is currently before the tribunal and is among the issues raised in their court petition. Therefore, until the court rules otherwise, the status quo is the INEC position as declared in the final results, unless the court rules otherwise.

The comments made by the guest Datti Baba Ahmed about the Labour Party winning the presidential election undermine the constitutional authority granted to INEC in Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution as the body with the authority to conduct and announce the results of national general elections. Any additional figures must be certified by the tribunal as authentic.

Mr. Datti’s remark that the INEC certificate of return issued to the President-elect is a “bad check” and therefore invalid is not only divisive, subversive, and inciting, but also provocative and incendiary.

Section 3.8.1(b) of the Code states, “A Broadcaster shall ensure that no programme contains anything that amounts to subversion of constituted authority or threatens the unity or corporate existence of Nigeria as a sovereign state.”

Mr. Datti Baba-statement Ahmed’s that if President Buhari handed over power to President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu by May 29, it would be the end of democracy is another example of an unguarded utterance.

This violates Section 5.3.3(b), which states: “A Broadcaster shall avoid inflammatory and divisive matters in their provocative form when using political content.”

In addition, Section 3.0.2.1 states: ‘No Broadcaster shall encourage or incite to crime, lead to public disorder or hatred, or be repugnant to public feelings’ This refers to content that is deemed offensive to the public.

By contesting the authenticity of the INEC Presidential election results, Mr. Datti is free to seek their nullification, but until a court or tribunal overturns them, they remain authentic. Channels TV cannot encourage him to use its platform to promote anarchy by allowing him to dispute results on air without verifying his claims.

In asking the President not to swear in the President-elect, he undermines the constitutionally guaranteed authority of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC.

By using phrases such as “handing over to President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu will be the end of democracy,” he is not only promoting a threat, but also inciting an uprising against the government. This is contrary to the use of the media to promote social harmony and peaceful coexistence.

We are of the opinion that the guest Datti Baba-Ahmed was not only provocative, but also incited the general public and Labour Party supporters to question the legitimacy of the election results and promote resistance against the incoming administration. pertaining to Bola Ahmed-Tinubu and Kashim Shettima.

We therefore urge the Commission to impose the appropriate sanctions on Channels TV for the aforementioned violations.”

I Predicted The Peter Obi Effect, But My Party Neglected Him — Ikpeazu Opens Up Finally

The Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu, has identified “The Peter Obi effect” as one of the major reasons his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost the governorship election in the state, saying that he predicted it.

The PDP’s original candidate Uche Ikonne died weeks to the poll and the party replaced him with Okey Ahiwe, who was defeated at the poll by Alex Otti of the Labour Party.

Ikpeazu, who also lost his senatorial bid, said he said he informed his party to anticipate “The Peter Obi effect” at the poll.

“That Peter Obi effect, I predicted it and told my party. I even volunteered that reasonable politicians should not ignore what Peter Obi was doing,” he said.

The governor said he never personally campaigned against the former Anambra State governor as all he wanted was a president from the southern region of the country.

On Peter Obi’s effect after the election, Ikpeazu said, “What would happen going forward will be determined by how Peter Obi manages the groundswell of support that he had gathered. How is he going to funnel this towards an agenda that can eventually materialise in his dream?”

The Abia governor was one of the five PDP governor known as the G5 who did not support the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar. Ikpeazu said he doesn’t regret being part of the group.

Ikpeazu said, “I think that (being part of G5) is one of the most brilliant decisions I have taken as a politician.”

The incumbent’s preferred candidate, Ahiwe, lost the Abia governorship election while Ikpeazu himself also lost his bid to represent Abia North Senatorial District in the National Assembly to the incumbent Senator, Enyinnaya Abaribe of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

However, he said if losing those elections are the sacrifice for his principled position for presidency to return to the South, he was okay with it.

Abia State Governor Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has come forward to reveal that he lodged a complaint with INEC prior to the election, claiming that he had investigated Professor Nnenna Oti’s background and determined that she was unqualified to handle the collation of results for the governorship election in Abia State

In an interview that aired on Channels tonight, Governor Ikpeazu claimed that Professor Oti had revealed her bias during the Abia gubernatorial election by the service she delivered.

On tonight’s episode of Channels, he says it himself…

“I complained to INEC after doing some research and realizing that she wasn’t going to be impartial; they informed me that they had profiled her, but I still can’t believe it. And what she has betrayed, after her service or stewardship in Abia, shows that she is obviously pleased with what she done, which indicates that she has some degree of prejudice for one party or another. She has revealed that she brought with her an independent frame of mind.”

PDP Reverses Suspension Of Ortom, Shema, Anyim, Others

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at its meeting today, Thursday, March 30, 2023 extensively discussed recent developments in the Party.

