  • Boko Haram Planning To Infiltrate Nationwide Protest – Police Warns

The Yobe State Police Command has raised alarm over an alleged plan by Boko Haram terrorists to infiltrate the forthcoming #EndBadGovernance protest in August.

The command’s spokesman, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, July 27, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

He said intelligence received by the command indicated that foreign mercenaries were engaged to destroy lives and property at the protest.

Mr Abdulkarim, therefore, called on would-be protesters to exercise caution.

He said: “As Yobe state recovers from insurgency, the commissioner of police, CP Garba Ahmed, acknowledges citizens’ constitutional rights to peaceful assembly.

“While we alert citizens to sinister motives, even peaceful protests at this time may be ill-timed. Recent insurgency activities in Gujba LGA, including an improvised explosive device explosion, have raised concerns.

“We are unprepared to face additional security challenges.”

According to Mr Abdulkarim, the protesters must indicate proposed protest routes and assembly points for a hitch-free protest.

The spokesman said they should also state the expected duration of the protest, names and contact details of leaders and organisers and measures to prevent hijacking by criminal elements.

The statement said, “By providing this information, we can deploy adequate personnel and resources, designate specific routes and areas, establish clear communication channels, and minimise the risk of violence, property damage, or criminal activity.

“We encourage protesters to cooperate with the police, obey the law, and adhere to global best practices for peaceful assembly. We are committed to working with all to promote peaceful expression and maintain public order.”

  • Think Of What You

    post

A Facebook user, Anayo Henry has blamed a Nigerian woman who lamented about her husband’s infidelity, stating that she might have pushed him to be with the mistress.

The woman had commented on a post about Yul Edochie, his second wife, Judy, and estranged first wife May, saying that she’s currently facing the same issue in her marriage.

“I don’t like saying anything about this family because my husband is also misbehaving with another woman. So I can only say God help women in Jesus name, amen,” she wrote.

Responding to her comment, Anayo insinuated that the lady must have driven her husband into the arms of another woman.

“Madam, have you checked yourself? Think of what you have not been doing or doing well that sent your husband into another woman’s embrace. Hardly a man dumps a woman he married with his hard-earned resources for a random woman without a strong cause,” he wrote.

  • As Children Of God And Responsible People, Shun Protest – CAN Leader Tells Christians

The Niger State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has appealed to Christians to shun the planned nationwide protest scheduled for Aug.1 to 10.

This was contained in a message to Christians in the state signed by Bishop Bulus Yohanna, chairman of CAN, in the state.

He stated that the protest could be hijacked by hoodlums which would cause problems for innocent citizens.

The message was read in the churches across the state on Sunday, July 28.

Yohanna said: “Genuine protest can easily be seized by hoodlums and selfish groups to cause enormous havoc on innocent citizens.

“Let us shun protest, violence has never yielded positive results.”

Yohanna, who is also the Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, enjoined church leaders, local government coordinators and parents to admonish their members and children to shun any planned protest in the interest of peace.

He charged them to remember the book of Romans 13:1-3 which talks about Christians not rebelling against constituted authorities.

“As you are aware, there are plans to stage a nationwide protest across the country.

“As Children of God and responsible people known for peace, I urge us all to shun the protest, speak to our children/wards and members of our congregation

    ,” he said.

He said that other well-meaning Nigerians, including the youths, had declared that they would not join the nationwide protest.

“I want us to note that as a body, the CAN, Niger state will not be part of the exercise but rather prefer to have peaceful dialogue and continue to pray for our nation,
    ” he said.

“Peaceful protest with clear demands is good but such could be hijacked by miscreants and be perceived by security as a threat which can lead to arrests/shootings.

“There is no time that violence has led to positive results, rather it has caused destructions, loss of lives and setback

    s,” said Yohanna.

He said that major stakeholders in Niger state had agreed not to join the protest.

The Bishop, however, urged governments at all levels to shun corruption and ethnic and religious bigotry.

  • Protest: Shehu Sani Reveals Only Way Organisers Will Submit Details To Police

Protest: Shehu Sani Reveals Only Way Organisers Will Submit Details To Police

Former Nigerian Senator and activist, Shehu Sani has said the organisers of the planned August 1-10 hardship protest will submit their details to the Nigeria Police Force when they have been hypnotized or charmed.

