A disciplinary panel has been directed by Ola Olukoyede, the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to conduct a thorough probe into two officers of the Commission accused of assaulting a female staff of Regional Hotel, Ojo, Lagos.

The officers were sighted in a viral video assaulting the staff of the hotel in an early morning sting operation on Thursday,  June 27,  2024.

Olukoyede ordered the arrest of the two officers and directed them to appear before a joint Disciplinary Team comprising the Appointment, Promotion and Disciplinary Committee, APDC and the Department of Ethics and Integrity.

They are billed to appear before the Team on Monday, July 1, 2024, at the Corporate Headquarters of the Commission, Abuja. The team would look into the case of the officers and recommend appropriate disciplinary measures to be taken against them.

Olukoyede stressed that no stone will be left unturned in getting the officers to account for their unprofessional conduct.

TORI had reported that the EFCC officials, dressed in plain clothes, were seen entering a hotel room forcefully. The video showed an unidentified woman, believed to be a hotel employee, attempting to open the door from inside when the men barged in. One of the officers is seen slapping the woman before ordering her out of the room.

This incident was recorded on Closed Circuit Television (CCTV).

  • North Compiling Issues To Remove Tinubu In 2027 – Shehu Sani

Former Kaduna lawmaker, Shehu Sani has alleged that there is an ongoing plot by the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar and northern elites to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential elections.

In a detailed interview with Sunday Sun in Abuja, Sani disclosed that the strategy hinges on exploiting regional disparities and security challenges.

According to him, Atiku, the former Vice President plans to capitalize on various issues, including the relocation of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) offices to Lagos, the perceived dominance of South-western appointees in Tinubu’s administration, and ongoing security concerns in Northern Nigeria.

Sani outlined that Atiku and his political allies intend to paint President Tinubu as favouring his regional base over the broader national interest.

“They are trying to present him [Tinubu] as an ethnicist, a regionalist, and someone who betrayed Northern Nigeria despite receiving significant electoral support from the region,” Sani stated.

He described the move as a calculated attempt to sway Northern voters against Tinubu, framing it as a necessity to reclaim power.

Despite revealing these strategies, Sani advised Atiku and his cohort to exercise patience and respect the informal rotational presidency arrangement between the North and the South.

He suggested that Tinubu, representing the South, should be allowed to complete an eight-year tenure, after which power would naturally shift back to the North in 2031.

Sani emphasized the importance of national unity and peace, urging Atiku to consider the broader implications of his actions on the country’s stability.

“Atiku has worked hard to promote peace and unity in Nigeria, and it would be prudent for him to allow the South to complete their tenure,” he added.

Speaking on Atiku’s visit to Daura, he said, “You see, it is a tradition that each time there is a Sallah celebration, people pay homage to former leaders. You pay homage to former leaders so that you get the necessary blessings from them, but in the case of what has happened recently, the fact of the matter is that Northern political leaders are regrouping, and their focal point is Buhari.

“They still want to use Buhari to whip up Northern regional sentiment as it was done in the CPC days and garner the votes they can in order to eject Tinubu from power.

“There is no Northern leader today that can serve as a rallying point. He was the one who was a former president and he used to have a fanatical following. So, what they are trying to do is to present Tinubu as a bad case, as an ethnicist, as a regionalist, as a person who betrayed Northern Nigeria, as a man who was voted by the North, but he is serving his own people and the need for Northerners to wake up and evict him out of power.

“It is their strategy. And they want to do that by making sure that that idea is sold to the Northern masses and then, from there, they seize power. But I have to draw attention to two facts – first of all, Buhari was a colossal failure.

“He has led this country for eight years and he left the North worse than he met it, and the treasury of the country was looted under him; the economy was pillaged under him and the nation was plundered and terrorism and banditry was at the highest peak under Buhari administration.”

He also welcomed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations and the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management, which is to establish a degree-awarding academy for public relations practice in Nigeria.

“I welcome the recent election of a Nigerian, Dr. Omoniyi Ibietan, as the Secretary-General of the African Public Relations Association (APRA),” he said.

“Also worthy of note is the fact that Public Relations (PR) has now been designated as a cadre in the Federal Civil Service, with effect from December 2023.

“The Information Officer Cadre has been re-designated to ‘Information and Public Relations Officer Cadre’, and the Executive Cadre to ‘Executive Officer (Information and Public Relations)’. The NIPR played a critical role in championing this, and deserve commendation.