The NWC recognized the imperativeness of a total reconciliation among Party leaders and critical stakeholders for a more cohesive Party in the overall interest of our teeming members and Nigerians in general.

Northern Governor Storms Rivers To Visit Wike, As PDP Crisis Deepens

Consequent upon the above, the NWC reverses the referral of the Governor of Benue State, His Excellency, Dr. Samuel Ortom to the National Disciplinary Committee.

The NWC in the same vein reverses the suspension of the following underlisted members of our great Party:

    1. H.E Ibrahim Shema (Katsina State)

    2. Ayodele Fayose (Ekiti State)

    3. Sen. Pius Anyim (Ebonyi State)

    4. Prof. Dennis Ityavyar (Benue State)

    5. Dr. Aslam Aliyu (Zamfara State)

This decision is without prejudice to the powers of the NWC to take necessary disciplinary action against any member of the Party at any time pursuant to the provisions of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017).

The NWC charges all leaders, critical stakeholders and teeming members of our Party across the country to be guided by the provisions of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017) as well as the new spirit and necessity of reconciliation, unity and harmony in our Party at this critical time.

The PDP must remain focused as we continue to take every necessary action to recover the stolen mandate freely given by Nigerians to our Party and Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar, on Saturday February 25, 2023, at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.

DSS To Arrest Peter Obi, Atiku, Before May 29 — Ex-APC Chieftain Opens Up

DSS Plan To Arrest Peter Obi, Atiku, Before May 29 — Ex-APC Chieftain Opens Up

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of
the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, on Thursday, described the alarm about a plot to foist an Interim National Government (ING) on the country as a ploy by security agencies to arrest the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar and his Labour Party (LP) counterpart, Peter Obi, before the May 29 handover date.

The DSS had on Wednesday in Abuja accused those it referred to as “entrenched interests” of plotting to subvert democracy by forcing the emplacement of an ING in the country.

Plot To Install Interim Government Is Real, Says DSS

In a statement issued by the former APC Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Frank in reaction to the DSS’ claim, said the secret police know more than they chose to tell Nigerians and urged them to be more forthcoming.

He said the security alarm by the agency was meant as an alibi to crackdown on peaceful protesters demonstrating against the rigged 2023 presidential election and to massively arrest opposition politicians in the country.

He said: “The DSS’ purported intelligence is fake. It is a plot to crackdown on protesters and arrest opposition political leaders before May 29.

“We have credible information that the DSS issued the statement in preparation for its planned disruption of ongoing protest by Nigerians who are demonstrating peacefully to demand for justice and the restoration of their stolen mandate.”

Frank, who is the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP), Ambassador to East Africa and Middle East, said that the DSS ought to have used the same intelligence to stop abuse and killing of Nigerians by terrorists groups over the years.

He said: “Where was their intelligence when the Independent National Electoral Commission and Mahmood Yakubu were compromised to rig the 2023 general election?

“Nigerians have been under siege by bandits, kidnappers and terrorists for a long time now, but the DSS never gave intelligence to foil kidnapping, heinous attacks, maiming and killings of innocent Nigerians.

“The only time you see the DSS coming up to talk about intelligence is whenever Nigerians are preparing to either protest against obnoxious government policies, rules, human rights abuses or carrying out lawful political activities.

“The DSS must stop this method of intimidating Nigerians, especially politicians, whenever they want to exercise their constitutional rights.

“In fact, we dare the DSS or any other security outfit in the country to arrest Atiku and Obi before May 29 and see the wrath of Nigerians.”

He however called on protesters not to be intimidated by “this DSS’ fake intelligence of a phantom ING plot.”

He enjoined the UK, US and EU to immediately call on the Nigerian Government to allow Nigerians to exercise their democratic rights which is to ensure that the stolen mandate of the Nigerian people is restored through peaceful protests and the judicial process.

He added: “We are aware that the DSS is planning to sponsor counter protests across the country to clash with the peaceful protesters and use that as an excuse to clampdown on them.

“We dare the DSS to name those involved in the phantom plot if they genuinely have the ‘intelligence’ about a m plot to instigate an ING so the world will know those who plan to stop the inauguration of the President.

“But we know they are not being sincere. This is often their style whenever they want to engage in propaganda and do a hatchet job.

“On the contrary, let them name the purported politicians involved in the plot. Their real intent is to clampdown on protesters and arrest Atiku and Obi before May 29. Nothing more.

“We use this opportunity to call on the international community to prevail on President Muhammadu Buhari to call the DSS to order and stop them from meddling in the democratic process.

“The DSS is the one that is about to scuttle democracy in the country at this moment by plotting to arrest Atiku and Obi and other top opposition politicians,” he said.