Sani disclosed this in a statement on his X account on Saturday in reaction to the condition given by Nigeria Police to intended protesters.

Recall that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun told the planners of the August 1–10 protests to submit their details to the commissioners of police in their respective states.

The IGP’s comment comes after a human rights activist, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, standing as solicitor for the planned protesters, requested that the police and Department of State Services, DSS, provide security.

Reacting to the development, Sani who led protests during the Military era in Nigeria, stressed that it is only when protesters have been charmed that they will provide their details to the police.

“The only way a protester can submit his name and address to the police is when he is charmed or ‘jazzed’ by a priest or a native doctor”, he said.

DAILY POST reports that the planned August 1 protest had been a subject of debate in Nigeria’s public space.

The organizers of the protest gave the worsening economic hardship as justification for their agitation.

  • People Are Not Patronising Us Again – Yam Sellers Lament As Price Increase Affects Sales

     Yam Sellers

The many yam sellers Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja are currently lamenting low sales brought on by price increase.

Nigerians have been complaining about the inflation and how they’ve been forced to forego most necessities.

Recently, people have been lamenting about the price of yams, plantain, and other food items, with even Nollywood actors crying out about the exorbitant prices of food.

To compound issues, there was confusion last week at the Bakin Dogo food market in Kaduna North Local Government Area, Kaduna State, as 100 tubers of old yam sold for N1 million at wholesale.

Now, Abuja yam sellers are complaining that they are unable to make sales because customers cannot afford their goods.

Blessing Timothy, a yam seller in the Masaka market, called on the federal and state governments to regulate the constant price increase of foodstuff to minimise the sufferings of Nigerians.

She also appealed to the government at all levels to provide farmers with modern farm inputs while ensuring the timely distribution of fertilisers to boost food production nationwide.

Ms Timothy said five tubers of yam now sell for between N15,000 and N30,000, depending on the sizes.

Hannah Duke, another yam seller in Mararaba, said the increase in the price of yam had affected her business, adding that she was gradually losing her capital.

According to her, most farmers don’t go to farms anymore because of insecurity. Those who managed to plant will pay the gunmen to be able to harvest—the cost of transportation and pesticides.

“All these go to the cost of production, and in the end, the farmers need to increase prices to make ends meet,’’ she said.

Ms Duke said the yam business was no longer profitable, making it difficult for people to buy yam.

“Sometimes we are forced to cut yams into pieces to sell; we sell small slices of yam between N1,000 and N2,000, depending on the size. We are appealing to the government to come to our aid,’’ she said.

Josephine Ejeh, another seller in Mararaba, expressed her frustration and said yam was now beyond the reach of the ordinary man.

“We don’t know where to start from. Last year, we sold a bundle of yams (five pieces) for N3,000, and now we are selling between N15,000 and N30,000, depending on the size.

“People are not patronising us again. I’ve been here since morning, and I have not sold anything. Everyone is complaining, and it is not our fault either.”

Justice Akintayo Aluko, made the remand order on Friday, July 26, 2024, following an application by NDLEA, requesting that the suspect be remanded in its custody for 14 days, for further investigation.

The court also ordered an Interim attachment to the Federal Government of Nigeria of a grey-coloured Mercedes Benz SUV GLE 156 2022 model with Registration number 01G-300G, Ogun and chassis No. 4JGFB4JB9NA622055, belonging to the alleged drug baron, being a proceed of illicit drug dealing in Cannabis Sativa pending the determination of this case.

Justice Aluko granted NDLEA’s request to remand the suspect and interim attachment of the vehicle, after granting an Exparte motion filed and argued by NDLEA’s counsel Lambert Nor.

While arguing the application, Nor told the court that the application was under Sections 6 and 44 of the 1999, Constitution (as amended); Section 293 of the Administration Of Criminal Justice Act, 2015; Sections 3(c), 31(a) 31, 32, 33, 34, 36 and 46 of the NDLEA 2004.