“Nigeria will continue to play a leading role in strengthening and elevating public relations practice at home and across Africa. Recently, when I received the President of the African Public Relations Association, Mr. Arik Karani, he commended Nigeria in this regard.

“He said ‘[Nigeria] was, for the longest time, the only country in Africa that had a law that professionalized public relations. It was Nigeria that started it on the continent, and only last year did Zambia come out with its own law.

“So now we have two countries on the continent, and only now in Kenya, the bill for professionalizing public relations is at the second reading in Parliament.’

“Encouraging remarks. Rest assured that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will continue to provide the enabling environment for everybody within Nigeria’s communications industry to thrive,” he stated.

Euro 2024: This Is Not Football – Denmark Coach, Hjulmand Cries Out After Defeat To Germany

Denmark coach, Kasper Hjulmand has slammed the video assistant referee, VAR, after his side crashed out of the 2024 European Championship.

He was not happy following VAR’s controversial application in their defeat to Germany on Saturday in the Round of 16.

The Danes left the tournament as they saw a goal chalked off and a penalty given to opponents during the game.

The Scandinavians thought they had the lead in the 48th minute through Joachim Anderson only for the officials to interrupt their celebrations.

They were further dealt a blow when penalty was awarded Die Mannshaft in the 53rd minute.

“I rarely talk about these decisions but it was very decisive for this game.

“It’s frustrating. Being in front 1-0 would have changed everything,” the coach told the press after the game.

“This is not how we’re supposed to be using VAR, it’s one centimetre. And after a few minutes, there’s a penalty.

“I’m so tired of the ridiculous handball rules. We can’t require our defenders to run like this, it’s not natural!

“In my opinion, this is not how football is supposed to be.”

  • Online Influencer, Sir Jarus Says He Beat Up Wife After Discovering Fetish Items In Her Room, Conversation With Herbalist

     Sir Jarus

Suraj Oyewale, a Nigerian online influencer, who is known as #SirJarus on X, has made accusations against his wife.

He accused his wife, Mrs. Oyewale Ayoola, of consulting an herbalist, Mayowa Adesoga, after he expressed his intention to marry a second wife in accordance with Islamic rights.

Suraj claimed that he discovered a voice note confirming his wife’s consultation with the herbalist, which led him to investigate further.

“I did everything possible to placate her when I decided to exercise my Islamic right to marry a second wife.

“I knew it was natural for a woman to feel jealous when a man wants to marry a new wife. I recognised that and begged her.”

Suraj explained that he had tried to appease Ayoola with various gifts, including: “A N5million gift was given to her in April to support her business, a few days after I broke the news of my incoming new wife to her.

“I gave her a N700,000 gift for jewelry. I gave her N1.2million to buy land in her hometown of Ilorin, with a promise to build a house for her within 2-3 years.

“I gave her a N500,000 gift last Tuesday to make her even happier. However, just a few hours later, she still went to a Cele herbalist.

“I intercepted her voice note, which I began monitoring after witnessing an incident that made me suspicious of her. She sent my information to the herbalist. She had already paid him.

“That was the deal breaker for me. I sent her out and searched her room, only to find fetish items. It was a shock of my life. That was the point I took decisive action.”

He continued, “I tried my best for your sister. She has two SUVs for her movement in Lagos.

“I pleaded and begged, but she frustrated me into overreacting a couple of times, which led to beating. I’ve been trying to improve my behaviour towards her over the past 3 months to make her happy

“Allah sees my heart on everything I did for her.”

“These are things your sister did not tell you. Nobody victimised her. She victimised herself.

“I tolerated everything until her fetishness was exposed to me earlier this week.

“Allah knows I was a good husband to her,” he added.

It had earlier been reported that the Lagos Domestic and S*xual Violence Agency reported an allegation of abuse involving SirJarus, to the Lagos State Police Command for investigation.

The statement had read, “As the Statutory Agency in Lagos State dedicated to preventing and responding to domestic and s*xual violence, we take this very seriously.

“Domestic violence in any form is unacceptable, and the Lagos State Government maintains a zero-tolerance stance against it.

“We have, as an Agency referred this to the Commissioner of Police (Gender Desk Department) to ensure that investigation commences.

“We appreciate everyone who tagged us and brought this to our attention,” she said.

