There has been a lot of misinformation and misconceptions about Stella Obasanjo ‘s death, as many people believe she died in a plane crash, while others believe she died while undergoing facial surgery.
Stella Obasanjo, the former First Lady of Nigeria, died on October 23, 2005. Her 60th birthday was only a few days away. She was scheduled to have cosmetic surgery in Puerto Banus, Marbella, Spain, at a private health clinic.
In case you didn’t know, cosmetic surgery is a type of surgery that is performed on healthy parts of the body with the sole purpose of improving a person’s appearance and/or removing signs of ageing.
She made it through the surgery with flying colours, but some complications would cost her her life later. The surgeon, identified only as AM, is said to have inserted a tube intended for liposuction surgery into Stella’s abdominal cavity.
Her colon, an important part of her digestive system, had been punctured by the tube, as had her liver, another vital organ. Stella Obasanjo died two days after the surgery as a result of this.
The fact that the doctor had left Stella about 4 hours after the surgery complicated the situation, which could have been avoided if he had been nearby.
So Stella Obasanjo died not as a result of a plane crash or any other misinformation, but as a result of a doctor’s carelessness and negligence while operating on her. It’s worth noting that in September 2009, the doctor was sentenced to one year in prison for “causing homicide through negligence”
He was also barred from practising medicine for three years and ordered to pay €120,000 (roughly US$176,000) in damages to Stella Obasanjo’s son.
“I instructed that the doctor and the clinic be prosecuted,” Olusegun Obasanjo wrote in one of his books. The life that was lost cannot be brought back, but a successful prosecution would prevent future carelessness and loss of life.”
May Stella Obasanjo’s soul rest in peace.
