President Bola Tinubu’s dream of a second term in 2027 has hit yet another brick wall. Just when the opposition camp seemed divided, a new strong contender has stepped onto the stage.
The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has officially cleared former Cross River State Governor, Donald Duke, as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
PRP Makes It Official
Ejes Gist News gathered that the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) approved Duke’s clearance after reviewing the report of its Primaries Appeal Committee.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Muhammed Ishaq, broke the news in a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday, June 6.
According to Ishaq, the NWC also ratified the outcomes of the governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and state Houses of Assembly primaries across the country. The only exception is the Tarauni Federal Constituency primary in Kano State, which he said is yet to be nullified.
Duke Joins Atiku, Obi in the Battle Against Tinubu
With this development, Donald Duke has officially joined the growing list of opposition heavyweights looking to unseat President Tinubu in 2027.
He will now battle alongside:
- Atiku Abubakar (African Democratic Congress – ADC)
- Peter Obi (Nigeria Democratic Congress – NDC), with Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate
Recall that Ejes Gist News earlier reported how the much-talked-about opposition coalition collapsed after Atiku, Obi, and Kwankwaso failed to agree on a single platform. While Obi and Kwankwaso later teamed up under the NDC, Atiku stayed put with the ADC.
Now, the PRP has thrown its weight behind Donald Duke. The question on every Nigerian’s lips is: Will this split the opposition or strengthen it?
Why PRP Is a Party to Watch in 2027
Ejes Gist News can confirm that the PRP is not just any opposition party. It is one of Nigeria’s oldest political parties, with deep roots in the political movement of the late Mallam Aminu Kano – a revered northern nationalist.
Recently, the party has been making serious moves, especially in the North.
In a major blow to Tinubu’s APC, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and two senators from the state – Senator Shehu Buba Umar and Senator Sama’ila Dahuwa – dumped the APC for the PRP.
That alone tells you the PRP is no pushover.
What This Means for Tinubu
Let’s be real – President Tinubu now has his hands full.
Atiku is still fighting. Peter Obi and Kwankwaso have joined forces. And now, Donald Duke is officially in the race with a party that has northern structure and historical relevance.
Some political analysts say the opposition is too fragmented to pose a real threat. But others argue that if these forces ever unite under one banner, Tinubu’s second-term ambition could be in serious jeopardy.
As of the time of this report, the presidency has not officially reacted to Donald Duke’s emergence. But you can be sure that the battle lines are being drawn.
Ejes Gist News Verdict
The 2027 presidential race is no longer a two-horse race. It is now a multi-polar contest featuring:
- Bola Tinubu (APC)
- Atiku Abubakar (ADC)
- Peter Obi & Rabiu Kwankwaso (NDC)
- Donald Duke (PRP)
Who will blink first? Will there be a merger? Or will Tinubu coast to victory amid a divided opposition?
Stay tuned to Ejes Gist News because we will keep bringing you the latest gist as it unfolds.