  • Nigerian Senator, Oyewumi Admits Buying Votes During Last General Elections As APC Demands Arrest

     Olalere Oyewumi

Olalere Oyewumi, a federal lawmaker from Osun State, who is a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senator, has admitted that he bought votes during the 2023 general elections.

Vote buying and selling was rampant during the last elections, which affected the credibility of the polls conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had also deployed its officials in some polling units.

In a viral video, Oyewunmi, who is the Deputy Minority Senate Leader, narrated how he sent his aide on an errand on the eve of the election with his personal money for vote buying but was rejected by strong supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking in Yoruba, the Minority Leader, who represents Osun West District, said “I tried all the tricks I knew to win at the Onilu House (Ile Onilu) polling unit but these people didn’t allow me.

“After exhausting money for the election, I gave my personal money to Ten-Ten to give to people at night to buy votes on the eve of the election, Ten-Ten came back with my money, saying the people rejected it. I was surprised.

“That was why I reached out to these people because I cannot be a Senator and continue to fail there. I was the one who called Ayandosu from Abuja to join me in the PDP. I told him he has talent and that the party he was serving then (APC) would not allow him to grow.”

Reacting to the development, the leadership of APC through its chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, said the confession had shown that Osun election was not free and fair.

In a statement, Lawal said: “The confessional statement of Senator Oyewumi was a confirmation of the fact that the last series of the elections in the state which secured victory for all the PDP candidates including Governor Ademola Adeleke, were brazenly rigged.

“The self-confession of Senator Oyewumi was an indication that he is a desperate politician who could go to any length to illegally corner opportunities regardless of what such portends to the right-thinking members of the society.

“In a civilised clime, Senator Oyewumi has no iota of reason to remain a minute longer in the Senate where he has been the Minority Leader based on his self-confession that he engaged in vote-buying during the election that secured a fraudulent victory for him.

“By now, Senator Oyewumi should be a guest of the statutory law enforcement agency constitutionally saddled with the responsibility of investigating such political crime involving a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

We’ll Ensure Products Safety In Markets – FCCPC

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, has reassured that it is committed to protecting consumers, promoting fair competition, and ensuring the safety of products in the market.

FCCPC Acting Executive Chairman, Dr Adamu Abdullahi, gave the assurance in an interview with newsmen after a surveillance exercise by the commission at some steel companies in Lagos and Ogun states on Friday.

He said that intelligence and surveillance reports obtained by the commission indicated that certain companies were involved in anti-competitive behaviour.

“This is why we decided to visit three of these companies to examine their operations and review their records, as well as analyse ten of their products.

“We aim to identify any false, misleading, and deceptive practices that could harm consumers,” he stated.

According to him, one major concern noted was the discrepancy in product specifications.

“For instance, consumers purchasing 12mm rods often receive 10mm rods instead, which contributes to the building collapses we frequently witness.

“Ensuring the safety of our people is a core responsibility, and these deceptive practices are unacceptable,” said Abdullahi.

He emphasized the need for thorough inspections and transparency.

“We are looking at their processes to determine if any corners are being cut.

“If we find evidence of such practices, we will apply the full extent of the law,” he added.

  • 2027: North’s Plan To Unseat Tinubu Could Destabilize Nigeria — Shehu Sani

Former senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani has warned Northern leaders seeking to unseat President Bola Tinubu to immediately stop such a move.

Sani issued this warning in an interview with Arise Television monitored by DAILY POST, saying that such a move could destroy the unity of Nigeria.

The public commentator urged Northern leaders to key into the policies and programmes of the Tinubu administration that will benefit the Northern part of Nigeria, instead of trying to gain more political power.

Recall that Northern Nigeria has been battling with insecurity and poverty, amongst other problems.

“There is evidence of rallying of forces, regrouping of forces- political forces from the North- trying to use former President Buhari as a rallying point in order to evict the government of Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu and they hope to resurrect his political chance in the house of the masses and portray the government as one that has been undermining the North and one that has not been living up to its campaign promises to the region being that it has its highest votes from there. And I must warn that attempts to do that can create a serious problem for our country.

“Buhari has been in power for eight years and there has never been any serious Southerner that challenged his own government in terms of trying to remove him from office.

“And secondly, we should know that before you think of power, we should think of the whole country. We should be thinking of a united country, a peaceful country. Nigeria is still a fragile nation.

