The assailants, numbering about fifteen (15), arrived at the guest house in a convoy that included a Range Rover SUV and two other operational vehicles. Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen strategically parked their vehicles to block potential escape routes before storming the premises, firing sporadically into the air to disperse terrified guests and onlookers.

What has deepened anxiety among residents and political observers is the targeted nature of the assault. Sources indicated that the gunmen did not engage in random violence or looting; instead, they moved directly toward the chairman’s location.

“They went straight for their target,” an eyewitness told Punch Metro, suggesting the attackers had prior intelligence on the council boss’s movements and exact whereabouts within the facility.

In the ensuing melee, a local vigilante member identified simply as Ufuoma was shot. He was reportedly perceived as a threat due to his uniform and was gunned down before he could raise any meaningful alarm. Ufuoma was immediately rushed to a nearby undisclosed hospital for emergency treatment, and his condition remains a source of concern for the community.

The abduction occurred less than 24 hours after suspected criminal elements reportedly issued threats of violence in the area, a development that has raised questions about the adequacy of pre-emptive security measures in the locality.

Police Commissioner Relocates to Sapele, Takes Direct Command

In a decisive show of urgency, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has effectively relocated to Sapele, taking direct personal charge of the rescue and manhunt operations. Departing from the usual bureaucratic distance associated with such cases, CP Oyeniyi conducted a comprehensive on-the-spot assessment to strengthen the search and rescue architecture.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the commissioner’s visit was not merely symbolic. He inspected the Debro Fred Guest House to gain first-hand situational clarity regarding the crime scene. More importantly, the police chief proceeded to Ogorode Waterside, where the Range Rover SUV suspected to have been used by the kidnappers was recovered after being abandoned.

The recovery of the vehicle at the waterside is considered a critical lead. It suggests that the abductors may have taken their victim into the labyrinthine creeks and waterways that characterise the riverine axis of Delta State. CP Oyeniyi has reportedly directed that a comprehensive forensic analysis be carried out on the recovered vehicle to obtain any latent fingerprints or DNA evidence that could help identify the perpetrators.

“We Will Get Them”: CP Vows Safe Rescue, Visits Family

Amid intensified security operations, CP Oyeniyi visited the family home of the abducted chairman, where he met with his distraught wife.

“The Command shares in your pain at this difficult time. I want to assure you that we are doing everything possible to secure his safe return,” the commissioner was quoted as saying.

He assured the family that all available resources—both technical and human—have been deployed to ensure the chairman is rescued unhurt.

The commissioner also visited hospitals where the injured, including the chairman’s security aide and the vigilante Ufuoma, are receiving treatment.