Nor also told the court that the Exparte motion for the order was supported with a 23-paragraph affidavit deposed to by Kayode A Ojo, a litigation officer with the agency and a written address

NDLEA listed the following grounds for the orders sought: “that the suspect, Sulaimon Jimoh alias “Olowoidiogede”, a.k.a. “Temo” is a wanted high profile drug baron who is in control of the Cannabis Drug trade in the whole of the West Africa Region.

“That several tons of the drugs of the suspect had been seized over the years and the suspect had always managed to escape arrest.

“That there is a need to pursue other diverse aspects of the case by way of extensive investigation.

“That it is necessary to have legal custody of the suspect and the items seized from him in order not to violate his rights.

“That this Honourable court has unfettered discretion to grant the orders sought.”

Justice Aluko after listening to the submission of the NDLEA lawyer, and perusing through all the processes filed before the court, granted the orders sought, and adjourned the matter to August 9, 2024, for a report of investigation.

  • Dialogue With Protest Organisers, There Is Hunger In Nigeria – Isoko Youths Urge Tinubu

Dialogue With Protest Organisers, There Is Hunger In Nigeria – Isoko Youths Urge Tinubu

In a bid to avert the proposed nationwide protest slated for August 1 to August 19 against hunger and hardships in Nigeria, the Isoko National Youth Assembly (INYA) Worldwide has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently dialogue with the protest organizers and review some of his administration’s policies that have caused hardship for the people to prevent the strike action from taking place.

INYA President, Comrade Eniwake Orogun, in a statement made available to the press on Saturday, stressed that there is hardship in the land occasioned by hasty government policies.

The Isoko youth body also appealed to the youths and security agencies to avoid violent protests and the destruction of national and state assets.

It also appealed to security agencies to treat protesters in a civil manner if the protest goes ahead due to the failure to dialogue and engage with the protesters.

The Isoko youth body said, “Today, we are at the edge as a nation, with all aspects of existence greatly troubled, from the economy, security, socio-political, and corporate existence coming under some form of distress and perplexity.

“It is said that light exists at the end of the tunnel, but this particular tunnel seems too long that not even a flicker of light is in sight.

“It will be foolhardy to try to deny or explain the hardship which pervades the land, exacerbated by policies such as fuel subsidy removal, which many believe has produced the unintended outcome, or should we say, the exact intended outcome associated with wrong timing or hasty policy implementation, favorable only to some fifth columnists?

“Many are hungry, weak, and beggarly. The hardship is palpable, and succor seems far. The proposed protest is only a natural response, which is the least the vast majority of those who live below the baseline can do at this material time.

“Regardless, this protest can be avoided. We call on the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to act as a matter of urgency by doing the following:

“Constructive engagement of critical stakeholders with a genuine view to providing short, medium, and long-term solutions to the myriad of problems facing the people.

“Reevaluate its priorities and address head-on issues such as inflation, insecurity, and the high cost of governance.

“Reconsider policies such as fuel subsidy removal, floating of the naira, and liberalization of our economy which have never worked in Nigeria or any part of Africa and have proven to be very injurious to individuals, families, and businesses.

“Our leaders must learn from the 2011 Arab Spring and the recent not-too-good experience of the EndSARS protest, from which Africa and Nigeria are yet to fully recover, and act in the best interest of the nation.

“To our dear youths and fellow comrades, we stand by you at this trying time.

“However, if the protest must hold, hopefully it does not, let us be reminded that though our right to peaceful protest is inalienable and guaranteed by our constitution, we do not have the right to be destructive and violent. No one benefits from the destruction of national assets; if anything, it increases the suffering which the protest stands against.

“To our gallant security personnel, we implore you not to fall to the temptation of responding with brute force to our people, should the protest hold.

“Understand that people are hungry and angry, and the least expected of you is the performance of your constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property.

“This is a trying period in our history as a people, and together we shall overcome.”

  • I Hope My Story Can Help Another Child Who Also Experienced The Same Thing – South African R@pe Victim Speaks Out As She Gets Justice 27 Years Later

     Siphokazi Nonjobe

A South African woman who was s3xually violated in 1997 and decided to file charges in 2021 has finally gotten justice after her r@pist was sentenced in June 2024.

He was convicted 27 years after the incident.

The woman says r@pe victims should open cases against their abusers regardless of when the crime occurred.