“What will happen if Southern politicians decide to also form the idea of uniting themselves and making a position that this is their stand? There will be no Nigeria.

“So, they should, in the interest of the unity of the country and the future of the country, sacrifice their own personal ambition at least for 2027, and the North will have the moral right to ask for power after the second term of this administration,” Sani said.

He stressed the need for Northern leaders to address the problems faced in their region.

Sani, however, charged Tinubu’s administration to implement restructuring, adding that it will be a systemic opportunity for Nigerians to address the problems of underdevelopment.

  • Rejecting Power From Military In 1999 Was Our Biggest Mistake — Shehu Sani

Former Kaduna lawmaker, Shehu Sani has stated that the biggest mistake made in the country was rejecting the military’s call to take over power in 1999.

Sani said this during a panel discussion at the This Nigeria Lecture and Award event in Abuja on Thursday, June 27.

The theme of the event was “25 Years of Unbroken Democracy – Challenges, Prospects, and Possibilities.”

Senator Sani recounted the imprisonment of many democracy fighters before the death of former military leader Sani Abacha, which subsequently led to their release.

He revealed that General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who succeeded Abacha, invited democracy activists to take over power, but they refused to cooperate with the military—a decision he now considers a critical error.

He said: “Abdulsalami Abubakar invited all of us who fought for democracy; he said he was going to hand over power to a democratic government and wanted all of us freedom fighters to come together and take over power.

“At that time, Gani opposed it. Three times he invited us, but we refused to answer his call. He invited the politicians, who didn’t even wait for an invitation; they were knocking at his door.”

He lamented that their hesitation allowed politicians to dominate the political landscape by the time they decided to engage with the military.

Drawing a comparison with the African National Congress (ANC) in South Africa, Sani noted that unlike the ANC, which took over political power after their struggle, Nigerian democracy fighters missed a crucial opportunity in 1998 and 1999.

“After we decided to listen to him, we sat down to discuss what to do. The ANC in South Africa took over political power after their struggle, but we made a fundamental mistake by refusing to cooperate with the military.

“Mike Ozekhome, Gani Fawehinmi, Femi Falana, and Olisa Agbakoba all opposed joining. It was Bola Tinubu who argued that if we didn’t get involved, others would take over.

“By the time we agreed to join politics, politicians had already occupied all positions,

    ” Sani said.

He highlighted the subsequent struggles faced by democracy fighters in securing political positions, mentioning that prominent figures like Mike Ozekhome, Olisa Agbakoba, Gani Fawehinmi, Femi Falana, and himself were unable to achieve their political aspirations because the political space had been taken over by others.

He added: “Then by the time we all agreed to join the politics, politicians had taken over all posts. Mike Ozekhome tried to be governor of Edo State, he couldn’t, Olisa tried to be president he couldn’t, Gani tried to be president he couldn’t, Falana tried to be governor of his state he couldn’t, I tried to be governor of Kaduna State I couldn’t because the space were all taken over.”

The event was attended by other dignitaries, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; Mike Ozekhome (SAN); and Abiodun Adeniyi, among others.

  • 2027: El-Rufai Meets Kwankwaso After Visiting Buhari

The immediate past governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, paid a visit to the 2023 Presidential Candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Thursday, June 27, at his Abuja residence.

This meeting follows closely after El-Rufai’s visit to former President, Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State, which has fueled speculations about his current political alignments and intentions.

Despite being a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), El-Rufai’s recent interactions with figures from various opposition parties have caught the attention of political analysts and the public alike.

In March, El-Rufai also made headlines with his visit to the national chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Abuja, indicating a possible reevaluation of his political affiliations.

This comes after a setback earlier in the year when El-Rufai, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), was overlooked for a ministerial position in President Bola Tinubu’s government, reportedly due to a failed security clearance by the Senate.

Following his exclusion from the ministerial list, El-Rufai had briefly moved abroad and stepped away from the political spotlight.

His return to Nigeria and subsequent resumption of public appearances, including the recent visit to the SDP’s national secretariat, have reignited discussions about his future role in Nigerian politics.

Commenting on these developments, Shehu Sani, a former Senator from Kaduna Central, suggested that El-Rufai’s visits, along with those of other northern politicians to Buhari, might be part of a broader strategy aimed at repositioning for the 2027 elections, possibly hinting at challenges to President Tinubu’s administration.
