Eight national figures have received the highest honor bestowed by Rivers State, the Grand Service Star of Rivers State (GSSRS), from outgoing governor Chief Nyesom Wike.

Other governors included Abubakar Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar of Jigawa, Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom, John Olukayode Fayemi of Ekiti, and Senator Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari of Zamfara.
At a State and honors award night in Port Harcourt on Saturday night, Governor Wike gave his farewell speech. He noted that the honorees in the second, third, and fourth categories represented a wider range of society.
The governor claimed that the seven governors and past governors who were honored by the State are among the nation’s most brilliant, devoted, and diligent servant-leaders who have distinguished themselves in public service with extraordinary track records.
They signed, took on, and toiled day and night to fulfill our group’s dreams for a southern president in the 2023 general elections despite grave risks to their political careers, most notably among the governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
We all know about their lives, reputations, exploits, and accomplishments, so we can all see what they stand for and the interests they promote. They have demonstrated that they are leaders designed for the times rather than ones that the events and circumstances just so happened to produce.

“We honor and celebrate the inspiring accomplishments, outstanding leadership, profound service, love for the motherland, and contributions to national cohesion, democracy, equity, and justice” added Wike.
The governor recalled that because Rotimi Amaechi, the departing governor at the time, was so hostile and combative, the beginning of his administration was difficult and tumultuous.
He claimed that he also encountered a depleted state coffers, enormous public debts, a divisive political climate, and a hostile federal government that had turned against his administration thanks to the previous governor.