He further urged the DSS not to allow the agency to be used to truncate democracy or as purveyors of fake news.

He insisted that the DSS had of recent attempted albeit unsuccessfully to arrest and prosecute the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele for allegedly financing terrorism in the country.

“They later pulled back following the outcry that trailed the move. This is another of such hoaxes and it is one too many,” he said.

Alkali Baba Usman, Inspector General of Police, has again disobeyed a court order.

Usman on Thursday declined to produce a Cameroonian national, Agborsangaya Eyong, who was allegedly detained for over 400 days.

The Cameroonian national was reportedly held without bail for close to two years.

Despite a valid court order, the IGP failed to produce the detainee in court during Thursday’s proceedings.

His attorney, Mr. Danshita Shittu, complained bitterly to the court that the Police Chief disregarded and disobeyed the order to produce Eyong.

In rebuttal, however, counsel for the IGP, Assistant Superintendent of Police Joseph Udo, informed the court that the detained Cameroonian was not brought to court because the court order arrived late.

The police counsel also cited the bureaucratic processes between the offices of the IGP and that of the Attorney General of the Federation AGF as contributing to the problems, adding that he has been consulted on the matter.

The detainee, through his attorney, had requested a court order compelling the police to release him on bail pending the hearing and determination of the initial motion on notice.

He also demanded payment of N100 million in damages for his unlawful detention and publication of an apology in two national newspapers.

Interesting things you didn’t know about the U.S. dollar

You know that our money is the United States dollar. Did you know…

-There are three parts to a dollar: the penny, the nickel, and the dime. There are 100 cents in a dollar.

-The first dollar was made in 1792. It was used in the colonies instead of the Spanish dollar, which was used before.

-The dollar is the currency that is traded the most around the world.

-The dollar is also the currency that is most often faked around the world.

The US Dollar: A Brief History

Did you know that the history of the US dollar is pretty interesting? It was made when the Coinage Act was passed by the US government in 1792. This law made the US dollar the official currency of the country.

Since then, there have been a few changes to the dollar. For example, in 1854, the US stopped using Spanish coins and started using American ones. And in 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt took the US off the gold standard. This meant that the dollar could no longer be traded for gold.

The US dollar is one of the most popular currencies in the world right now. Over 60% of all transactions between countries take place in US dollars. So the next time you spend your vacation dollars in a foreign country, you can be sure that you are using a currency that has been around for a while!

Who Maintains the Production of US Currency?

The United States Mint is responsible for producing US dollar paper currency. It is a government agency that falls under the Treasury Department. They are responsible for producing both paper currency and coins.

Interestingly, each bill and coin’s design is determined by the president. The Mint then creates a prototype and submits it for approval to the Treasury. It is then put into production. Therefore, each bill and coin in circulation has been authorised by the president, which is why they often bear his or her image.

What are the Facts Influencing the Dollar to Naira Black Market Exchange rate for today ?

Here are some of the reasons for the dollar-to-naira exchange rate’s decline.

Inflation Rates: It is common knowledge that inflation has a direct impact on black market exchange rates. The naira will benefit if the Nigerian economy can be stabilised and inflation is brought under control; however, if the naira continues to fall, it may indicate that food and other necessities are becoming more expensive on a daily basis.

Interest Rates: Interest rates are another tool to keep an eye on. If the interest rate at which banks lend money rises, the economy will contract, and the value of the naira will fall as a result.

Government debt has the potential to affect investor confidence and, as a result, the flow of funds into the economy. If inflows are high, the naira exchange rate will rise in its favour.

Speculators: Speculators have a significant impact on the Dollar to Naira Black Market Exchange rate for today . They hoard money in anticipation of a profit, causing the naira to fall even further.

Trade Conditions: Although Nigeria is currently running a trade deficit, favourable trade terms will lead to an increase in the value of the Nigerian currency to the dollar. China, India, and the majority of Asian countries supply everything.

Tension In Abuja As Islamic Group Protest, Demands Release Of El-Zakzaky’s Passport

Shi’ite protesters stormed the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja asking President Muhammadu Buhari, to lift the travel ban placed on the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky.

Believed to be followers of the Shi’ite leader, the protesters demanded the release of the International passports of El-Zakzaky, and his wife, Malama Zeenah, for a medical trip.

A Federal High Court in Abuja earlier Thursday, had rejected an application filed by Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, asking the Department of State Services to release his passport and that of his wife.

Delivering the judgement, Justice Obiora Egwuatu, ruled that the Islamic cleric failed to prove that his passport was missing, despite the 10 exhibits provided by his lawyers, to prove that the DSS took the passports away, after his return from India in 2018.

The protesters were seen holding banners and placards that read, “Buhari must remove the travel ban on Sheikh El-Zakzaky.”