Siphokazi Nonjobe, who was only 14 years old when Xolani Qanqane r@ped her, said as long as the perpetrator is still alive, victims must pursue justice to make sure their abusers answer for what they did

The media is not allowed to identify s3xual violence victims, however, Nonjobe, 41, waived her right to anonymity.

“If my story can help another child who also experienced the same thing, then let’s give it a face so that they become courageous and open cases,
” she said in an interview on Tuesday, July 23.

At the time that Qanqane r@ped Nonjobe, he was a photographer at a mall in Qonce, Eastern Cape.

The r@pe, Nonjobe said, had left her broken.

“I used to fantasise about getting a gun and shooting him or hiring people to beat him up,” she said.

She never told anyone about it until 2004 when she was at university.

“I used to freeze during intimacy and decided it was time to come clean to my boyfriend because he loved me enough for me to open up to him.

“I told him everything and he was very supportive and comforting.”

The two later broke up as the man moved to Gauteng while Nonjobe remained in the Eastern Cape and later pursued her Master’s degree.

Then one day in May 2021, Nonjobe was shopping when she saw a man wearing a cowboy hat that looked like the one her r@pist used to wear.

The hat triggered the memory of her being r@ped 24 years earlier. She went to the police station immediately and opened a case

According to Nonjobe, the policewoman assisting her did not even flinch when she told her that the r@pe happened in 1997. She told her that she had a right to open a case and gave her a document to write her statement.

As soon as she had that pen in her hand, everything came pouring out and by the time she was done, she had written an 11-page statement. Investigations then started.

The fact that Qanqane had been a well-known photographer who later became a taxi driver helped the police to start somewhere.

They later traced him to prison. When they got there they were informed that Qanqane had been released the previous day after serving 10 years for murd3r.

However, they were able to find him shortly afterwards.

The matter went to trial in 2023 but Nonjobe said Qanqabe’s “tricks” delayed the matter.

“He kept changing lawyers. At some point he said the magistrate must recuse himself as he had convicted him of the same offence [r@pe] years back and will be biased… the matter would be postponed multiple times.”

The matter only went ahead without interruptions this year at the Zwelitsha regional court.

As there was no physical evidence of the r@pe, the state relied on the testimony of three witnesses: Nonjobe, her ex-boyfriend from university and an old neighbour of Qanqane.

The ex-boyfriend corroborated what Nonjone had told him 20 years ago about the r@pe.

The neighbour also confirmed that Qanqane used to live where Nonjobe said the r@pe had taken place. He also confirmed that Qanqane indeed used to be a photographer.

Nonjobe said she did not crumble from tough questions from Qanqabe’s lawyer during cross-examination because she knew her truth and stuck to it

“I felt that it was a do-or-die moment for me.”

According to Nonjobe, all that Qanqabe did was deny that he had r@ped her but did not put forward a defence. Qanqabe was found guilty of r@pe last month.

Nonjobe said she did not display any emotion as the verdict was handed down.

“I think it was delayed trauma; I was still processing what had happened. I only cried when I got home,” she said.

Qanqane was handed an 11-year sentence.

Nonjobe said when she opened the case, she did not think she would win as it had happened a long time ago. All she wanted was to confront Qanqabe in court and tell him how much he had broken her when she r@ped her.

Her healing has now started since Qanqabe’s conviction and subsequent sentence, Nonjobe said.

She has nothing but praise for the police and prosecutor who helped put Qanqabe behind bars for r@ping her.

“I don’t think it was an easy case; they worked overtime to help me. If it weren’t for them, my strength would have weakened,
    ” she said.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson in the Eastern Cape, Luxolo Tyali, said the challenging thing about Nonjobe’s case was the fact that there was no forensic evidence to corroborate her statement.

Most of the evidence was that of Nonjobe and her ex-boyfriend, to whom she had made the first report, Tyali said.

“Thorough police investigation which placed Qangabe where he was alleged to be in 1997, the evidence of the first report, as well as the prosecutor’s ability to poke holes in the cross-examination of Qanqabe ensured that justice is served.”

Tyali said he hoped Nonjobe’s case would encourage other victims to seek justice.

“R@pe cases do not prescribe. We hope that other victims of s3xual violence will be encouraged to come forward, even if their assault took place a long time ago,” he said.
