Suspected fighters linked to Ansaru have attacked a military base in Kwara State, killing at least three soldiers and injuring several others in a pre-dawn assault.

The incident occurred in Kemanji, a community in Kaiama Local Government Area, near the fringes of Kainji National Park, an area security sources have repeatedly identified as a suspected hideout for armed groups.

Ejes Gist News reports that the attackers struck at about 3 a.m., targeting a military formation in the area.

A forest guard, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to security concerns, said the assailants launched a direct assault on the military facility.

“The attackers came straight to the camp and opened fire on the soldiers,” the source said.

Military Assets Seized

During the operation, the attackers reportedly seized military equipment, including:

  • Eight operational motorcycles
  • One gun truck

The loss of these assets is expected to raise concerns about the operational capabilities of armed groups in the region.

A local vigilante involved in the response stated that security forces returned fire during the incident, resulting in casualties among the attackers. However, the exact number of casualties on the side of the assailants could not be independently verified.

The Kaiama axis and surrounding forest regions have witnessed increasing security pressure in recent years, with multiple armed groups exploiting difficult terrain around Kainji National Park.

Security analysts have previously linked the area to activities of Ansaru, a faction associated with Boko Haram, known for targeted attacks on security formations.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Nigerian military nor the Kwara State Police Command has issued an official statement confirming the attack or providing further operational details.

Residents in nearby communities remain on alert as security agencies intensify surveillance and response efforts in the area.
